Save the date: Seed Swap at Chicago Flower & Garden Show
2012-02-01 22:46:00
For the past few years I’ve been organizing a seed swap at the Chicago Flower & Garden Show among a few friends (sometimes strangers too) at the Chicago Flower & Garden Show. We referred to it as a “shady seed swap” because we operated without permission of the flower show, and sometimes would sneak off into an empty room... Read more »

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM for short) has roots that extend back thousands of years, with seeds in folk cures that were already old when ancient Chinese scholars first began writing them down. It's no wonder, then, that one of China's oldest official medicinal plants gardens has been declared by Guinness World Records to be the world's largest of its kind.

I love this place. This place is like Chinese version of Denny's. Nice decor, cozy booth, open late, good food, but the service was meh. A Visit to the School Garden at Ak Lu'um Waldorf School
2011-06-02 15:29:00
The teachers and students at Ak Lu'um Waldorf School in Playa del Carmen have been working hard on their bio-dynamic garden beds and are starting to see the fruits of their labors. The heirloom tomatoes are ripening on the vines and the peppers and squash plants are covered with blossoms that will soon transform into bright colorful vegetables. We have been bone dry for two months and the recent rains have been a godsend to all things green. The sudden rise in moisture in the soil has caused some splitting in the thinner skinned tomatoes but other than that, the plants are thriving. You can almost hear them saying "thank you!". (That's a little anthroposophic humor for you Waldorf folks). The papaya and banana trees that surround the school are all reaching for the sun and laden with fruit.         The garden beds are all raised, a necessary design choice when trying to cultivate anything in this region as chiseling holes into th...
Community Garden Fundraisers This Thursday
2011-05-23 18:50:00
Two community gardens in the area are having fundraisers this Thursday, May 26th 2011. The Peterson Garden's Swing Into Spring event features live music, dancing and special MC Mike Nowak, host of "The Mike Nowak Show" on WCPT. That same evening the Forest Park Community Garden is hosting their very first fundraiser for their garden that features a silent auction and raffle prizes. Both community gardens have gardeners that are active in the online gardening community in Chicago and people who I consider to be friends. If you can check out the links provided and choose between one of the two ticket prices both groups have made available.  Update: Someone's ran their automobile into part of the fence at the Peterson Garden...
Wastewater Garden Specialist Needed in Belize!
2011-05-06 05:17:00
As many "Life's a Beach" readers well know, Rob and I have spent a fair amount of time in Belize. We have explored a vast majority of the mainland and have great pals on Ambergris Caye who we keep in touch with and visit faithfully once or twice a year. On one of my first visits to the island, I reached out and made plans to meet Laurie Norton, better known in the blog-o-sphere as "Tacogirl". We have similar interests and hit it off immediately. During that visit, Laurie brought me to visit Holy Cross Anglican School located north of San Pedro in an area known as San Mateo. Words are really not sufficient to describe the level of poverty in San Mateo. You really need to see it, smell it, walk across the makeshift bridges elevated just inches over a swamp of sewage and waste to take it all in properly. A few years back, I wrote an article for Blog Action Day highlighting the plight of the residents of this "neighborhood". It will give you a good over...

2011-05-04 16:06:00
A really special treat for Mom this year would be for you to help her set up an edible garden.  Imagine the fun of fresh tomatoes, squash, and herbs growing right outside the kitchen, helping Mom provide fresh and tasty meals with her very own ingredients!  If your thumb is more grey than green, you can always get help from Jeanne Pinsof Nolan, The Organic Gardener.  She is available to help you plan, plant, and nurture your own edible garden.  Jeanne is the expert who helps me plant my own garden every year.Otherwise for Mother's Day, you can take Mom out for Brunch.  Our Brunch got a nice review in Michigan Avenue magazine.  We are all sold out at Prairie...
Osama Bin Laden is Dead, Plant a 'Peace' Rose in Your Garden
2011-05-02 18:41:00
On Sunday night President Obama addressed the country to inform us that Osama Bin Laden had been killed. Coincidentally, 66 years to the date the world learned that Hitler had committed suicide. While many are celebrating this historic occasion my- thoughts are turning to the victims of 9/11, the soldiers and innocent civilians that have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. While the word "peace" can only be found once in the remarks by President Obama on Osama Bin Laden, that's what I'm thinking of today. Rosa 'Peace' is said to be the most widely planted rose in the world. It was developed by French horticulturist -;Francois Meilland, and was set to be introduced prior to World War II where it was to be named in honor...
Good News in the Garden - More on Spring in Wyoming
2011-04-07 02:50:00
Some great news on the gardening/brewing front, at least 9 out of 10 of our hops plants lived through the winter. I have to admit being pleasantly surprised. We had some very cold days this winter -44 fahrenheit according to our outdoor thermometer, and even in the photos I have uploaded you can see frost heave in the hops bed.  We planted 5 varieties of hop rhizomes last year, and were very lucky getting a reasonable batch of hops for brewing in our first year from two of the varieties. I am pleased to see that all of the varieties have survived, though one plant hasn't yet broken the surface - we will have to see if it catches up later, or if it is a casualty.
Garden Books for Wannabe Urban Farmers
2011-03-22 21:43:00
These three books were recently sent to me by publishers to review. Instead of reviewing them individually, I'll group them together in this post as they would be beneficial to urban gardeners interested in hobby farming, urban farming and growing their own in a kitchen garden.Michael and Audrey Levatino are not farmers by profession, they have office jobs that they keep to pay the bills and hobby farm by growing and selling vegetables, flowers, eggs and honey.  The Joy of Hobby Farming offers practical advice for wannabe farmers who aren't quite ready to give up their careers and take up farming full-time. There's no romanticizing of hobby farming here, just the kind of advice you'd get from your farmer neighbor if...

Japanese garden photo courtesy of Chicago Botanic Garden. The Chicago Botanic Garden is placing a traditional Japanese "wishing tree" so that visitors can write messages that will be attached to the tree to recognize the disaster in Japan. The potted Japanese maple will be located near the Crescent Garden from March 18 through the 27. For those who can't make it to the Garden, wishes and messages of sympathy can also be posted to the Garden's web site and Facebook page. Free Garden Seeds at Chicago Flower Show
2011-03-10 20:58:00
If you're going to the final weekend of the Chicago Flower and Garden Show there are a lot of seeds you can buy from the Landreth Seeds booth, but there are also some free seeds available. The Smith & Hawken display has these paper garden stakes with basil seeds embedded. You simply insert the paper into some soil and the seeds should sprout. JULIE, Inc., is giving away free packets of cosmos seeds, which are among the easiest plants to grow from seeds, to raise awareness about their service that locates utility lines- below ground before you dig in your garden. Speaking of seeds, voting for One Seed Chicago 2011 ends on April 1st, 2011. If you live in Chicago vote for one...
Chicago Blackhawks Garden at the Chicago Flower Show
2011-03-10 07:05:00
This year's theme of "The Sport of Gardening" at the Chicago Flower & Garden Show is best exemplified by the garden installation by Christy Webber Landscapes, who teamed with the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks organization. Of all the garden displays this year this particular garden is my favorite, and I don't even follow sports! Not only is it in keeping with the sports theme, it takes a garden them and elevates it beyond the kitschy and creates something beautiful that even I wouldn't mind replicated in my yard.Use the arrow in the top-right corner of the box below to navigate through the photo gallery. ...

Free Tickets to Chicago Flower & Garden Show 2011
2011-02-10 19:24:00
It may not seem like it out there but spring is on the way. The 17th annual Chicago Flower & Garden Show will return to Navy Pier on Saturday, March 5, through Sunday, March 13. This year's theme is "The Sport of Gardening," and will highlight some of the top Midwest landscapers, growers and garden designers. There's more than 100 garden seminars & workshops, a Marketplace, potting parties, table scapes and the presentation of the Horticulture Competitions winners in collaboration with the Chicago Botanic Garden. Plus, the people. The best part of the show, in my opinion, is meeting with friends and family and taking in the show together. The Chicago Flower & Garden Show and Culloton Strategies are...
Love in the Lurie Garden
2011-02-01 17:00:00
During the spring and summer months the Lurie Garden at Millennium Park is prime courting and breeding grounds for many species in our area. You can observe red-winged black birds, bees, butterflies, plants and even, uh, humans engaging in mating rituals. Sometimes, the public displays of affection can be too much to stomach when you're there to take pictures of what's in bloom. What is it about the Lurie Garden that puts so many in the mood for love? ...

Northwestern Heads to Madison Square Garden; Can they finish Pre-Conference
2010-12-17 05:39:00
With their 78-62 win over American University on Thursday night, the Northwestern Wildcats improved to 7-0 on the season. They'll now head to the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival with a perfect record where they'll take on St. Francis (Pa.) at 6pm Monday and then St. John's (in a de facto road game) or Davidson the following day at a time TBD. It'll most likely be the Johnnies, led by charismatic new first year coach  Steve Lavin. However, Coach Lav's bunch is struggling this season, with losses already to St. Bonaventure, Fordham and St. Mary's. There's been nothing "saintly" about their play so far, and as vulnerable as the Red Storm have looked, they're the best opponent/possible opponent NU...

Visiting Corregidor would surely give you a clear picture of what happened in the past. One of the attractions in Corregidor aside from its huge mortars is the Japanese Garden of Peace. Visiting the Phuket Butterfly Garden
2010-11-04 14:52:00
We've been to the Phuket Butterfly Garden a few times, it's only a couple of miles from our house and keeps the kids entertained in an educational way. I have blogged about it before a couple of years ago, but I knew that the place had expanded, and indeed is still expanding, currently adding a section all about the life cycle of the silk worm/moth (educational, and with the added bonus of being able to sell silk souvenirs in the gift shop!). A perfect mornings entertainment for the family - we went again on a grey October day after some noodles at a nearby restaurant. Was not really a beach day, or a day for outdoor exploration, and who doesn't love butterflies?Mum and Dad were visiting from the UK, and were armed with cameras. I wanted to get some new butterfly pictures, and my daughter brought her camera too. I think Mum and Dad could have stayed all day! Entrance is still 300 Baht for adults. There is a lower entry fee for locals, which I qualify for too. If you want to see l...
