The Future Of Healthcare Via Smartphone’s: Mobile Health Care Anyone?
2012-01-18 05:44:00 The mobile phone has brought about a lot of changes. First it changed the way we communicate with others over telephones. It made the office wireless. Then with the waves of smart-phones launched, it added more and more functionality to the device. With always on 3G, Wireless Sensors, and Cameras added to the mobile phone, it began to get a lot of other uses. Mobiles began to be used for E-Commerce and have now become a separate branch called M-Commerce. They changed digital photography and videography. They changed the way Social Networks operate. They even changed the way we spend our spare time, with a myriad of apps and games available on most smartphone platforms. Mobile phones have another use-case: Mobile Health Care. The average person visits his doctor once or maybe twice a year for a general checkup. At that time, his doctor examines his Blood Pressure, Heart Rate and other variables. If, during the year, his heart rate was abnormal, the doctor has no way of knowing. This...

Health Care ETFs Poised to Repeat Good 2011
2012-01-12 19:44:00 The final numbers are in, and 2011 was officially a “flat” year for the S&P 500. Without dividends, the large-cap stock index was actually down a fraction. With dividends, it gained only 2.1 percent. Today we’ll look at some interesting patterns in last year’s sector action — which was quite different from the broad market. Then I will make an observation about the way 2012 is starting off. Little Sectors Win the Year Standard & Poor’s classifies every individual stock into one of ten primary sectors. They then publish specific indexes for each sector (as well as dozens of sub-sectors within the ten primaries). So let’s see how each sector performed. Some were above-average while others lagged. . . . → Read More: Health Care ETFs Poised to Repeat Good 2011

3 Health Care Stocks That Could Gain 50% or More
2011-11-03 00:30:00 If you want to invest in health care, then wait 'til next year. That's what investors are saying after seeing their stakes in seemingly robust health care stocks fall from grace this year. But as the calendar turns over, I see three stocks in particular that have caught my eye as potential major rebounders. Each of these stocks has at least 50% upside if a few headwinds turn into tailwinds, regardless of how the broader economy fares. Here they are… 1. Intermune (Nasdaq: ITMN) When pursuing up-and-coming biotech stocks, it pays to focus on companies that have significant market opportunities. InterMune, which is targeting the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) market with its Esbriet drug, could well be looking . . . → Read More: 3 Health Care Stocks That Could Gain 50% or More

China Opening Up Health Care For WFOEs
2011-01-18 11:08:00 As regular readers of this blog know, my favorite five industries for foreign investment in China are education, healthcare, food, cleantech/greentech, and software. Healthcare just got even better. The Chinese government has made clear for some time that it seeks to improve healthcare in China and it recently took another step in that direction by announcing that foreign companies may now own private hospitals in China outright. In other words, foreign companies need no longer partner via joint ventures in their ownership of healthcare facilities in China; they can now own them on their own as Wholly Foreign Owned Entities (WFOEs or WOFEs). These foreign-owned private hospitals will be able to formulate their own pricing for services (so long as they do so pursuant to the government's medical pricing policies), be eligible to participate in China's medical insurance system and also be eligible for the same tax exemptions as Chinese private hospitals during the first thr...

David Dreier Opens Health Care Repeal and Replace Debate in House
2011-01-11 23:10:00 Dreier Opens Health Care Repeal and Replace Debate in HouseWASHINGTON, DC ? Congressman David Dreier (R-CA), House Rules Committee Chairman, began the health care repeal and replace debate in the House with the following opening statement:?Today we are taking the first step in fulfilling a key promise to the American people. With this rule, we are setting in motion a process to repeal President Obama?s job-killing health care bill and replace it with real solutions.?This rule takes two important steps. The first is to allow for consideration of a bill to hit the reset button, so to speak, on the very damaging legislation that was passed last year under the guise of health care reform. The second is a resolution directing each of the committees of jurisdiction to craft responsible, effective and economically viable health care solutions.?The resolution lays out very clearly what real reform looks like. Real reform will help, not hinder, job creation. Real reform will lower healt...
EMR Not In Health Care Repeal
2011-01-11 13:03:00 In his first day on the job, newly sworn in Ohio Attorney General (and former US Senator from Ohio) Mike Dewine stated his intent to join the lawsuit filed by other states with regard to last year's health care overhaul legislation. He is fulfilling a campaign promise that is outlined in the video above. The core of the lawsuit states that the federal government does not have the authority to require Americans to purchase health insurance. Last year's health care debate was so confusing, I don't know if anyone really knows what is all in there. But in some discussions recently with physicians, they are encouraging the health care repeal legislation to go through "so we can get rid of all this nonsense electronic medical records." Now, I don't entirely disagree with this statement. However, from what I understand, the electronic medical records legislation passed the House days following the president's inauguration in January 2009 and was signed into law a month later. This w...

Paul Ryan: Health Care Law a 'Fiscal Train Wreck' TEXT VIDEO
2011-01-07 23:01:00 House Budget Committee Chairman on law?s costly consequences January 6, 2011WASHINGTON ? House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan issued the following statement with respect to House Republicans? continued efforts to repeal and replace the Democrats? costly government takeover of health care:?The Democrats' health care law is a budget buster. Misleading claims on its deficit impact exclude the $115 billion needed to implement the law and over $500 billion in double-counting Social Security payroll taxes, CLASS Act premiums, and Medicare reductions. The law was written to measure 10 years of tax increases to offset 6 years of new spending. The Democrats stripped costly provisions that were included in initial score, and enacted them separately to add hundreds of billions of dollars to the deficit. Hiding spending does not reduce spending. There is no question that the creation of a trillion dollar open-ended entitlement is a fiscal train wreck.?To be clear, our dispute is not with ...

Health Care Innovators at #fmecnet
2010-10-29 20:36:00 I went to a bunch of sessions today grouped together under the umbrella of the "Health Care Innovations Network" at the Family Medicine Education Consortium NE region meeting. I'm trying to get people to tweet during the meeting (hashtag #fmecnet). That concept is pretty new here, but to follow what we have so far, you can check it out here. The moderators for the sessions were Paul Grundy, MD, Roland Goetrz, MD, and Edward Zurad, MD. These three are also going to be doing the keynote speeches during this meeting. I really wasn't sure about what I would get out of these sessions. But, I was pleasantly surprised by what I learned. Everyone knows the many weaknesses of the current US model of health care including more payment for procedures as opposed to prevention. But, there is very little heard about those programs who are using different models or care. The models that we heard about included "Health Access Rhode Island," and Scituate Health Alliance. We also heard of physici...

2010-10-20 17:32:00 Mark Ralston/Getty Images / September 4, 2010 Unemployed Americans attend a job fair on the first day of the Labor Day long weekend in the City of El Monte outside of Los Angeles. US unemployment jumped to 9.6 percent in August, the Labor Department said, showing the recovering economy is still struggling to create jobs. In a keenly awaited unemployment report, the department said the economy lost 54,000 jobs last month, a better figure than the 120,000 loss expected by economists. That's the latest headline from Rasmussen Reports. What's driving the Republican surge seems to be strong public opposition to the various rescue packages hatched by the Bush and Obama administrations to yank America out of "the worst recession since...
