Lurie Garden's Summer Intern on Garden's Design
2009-11-30 19:03:00
Guest post by Benjamin Futa, photos by me.This past summer, I had the fortune and privilege to be accepted as the intern with the Lurie Garden in Millennium Park. Having completed only a single semester of my landscape architecture and horticulture college career at the time I applies, I assumed my application would be turned down on those grounds alone. However, as the weeks went by and I received one, two, then three interviews, I began to wonder if my earlier skepticism was justified. I still remember my over-brimming excitement and enthusiasm when I received the job offer. At the time, I had no way of knowing that my expectations would pale in comparison to the stunning and life changing...
Garden Book: "Bulb" by Anna Pavord
2009-11-22 06:37:00
Earlier this month, I was offered a review copy of Bulb by Anna Pavord and the chance to talk to the author on the phone while she was visiting the U.S. to tape The Martha Stewart show. I have to admit I wasn't aware of her bestselling book, The Tulip, but as a grower of bulbs I agreed to look at the book with a passing interest. I've purchased books on bulbs before only to be disappointed in them. Sometimes, these kinds of specialty books only skim the surface of the variety of bulbs available. They seem to be published just to boost sales. When the UPS guy dropped off Bulb I sat the package to the side, certain...
Chicago's Lurie Garden in November '09
2009-11-20 01:42:00
The Lurie Garden in the fall is just as beautiful as it is during the spring and summer. I stopped by today for a quick visit and realized what I'd been missing by not visiting the garden during this season. It is filled with rich earth tones, swaying grasses and seed heads and few visitors on a cloudy day like today....

'The Garden Conversations' Documents the 61st Street Community Ga
2009-11-01 23:33:00
Photo by Patricia Evans used with permission of www.invisibleinstitute.comAs the camera passes by an unidentified woman she asks, "Are you making a documentary about the death of the garden?" Off camera a man's voice responds, "No, it's the life of the garden." The Garden Conversations is a collaborative effort between videographer Aaron Cahan, photographer Patricia Evans, and writer Jamie Kalven about the gardeners of the 61st Street Community Garden. For nine years gardeners have cultivated land owned by the University of Chicago-- at the intersection of 61st Street and Dorchester Avenue-- on the South Side of Chicago. This past summer the gardeners were given notice that they would have to vacate the property by the end of October, because the...
"Cover Chicago Garden in Black Plastic"
2009-10-31 22:00:00
While looking over the stats for my MrBrownThumb garden blog I noticed that someone recently visited after searching for, "cover Chicago garden in black plastic." The gardener must have been looking for information on weed deterrents. I've seen people use black plastic bags, which are different than the landscaping plastic you'll find at your local garden center. There is also a landscaping fabric which works just as well and allows air and water to reach the soil easier. A few years ago I was given a roll of landscaping fabric by a fellow gardener and it has sat underneath the front stairs, unused....
Garden DIY – How to Clean Your Yard with Rental Goats!
2009-10-29 12:31:00
You know, everytime I go to the zoo, one of my favorite animals to pet are the goats.  They are so friendly and cool.  But I guess goats can be used to clean all those unwanted bushes in your garden/yard as they can practically eat anything!  This is such a great idea, especially if you have been resorting to machines and other methods that pollute our environment and add to the carbon footprint.  And yes, “rental” goats.  If you do rent some goats, I am sure your kids would enjoy them too. With that in mind, take a look at this: brush-clearing goats! That’s right, rather than spending tons of money and time on diesel-powered machines, filing the proper permits, and administering dangerous herbicides, the Seattle-based Rent-a-Ruminant organization will loan your a team of 100 goats for all your brush-clearing needs—all at a very modest rates. via bb Brought to you by: Zedomax.com Garden DIY – How to Clean Your Yard with Rental Goats! clean, DIY, Featur...

Container Garden Spider Check
2009-10-21 20:26:00
Over the weekend as I was emptying out my container gardens and placing the containers underneath the stairs for the winter I got a few surprises. I know spiders are beneficial insects to have in the garden, but I can't help be creeped out by spiders. As I was putting the pots away I kept finding spiders crawling on my hands ( fortunately, I was wearing gloves) and arms. In my garden spiders have a tendency of laying eggs or overwintering under the rims of pots, even though they have the whole yard to do this in....

Mobile garden hopes to hit the rails next April
2009-10-20 13:00:00
Joe Baldwin is hoping to bring a native plant garden to the masses via a flatbed CTA car next spring.Baldwin is talking with the CTA about all the details. A CTA spokeswoman said there is no agreement yet, but the transit agency is putting together a cost estimate. The CTA still needs more technical information and whether it's even feasible. Some details can be found at the Mobile Garden site, including prototype photos like the one shown here. Good luck on this. Seems like a cool, but possibly expensive project....

Breakfast from my Garden
2009-09-05 17:20:00
One of the best thing about summer is getting up early in the morning and having coffee out in my garden.  I like the peace and quiet before the rest of my family wakes up and the demands begin.  I take a little time to think about nothing but my garden.  If it rains and we have a hot day following the rain everything grows in leaps and bounds.  Each morning I pick the edible flowers including  the nasturtiums, snap dragons, dianthus, and zucchini blossoms. After that I check the tomatoes.  I really like the Matt's Wild Tomatoes.  They grow like crazy and the tomatoes are delicious.  I can always find a cluster to pick and eat.  I have pepper...

Collecting Seeds in the Garden
2009-08-31 23:42:00
Seed saving season in the garden is underway and I thought I'd share some tips that I find useful when trying to save seeds for next year. The first thing I'd recommend for a new frugal gardener to do is start an Emergency Seed Saving Kit. You can place this kit in the glove compartment of your car, your purse or backpack.1. One large freezer bag2. Small pair of scissors or pocketknife. 3. Fine point Sharpie (or similar pen) to write.4. Small notepad.5. Napkins, you probably have tons of them from visits to the drive-thru. Half-sheets of newsprint work just fine.6. Digital camera (optional)....

Powdery Mildew in the Garden
2009-08-31 03:43:00
Powdery mildew is probably the easiest to recognize of all plant diseases in the garden. It is a fungal disease that attacks just about every plant in your garden. A wide variety of fungi cause powdery mildew on different plants, but it is recognized by the appearance of a white or gray coating on the surface of the leaf or stem. It looks like someone sprinkled baking flour or baking soda on your plants or like your garden is covered in dust....

Bet Your Friends to Only Eat a Small Garden Salad
2009-08-24 14:00:00
Photo credit: Ian Do you have friends with whom you will make strange, inexplicable bets simply because you're always trying to one-up each other--well, really, one-down each other? This is what happened when my friends Ian and Ritesh bet me a combined $50 that I could not go to lunch and order just a small garden salad. Before I get into the details of this disturbing engagement of male bravado, let me just say: Do not try to bet your friends to eat just a small garden salad. I am a professional of taking on meaningless, idiotic bets and went into this exercise well-prepared with a carefully calibrated mixture of ego, daring and stupidity. I'm sure, blog reader, that...
Big Brother 11’s Garden Boy Jeff
2009-08-23 06:06:00
Oh my God! Jeff and Jordan are my favorites this season on Big Brother. They remind me a lot of Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson (hmm maybe Newlyweds: Jeff and Jordan is a show in their future?) Anyway, I became overcome and all a flutter and a twitter when Jeff as “garden boy” was revealed. I’m a gardener myself, but don’t look nearly as good in swim trunks and watering can as he does. Jeff can come over and tend my garden as soon as he gets out of the Big Brother house while I lounge by the pool sipping a cool drink and taking in the “hot” scenery!
Garden Tools and Plants at Independent Garden Center Show
2009-08-21 01:26:00
The last post about the Independent Garden Center Show here at Chicago Garden. Garden pots outnumbered plants and a tools at the show, but I spotted a few that I liked.  Echinacea 'Mac N Cheese' and Echinacea 'Tomato Soup' pictured above. Anyone else hungry? I'm told that in Chicago they will be (or already are) available at Gethsemane Garden Center.I'm horrible at photographing under artificial light, so... take my  word for it when I say; these plants look better in person.  ...
Independent Garden Center Show: Garden Pots
2009-08-20 20:51:00
If you were a buyer for an independent garden center and you were in the market for large pots and modern, indoor and outdoor planters for the Gen Y crowd the Independent Garden Center Show 2009 was an embarrassment of riches. I couldn't believe the size of some of these pots, they were large enough to plant a full sized adult. The modern planters caught my eye, even though they'd look out of place in my humble garden. But I wasn't the target for them, they're geared for the condo and townhouse set, but they sure were nice to look at.Here are a few pics of planters I liked....
Independent Garden Center Show: Small Space Gardens
2009-08-20 08:30:00
Some gardening products from the Independent Garden Center Show 2009 to make gardening in urban and small spaces, like balconies, decks and patios easier. While they make looks like they are better suited for utilitarian gardens, like vegetable gardens, there's no reason why these couldn't be used to grow purely ornamental gardens. The images above is of the GardenSoxx by Filtrexx which makes square foot gardening pretty easy. About two to three plants can be grown in the organic landscape and garden planters. They don't have to be used strictly for square foot gardening, the website has a couple of videos demonstrating their versatility. My first thought when I came across these is that they would be great for a roof...
Local Design: Midnight Garden Ride flyer

I was passing by the bulletin board at one of the local Ys and saw this little gem for the upcoming Midnight Garden Ride. Independent Garden Center Show 2009
2009-08-19 04:31:00
Today was the first day of the Independent Garden Center Show 2009 at Navy Pier. It is a trade show were plant growers and manufacturers and distributors of all kinds of gardening items come to display their best to buyers, the independent garden centers across America. The show is not open to the public, but many of the items displayed here will be available for sale in garden centers around Chicago next year. There are so many items it is hard to even begin a blog post about all that one can find there. Over the next couple of days I may post a couple of photos of items I like as I attend the last two days of the...

Pinching Basil Flowers in Herb Garden
2009-08-12 07:26:00
Once basil flowers the leaves tend to taste a little bitter. If you're growing basil in your herb garden on way to extend the plant is to deadhead the flowers. To do this simply pinch off the blooms with your thumb and index finger. If your basil has started flowering and you want to collect seeds for next year allow them to continue flowering. On the other hand, if your intention wasn't to collect seed pinch of a few of the flowers (when young ) and if they're not bitter you can add them to salads, soups or use them as a garnish. Yes, basil flowers are edible too....
Flies That Look Like Bees at Chicago Garden

Urban Bees at Chicago Garden
2009-08-07 23:31:00
Since attending the urban beekeeping lecture I've been paying more attention to the bees in my garden. I've noticed there have been less honeybees in my garden this year. Maybe there is something to the whole CCD thing. But the news hasn't been all bad. With honeybees, for the most part, absent from the garden it has freed me up some time to observe other urban bees. The photo above is of a bumblebee on the popular annual flower, Zinnia. Not being an entomologist if you know the scientific name for any of these bees feel free to ID these bees in the comments section. ...
How To Hybridize Daylilies in Your Garden
2009-08-04 22:29:00
In this post I'm going to use really simple language and not go into much detail, if you need clarification or more info we can talk in the comments section. I will provide some links at the end if you'd like to delve further into the world of hybridizing daylilies. One of the ways you can participate in sex in the garden is to hybridize some of the daylilies in your garden. The two parts of the daylily flower that you need to identify in order to do this is the anther, where the pollen is located, and the stigma, where the pollen is received. In the photo of the daylily flower above I've marked the anthers and pollen...

White House Beer Garden
2009-07-31 02:01:00
Today, the White House garden turned into a beer garden as President Obama hosted Professor Gates and Sgt. James Crowley. Who cares what they talked about and who cares what they drank. Look at what they're sitting on. The outdoor furniture looks like something my mom would have bought from Kmart growing up. I'm talking Kmart before Martha Stewart. In this video from CBSNews you can clearly see what looks like garden furniture behind Sgt. James Crowley. Is that cast iron? Vintage? It looks nice. A lot nicer than the flimsy looking patio set they put on display for the photo op. I love the visual of the bartender walking up to four men sitting in furniture that looks like it...

A Garden in Chicago Growing "Hope"
2009-07-28 03:04:00
On the corner of Wood and Polk Streets in the middle of the University of Illinois at Chicago medicinal center hope grows alongside the periwinkle, aloe and may apple.Situated next to the College of Pharmacy, the Dorothy Bradley Atkins Medicinal Plant Garden was constructed and is maintained in memory of Dorthy Bradley Atkins, who died in 1995. Dorothy Bradley Atkins was a pharmacist who was interested in medicinal plants. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy in 1945....
Garden Path Ideas
2009-07-27 08:10:00
The path in my small urban garden wasn't really planned, it grew out of necessity and convenience. Before I started my garden everyone in the family cut across our "lawn" from the front stairs to the gangway to reach the side and back of the house. Once I started putting in plants I noticed that everyone still walked through the yard the same way and this resulted in plants getting stepped on. When the rains came water puddled and eventually became mud which people stepped in and brought into the house. One day my father showed up with a bunch of large concrete pavers and I took a few to create stepping stones in the garden hoping that people...

Garden Bugs at Chicago Garden
2009-07-26 03:07:00
Right off the bat I want it to be known that I'm not an entomologist but I've managed to identify these few bugs in my garden in Chicago based on Google searches and looking at books. If you find something wrong with an ID of mine, please feel free to speak up and correct me. I present these bugs in an effort to help you understand or identify bugs you find in your garden in Chicago and want to know what they do.The bug above is a mantis or more commonly known as a praying mantis. When I was a kid they were commonly found around here but with the development of several vacant lots they are rare. Some of...
