The Hobbit aún está por ver
2009-08-02 03:36:00

I came across these last night, while I was cleaning out my closet. This was my meager attempt at constructing furry feet for Halloween years ago, when Zack was Frodo.(I see you judging our utter geekitude.)I'm better today. I'm giving a) snuggling on the couch with both kids after school while watching a rotten (my take) movie they loved and b) writing yesterday's post, credit.
Exclusive: Christopher Lee On The Hobbit

Exclusive: Christopher Lee On The HobbitHe may play Saruman again Speaking to Christopher Lee earlier this week, as you do, we discovered that the venerable 86-year-old has hopes of dusting off his wizard?s robes to play Saruman again in Guillermo Del Toro?s adaptation of The Hobbit. Now you?re probably asking how the evil white wizard could possibly show his face again when he?s not even featured in The Lord Of The Rings prequel. Well consider the fact that the mooted two-film adaptation will probably be forced to add plenty of new material and Lee?s encyclopaedic knowledge of his character could fill in the gaps.?I?ve read the books time and again,? said the 86-year-old. ?Originally Saruman The White and the rest of the wizards, or the Istari as they call them, were immortal. There were five of them, two of them never appear, I know their names but they never appear, and the only three that are mentioned are Saruman The White, Gandalf The Gr...

Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are expected to write the scripts under the direction of Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro. Preliminary contact has already been made with at least three actors whose "Lord of the Rings" characters also appear in the "Hobbit" storyline: Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum). "We will all be involved in the script in some fashion but the exact definition is about a week away, " said del Toro. "I am all for keeping the actors who originated the parts, as much as availability and their willingness will allow." Del Toro will also be producing Hater with Mark Johnson for Universal Pictures. Based on David Moody's 2006 novel, the thriller is about an epidemic of random violence in which ordinary people strike lethally without warning or remo...

Guillermo del Toro and The Hobbit Sequel
2008-04-28 04:59:00
Since it was first announced, everyone has been wondering what will become of this supposed Hobbit sequel. For the first time publicly Guillermo del Toro spoke publicly to TheOneRing.net about the planned continuation: "You know, I traveled to New Zealand just a little while ago, and one of the main reasons for going was to sit down and talk about the second film. 'The Hobbit', the book, is really one self-contained film, so for the second movie we sat down and worked it out. When we did this we got really excited because this second film is not a 'tag on', it's not 'filler', it's an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative. There will be certain things that we will see from the first movie but from a different point of view, but it will feel like a volume, in the 5 volumes of the entire story. It will not feel like a bridge, I've been hearing it called 'a bridge film', it's not, it's an integral chapter of the story, and I th...

It's Confirmed: Del Toro For The Hobbit
2008-04-26 23:57:00
It's Confirmed: Del Toro For The HobbitGuillermo will definitely direct prequelSource: Variety It's confirmed, we mean it this time. Guillermo del Toro, New Line, MGM, Peter Jackson and all other interested parties have definitely, finally made a deal, and Empire's favourite Mexican will soon be heading to New Zealand for four years to make two back-to-back Hobbit movies. The announcement of perhaps the world's worst-kept secret comes after months of the principals discussing the idea in public, leaking information and generally paving the way for today's news. Now it's confirmed that Del Toro will be moving to NZ after he finishes work on Hellboy 2, and expects to be there for about four years. That means we're looking at release dates in 2011 and 2012, assuming shooting starts next year, for The Hobbit and an in-between-quel set in the 77-odd years that pass between that story and The Lord of the Rings. The films don't have a definite...

Hobbit had 'been to the dentist'
2008-04-19 02:57:00
THE Hobbit, the tiny human fossil found in a cave on an Indonesian island in 2003 and claimed as a new species, was a modern human whose teeth had been worked on by a dentist, possibly in the 1930s, according to a scientist whose new book is set to inflame debate.University of Adelaide professor of biological anthropology and comparative anatomy Maciej Henneberg says in his new book, The Hobbit Trap, that a lower left molar had a filling, a claim that threatens to blow out of the water conjecture by the fossil's describers that the Hobbit is 18,000 years old."What I can see on the ... surface of the (tooth) is incredible," Professor Henneberg writes.University of New England archeologist Mike Morwood, announcing the discovery in October 2004, said the Hobbit was 1.06m tall, weighed about 25kg and had a brain the size of a chimpanzee's.Professor Henneberg and others have already aired doubts about the claims of Peter Brown, also of UNE, who described the fossil for science and decl...

Latest from Guillermo del Toro on The Hobbit
2008-04-05 11:08:00
Until we hear an actual official announcement from New Line / Warner Brothers, anything that Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, or even Ian McKellen says about The Hobbit is unconfirmed. They can talk all they want, but as Guillermo himself says "it's all immaterial until everything is signed and put on paper." With that, on Wednesday the big guns at Entertainment Weekly caught up with Guillermo and, of course, asked him about the latest on The Hobbit. First thing to notice, Guillermo does outright say "I will be involved." Besides that, though, it's the same ol' wait-until-its-ready talk we've heard for a while now. Given the importance of this project, I think its best to leave this update in its original question-and-answer form. Frankly, it's just a brief update with hardly anything new. But it is at least an update that will continue to keep Hobbit fans happy until we get the official word. So where do things stand with you directing The Hobbit? Guillermo: There have been ...

Ian McKellen Answers Hobbit QuestionsSays he's all for reprising his roleSource: mckellen.com Ian McKellen has always been very good at responding to his fans, via his official website at www.mckellen.com. In his recent batch of 'E-posts', a charmingly old-fangled phrase, he addresses a couple of reader questions about The Hobbit. When asked by one fan if he'll again play Gandalf in the upcoming movie, he said, "Yes I will, if Peter Jackson and I have anything to do with it, he being the producer and me being, on the whole, a very lucky actor...encouragingly, Peter and Fran Walsh have told me they couldn't imagine The Hobbit without their original Gandalf. Their confidence hasn't yet been confirmed by the director Guillermo del Toro but I am keeping my diary free for 2009!"Del Toro told us earlier this year that if he makes the film ? and the dotting of I's and crossing of T's on this deal seems to be taking forever ? that he'd want t...
Sir Ian McKellen Will Return As Gandalf In ‘The Hobbit’
2008-03-26 19:20:00
This is good news. Sir Ian McKellen just confirmed on his personal website that he will indeed return as Gandalf in ‘The Hobbit’ if he and Peter Jackson have anything to do with it.While this is good news, I have to say this. Would anyone actually want to see ‘The Hobbit’ made without McKellen playing as Gandalf? I know I wouldn’t be very interested because the movie wouldn’t feel like a LOTR without his voice as the grey wizard. Here is the Q&A from his website where he brings up the role of Gandalf. Q: So has it come to pass, good Sir McKellen? Shall the dreaming masses with their musty books and their blackened pipes at long last hear those immortal words issue from under that famous nose? “Yes, yes, my dear sir-and I know your name, Mr. Bilbo Baggins. And you do know my name, though you don’t remember that I belong to it. I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me! To think I should have lived to be good-morninged by Belladonna...

McKellen answered numerous fan questions in an E-Post, two of which pertained specifically to The Hobbit. The short of it is that he will be back and he even in fact mentions Guillermo del Toro as the director, but unfortunately there is no signed deal yet and it's still not close to moving into production.
Quaint Hobbit Furniture or Fraud?

Skeletons found in Palau suggest ‘Hobbits’ were just dwarf humansBy Maggie FoxMarch 11, MSNBCWASHINGTON - Tiny skeletons found in the caves of the Pacific islands of Palau undercut the theory that similar remains discovered earlier in Indonesia might be a unique hominid species, researchers reported Monday. The Palau skeletons, which date to between 900 and 2,800 years ago, appear to have belonged to so-called insular dwarfs — modern humans who grew smaller as a result of living on an island, the researchers said. They said their findings, published in the open-access journal PLoS ONE, show it is possible the same thing happened on the Indonesian island of Flores, where small skeletons dating back 15,000 to 18,000 years ago have intrigued scientists since they were discovered in 2004.Some groups have proposed that the Flores hominids, who would have been about 3 feet (1 meter) tall as adults, represented a distinct species called Homo floresiensis.Others argue they were small be...
More Hobbit Controversy
2008-03-11 06:30:00
National Geographic has a breaking story about tiny ancient human skeletons having been discovered on the Pacific island of Palau (also: video story). However, the skeletons are not considered to be evidence for a new species - as is claimed with the Flores 'hobbits' - but instead the size of the individuals has been put down to insular dwarfism. This has led to more questions about whether the Flores hobbit is really unique. However, a number of scientists have pointed out that the new discoveries differ in their morphology to the Hobbit skeletons. Dean Falk, anthropologist at Florida State University, summed it up succinctly: The Palauan remains, she added, are just a set of small bones, representing small-bodied people. "But being small does not make one comparable to Homo floresiensis," she noted. "It makes one small ? period." The new debate comes hot on the heels of the controversy I noted last week, with the suggestion that the 'Hobbits' were perhaps just outcast dwarf ...
