History and utopia
2012-12-21 07:22:00 To talk about values is the toughest part. Proving theorems is straightforward, but how could you prove that two parallel lines do not cross in infinity? The opposite view is just as good. Try talking about suicidal Israeli politics with a worshiper of ethnic-blind democracy. Everything is fine for him: odd Jews become like other people and embrace Arabs. Assimilators do not consider what it means to be like others. Other people have their countries, distinctive secular cultures, and nationalist heroes. Jews have always lacked that. The normality of a nation is measured by it having a country and a culture. Jews normalize by shedding our distinctive features and adopting those of other nations. That is not normalization, but assimilation. Jews do not behave like a normal nation which strives to preserve its distinctiveness. The United States or France assimilate their aliens and integrate them into the existing cultural core. The Torah prescribes likewise: pagan residents of the Je...

The Phoenicians: Master Sea Traders
2012-02-04 17:37:00 Following the rivers of fire for three further days, we reached a gulf named the Southern Horn. In the gulf lay an island with a lake, and in it another island. The second island was full of wild people. By far the greater number were women with hairy bodies. We gave chase to the men but could not catch any, for they all scampered up steep rocks and pelted us with stones. ?The Phoenician explorer Hanno encountering apes along the coast of West Africa, 5th century BC… via The Phoenicians: Master Sea Traders.

Facebook To File $5 Billion IPO: The Biggest In US History
2012-02-02 08:26:00 It is IPO time in Techland once again. Facebook, the world’s biggest social networking service is finally going to file its IPO soon. This IPO has been discussed to no end since the rumors came out some 2-3 months ago. The facts are finally here. The company has planned to file a $5 billion initial public offering. This happened yesterday when the company handed over the necessary paperwork to regulators. It has selected financial majors Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital and JP Morgan to manage the huge IPO. Morgan Stanley will be in a pivotal role in the management of this IPO. Let us put that IPO sum in perspective. Google filed an IPO worth $1.4 billion in 2004. Groupon raised$750 million and got a valuation of $13 billion dollars which was half of the expected valuation. Zynga performed miserably in its IPO filing in this December but still managed to raise $1 billion and get a valuation of $7 billion which was way lesser than the ...

Blind Followers Or Meaningful Dissenters: Facebook vs Occupy Wall Street?
2012-01-29 18:30:00 Whenever a new movement consumes the hearts and minds of a large percentage of the populace, its time to take stock in what really moves these folks to act? The zeitgeist that emanated from Facebook and Occupy Wall Street couldn't be any more different from each other, yet there is an undercurrent that threads the two together. Both attract those that have an overwhelming desire to band together within loosely-knit organizations that welcome all.

Survey suggests family history of psychiatric disorders shapes intellectual
2012-01-27 08:18:00 A hallmark of the individual is the cultivation of personal interests, but for some people, their intellectual pursuits might actually be genetically predetermined. Survey results published by Princeton University researchers in the journal PLoS ONE suggest that a family history of psychiatric conditions such as autism and depression could influence the subjects a person finds engaging. Although preliminary, the findings provide a new look at the oft-studied link between psychiatric conditions and aptitude in the arts or sciences. While previous studies have explored this link by focusing on highly creative individuals or a person?s occupation, the Princeton research indicates that the influence of familial neuropsychiatric traits on personal interests is apparently independent of a person?s talent or career path, and could help form a person?s basic preferences and personality. Princeton researchers surveyed nearly 1,100 students from the University?s Class of 2014 early in the...

On the latest episode of the blog's "The Roots Of..." video series, Q takes an actual q-tip to his cheek and gives the research team a sample of his DNA. Tests later reveal that his lineage traces back to the West African territory of Guinea Bissau, a place that is rich in music influence. Amazing how it all connects!
Tebnin Castle
2012-01-26 13:43:00 The name “Tibnin” is Aramaic and means “constructing buildingt and also known as the “Toron” and “Tor”. The ancients took care of that ancient castle and it is said that the castle were built on a Phoenician one and the Romans reinforced by the Romans. The historian Dr. Philip Hitti wrote that the castle had been demolished again by the kings of the Assyrians and Chaldeans on their way to Tyre, then mentions that it was re-restored in the Greco-Roman which put the garrison to protect the convoys to commercial cities.

10 Women from History Who Should Have Stayed Single
2012-01-05 19:39:00 10 Women from History Who Should Have Stayed Single A word of caution should be headed by any woman who is currently contemplating matrimony. Women throughout history have been making bad marital decisions and often with tragic results. Many of these marriages were strategically arranged, but even if they truly loved the man they married, perhaps they would have been better off staying unwed. Looking back, here are 10 women from history who should have remained single. Joanna of Castile – This intelligent, young beauty from Spain was married to Philip the Handsome at the tender age of 16. Most people would consider this a match made in heaven. A young, beautiful princess wed to a handsome duke, soon to become king and queen. Alas, her husband turned out to be a power hungry philandering cad who drove her literally insane. Katherine of Aragon – Joanna’s sister Katherine didn’t fare much better in her chosen mate. She was the unfortun...

Egyptian Chronicles? Women of the Year #2011 in the Arab world
2012-01-01 15:25:00 Ok I wrote a post about the women that left their mark in Egypt in 2011 and I think we should make one for our ladies of the year in the Arab world , again there is no arrangement in this unorganized list. All the Arab mothers , wives and daughters who lost their husbands and sons in the Arab revolution are on the top of my list. ladies who were killed in the Arab revolutions and who were raped in the Arab revolutions are on the top of my list. Manal and her son after her release The first name that pops in my head without thinking is Manal El Sherif in her role to bring up the rights of the Saudi Women to drive in 2011 to the light , the right2drive campaign that she and other ladies launched in 2011 led to the women?s right to vote in the Kingdom. Of course Tawakel Karman is in my list along with all the Yemeni women who changed the stereotype of Arabian women in the world . Now when it comes to Syria well I got too many names in mind starting from the famous T...

Will The U.S. Constitution Stay Afloat In 2012?

The Egyptian Chronicles? women of the year 2011 : Ladies who made their own
2011-12-30 22:42:00 These lists or rather names have no order. All these names in this list already found their lives turning upside and down in this year 2011. Needless the owner of this blogger herself found that her life has changed upside down in amazing way this way. The Egyptian woman in 2011 just like in 1919 stood and defended the freedom in her country like no other , the Egyptian woman is usual stunning for me just like Egypt. Historical Mentions : The blue bra girl whom I will not share her photo despite it has been engraved in the memories of many as one of the worst moments in our revolution respecting her wish. Strangely when I remember this is not the first time something like to happen when security conscript whether from army or police strips a lady from her clothes in the street in a crackdown. It happened before in the 1990s during the terrorism years , when the security forces used to strip the mothers , wives and daughters of terrorist suspects from their clothes wheth...
RACISM IN MEXICAN CHILDREN
2011-12-30 16:12:00 A video for an anti-racism campaign sponsored by the Mexican government is raising all kinds of eyebrows, and hopefully, awareness about the deep-rooted social issue. The almost four minute long piece captures a handful of responses from Mexican children that are asked to differentiate between a white doll and a black doll. When asked loaded questions like which doll is ugly, bad, good, trustworthy, etc., the children almost always attributed the negative qualities to the black doll. Ricardo Bucio Mujica, President of The National Council To Prevent Discrimination, points out that the experiment is meant to highlight some very real social stigmas and perceptions:
Thai Hua Phuket History Museum
2011-12-30 14:51:00 Time for some more Phuket history and culture! I know we have nice beaches and lots of touristy things to do, but as a long time local resident, I have an interest in the local area, and I think that the long and interesting history of Phuket might surprise a few people! Phuket has several quiet good museums - the Thalang National Museum, the Phuket Tin Mining Museum, and Chinpracha House are all worth a visit. The Thai Hua Museum I have blogged before about 3 years ago when it was newly opened. There was not too much to see beyond an old classroom and some old school photos and books, but entry was free :)(above) Thai Hua Museum EntranceThe Thai Hua Museum has changed quite a bit in the last 3 years. There is an entry fee now (200 Baht) - but I think it's worth that. The museum now has many rooms full of displays and information about the history of Phuket. We visited again a couple of months ago, and we were impressed. There's been a lot of investment here and if you happen to b...
