The Fed Resumes Printing
2012-02-08 19:08:00
By Bud Conrad, Casey Research The Federal Reserve recently announced important policy changes after its Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. Here are the three most important takeaways, in its own words: The Committee decided today to keep the target range for the federal funds rate at 0 to 1/4 percent and currently anticipates that economic conditions ? including low rates of resource utilization and a subdued outlook for inflation over the medium run ? are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate at least through late 2014. The Committee judges that inflation at the rate of 2 percent, as measured by the annual change in the price index for personal consumption expenditures, is most . . . → Read More: The Fed Resumes Printing
The State of US Surveillance
2012-02-06 16:17:00
By Doug Hornig, Casey Research Lovers of liberty have seemingly had a good bit to celebrate recently. First, there was an unprecedented outpouring of negative public sentiment about the Congressional bills SOPA (House) and PIPA (Senate); they are legislation that would have thrown a large governmental monkey wrench into the relatively smooth-running cogs of the Internet. Millions of Americans signed online petitions against the bills after seeing websites’ various protests. Google shrouded its search page in black; Wikipedia and Reddit went dark entirely (although Wikipedia could be accessed if one read the information available via clicking the sole link on its protest page); Facebook and Twitter urged users to contact their representatives; and many other core Internet businesses also . . . → Read More: The State of US Surveillance
YOU CAN'T DO THIS ON TWITTER
2012-02-03 19:03:00
Twitter is in the spotlight because of its new and controversial per-country blocking system--the power for governments to censor and withhold public tweets that violate local laws. Although the specifics are a bit murky, according to Foreign Policy magazine, here are 5 things that you can't/shouldn't do on Twitter in the United States, for they can lead to some serious legal trouble: Cyberbullying, pranking police, coordinating unlawful behavior, threatening violence and not removing tweets by request. Check out the full implications of each here and stay out of Twitter trouble!
Do Tax & Regulatory Policies Pose a Threat to the Dollar?
2012-02-02 15:57:00
Which political party will do a better job at preserving the purchasing power of the U.S. Dollar? A common tenet amongst Treasury Secretaries, irrespective of their political affiliation, has been a claim that the U.S. pursues a strong dollar policy. To find out, let’s look at what type of tax and regulatory policies foster a strong dollar.                                         Supply and demand determine the value of anything tradable, including a currency. Noteworthy with regard to the value of a currency is a country’s current account deficit, which can be thought of as the amount foreigners need to buy in a . . . → Read More: Do Tax & Regulatory Policies Pose a Threat to the Dollar?
How government enriches the wealthy at your expense
2012-02-01 22:47:00
This afternoon I attended a luncheon hosted by the Heartland Institute, a long-running, Chicago-based libertarian think tank based downtown. They presented Peter Schweizer to discuss his new book ‘Throw Them All Out.’ Schweizer’s book–which I haven’t yet read–discusses the ways federal legislators members of the executive branch profit from public service legally. Today he spoke of... Read more »
Fed Pledges Low Rates Till Kingdom Come! What It Means..
2012-01-30 17:21:00
Last week, I discussed how the European Central Bank has lost its marbles, launching its own version of quantitative easing. I dubbed it “QE-E.” I also said that QE accomplishes almost nothing for the “real” economy, even if it juices asset markets. And sure enough, we got more proof of that this week (details to follow!). Well, this week it was the Federal Reserve’s turn at the podium and what happened? Policymakers didn’t launch an official QE3 program. But they did promise to keep short-term interest rates low through late 2014 … up from a previous pledge of 2013. Not only that, the Fed also said it would continue with its “Operation Twist” policy of selling shorter-term Treasuries . . . → Read More: Fed Pledges Low Rates Till Kingdom Come! What It Means..
'The Secret Government' Bill Moyers 1987 film (video)
2012-01-26 16:06:00
During the Reagan administration, America's secret-invisible-shadow (Neptune) government (Saturn) perpetrated many naughty things behind our backs in Nicaragua and elsewhere and the fiasco was investigated by Bill Moyers who warned that things would get worse if the American people let them. They've gotten worse. Not far in, you'll see a televised President Reagan in denial (I remember well that performance--not his best--plus, most children can recognize lies when they hear them.) Guess when you shill for corporate globalists with one-world-government as their ultimate goal, it isn't always easy to hide your own sticky fingerprints from turning up all over government cookie jars.Yes, Reagan's natal Jupiter in mid-Scorpio (the Eagle Point) definitely shook its money-maker while he was in office and making backdoor deals with terrorists and other crooks. Birds of a feather? (See I Knew It Was YOU, Reagan.)So if past if prologue and you're concerned about America's future directi...

21 Internet Firms V/S Indian Government In Latest Legal Wrangle
2012-01-19 11:05:00
In a world that seems bent on increased state control and censorship, the World Wide Web is the last vestige of freedom for many. It has helped entire countries rebel against unjust rules and has shrunk the world into one global market. The reason for it being so effective is that there is equality on the internet. Anyone and everyone can make their voice heard. Certain elements have misuses this privilege and governments of some countries have tried to clamp down on the entire internet in retaliation. China is known for its widespread internet censorship, that has alienated the hundreds of millions of Chinese Internet Users from the world. USA is contemplating the SOPA aka Stop Online Piracy Act. Back home, even the Indian Government is determined to try and establish a way of censoring online content. A total of 21 Internet companies, 9 Indian and 12 headed overseas, have been named in this infamous case for failing to block offensive online content on their websites. In an effort...

The US Government Is Bankrupt
2012-01-16 15:05:00
By Doug Casey, Casey Research Everyone knows that the US government is bankrupt and has been for many years. But I thought it might be instructive to see what its current cash-flow situation actually is. At least insofar as it’s possible to get a clear picture. As you know, the so-called Super Committee recently tried to come up with a plan to cut the deficit by $1.5 trillion and failed completely. To anyone who understands the nature of the political process, the failure was, of course, as predictable as it was shameful. What’s even more shameful, though, is that the sought-after $1.5 trillion cut wasn’t meant to apply to the annual budget but to the total budget of the . . . → Read More: The US Government Is Bankrupt
WYCLEF AND THE QUAKE

The following is a makeshift documentary of the devastation that took place during the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Musician and producer, Wyclef Jean, and his associates dived head-first into the mayhem to capture what the world had yet to see. It's been two years since and the effects of the quake have rendered the country helpless still. The end of the video lists the harsh reality in numbers: 316K people perished, 300K injured, 1M orphaned children, and 1.2M homeless. Wyclef's foundation Yelé continues to do what it can to offer relief. Don't forget to support!
VIDEO GAMES AND ARMY GUNS

In a controversial move, the U.S. Army will be teaming up with CTA Digital, makers of guns for video game systems, to create military-branded product for popular combat titles like Call Of Duty 3: Modern Warfare. It is reported that the guns will feature a high level of authenticity including the Army's logo. What's most striking is that the move is part of an effort to recruit more young people into the armed forces via the glorification of games and guns. Nuts!

TELECOM ACT DEMISE
2012-01-06 15:38:00
Just last month, communications giant, Verizon, signed a $3.6 billion dollar deal with "competitors" Comcast, Time Warner, and Bright House Networks. Experts argue that the alliance unofficially spells out the end of the United States' Telecom Act of 1996--a congressional bill that promised consumers fair and competitive tele-communications services. And now a second part of that multi-billion dollar deal is speculated to draw out how each company will actually stay out of one another's way and possibly sell each other's services to overlapping customers--in other words, a cleverly disguised monopoly, as the New York Times reports:

DIGITAL BORDER CROSS
2012-01-04 18:58:00
In an obvious sign of the times The Guardian reports how Canadian citizen, Martin Reisch, was able to successfully cross over into the United States using an iPad that displayed scanned version of his passport. As the story goes, Martin had forgotten his physical passport at home, two-hours back in Montreal. It was a longshot, he admits, but after telling border agents about how he was delivering Christmas gifts for his friend's kids and showing them the digital document, it was a go. Granted, it probably won't happen all the time, it was great for Mr. Reisch to know that his scanned version went a long way. He's even got hopes about it officially being instated:
Ten year boom in government expansion?!?!
2011-12-31 22:00:00
Just caught this in a piece Megan McArdle penned on the growth in Washington, D.C. RACISM IN MEXICAN CHILDREN
2011-12-30 16:12:00
A video for an anti-racism campaign sponsored by the Mexican government is raising all kinds of eyebrows, and hopefully, awareness about the deep-rooted social issue. The almost four minute long piece captures a handful of responses from Mexican children that are asked to differentiate between a white doll and a black doll. When asked loaded questions like which doll is ugly, bad, good, trustworthy, etc., the children almost always attributed the negative qualities to the black doll. Ricardo Bucio Mujica, President of The National Council To Prevent Discrimination, points out that the experiment is meant to highlight some very real social stigmas and perceptions:
GOVERNMENT ON TWITTER
2011-12-28 15:00:00
Advocacy group the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has issued the United States Department of Homeland Security a lawsuit. The reason? They claim that the government is monitoring blogs, message boards, and social media platforms like Twitter without the public's consent. The scrutiny is said to go so far as to pinpoint specific flag words that, in turn, trigger the agency to track and monitor a user's online activity. Hmm, you don't say?
Federal government debt soars
2011-12-27 02:12:00
What does this tale of rising federal government debt mean for the country? Dr Subramaniam Pillay concludes in a recent analysis for Aliran Monthly: A prudent Malaysian government would have saved a sizeable portion of the petroleum revenue from the past few decades as a fund for rainy days. Many other countries have done this. [Read more]
THE RE-EDUCATION OF INDONESIA
2011-12-22 23:34:00
In an attempt to reclaim "lost" youth and restore "moral values," authorities in Indonesia are corralling dozens of punk teens and forcing them to give up their rebellious ways. The effort includes shaving the heads of many of the detainees, ridding them of their punk attire, and forcing them into a strict regimen of religion and military drills. Despite the clamp down, The Guardian reports, many of the teens are still rebelling and sticking to their punk ethics. Here's what one young man had to say about fighting the power:

India Fast Becoming A Prime Hub Of Cybercrime: Government Taking Adequate M
2011-12-19 12:18:00
The past two years have seen a spurt in cybercrime in India. The number of active internet users is rapidly increasing in the country and along with that netizens are becoming more comfortable with various online activities such as online shopping. E-commerce sites are doing excellent business and giving rise to online monetary transactions. It is also exposing consumers to the threat of cybercrime. Social networking sites are another hotbed of such malicious activity. A recent report of over two lakh Facebook accounts being hacked is one such incident. Cybercrime has also revealed that the Indian government is not overtly concerned with national security either. Various GOI websites have been compromised in the last two years. In the last 12 months more than 10 Indian government websites have faced cyber attacks. Yet the government does not seem to be worried or maybe aware of the potential threat such attacks pose. Instead of working towards preventing such attacks from happening...

New Rules for the Government Refinance Program HARP
2011-12-19 06:00:00
I predict the government refinance program, HARP, will be on the lips of many people who own underwater homes. But whether the program will actually bail anybody out is uncertain at this point. It's pretty much the same as the old program with 2 important changes. First, it is now available to investors as well as owner occupants. Second, there is no cap on the amount of the refinance. In the past, it was capped at 125% of market value. These two changes will open the program to more troubled homeowners, but as with any government program, there are a number of restrictions for the government refinance program. Democrats Should Stop Holding Government Funding Hostage VIDEO
2011-12-15 02:21:00
Washington (Dec 14) At a press conference with GOP leaders, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) called on President Obama and Senate Democrats to end the threat of a government shutdown by allowing a bipartisan funding agreement to move forward:?It?s pretty clear to all of us that President Obama and Senator Reid want to threaten a government shutdown so that they can get leverage on a jobs bill because the United States Senate can?t pass one. We?ve got an agreement between appropriators in the House and the Senate ? Democrats and Republicans ? on a bipartisan bill to fund our government. We believe that the responsible thing to do is to move this.?I?m tired of hearing what the Senate can?t do. I think it?s time for us to wait and see what the Senate can do. THE COLLEGE CONSPIRACY

Frightening stuff.
New Danger of a Systemic Collapse
2011-12-13 16:37:00
Some stock investors never seem to learn. They hope and pray for a new government rescue from Washington or Brussels. They wait with bated breath for each official sign of money printing, interest-rate cuts, or financial bailouts. Then, as soon as something is finally announced, they breathe a sigh of relief, applaud with enthusiasm, even buy a stock or two. But it’s a fool’s game. Because within a few months — or even just a few days — the government rescue crumbles, investors run for cover, and, ironically, they begin a whole new cycle of hoping and praying for the NEXT big rescue. Just this year alone, European authorities have held 19 high-level emergency . . . → Read More: New Danger of a Systemic Collapse

Google Lays Bare Government’s Data Removal Pleas

In the light of recent events, Google has released their transparency reports which lay bare the number of data removal requests the Indian Government has been sending them this year. The Government has decided that all offending user generated content should be screened by these Internet companies and removed. Since Kapil Sibal’s press conference yesterday the netizens of India registered a strong protest against Sibal on all social media channels. Regarding the Government and Mr. Sibal’s stand, Google’s report shows that between this January and July there were 358 content removal requests and 68 content removal from various Government agencies. Some 51% of these requests were partially or fully complied with by Google. The report says that, “Google received requests from state and local law-enforcement agencies to remove YouTube videos that displayed protests against social leaders or used offensive language in reference to religious leaders. It?s All Very Taxing

Today’s Outside the Box is something a little different for me. Howard Marks of Oaktree Capital Management has produced a most excellent summary of the problems inherent in "all things taxing" in the US. He delves into not only the specifics but also some of the philosophy of taxation. This is a balanced piece in which he tries to present all sides and arguments, giving us a very real picture of the dilemma we face, and leaving us to draw our own conclusions. Whatever we do going forward, including nothing, the outcome with regard to taxes is going to be difficult if not painful for most of us. Why We Should Help Europe

Crisis has already cost Americans and the rest of the world far more than they probably realize A major component of the big new Euro zone rescue plan is to substantially increase the European EFSF contingency bailout fund, from 440 billion euros to one trillion euros ($1.4 trillion). The fund would then be a substantial firewall, with the ability to lend money to Italy, Greece and other countries at low interest rates, helping them cover their debts until the austerity measures being imposed bring their debt loads under control. It was what the U.S. and other countries advised. In his advice to Euro zone officials, U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner told them they need to leverage their . . . → Read More: Why We Should Help Europe

U.S. Government Confirms Link Between Earthquakes and Hydraulic Fracturing

On 5 November an earthquake measuring 5.6 rattled Oklahoma and was felt as far away as Illinois. In Lincoln County, where most of this past weekend’s seismic incidents were centered, there are 181 injection wells, according to Matt Skinner, an official from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, the agency which oversees oil and gas production in the state. Cause and effect? The practice of injecting water into deep rock formations causes earthquakes, both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Geological Survey have concluded. The Problem with Seeing Government as God

By David Galland, The Casey Report While I haven’t made a scientific study of the topic, I suspect the leading genre for popular entertainment – and for popular delusions of crowds, for that matter – revolves around magical worlds. As illustration, the Harry Potter series will serve. The problem is that there is no such thing as magic, at least not in the mystical sense (versus sleight-of-hand variety). Rather, the physical world, and even the metaphysical world constructed by humans in their ancient and long-running quest for protection from the physical world, operates within the boundaries of certain irrefutable truths. In the first instance, the laws of physics are only rarely found wanting; in the second, basic principles of . . . → Read More: The Problem with Seeing Government as God
