Morrissey big coup for Sun-Times; BCS big joke for college football
2009-12-06 19:36:00 The Bald Truth Once Jay Mariotti's fiefdom, the Sun-Times now is populated by the two columnists (Tribune defector Rick Morrissey and Rick Telander) who ripped Jay a new one - justifiably and almost always entertainingly - at every opportunity. Anyway, best of everything to Morrissey in his new endeavor. Big score for the Sun-Times; big loss for the Trib. The Balder TruthWhen I hit the button on this post, I officially will be off for a week. And by off, I mean completely off. I will not be blogging or answering e-mail or even watching ESPN. Just need to recharge the old brain and reconnect with my loved ones, so I'm giving up sports and writing for a week. Thanks for being...

Carrying On About Big Ten Football: The Finale
2009-11-24 05:00:00 The Big Ten season has concluded, and Ohio State's on top of the standings. Carrying On About Big Ten Football: November 14
2009-11-16 06:05:00 It was another busy weekend in Big Ten country, and in honor of "Cup-Half-Empty Day" (a holiday I just invented), here are five disappointments that jumped out at me from Saturday's action.UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: FIVE THINGS I LEARNED1. Michigan is in utter-collapse mode. The Wolverines dropped their sixth straight conference game, losing by three touchdowns at Wisconsin Saturday. After opening the season 4-0, Rich Rodriguez's 5-6 ballclub will have to upset Ohio State in the teams' annual rivalry game to have any hope of going bowling. The Badgers embarrassed the porous Michigan defense, courtesy of four Scott Tolzien passing touchdowns and 151 rushing yards from John Clay. If there's anything I've learned from my many years of watching football, it's...

Penn State Football Should Take a "Special" Page Out of Pete Carr
2009-11-15 01:19:00 UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - "Misadventures in Happy Valley" - that would be a catchy and fitting title to a new movie starring the Penn State special teams unit. Well, that and the fact that "Waiting to Exhale" was already taken. During a season where Penn State football began with many question marks, from offensive line, to wide receivers, to a young and inexperienced secondary, the biggest issue in the end has been special teams....

Carrying On About Big Ten Football: October 24
2009-10-26 04:45:00 So far this season, I've watched three Big Ten football games from the comfort of the press box.I like this.Especially because press boxes happen to be climate-controlled.This past weekend, I hadn't applied for any media credentials, and I had visions of enjoying my day off by sitting at home with my two televisions and watching college football all afternoon. You see, my living room is also climate controlled. However, I ended up receiving free tickets to the Ohio State/Minnesota game in Columbus at the last minute. And while watching college football on television is a great way to spend a fall Saturday, watching college football in person is an even better option. Only one small problem. The Buckeyes tickets, which were generously...
Round One - Weekend Football Picks
2009-10-24 16:06:00 There are some very intriguing games this weekend in both college football and on the NFL schedule. I am really looking forward to watching the rivalry game in South Bend as Notre Dame tries to avoid a letdown after a tough comeback and eventual loss to USC with Boston College rolling into Notre Dame Stadium.Iowa is undefeated and after a 2nd half comeback on the road at Wisconsin they are starting to make believers out of those that have doubted their staying power. However, another tough game is up next with a night time battle at Michigan State much tougher than most would expect. I will have more games for you as the weekend unfolds. Have fun and enjoy! 2009-10-17 21:37:00 Four of the six games featuring Big Ten teams are in the books, and the huge story is that Danny Hope picked up his first conference win as Purdue head coach in a shocking upset of Ohio State, who entered the game unbeaten in league play. The Boilers posted a 26-18 win in West Lafayette behind quarterback Joey Elliott's impressive day (31 completions in 50 attempts), Keith Smith's big catches (12 in all for 125 yards), and Aaron Valentin's two touchdowns. Both of Valentin's scores came in the pivotal third quarter, as the Boilers outscored the visitors from Columbus 14-0 and got a pair of interceptions from senior cornerback Brandon King.In other action around the Midwest...MICHIGAN 63, DELAWARE STATE 6. Pick Six: Talking Big Ten Football With Charissa Thompson
2009-10-16 02:30:00 It's time for another edition of Pick Six, where FBT interviews a nationally recognized Big Ten writer, broadcaster, or football expert to chat about a half-dozen topics. Today's guest is Charissa Thompson of the Big Ten Network. Charissa checked in with FBT from the injured list, as she's currently recovering from a broken foot and ankle. When healthy, her weekly college football duties include hosting Big Ten's Best, contributing to Friday Night Tailgate, and, of course, reporting from the sideline each Saturday for Big Ten football games. With the introductions out of the way, let's jump right into the questions.1. What are some of your favorite Big Ten football coaches or players to interview (maybe a top three) and why? What...

Carrying On About Big Ten Football: October 10
2009-10-13 01:15:00 CHAMPAIGN, Ill.-- As many of our readers know, I wrote a column less than two months ago predicting the result of every game in the Big Ten. I mulled over possible outcomes, considered matchups, carefully weighed home-field advantages, searched for breakout players, tried to predict momentum swings, and came up with a finished product I was very proud of.This self-proclaimed masterpiece predicted a 6-0 start and (ultimately) a league co-championship for Ron Zook's Fighting Illini. In my way of thinking, the Illini would rebound from a disappointing 2008 season and return to Rose Bowl-type form, led by Juice Williams, Arrelious Benn, and an explosive offense.Well...I'm an idiot. That thought rang through my head as I stood on the Memorial Stadium turf...

Monday Night Football Prediction
2009-10-06 00:00:00 After a 4-2 record on Sunday it's time to take a look at the MNF match up between the Vikings and the Packers in Minneapolis tonight. The environment should be electric as Brett Favre takes on his old team on the national TV stage. The latest line has the Vikings as 5 point favorites and the total at 46 1/2 and that line concerns me because it was -3 last Monday. Too many people believe this is going to be a blowout and that is when we usually see a fabulous game develop. I would be careful laying 5 or more and if you can play the money line on Minnesota that is the way to go. **As always these predictions...

MaruBot Football League better than soccer video game
2009-09-23 13:01:00 Just when I am still reeling after Space Foosball, another electronic tabletop game that requires the player to stand comes my way. Introducing MaruBot Football League, a new way of playing soccer on the table. As you can see, miniature robots rest safely under glass, and it is up to the four players (two on one team, two on the other) to control them. These players are moved by joystick controls, and their goal is to make goals. Oddly enough, these robots have LEDs in their eyes that indicate emotions. So if the other team scores a goal, they look flat and sad. If you make a goal, the eyes look wide and happy. Check out a mini photo gallery after the jump to see for yourself. Apparently, this game is a big hit in Korea, but I have yet to see it where I live in the United States. Then again, it’s not like I visit video arcades anymore. Perhaps MaruBot Football League could breathe life into the arcades that are still around. That, or perhaps a home version could...

Awwww, Football Geeks You Too!
2009-09-16 21:20:00 Just got back from the library where I was reminded of how irritated I am at the "Geek the Library" ad campaign. It's not just that we have driven the last stake through the heart of any remaining meaning of the word "geek", rather like the media did to the word "hacker" before. It's that whoever did this campaign didn't "geek" parts-of-speech, since "geek" was never an active verb (with the exception of antiquated drug-culture slang meaning roughly 'to snort cocaine'). Ordinarily I'm not such an English nit-picker, but... it's the bloody library!

Carrying On About Big Ten Football: September 12
2009-09-14 01:53:00 What an eventful day in Big Ten football. It began with a half dozen games kicking off at noon and it ended (for me) a little after 1:30 am ET Sunday morning when Purdue's last-ditch onside kick attempt was unsuccessful. In between, I saw a little bit of all eleven Big Ten teams...eight of which won, bringing the league's record to 18-4...now if I can just keep all the games straight! UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: USC 18, OHIO STATE 15This week's spotlight game is the USC/Ohio State clash that felt more like a bowl game than a regular-season tilt.
