China Blocks Google - A Look Into Why It Happened
2009-06-26 10:17:00 By Siddarth Raman China has always been a hidden entity in the international community. Not hidden, since it’s so much in the limelight-but more of a secretive entity. What happens in China, stays in China. Advocates of nationalism may debate over the fact that it is this stringent big-picture, big-brother attitude that has helped it become one of the world’s fastest growing economies. The internet recently, even right now has been in a furore over China blocking Google. Censorship is not new to China. However, so far, the internet had not been a very integral target of China’s government. China’s stringent take on banning any content that goes against the views and opinions of the communist Government in reign is very well known. However, there were many people who were hoping that the internet would change things. Press censorship was easy, most hoped the Internet would prove to be a tougher nut to crack. Not so, though. China already has the highest nu...

Google Announces Adsense For Mobile Apps - Opens New Dimension For VAS Play
2009-06-25 07:59:00 We want to contribute to the growth of these mobile applications, which is why we’re happy to announce our beta launch of AdSense for Mobile Applications. And so saying Adsense has sort of opened gates for a mini revolution of sorts in the mobile applications field. It’s a revolution for not many reasons and it is mini for a whole lot more, nevertheless it is an important step. The Adsense for Mobile Apps was rolled out into Beta (another one gone into never ending beta) last night. It is currently accepting applications for Beta testing from app developers though it hasn’t quite opened up for marketers. If you are an app developer you can head over to http://www.google.com/ads/mobil-eapps/ and apply for the Beta program. Wait. Not so fast. The Adsense for Mobile Apps unfortunately is only for high end phones, which means only app developers for Android and IPhone can make any use of it. Also, Google predominantly plans to accept applications for Apps which have a p...

Blogs Cannot Be Monitored All The Time: Google India
2009-06-23 09:30:00 In what seems to be Google’s argument against recent cases for its blogging platform referring to illegitimate and defamatory content, Google India has stated that it cannot monitor its blogging platform all the time in short it cannot be held liable for the content for various reasons. Google’s argument? The company has carried its argument to Bombay High Court over an earlier order restraining the company from allowing the publication of defamatory blogs pertaining to a case filed by Dr Ashwin Mehta alleging defamatory views on over 20 blogs on its blogger platform. It goes on to say,“The blogger service is provided by Google Inc. We (Google India) are not a party to the agreement between Google Inc(USA) and those who use the blog.We have no liability or responsibility for the content of the blog.†It further argues its case by saying that blog-hosting companies cannot monitor what is posted on blogs all the time. This means Google India and other foreign online companie...

Chinese Government Warns Google To Clean Up! Again!
2009-06-23 06:18:00 According to Google “all necessary steps” will be taken to make its Chinese language portal, Google.cn, free of pornographic links. By now almost everyone is aware of the Great Firewall of China, the Chinese Government’s mega plan of internet censorship and surveillance. So what’s the relationship between China and Search Engines like? Well, to say the least, it’s complicated. And the fore runner from the search engines side is obviously the big daddy of search, Google. According to a recent report by Xinhua, the Chinese Government noticed that a lot of Chinese language search results contained pornographic links and wanted it blocked. The Chinese Government wants these particular Chinese search results blocked so they can’t be accessed from any country. The English search queries would remain unaffected though. The report which was released on Thursday says: [Google China] admitted that a “huge amount of porn and lewd information” had been dissemina...

Google Tests New ‘Product Ad’ Format, Is It A Follow-Up To Bing
2009-06-23 05:53:00 WSJ reports that Google is testing new Ad format which would allow the advertisers to pay Google on the basis of the sale completion. This is similar to CPS(Cost Per Sale) but would also have a bidding system where the highest commission bidder along with other preference would bag the Ad slot. The new Ad platform on Google search page would work by allowing Advertisers to set the commission they are willing to pay and then Google’s proprietary matching techniques would decide the best suitable ads on the basis of commission,Ad match to user query and User likeness through CTR among other things. The new ad platform would also allow an advertiser to list more product information and price tag. The new platform is in beta-testing in U.S and is currently by invitation only. The Google has confirmed this move and iterated,â€Test will only be visible to a small number of U.S. users and company is constantly experimenting with new featuresâ€. Google earlier beta tested a CPA(cost-per-a...

New: Use Google Analytics Goals in AdWords
2009-06-18 13:20:00 Google has just announced that you can now use your Analytics Goals in Adwords. Ostensibly, the reasoning as this opens up the Goals that you use in Analytics to analysis in Conversion Optimizer . My guess is that Conversion Optimizer is quite an underused tool and this is another way to plug it for Google. It is a great tool, and a lot of sites could do with the help it could give, but it is rarely used. However, what is more interesting to me (partly because we’ve been talking about conversion tracking in Google Adwords recently in the office), is that this changes the onus from the code insertion type of conversion to a simpler page name based tracking. Page based tracking does have its pitfalls, particularly if your form submits to itself and doesn’t change URL, but it is a far more common form of tracking. It is used in both Google Analytics and our own Apollo Analytics that feeds into our search marketing system. Last year, Google removed the requirement for th...

Redesigned Google Webmaster Tools available to more users
2009-06-17 12:32:00 In May Google announced a redesign to their Webmaster Tools, but when the first announcement was made the new interface was not available as the default for users visiting the tools, only as a “try the new look Google Webmaster Tools” link once you had signed in. The new Google Webmaster Tools now appear to be the default when logging in. This is a useful development for webmaster as it provides a slightly easier interface for users, making it a little clearer what you can get out of using their tools. When you select one of your websites from your list of sites within the tools you now see a “dashboard” type landing page with a summary of some of the information available, including the keywords which lead to impressions on your site and a summary of any crawl errors on the site. The new design also allows you to see sitemaps which have been submitted by any other people who have access to your site, such as your search engine optimisatio...

The future of SEO has BO
2009-06-17 12:20:00 It seems that many consumers don't understand what a web browser is... or know the difference between a browser and a search engine. Take a look at this video compiled by a Google research intern who asked people on the streets of New York. I believe that this is not atypical of the majority of consumer internet users. The search engine is the internet to many people and the reason why Google has become so powerful - and the reason why Search Engine Optimisation (or perhaps Browser Optimisation - BO) is an essential part ofeverybody's marketing strategy today. Search is ubiquitous. This is also the reason upstarts like TweetDeck are trying to become the defacto interface (call it a browser, call it a search engine) for the real-time web including Twitter. They announced today the release of their version for the iPhone and it is already making a splash. They want to replicate Google's success in the new frontier - the mobile, re...

YouTube Integrates Twitter, Google Reader and Facebook; Flickr embraces Twi
2009-06-15 06:19:00 Popular photo uploading service like Twitpic, successful apps on Facebook and other mashup services tell a very important tale. They have become popular not just because they are convenient and add value to the user’s time on a site; but also because they provide such seamless and smooth integration between our favourite hang out spots on the internet. Today saw two very important updates where prominent photo, video, microblogging platforms and social networks embraced each other. This not only helps the users in navigation, but also helps one service to have a visibility in the other service. A win-win situation for everyone I must say. YouTube has added a small feature with vast implications; it is now letting you update your Twitter, Facebook and Google Reader accounts as soon as you upload a new video on your YouTube account! Pretty neat, eh? This of course means that your friends will be seeing a lot more of your YouTube updates in their home page feeds, making the whole pr...

US Results showing up in Google UK SERPs
2009-06-11 13:28:00 As has been reported over at SearchCowBoys, there are at the moment some mysterious Google UK results on lots of different phrases at the moment. At the moment there are a large amount of US based websites appearing in listings on Google UK. This is something that I had noticed on various SEO terms, but whilst I have been doing some keyword research for a client I have found lots of other examples. One of the worst of these examples that I found was a search on Google UK was for "family homes kent" - after the local map listings, the top 7 organic listings for this phrase are all US websites: Hopefully this is some form of short term change, as with Bing currently pushing hard for increased market share, the last thing that Google needs to be doing right now to maintain its share is to lose relevance - as the relevance of its search results has been one of the main factors in Google maintaining it's search market share. This could also have quite an impact on search eng...

Google Woos Advertisers To Advertise On Orkut - Launches Solutions For Larg
2009-06-10 07:55:00 Google has invited advertisers to advertise on Orkut via its blog and also announced a dedicated page for advertisers to know why to advertise one orkut. The only two dedicated pages of geographies for advertising are Brazil and India and there is a generic page for the rest of the world. This shows that India is among the top two advertising markets for orkut and given the growth in digital advertising it probably is the no.1 market. Also the recent launch of a mobile downloadable app for most java phones also points at the growing importance of Indian users and the need to serve the next generation of users whose first access point could very well be the mobile. Here are the statistics disclosed by orkut regarding its Indian userbase for advertisers: 13 million active Indians 5 billion page views from India Average user visits site 10 times a month and spends 13 minutes per visit Over 53% of the audience is under 25 years of age while 31% is between the age group of 25 -34 years ...

SEO Speak: Teleporting
2009-06-09 19:45:00 Beam me up Scotty? We’ve all done it – you know the name of the company you want to visit but you can’t remember their URL – is it .co.uk or .com? When this happens we all do the same thing – visit Google and type in the company name and click on the first result in the SERPs, as this will more than likely be the company you are looking for. Teleporting helps users, who are aware of your brand or company name, search for you directly without having to remember your full URL. If you look at your website stats and view the keywords driving traffic to your site it is more than likely that you will see a high number of people visiting your site from your company name, , URL, core brands, or variations on these. This process of searching for a company name to find their website is called teleporting by Google. Google launched “search within a site” boxes some time ago, following their research into the behaviour of ...

Two Great Google Analytics Hacks
2009-06-08 18:39:00 Google Analytics actually has a large number of features that are not enabled by default, that you can use to customise the information you get. A favourite of our PPC team is the one to expand the PPC information in Analytics, so that it gives you the real keyword and not just the matched term. Here are two that are useful for the organic SEO specialists: 1. Create a regional list of search engines All Google Analytics data is lumped together under a single search engine name, so if you are interested in the regional differences between Google.be and Google.co.uk, you are out of luck. However, this set of custom filters splits the traffic out by regional engine. Tracking regional Search Engines in Google Analytics 2. Use the new rankings information from Google search URLs I’m almost surprised that Google haven’t promoted this one themselves! The new URL string change that Google started introducing in April contains ranking data. This hack allows you to set a ...

Google Changes How Links and NOFOLLOW Tags Are Treated on Page
2009-06-05 18:33:00 At the current SMX Advanced conference (it’s in Seattle) Matt Cutts and Danny Sullivan held a session called You&A which takes audience questions. I first read a transcript of this in the aimClear blog called Is What’s Good for Google Good for SEO? (Kudos to them for the good coverage of the session). The big bombshell in this is the fact that Cutts replied to a question about the fact that Google no longer appear to support Page Rank sculpting. Here’s a simple explanation of what Matt said from SE Roundtable where they also point out that he didn’t mention this a few days ago in one of his videos. So of course there are a lot of blogs out there today e.g. Page rank Sculpting is Dead and how this changes something that previously worked which is not backwards compatible, something that is a change for Google, who usually make advances that built on the success of earlier ones rather than throw them out of the window. I’ve certainly seen some extrem...

UTM campaign tagging and SEO
2009-06-05 16:17:00 I was recently asked the difference between how Google handles Urchin Tracking Module (utm) tagged URLs and other, nonsensical URL strings e.g. why are URLs like www.site.com/thingy?thing1&dull-ID9283 no use for SEO, but it's OK to have a Google tagged URL such as www.site.com/thingy?utm_source=-value1&utm_medium=value2&utm_ca-mpaign=value3. It's not a new topic but it reminded me that there isn't much explanation out there, so here goes... Here's how spiders handle things: Google spiders do recognise strings after the "?", but handle them by not expending any energy on digging deeper. This is because there are so many possible permutations in ecommerce sites that a crawl could take days. So, the spider does recognise them, but doesn't usually follow them. That is why ecommerce URLs like www.domain.com/product?prod=hit-icket&ID=1234 are poor. Google doesn't care that www.domain.com/product is different to www.domain.com/product?prod=hit-icket&...

Google Squared Launched - Crunching Data Providing Information
2009-06-05 07:20:00 Google has officially launched Google Squared on Wednesday, we already gave a glimpse of Google Square in our previous post. Google Squared is an advanced application based on google search that provide search results in form of a spreadsheet like grid called Google Square. Most of us do a comparative study of the products/services we are searching for. First people  search for data then organise the information somewhere mostly in spreadsheet like format and then go ahead with the number crunching. Google has altogether compressed the process into just entering a good search query.  Suppose  somebody want to purchase a Mobile Phone, what most of folks will do is search for couple of Mobiles them compare their features and then find a seller offering best deal. One can spend 3-4 hours easily to grab all this information. Google Square take care of all this in the blink of an eye ,it searches the web and organises the information in form of a spreadsheet based on various attribu...

Google Squared - Hollywood Squares For The Digerati

In a recent move by the Big-G, there is now a way to take all that unstructured data you've been searching for, and collating and sorting it into an orderly spreadsheet of labeled boxes. Literally, that is what Google Squared does. It uses the principles of 'semantic' search, gathering information from multiple sources to present you with all the information required to answer your query. First announced at Google's recent Searchology event, Google Squared is now live and operational in Beta.

2009-06-03 06:48:00 If you are a local business owner like a restaurant or electronics shop there’s a big chance that having an online presence gives you that extra special edge over your competitors. In this 2.0 world, people use Google to not only review products and services but also locate the good ones on the map, and having a good listing can get you a lot on online traffic. This is how Google Local Business Center helps you do that: An interested customer searches for your service on Google Maps or Google, comes across your listing, looks at the reviews and details and makes a decision! Now, Local Business Center has launched a new dashboard for the listing owners where they can have a look at the very own mini version of Google Analytics. The stats in the dashboard can go a long way in getting a detailed study of your incoming customers and thus target them in the right way! E.g. Go for growth with Google (GOOG)
2009-06-02 14:00:00 "Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) remains the dominant search engine on the web," notes Paul Tracy. In his StreetAuthority Market Advisor, he views the stock as a solid buy for growth investors."In economic downturns, one of the first costs most companies cut is advertising. Not surprisingly, over the past year, most companies have slashed their advertising budgets in response to the severe economic downturn."But online ad spending has remained remarkably resilient. GOOG's system targets specific ads based on what users type into their search box, geographic location and other factors. "Google'-s main competitive advantage lies in its dominance of the search market, as well as the scale and reach of its advertising network. The firm has a near two-thirds share of the online search market."The firm is consistently improving upon its sophisticated, proprietary systems so that it can more effectively deliver ads to users who are most like...

Google India launches transliteration bookmarklets for 5 local languages
2009-06-01 06:06:00 India is the home of a mind boggling 1,652 number of languages. And it’s a shame that the vernacular content in India is still in its very nascent stage, with all content being produced in English. Google India in the past has been spending a lot of effort in promoting the use of vernacular content in the country, the lack of which is clearly hurting the growth of internet user base in India. They launched their first transliteration application on Google India Labs two years ago, which let users type in Hindi using an english keyboard. And now they have recently launched transliteration bookmarklets for five Indian languages: Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. Transliteration Bookmarklets is a browser-based java applet that automatically converts the typed text into the supported languages and is browser independent. The main feature of this bookmarklets is that it allows transliteration in almost all the browser form fields so that it can be used on any sites...
