The Future Of Healthcare Via Smartphoneās: Mobile Health Care Anyone?
2012-01-18 05:44:00 The mobile phone has brought about a lot of changes. First it changed the way we communicate with others over telephones. It made the office wireless. Then with the waves of smart-phones launched, it added more and more functionality to the device. With always on 3G, Wireless Sensors, and Cameras added to the mobile phone, it began to get a lot of other uses. Mobiles began to be used for E-Commerce and have now become a separate branch called M-Commerce. They changed digital photography and videography. They changed the way Social Networks operate. They even changed the way we spend our spare time, with a myriad of apps and games available on most smartphone platforms. Mobile phones have another use-case: Mobile Health Care. The average person visits his doctor once or maybe twice a year for a general checkup. At that time, his doctor examines his Blood Pressure, Heart Rate and other variables. If, during the year, his heart rate was abnormal, the doctor has no way of knowing. This...

Healthcare stocks
2011-12-08 11:00:00 Healthcare stocks have a place in every investor’s portfolio. Representing 10% of the S&P 500 (by market cap), many healthcare stocks are blue chip companies that have the kind of healthy, stable, and sizable dividends income investors seek. Of course, we can use call options to generate even more annual yield, and Fortune magainze agrees with us: “By selling call options on stocks you already own, you can boost your returns with little risk. Let’s say you bought the stock of drug maker Abbott Laboratories…” Fortune magazine, Oct 17, 2011 What kinds of healthcare companies are we talking about? Stocks that pay at least 3% annual dividend. Healthcare Social Media Faces To Follow
2011-10-27 12:44:00 Thanks so much to the Fierce Health IT site for putting me on a list of "11 Faces to Follow in Healthcare Social Media." You can see the full list at this link, and, let me tell you, it is definitely the "A" list of people. I'm humbled and honored to be a part of it. If you cannot see the graphic above from the site, here is some of what they wrote about me: Why you should follow him: Sevilla says that doctors in the family medicine specialty have a lot to gain from being active members of the social media community. He also says that patients will drive such a movement as they become more acclimated with platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. "[U]sing social media is very important, in my opinion, to help tell our story," Sevilla wrote in a recent blog post. "For too long, I believe that we, as a specialty, have let others define who we are. Social media has a chance to change that." Until this year, Sevilla blogged about patients anonymously as a "release" o...

Apple’s iPad And What It Is Doing For Healthcare
2010-12-27 12:10:00 AĀ report by Healthcare Technology Online in February this year said that iPad is an affordable tablet for point of care applications. And since it has a wider screen, it is more suitable in patient records and medical images than other smartphones, on which most of the doctors worldwide have been relying. The Wi-Fi/3G connectivity in iPad also helps doctors to stay connected to healthcare applications viz. electronic medical record and practice management software. Dr. Edward Bender, A computer programmer and heart surgeon in Cape Girardeau, USA has developed an iPad app that will help doctors and patients predict the risks of heart surgery. For your reference, thisĀ report has ten ways of how iPad has changed the healthcare. There is also news doing the rounds stating that an Israel hospital employs Appleās iPad to help medical staff treat patients, consult them and study diagnostic reports such as X-rays and CT scans remotely. U.S. judge rejects key part of new healthcare law
2010-12-13 19:25:00 In the first of what could be a series of decision leading to the U.S. Supreme Court, a federal judge has ruled that the Obamacare requirement to buy health insurance is illegal. Personally, I thought so too, but the ruling came from a judge appointed by George W. Bush, so perhaps it should not have been unexpected. The health insurance requirement is at the heart of Obamacare, so if the decision holds up, we might see the entire scheme unravel. That would be good. Here is a story on the decision....

Republicans win Big in the Election: Healthcare Bill & Job Loss Dooms t
2010-11-03 04:37:00 The numbers are still coming in across the nation on Tuesday night but the trend is a huge victory for the Republicans who took over the House of Representatives breaking the Democratic hold on government. Voters who are angry with the healthcare reform bill, the lack of jobs and the impending tax increases voted for change. And, change they got. The Tea party and Republicans are gaining seats in the Senate, House and Governor's race, making this election one the most contentious in the history of our government. The Democrats had the power to make change and the American people are rebelling against the decisions that they see are worsening their plight. In one exit poll, 84%...
The End of Affordable Healthcare In the U.S.?
2010-11-01 01:40:00 The Affordable Care Act as part of the newly passed Healthcare Bill wasn't meant to undercut employer health plans for most people in the U.S. for coverage. Pushed through Congress by President Obama who passionately believes that everyone should have health insurance, the new law promised to save the people that have existing health care insurance money on their premiums. Anyone that has seen their 2011 bill for health insurance will attest that health care premiums have increased between 20-40% for the same policy as they currently have. What happened here? And how does the dramatic increase in health insurance affect businesses that may be looking to hire new employees? It appears to be having a significant effect...
2 Ignored Healthcare Stocks with Huge Upside
2010-10-29 06:34:00 In the healthcare industry, when it comes to pharmaceutical drugs, the focus is usually on the major pharmaceutical companies (like Merck (NYSE: MRK) and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ)) that produce the drugs, and the retailers (like CVS (NYSE: CVS) and Walgreen (NYSE: WAG)) that sell them on store shelves or in the pharmacy. This ignores the middlemen that get the drugs from the manufacturer to the retailer, which is an important and growing business that is dominated by three primary players. And though profit margins are miniscule, shareholder returns have been very impressive. Additionally, the valuations of the two largest players are very appealing from an investment standpoint.McKesson (NYSE: MCK) is the largest of the three industry… . . . → Full Story: 2 Ignored Healthcare Stocks with Huge Upside

Dubious ethics of healthcare
2010-10-22 09:55:00 A free-market economy tends to correct itself, while government regulations usually accumulate and increase deviations. Medicare is a perfect example of an anti-market policy. Liberal theory seeks to correct marginal injustices, where the cost of correction is small compared to benefits. In liberal terms, medical care could properly be extended to those who absolutely cannot buy it for themselves, and the care would be kept to a basic minimum. Instead, medicare long ago evolved from insurance into redistribution: providing for patients with existing conditions is not insurance. Medicare artificially increases the number of retirees and thus the ratio of retirees to working-age people. Just as working adults struggle to support the retirees, better healthcare continuously increases their age and further tilts the ratio. The older the retirees, the more expensive healthcare they need. Accordingly, they consume even more medical resources than their already high ratio of the populatio...

"HOPE" -- The NEW voter apathy
2010-10-08 00:30:00 I have held my tongue so long, out of respect for those that I truly respect in this political community, but that is over now. It is amazing to me how so many Democrats are actually surprised, and frankly, struggling to find new and valid excuses for the man on the road to making the "WORST PRESIDENT EVER" look like something of a work horse. Sure, President Obama has accomplished some incrementally important things in his first couple of years in office. I am now in a place where I can comfortably and confidently say "I told you so" about this President of HOPE. I said from the get go that this President was no liberal. I said from the beginning he was no friend of the gay. I said from the beginning that his HOPE message was inconsistent with his political and personal history in public life. I knew he wouldn't deliver. I knew his message was really "You should HOPE that some of this will happen, because it should, but I am not going to get m...
WOW, Democrat Jokes That Seniors Should Be Denied End-Of-Life Healthcare
2010-09-29 23:06:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Democrat Gary McDowell is running to replace Bart Stupak (D, MI) in Michigan's First District and while he may be hoping he might get the votes of seniors coming to the end of their time here on this mortal coil, he sure seems reticent to give them the medical care they'll need to be around much longer after the election! At a campaign appearance, McDowell agreed with those Obamacare supporters that think giving lifesaving medical care to seniors at end of life is a "resource" that needs to be rationed. McDowell even makes a joke of the issue by saying that those that say end-of-life care should be rationed must be "from a safe district" because...
Michigan Home Healthcare Workers Sue State Over Forced Unionization

Say you are helping care for your own developmentally disabled relative or that of another. You are working for a family, not a company, and you are not employed by the state. Then one day you get a letter in the mail that says you have been forced by the state to join a union and henceforth you will be paying dues by having some of your salary removed by the state and given to the union. Does this sound like you are living and working in America? It is if you are a home healthcare worker in the State...
pinkWhale Initiates Indiaās First All-Inclusive Online Healthcare Service
2010-09-03 07:55:00 It comes as a pleasant surprise for all us Indians to witness a revolution in the Online Healthcare industry. The Great Healthcare -a-thon of aught-ten
2010-08-17 06:58:00 If you need me, I will be in one health care establishment or the other. It started with my father's heart cath right before BlogHer. No, wait. I work in a health care facility, it starts there every day. I left town again at the end of last week, and came home to Busy Boy with a raging infected abscess near his eye. Why yes, that does sound familiar, it was one of these. For reasons longer than you care to hear about, I didn't actually see him until around 11:30 pm on Saturday night, so we took a trip to the ER as it was getting worse. They threatened to keep him, but he ended up being discharged, and is much better today. Poor kid, he just started high school last week, but at least they've already taken school pictures. Today, Busy Girl had to go to the orthopedist for some leg pain. It's either raging shin splints or a stress fracture. We went from the MD office to the MRI place, and should have results tomorrow. She'd appreciate some good thoughts, as a f...

Irregularities in Skilled Healthcare Trial
2010-08-07 17:46:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Last month I wrote about the California healthcare case involving Skilled Healthcare LLC. The Nursing Home company was accused by trial lawyers of violating California's regulations governing how many staff members per resident that is required to operate a healthcare facility and lost its case. What struck me is that this case seemed to have been brought to court by trial lawyers and without actual victims or injury and, worse, the $671 million award could bankrupt the company putting thousands of elderly patients out on the street and eliminating hundreds of jobs. Now there is an update on this case that takes it to a whole new level of craziness. Aside from the absurdity of the...

Obama's Back Alley Healthcare
2010-04-14 18:47:00 -By Warner Todd Huston For decades abortion supporters argued that restrictions on abortion would cause women to die in unsafe "back alley abortions" all across the land. This scare tactic was a mantra that seemed to work quite well to spread abortions throughout the states and helped spur the Supreme Court to penumbra its way to a pseudo Constitutional "right" for abortions. But the main thrust of the tactic was ostensibly warning about unsafe medical procedures, a situation that they wanted to change. Flash forward to 2010 and we see President Barack Obama and his Democrats about to send not just abortions, but our entire medial system into a veritable "back alley" situation with a shortage of doctors, rationing,...
Here's a Leftist Spin on Healthcare For You
2010-04-14 18:37:00 -By Warner Todd Huston AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said that Obamacare is a "momentous step toward comprehensive health care." Implicit in that statement is that Obamacare isn't finished and the left fully intends to up the ante even more as time goes on. But that isn't the spin I announced in my headline. Here is something from the AFL-CIONowBlog written by one Mike Hall. Try this on for spin... The bill survived a $100 million lie-and-distortion campaign by Big Insurance to kill it--the same kind of tactics these groups have aimed at health care proposals for six decades. That is some wonderful spin, isn't it? The bill "survived" a distortion campaign designed to "kill it," says Hall. But he's...

Dold: Healthcare, an Historic Missed Opportunity
2010-03-25 03:52:00 From the Bob Dold for Congress campaign (10th District)... The healthcare bill recently passed by Congress and signed into law by the President is an historic missed opportunity that will adversely affect the 10th Congressional District and chill the creation of new jobs. While nobody disputes that healthcare reform is needed, this legislation is the by-product of a corrupt and partisan process that ignored the voices of job creators throughout our country. By more than a 2-to-1 margin, Americans have voiced their opposition to this bill. Unfortunately, their voices fell on the deaf ears of Congress. When presented with an opportunity to work together and craft reforms with consensus, the U.S. Congress chose politics over policy. I have always supported...
