Beans, beans, the magical fruit ...
2009-12-08 03:34:00
I'm sure this is something that most people are aware of. You can cook beans at home, instead of buying them from a can--and they're cheaper. I know that people do it, and I've heard it's easy. But usually, I'm too lazy to do anything of the sort....

Common "Strange Fruit" f/ John Legend Producer: Devo Springsteen - FULL, CDQ, Leftover track off the album, Finding Forever *Tibs Fav.™This Devo Springsteen production was a leftover track from Common's Finding Forever, but ended up goin' on Cassidy's B.A.R.S. album from 2007. Nevertheless, "Strange Fruit" has surfaced today (shouts to Marty) and Common definitely does his thing on the verses. My favorite part was how he punctuated the end of the first verse with the bars,"The hurricanes and waves, they came ashore,Takin' lives of the brave and poor,They ignore, us once again, but it was lessons in the wind,Change that came from within so"- CommonKeep in mind this was written and recorded on the heels of Hurricane Katrina. Definitely a...

An Open Letter to the Fruit Company That Ruined Breakfast
2009-09-21 00:22:00
Usually when people are unemployed for months at a time, they start to dream up get-rich-quick schemes. Hence, the alarming success of Nigerian presidents ready to wire money to your checking account TODAY. The thing is - I'm the only person alive who seems to come up with get-rich-slowly schemes. It started in high school when I decided I would devote my life to becoming the jerk who waves in the backgrounds of other people's home movies. My thought was that with enough time and effort, I would become rich and famous as, the world over, friends shared their home videos and noticed me waving from Peru, Disney World and their daughter's play."Gee, Sally, that's funny. I think that same girl waving behind...
Delicious fruit slices can be your memory aids
2009-09-16 05:58:00
The last thing you would want to do with such gorgeous fruit is feed them to that unforgiving abyss called the stomach. And that too when they can sit so pretty on your table, radiating a mysterious sense of calm each time you steal a glance. Which is why someone has already ensured that these beauties are not at all edible, to begin with. These "slices" of fruit (apple and pear) are post-it note dispensers called Kudamemo. .........
How to Make Homemade Fruit Leather
2009-09-08 10:00:00
Quite a few years ago in a fit of domesticity I learned how to can fruit. Apricots and cherries were my weapons of choice but it wasn't really that cost-effective. We don't get the stuff fresh off the tree here and the shipping costs make it expensive enough that you don't necessarily save that much money by canning your own fruit but that's another post for another day.The point is, I had about 50 jars of fruit and while we ate some of it, I found that my children weren't that big on canned cherries and apricots. Andrew didn't care for them and they sat in my cupboard gathering dust but too precious to throw out.By now the fruit was getting old and past its prime but still . . . throwing it out didn't seem the right thing to do.Instead I pureed it and made it into fruit leather. It really couldn't be easier. Once you have the puree you can either make it in your oven or in a dehydrator (we happen to have a dehydrator left over from a time when Andrew thought he wanted to...

Matcha And Peach Pate de Fruit Macarons
2009-09-03 06:13:00
When Spring and Summer roll around, I think in shades of pinks and reds. When Fall and Winter point their nose, I am all about the blues and the purples. Greens are oranges are not my colors. Nope. And yet, the first thing I thought about with the first sign of cooler mornings and breezy nights were Matcha and Peach Pate de Fruits Macarons. Enjoying the last bit of summer produce while cozying up to the subtle taste of matcha tea.Lately, the mere mention of tea evocates long talks on the porch and a light chill on a late night walk. You can feel the air changing. I can finally feel some coolness under my feet when I let the dogs out early in the morning. I can almost hear the grass crisp up as we come down, ready for us. These first few days of September have really been quite Fall-ish and are probably temporary due a hurricane being just around the corner. Nevertheless, every time this lovely Fall breeze enters the house, we just stop whatever we are doing and enjoy for a few secon...

ADVANTAGES OF PROCESSING ENTIRE FRUIT or BERRY INTO A JUICE PRODUCT
2009-06-14 19:22:00
Most juice products on the market today filter out the fruit or berry from their juice products.  There are advantages and disadvantages when doing this.  The advantages are that the microsolif particles are filtered out of the juice, making the liquid clearer and reducing the settling and separation from the filtered liquid.  This is more commercially viable, as the appearance of the final product has a more pristine appearance.  Also, the juice product doesn’t usually have to be stirred or shaken before consuming.  The ease and convenience of this practice if far more popular for sale to the mainstream user. While filtering out the peel pulp and seed extracts is a more popular method, there are distinct advantages of atomizing the entire fruit or berry into the final product.  Much more of the fiber and other nutritional benefits are lost when the solid particles are filtered out of the juice.  For those more interested in getting the full benefits from a juice produc...
Strawberry and Rhubarb Pate De Fruit
2009-06-07 17:06:00
As I woke up this morning, I quickly put on my shoes and ran downstairs to get the boat ready for a little outing. We were indeed rushing, grabing pieces of buttered toast and ushering the dogs up and down the stairs. You see it's rain season here, so every opportunity to be out and about in a dry and sunny moment is fully taken advantage of. We got all the way to the boat landing and all of a sudden the clouds darkened and the skies broke lose. B. looked at me, hands open to the sky, raising his shoulders as if to say "sorry sweets, not today".No big deal, being flexible is the name of the game in June around here but there is plenty for me to do to actually tie myself to a chair instead of going around playing on the water (more on that at the end of this post). When things don't go as planned, there are ways to make the situation a little sweeter. Tons sweeter. Mango Mastani (It's seriously addictive)
2009-05-19 13:11:00
My memories of enjoying a Mango Mastani go back a long long way, right to the time when I was about 10 years old. I mean today Pune has some fabulous Mastani places where the Mastani is sold in many different flavours but back then my dad used to take us to a small place , a stall actually, located at Saras Baug (readers from Pune will know the location ) . It was called Vasant Cold Drink House . It belonged to a friend of my dad's and he and sold the most awesome Mango Mastani made from fresh Alphonso mangoes and made in a hand turned ice cream maker. Eating this Mastani was a luxury and at a price as low as Rs.10.00 per glass it was practically free considering today's prices. A Mastani today costs around Rs.60.00 to 70.00 at Sujata Mastani in Pune .So every time I think of Mastani I always remember that small place which gave me my first taste of this beautiful beautiful dessert. No wonder it's also got this royal name . Mastani was a danseuse and wife to Bajirao Peshwa . She ...

Blushing Pink Raspberry Smoothie
2009-05-01 10:53:00
Hey ! Here I am back again so soon . I said I was going to break the bad habit of taking long breaks and I have kept my promise. So what do I have today? Well it's this deliciously refreshing raspberry smoothie that is my son's favourite . And mine too actually although given a choice I really prefer to eat the raspberries just like that . They are so delicious and have sucha heady aroma that I can never have enough. It's very funny actually because believe it or not there was a time when I was not particularly fond of this fruit, but that was because I had yet to taste really great tasting raspberries. I now buy mine from M& S and they are perfect everytime. They are sweet and deliciously tart and I just want to buy them by the kilo. My son and I actually fight over who has eaten more raspberries from the box and who gets the last one. Very often it is I who get to eat more because of course I am snacking on them when the poor guy is in school but then I compensate him by ma...

Poached Quince And Red Fruit Cake
2008-12-11 07:10:00
This is going to be a short post I fear today. I can't shake this cold and can somebody tell me why it is 70F after midnight....talk about throwing a migraine into the loop!! It's December for crying out loud!! Time for mulled wine, sweaters, fireplaces, clementines, hot cocoa, pomegranates, and quinces. Instead the fall/winter produce stalls have to share their space with berries and juicy melons. Upside down, inside out...completely out of the box, which is kind of where I went with this cake. Innocent looking cake, filled with poached quinces, topped with berries, baked and served in a box used for Brie or Camembert instead. The idea came to me over lunch the other day as we were finishing the last of the Brie and while we were planning our friend J.'s birthday party for Friday. J. is a prankster. A good one for sure but it's pretty much non stop with him. A get together with him and his wife is never just that. On the ride to their house, we are always wondering what he's go...

A Buttercream Weekend - In Need Of Fruit!
2008-11-10 07:35:00
Update 1: for a first account of the weekend, read John's post here.Update 2: Sorry for the confusion but this was not the wedding cake, I was just dipping into the archives to illustrate the buttercream. As you can see I am using a little trip in the archives to sum up the last 5 days spent at Lisa's for her wedding. There was a lot of buttercream indeed, a little over 6 pounds of it actually for her wedding cake. I am still at her house and won't be back until later tonight but I will run some funny-interesting numbers for you later in the week. The food was beyond good, the people and friends I met were absolutely fantastic and even though there were quite a few nights that led to a 5am bed time, when we finally sat down this afternoon there was a huge smile on everybody's face a couple of miles long. I have so many stories and memories that it is all a big happy blur in my head right now and as soon as I download and go through all the pictures tomorrow, I will make sure to g...
Fruit Basket
2008-11-08 05:06:00
Visit Pishin at this time of the year and one finds thousands of acres of fruit orchards. The rich harvest of apples, grapes, plums, peaches and apricots is seen every where. I discovered the area, and the taste of the fruit, during my stay at the School of Infantry and Tactics, Quetta when we used to walk miles and miles for training maneuvers. It is still the same.Legend attributes the origin of the name Pishin to a son of the Emperor Afrasiab. Until the middle of the 18 th century, when Quetta finally passed into the hands of Brahvi rulers, the history of Pishin is identical with the province of Kandahar. The earliest mention of Pishin is found in the ancient writing in which "Pishinorha" is described as a valley in an elevated part of the country and containing a barren level plain.Little is known of the history of Pishin up to the 13th century. It was in 1221 that Kandahar and its dependencies passed into the hands of the Mughals. During the first half of the 15 th century, Kan...

Street Food - Fruit Stalls
2008-11-07 15:52:00
I seem to recall growing up in England that a pineapple was regarded as a valuable item... wow, tropical fruit! And things like mangos and papayas were just words. Even the humble banana was a special treat. Maybe my memories are hazy, but fruit in England meant apples and pears, plums and maybe peaches. Oranges were not uncommon, and there were always satsumas at Christmas time! There were raspberries in season, and we often went blackberry picking. The words "tropical fruit" brought to mind jungles, far away places, unreachable lands. This was 30 years ago. Holidays to a place like Thailand were all but unheard of. A few brave backpackers maybe, when backpacking was still an adventure! What is "Street food"? Well, I mean anything that is not a restaurant really - simple roadside stalls, sometimes with wheels or built onto the side of motorbikes. Temporary noodle joints that open in the evening outside shops that have closed for the day. Hawkers carrying baskets of snacks, grilled c...

Veggie Wednesday: The Forbidden Fruit
2008-09-10 19:36:00
Apple season is one of my favorites and this is one of my favorite recipes to go with it, Nana's Apple Cake. A bowl filled with the promise of good things to come. Sliced apples in a 9x13 baking pan. Butter cubed to help it soften quicker. Sugar added. Sugar and butter creamed together and eggs added to the mix. Flour and baking powder tossed in. A soft dough. Take not of the old silver fork - that's a must for mixing! Well, maybe not a must, but it works for me. Sugar with freshly ground nutmeg (the only way I use it) and cinnamon. Apples sprinkled with the cinnamon-nutmeg sugar. Spoons of dough tops the apples. Play 'connect-the-dots' and spread them over the apples. Even if it doesn't look like it will cover them all, or there are holes, don't you worry - it will bake together and be perfect. Top with more cinnamon-nutmeg sugar and...Surprise! The final result and full recipe are at Short Order Mom.

Tuesdays with Dorie: Summer Fruit Galette
2008-07-29 12:02:00
This week's recipe on page 366-367 from Baking: From my home to yours: Summer Fruit Galette has been selected by Michelle from Michelle in Colorado Springs. Galette designates different types of round and flat crusty cakes or a buckwheat crpe. It 's also a colloquial expression for money or means disc = record My fellow blogger Vronique told me, that all galettes, which aren't crpes are easy to transport, like this Summer Fruit Galette For the preparation you roll out half of the Good for Almost Everything Pie Dough, coat it with fruits and use a kind of custard - egg, sugar and butter. IMHO this custard gives the galette a strange look, Steph said it has a sort of "snotty" looking. A agree with that, perhaps that's the reason why there's no picture in the book? In any case, the taste was good. For the same reason as last week I substituted the rhubarb with redcurrants. I followed the advice to freeze the galette 15 minutes before baking. This time a crisp crust, no...

Zucchinis or Squashes Setting Small Fruit? Absence of Bees May Require Han
2008-07-09 10:49:00
More than the economy is falling on hard times these days. A potentially huge problem is looming for gardeners and food growers everywhere. I just had a friend share with me that, in her area, zucchinis aren’t setting full fruits. So I checked my plants and , lo and behold, found some developmentally challenged zukes in my own garden. Confirmed in newspapers and online sources, many zucchini and squash plants are setting miniature or quickly rotting fruits. The reason? The decline of the honeybees is limiting the number of pollinated zucchini. This is because all squash plants (having a male and female flower) require outside aid for pollination to occur. There is a relatively easy solution for the backyard gardener and small grower — attracting more bees and/or hand pollinating. For the small gardener, hand-pollinating is the quickest way to ensure this year’s crop. So how does one hand-pollinate zucchini (or any squash)? Read on. Zucchini Fail to Set Fruit Prop...

Miracle Fruit Party!
2008-06-16 01:42:00
This past Friday, I hosted a party for my fellow Baltimore food bloggers. The special guest? Miracle fruit! For those of you who aren't familiar with it, miracle fruit is a tiny berry that, when eaten, causes sour foods to taste sweet. The berries contain a protein that is aptly named miraculin. Miraculin binds to the sweet receptors on taste buds but it doesn't trigger the taste bud.
