Why Do I Have to Do Homework?
2010-10-23 16:06:00 Like most families, homework is a major topic in our household. learning new skills in classes such as math, takes practice. And homework is about practice. And the more time a student can spend on those skills, the more likely they are to master the material. if it was not assigned for a specific purpose, why was it given at all?
The History of Homework
2010-05-30 02:35:00 One of the ways to understand the once and future role of the arts in school improvement is to poke around in the iconography of schools themselves. What is the history and meaning of bell schedules, of the intercom, of desks in rows, of asphalt playgrounds, of chain-link fences, of pencils, of erasers, of cursive writing, of blackboards, of whiteboards, of calculators, of computers, of notebook paper? Investigating the images and artifacts of public education maps the subjective terrain that arts education advocates work within. How does school culture reach beyond the walls of the school building into the lives of families? The following article, which appeared in the San Francisco Examiner a decade ago, provides some context:HISTORY OF HOMEWORKMid-19th century:...
RedEye Says Our Sex IQ is Low, but Did They Do Their Homework?
2010-05-06 23:21:00 IF Chicago's STI stats are on the rise, it's not because we've become morally unstable, have stopped paying attention in health class, or decided to prioritize reality television over "meaningful" relationships.
Politics, Elections and Homework
2010-04-10 08:14:00 Politics, Elections and Homework elections turn on buzz and negative advertising. That strategy has been well-honed by both sides of the aisle. This approach keeps party faithful from straying too far from their center of political gravity. People do not spend a sufficient amount of time researching the issues or the the candidates. It is, for lack of a better word, homework.

Black History Homework: A Soldier's Story
2010-02-04 02:18:00 Oh, is it already the 3rd day of February aka Black History Month? I must have forgotten because we're living in post-racial America. Dammit, I forgot I was black until I saw my photo in the corner of this screen.Just ask old Chris Matthews who last week experienced mild racial amnesia and didn't realize that President Barack Obama was black. (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio)Yeah, I'm still laughing.I wish we were there, but we haven't really reached post-racial America though we've made great strides. I no more listen to the constant race-baiters than I do the crazies who think that anyone of color is "whining" when they express any opinion on matters of race. And in the spirit of that thinking, I still...

2009-05-17 19:17:00 ASCD’s Dina Strasser, in her blog, The Line, also available at: http://ascd.typepad.com/blog, tackles the homework question by referring to Robert Marzano.Based on Marzano’s work, Art & Science of Teaching, Strasser indicates that,“It is essential for students to not merely be exposed to new knowledge, but actively and authentically work with the knowledge… When teaching procedural skills (how to accomplish something step by step), you also need to allow students to practice those skills. This practice should be frequent and simple at first, giving way to more complex activities. Importantly, students should reflect consistently on their own use of the procedures and come to an understanding that works for them individually: changing, adding, or deleting steps as necessary. When teaching declarative knowledge (concepts or ideas), you need to create activities that allow students to review and revise. By making active corrections, connections, and reflections, students in...

Homework Break
2009-03-11 23:02:00 Big day in two days. Why? Friday is the date of my road test. Yes, I am eighteen years of age, a senior in high school, and I still do not possess my drivers' license. I actually got my permit only recently too around the middle of November. I'm slow at developing these practical skills, I guess. I learned how to tie my shoes at the age of twelve and learned how to ride a bike only a year later. Other life skills, such as cooking, doing laundry, mowing the grass, etc. I still do not know. I ought to learn them soon. I'll be sent off into the ugly world in a matter of three months after graduation. Well, actually that's a lie. I still have four years of staying at home during college to learn those skills. I'm only going to school about fifteen miles away at the University of Scranton. My mother is downstairs calling everybody, receiving calls, and gossiping away. There was a crash on Route 107 (initially she was told that it was on the Casey Highway [or maybe it was business Ro...

Homework...Derailed
2008-08-17 06:33:00 Another day busy with baking and writing and photo homework...until a huge thunderstorm hit the neighborhood and we lost power from 5.30pm or so until 10pm. Others in the neighborhood got their power back on around 7pm but no one can figure out why our street stayed that long without it. It's the summer, there's a creek, there's a dock, a couple of canoe, plenty of kids and animals, so plenty to do without power. We all gathered to grill out, share salads and juicy fruits as we usually do on saturdays so really it did not make that much difference. Except, I was working and had plenty in the oven and lost it all. There is pretty much nothing to do when you have macarons, cakes, tarts, etc...baking in the oven and power cuts off for almost 5 hours. I thought about using the grill but again, all were pretty much used already.I called the electric company to inquire about the delay and the lady was real nice and really there was not much she could do. When she said at 7pm that most ...

Homework...
2008-08-07 06:50:00 This is my homework almost everyday...in a very simplified sum up: baking, taking pictures, eating, and writing. Fortunately the state of my mind is not empty like a consumed cupcake wrapper but full of stories and giddy with excitement. I was having a conversation with Elizabeth the yoga instructor where I teach Pilates and she reminded me that I also needed to breathe. I can't "breathe" and relax in chaos and right now my picture files and documents are in shambles or at least overflowing in all directions....so much so that I forget what I have prepared to post on this blog. It made me happy to found them tonight for next week though!!So I am going to take the next couple of days to organize my head, my files and figure out a way to prevent Bailey from nipping at my apron while I bake...or pull on the tablecloth while I take a picture!Thank you to all of you who left a response to my question the other day. It might have sounded like this problem was happening a lot, rest assure...

British Student Detained For Doing His Homework
2008-05-24 09:09:00 A masters degree student at Nottingham University, who was engaged in research, was detained for six days after his university informed police about al-Qaida relalrled material he he downloaded. Depsite, Nottingham university supervisors insisting to the police the material was directly relevlant to his research, Rizwaan Sabir was heald for nearly a week under the Terrorism Act and accused of downloading material for illegal use. The case highlights what lecturers are claiming is a direct assault on academic freedom led by the government which, in its attempt to put into action a “prevent agenda” against terrorism are preventing the development of necessary intellectual research, which, ironically can assist in efforts to combat terrorism. Sabir was arrested on May 14 after the document was found by a university satff member on an administrator’s computer. The administrator, Hishm Yezza, downloaded the material because the young man could not have afforded costs i...

Dolphins doing homework on "post 1st round" players
2008-04-09 20:58:00 We've spent a lot of time talking about what the Dolphins should/might do with the first overall pick in the draft. However, like many of you, I also feel that the key to this draft will be those middle rounds where valuable starters are found (rounds 2-5). Well Barry Jackson has some info for us on who the Dolphins will be bringing into Davie in the coming days: The Dolphins, who are making linebacker a priority, are bringing in Auburn's Quentin Groves, a potential second-rounder with 26 career sacks, and UNLV's Beau Bell, a potential third-rounder. (FYI: Miami requested more tape of Georgia's Marcus Howard and has closely studied several potential second-round linebackers, including Oklahoma's Curtis Lofton, USC end/linebacker Lawrence Jackson, Purdue's Cliff Avril and Tennessee's Jerod Mayo, although none of those five was booked for visits.) The Dolphins scheduled at least two left tackles for visits, Nebraska's Carl Nicks (highly skilled, but character issues) and...

The Great Homework Debate
2008-04-07 17:38:00 Currently, the Toronto District School Board is putting the finishing touches on the draft of a new homework policy. As reported in the Toronto Star,Based on thousands of interviews with parents, teachers, students and community members, the draft policy would ban homework in kindergarten, confine it to games and family activities up to Grade 2, allow a gradual move to independent homework by Grade 6, but keep it to no more than one hour right through Grade 8.For the board's 89,000 high school students, the new policy would prohibit more than two hours of homework a night. While the parenting public seems to largely agree with this proposal, citing family vacations, outside school activities, etc. as of at least equal importance to homework, as a retired educator I am ambivalent about the policy for a number of reasons.First, when my kids were in high school, there is little doubt that much of their out-of-school time was spent on school assignments, although some of that time was ...
Carp Fishing - Fishery Homework and Lake Mapping
2008-04-06 01:22:00 Carp Fishing - Doing Your Venue HomeworkVery few carp anglers seem to do their own homework these days. Just recently there have been a few debates about some north west carp anglers wanting everything handed to them on a plate. I’ve commented before on how easy it is to just log onto a carp fishing forum and ask what water, what bait and where do I cast?. How any carp angler can pat himself on the back and be pleased at catching a fish when he owes most of it to somebody else’s hard work is beyond me. It does seem that carp fishing is full of the kind of people who’s attitude is ‘I want it, I want it now and I don’t care how I get it’. Carp forums in particular seem to attract these type of anglers in numbers.Working things out for yourself and catching carp on your own terms is so much more rewarding than stooping to begging for information on a carp forum. Imagine the scenario, you’ve just joined a carp water, you know its got some big carp in and catching them is y...

Cancer patient's PSP, medicine, homework stolen
2008-03-27 05:01:00 In Dallas, Texas, while a 7-year-old boy headed to his chemotherapy appointment Tuesday, thieves were at work on his family's car, making off with his medicine, school homework, and video games. If that wasn't enough, it all happened on the day before his birthday. Kyle Springs and his family drove from Oklahoma to Dallas for a monthly chemotherapy treatment for a tumor in his brain. The thieves struck as he and his parents ate breakfast at a Denny's restaurant. "It had my homework and my medicine in it, and I couldn't leave my medicine. I needed to take it," he said. Along with the backpack of medicine, homework, a PlayStation Portable (PSP), and video games, his medical records were stolen as well. According to Kyle's mother, video games helped him escape the pain. "They keep his attention off sitting there, getting that medication that he knows is going to make him sick," Trish Springs said. When authorities heard about Kyle's situation, they stepped ...
Vacation Deals Require Doing Homework
2008-03-11 04:14:00 The broken record statement that isn't going away is that the economy is bad right now. That shouldn't stop you from taking or at least you chose your own price. Ships and planes don't like to leave empty. It takes playing hardbaresearching a possible vacation. In fact with a little extra effort, you may find that the time may be right to plan that next vacation and get a great deal. Cruise lines, airlines, and hotels are feeling the crunch just as hard as the average person. Because of this, look for many deals to show up in the near future in your email, on TV and in ads on the internet. But don't just take those prices as the bottom line. Use one of the many resources on the net like Priceline.com that lets ll sometimes, but try calling and asking the price. When you get the price, tell them what you were looking to spend and see what happens. As things slow down, the person you talk to may not be authorized to make a deal, but you could end up getting a call back....

Jesus Ate My Homework
2008-03-10 13:30:00 What if you were a teacher and you had a pupil who decided to answer quiz questions with "God did it" or "because God said so"? What if you, as a teacher, decided that this student was merely expressing their right to religious freedom and to give them a failing grade, reprimand them or correct them publicly would be a violation of their rights? What if other students caught on to this and began to express their own rights to their religious beliefs over what is taught? Welcome to Oklahoma. The Edmund Sun reports... The Oklahoma House of Representatives Education Committee has just approved House Bill 2211. The bill is expected to pass the full House, and then to go to the Senate. Its authors describe it as promoting freedom of religion in the public schools. The bill requires public schools to guarantee students the right to express their religious viewpoints in a public forum, in class, in homework and in other ways without ...
