Zuccarello Hopes to Help Steer Whale out of Skid
2012-01-26 23:47:00
By Bruce Berlet After a 5-3 victory over the Springfield Falcons on Dec. 31, the Connecticut Whale (19-15-3-5) had a six-point lead over the Adirondack Phantoms in the AHL?s Northeast Division and were within two points of the Eastern Conference?s top spot. But entering a game at the XL Center on Friday night against the surging Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the Whale is on a nine-game winless streak (0-5-1-3). Despite the slump, the Whale still has a nine-game points streak (5-0-1-3) at home since a 5-3 loss to the Hershey Bears on Dec. 9 and a one-point lead over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, who had an eight-game winning streak ended in a 4-3 shootout loss to the visiting Atlantic Division-leading St. John?s IceCaps on Wednesday night. The Whale is two points ahead of Adirondack, which hosts Bridgeport on Friday night, and Albany, which is at Binghamton. No one has been more frustrated during the recent tough times than wing Mats Zuccarello, who has missed the last four games an...

UConn Spoils Rutgers Big East Title Hopes
2011-11-26 21:22:00
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights came into this game looking to secure a share of the Big East title and a possible BCS bid. The UConn Huskies were looking to salvage their season and get closer to becoming bowl-eligible as well as sending off the seniors with a final home win. The Huskies were able to take advantage of some early Rutgers turnovers and good field position on their way to a 40-22 win over the Scarlet Knights in front of 37,857 on Senior Day at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improve to 5-6 (3-3 Big East) while the Scarlet Knights finish their regular season at 8-4 (4-3). Last week, the Huskies allowed the Louisville Cardinals to take the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and that essentially took themselves out of the ball game. Saturday was a different story as the opening kickoff went out of the end zone. The Huskies quickly turned the tables on Rutgers when Sio Moore forced a fumble by Rutgers RB Jawan Jamison that was recove...
Greg Norman hopes Adam Scott gives Tiger Woods a Presidents Cup thrashing
2011-11-15 17:26:00
A face-off between Tiger Woods and Adam Scott at the Presidents Cup tourney in Royal Melbourne GC would certainly make great "must see TV" but is Greg Norman using the Aussie to unload his own sour grapes? The Aussies (?...ha) are "sick and tired of losing," said Norman, whose International team hasn't won the Cup since 1998. Furthermore, Greg Norman was "dethroned" by Tiger Woods in the 1990's to become top-golfer in the world. This isn't just a case of "my yacht is bigger than your yacht," this is personal. "Tiger and Greg don't speak," said a source who knows both men. "There's a lot of animosity between them." Greg Norman has turned The Presidents Cup into a battle between Australia (not necessarily the "International Team") and the USA. Doing so, however, has had it's ramifications, with Couples now comparing Aussie golfers to Woods. After Tiger Woods was slammed by Norman, Couples retorted with a comparative dig at Melbourne golfer Robert Allenby. "Robe...

Details emerge on Fullerton L murder; theft victim hopes assailant will tur
2011-06-17 13:40:00
The Tribune today tells the gripping story of the victim of the iPhone theft at the Fullerton L stop in last March, and the thief who became a murderer seconds later when he pushed a 68-year-old woman to her death down the station stairway. It's worth the read. And it's worth repeating the description of the man wanted for murder in the crime. From the Tribune sidebar story:"The suspect in the March 28 incident was described as a black male, between 17 and 25 year old, 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing between 170 and 220 pounds. Police have said he was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black hat and a black jacket with...
Union Thug Teacher Hopes Opponents Get Roughed Up by Teamsters
2011-05-10 18:30:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Like any union thug, when confronted by someone that simply won't bend to union will, why, the first thing they resort to is violence -- or at least threats of same -- and this union thug in Washington D.C. is no different than any other. Caught at a protest arranged by unions to attack school choice, the cameras of some Freedom Works folks found a typical unionista that hoped the Teamsters would "kick the asses" of those that dare oppose the unions. She wished violence to descend upon anyone that wants kids to have a better education. Naturally, this union creep also resorted to foul language. Typical union thug....
Events: Will Emanuel Attend "High Hopes" Meeting?
2011-03-17 14:59:00
Earlier this month, Board president Mary Richardson-Lowry apparently agreed to attend a public meeting with the High HOPES campaign, the result of a phone and email campaign among other things.  Now they want Emanuel to show up, too. Think they have a chance?  I have no idea. The meeting is Saturday, April 2, from 11:00-12:30, location TBD. The focus of High HOPES is students being pushed out of CPS schools because of the district's disciplinary policies.  Lots more details below.  ...
DJ LeMahieu hopes to make it to the show
2011-03-07 05:50:00
I was always more of a rock & roll/punk fan growing up, but the area where I grew up was big into house music when I was a teen.  So whenever I see the letters DJ, it conjures up a certain image for me.  Naturally then, even though his surname seems better suited for Zydeco than house music, I can't help but have this silly picture in my head whenever I hear anything about former LSU star and current Cub prospect DJ LeMahieu ...DJ Lemahieu mixing up some ZydecoNow that I've gotten that out of my system, we can talk about D.J. LeMahieu's real talent: hitting a baseball. Baseball America named LeMahieu (the D.J. stands for David John) the best...

2011-02-21 17:39:00
New women?s world number one Yani Tseng is hoping that the HSBC Women?s Champions rule that its winners belong to the exclusive club of top-ranked players still applies when she gets to Singapore next week. Tim Maitland reports. The three champions of the tournament at Tanah Merah come from the elite group of six players to have been rated number one since the rankings were introduced in 2006: Ai Miyazato of Japan, Korea?s Jiyai Shin and Lorena Ochoa of Mexico. ?That sounds really good! Yeah! Thanks for reminding me of that!,? said the 22-year-old Taiwanese star Tseng, who won the Honda LPGA Thailand this weekend by five strokes extending her 2011 record to four wins in four events!  credit:Zimbio ?I?m really looking forward to this year. I know I have lots of confidence right now and I can?t wait to get to Singapore and see my old friends, to play that tournament and see all my HSBC friends over there. Now he’s healthy enough to play every day and manager Terry Francona thinks he could handle that role. There just isn’t an opening in Boston’s loaded lineup.
A Family Hopes to be United Before Christmas
2010-12-18 04:32:00
Sharon and Joe Vause arrived in Nepal soon after I did in August. They adopted Shekhar who is just a delightful, thoughtful little boy.  Joe had to return to the US to take care of their daughter and go back to work. They are desparately waiting to be reunited in the US so their family can finally be together. Here is their story...Ever since we adopted our daughter in 2005, Joe and I have wanted to have another child to share the love in our family. When we heard about the DOS announcement in August, Joe and I knew we were in for a difficult journey. Although Shekhar was only a passport photo to us he was already our...
RIM buys TAT – Hopes to Boost Sales via BlackBerry Makeover
2010-12-03 12:45:00
Another attempt, to enable the ‘Sexy’ BlackBerry makeover. And, this one seems a strategic one. There’s still hope for BlackBerry maker RIM after it was announced that a solution with GoI looks possible, in the near future. And, then happened, Nokia’s pressure exertion on BlackkBerry. Amidst all this, RIM quietly buys out the Design Team ~ The Astonishing Tribe, aka TAT. David Yach, CTO at RIM stated, “We are pleased to confirm plans for The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) team to join Research In Motion. We’re excited that the TAT team will be joining RIM and bringing their talent to the BlackBerry PlayBook and smartphone platforms“. TAT are globally known as a very radical bunch of interface designers who have the capability to make things look ‘Sexy’. TAT are based out of Sweden, with key focus on user interface design features. TAT refer to themselves as the “The Future of Screens”, by stating their USP as the people who eff...

Getting to know Utah, in the hopes that it may actually help Notre Dame win
2010-11-12 08:08:00
Considering that most weekends they're not televised coast-to-coast like some traditional Midwestern and Southern powers, one of the more incredible things about the triumphs of non-BCS schools such as Boise State, Utah, Hawaii, and TCU is not just that they have gained recognition as programs, but that their style of play has become so incredibly imprinted on the nation. Back in 2004, when their coach was Urban Meyer, Utah's spread option attack was considered revolutionary, but by last season had been adapted by 9 other teams, and contributed to the larger popularization of the spread to over 40% of the nation. Which brings us full circle to now, where in 2010, a behind the times Notre Dame team is clumsily trying to play catch-up.

White Sox playoff hopes are extra dead
2010-09-15 09:49:00
For the most part, I am a man of my word. And I said that the White Sox needed to sweep the Minnesota Twins in their final head to head series to have a sliver of a chance....and they screwed that up on the first friggin night. So yeah...7 games out...18 left....it is super, extra over. The White Sox will not overtake the Minnesota Twins for the the division title, and are much, much farther out from the Wild Card. To witness the death in person, it was simultaneously more rewarding and more painful. The White Sox showed their mettle in rallying from 2 runs down to take the lead, and displayed a double-play combo for the future in Beckham and Ramirez.
My Chicago half marathon hopes and fears

Fears:1/ Not feeling so prepared for this one.2/ Some of those around me are not feeling so great and I am forced to be within in a ten foot radius of them. Hopes:1/ That Kuma's Corner is all it's cracked up to be for my annual cheeseburger.2/ That there's not a long line at Sprinkles for my post-race cupcake.Today, I am grateful ~1/ For Purell and Zinc lozenges.  Please, G0ds of Wellness, shine down on me for at least the next 72 hours until I cross the finish line. 2/ That Kuma's Corner serves french fries.  I had heard a vicious rumor to the contrary.3/ That I've never heard any of these pickup lines during a race.  But, if I do,...
Carmelo and Denver heading for divorce? Don't get your hopes up
2010-08-17 01:34:00
Per ESPN's Ric Bucher:All signs continue to point toward the eventual divorce between Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets. League sources say it is now a matter of when, not if, Anthony and the Nuggets will go their separate ways.Anthony is weighing whether to sign a three-year, $65 million extension offered by the Nuggets. His dilemma, league sources say, is what affords him the best chance of continuing his career elsewhere. Anthony could sign with Denver and convince the team to then trade him. His other option would be to not sign the extension, thereby forcing the team to move him rather than risk losing him next summer as a free agent....

0-0 Draw Dents Manchester United?s Title Hopes
2010-04-11 17:38:00
The last 12 days would either make or break Man United?s season. A 2-1 loss and 3-2 win for United was enough to knock us out of the Champions League. After a 2-1 loss to Chelsea last weekend and a 0-0 draw against Blackburn Rovers today, it looks like it could have ended United?s fourth consecutive Premier League title hopes. With Wayne Rooney out injured after a reoccurrence of his ankle injury, Sir Alex Ferguson opted to put 18-year old Federico Macheda up front along with Dimitar Berbatov. Patrice Evra was rested; he had been replaced by John O?Shea, who had made his first appearance since November 2009 last Wednesday against Bayern Munich. Sir Alex may have gone for youth in the second leg against Bayern but Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs were brought back into the side to add some experience Throughout the game United had most of the possession but only really creating a few good goal scoring opportunities. The fulltime stats showed that United had 56% of the ...

Tate Hopes for a Golden Weekend
2010-02-26 05:00:00
Golden Tate has been playing wide receiver for three years and in that time has taken home the Belitnikoff Award as college football's most outstanding receiver. Although his lack of height that concerns scouts won't change between now and April's NFL Draft, Tate can make a big case to be a first round draft pick this weekend.
Golden Hopes for Chicago Area Native
2010-02-17 06:39:00
It was 20 minutes after eight pm at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver during the men's figure skating short program when Naperville native Evan Lysacek took the ice. Americans and the rest of the world had been waiting nearly three hours in anticipation. Evgeni Plushenko, the reigning 2006 Olympic gold medalist who came out of retirement in 2009, had posted the highest score of the evening at the beginning of the afternoon. None of the 17 skaters that took the ice after him had come close to the 90.85 score he had posted.Could Evan, the reigning world champion, be able to reach Plushenko's score?...
Google Hopes To Increase Orkut Usage With Orkut Extension for Chrome
2010-01-30 07:55:00
We all know that Facebook has already surpassed Orkut as the most visited social network website in India where Orkut used to be the most visited social network once! The war is still not over and Facebook now wants to leap frog Orkut. Well, not that Orkut kept quiet, they too have taken counter steps to check facebook’s growth but have not made much of a difference. And now Google is trying yet another strategy to give a jump to Orkut’s usage graph by launching a cool orkut extension for Google Chrome Browser (Download). This Orkut extension puts an orkut icon next to Google Chrome browser’s address bar which shows the number of new updates from your friends on Orkut (something Facebook already has had for long). On clicking the icon, you can see a drop-down menu with links to your friends’ profiles and other Orkut links. Some other features of this extension are: a “Share this page” link to help you share interesting content with your friend...

Go Green Appliance Rebate Program Hopes to Stimulate Economy in New Year
2010-01-04 19:28:00
I told my friend Steve Green of Go Green Management that there was a special government appliance rebate program coming...in his honor.  Naaah! But since there is SOME truth to this, I thought I'd at least mention this attempt to stimulate our economy once again, through the stimulus plan known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. With the new year, Illinois residential consumers may qualify for a new rebate program if they buy energy efficient appliances. This is a national program but each state has it's own rules and ways to administer the appliance rebate program.  There has been some buzz about this on our Facebook page, so I just had to drop some thoughts....
Mobile garden hopes to hit the rails next April
2009-10-20 13:00:00
Joe Baldwin is hoping to bring a native plant garden to the masses via a flatbed CTA car next spring.Baldwin is talking with the CTA about all the details. A CTA spokeswoman said there is no agreement yet, but the transit agency is putting together a cost estimate. The CTA still needs more technical information and whether it's even feasible. Some details can be found at the Mobile Garden site, including prototype photos like the one shown here. Good luck on this. Seems like a cool, but possibly expensive project....

Hopes for a nice place to get a cuppa joe at the rail station
2009-09-23 12:50:00
(Read the first two installments on the CTA's contract with Jones Lang LaSalle.) Toward the end of our visit, I asked both the CTA's Bill Trumbull and JLL's Sandra Greene about what successes they hoped to accomplish in the next year. Greene gave both a corporate and more human response:"We hope to make reasonable and realistic accomplishments in providing more revenue to the CTA." That's corporate speak, of course. "But I'd also like to be able to sit and have a cup of coffee with you right here," she added, gesturing to the empty storefront at Granville. Yep, that's appeals to the human side in all of us. Trumbull summed it up like this: "The stations are anchors for the...
Red Stars hopes of landing a spot in the playoffs fade
2009-07-21 20:40:00
The Red Stars played Sky Blue FC on Sunday and were missing several starters- Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe, Lindsay Tarpley and Karen Carney- all out due to national team call ups. Because of this, the Red Stars had an opportunity to start players who typically only see playing time for the last 10-20 minutes of the game.  Both, Danesha Adams and Ella Masar, started up top with Cristiane, while Lydia Vandenbergh started as an outside back on the defensive end.The Red Stars had several scoring opporutnities, including two rockets from Adams and a header from midfielder, Chioma Igwe, that went just wide of the goal.  In the end, the Stars were never able to capitalize on their scoring opporutnities, this...
Microsoft On A Lay Off Spree: Hopes Pinned On Windows 7 And Office 2010
2009-05-14 12:15:00
Microsoft Corporation is on lay off spree handling pink slips to 3000 people in May despite eliminating 1400 jobs in January this year. In January, Microsoft had disclosed plans to eliminate 5,000 positions, more than 5% of its global work force consisting 96,000 full-time workers it employed at the time and was also buoyed by the fact that its net income fell 11 per cent for the quarter ended December 31, 2008. Most of the job cuts were in U.S but it recently struck Indian soil when it decided to lay off 55 employees working in Indian operations. This severe action is being taken to cut costs in various business divisions to counter the turbulence faced by declining IT budgets at Top companies and even by SME’s . The scenario is worse even though global economy is on recovering path as it showed first ever drop in revenues to decline 6% in March quarter. The pressure on topline is due to the slackening vista sales as buyers ripple under the fear of Windows 7 launch coming as an ...

Manny's Suspension Boosts Giants' Hopes
2009-05-08 22:34:00
I can't deny that the Manny Ramirez 50-game suspension bodes well for the Giants. Ramirez was arguably the National League's most valuable player through the month of April and early May. However, it's certainly no ticket to the postseason for this team, and they shouldn't be treating it as such. Most of the Bay Area sports media beat the Ramirez story to a pulp on Thursday, but every single one of them were sending the same message; This now opens a door for the Giants in the division. I agree with this to an extent, but let's not forget, Ramirez is only going to be gone until July 3rd, so the Dodgers will have him back in plenty of time (3 months to be exact) to get back to where they are now. Also, the Dodgers were really taking off and kind of separating themselves from the rest of the National League, and they aren't sitting at 21-9 just because of the mercurial Ramirez. The team has talent up and down the roster. They still have Andre Eithier, Matt Kemp, Russel Martin, Ja...

I invited Sweetie to go see "Watchmen" this morning because I wanted to be romantic -- and while asking my wife to go see a movie based on a weird and overrated comic book may not seem romantic, it is, because I don't want to see the movie, she does. So I'm being romantic by caving in and taking her to see it. (She hasn't accepted yet; somehow, I thought that those tense moments where you wait to see if she'll go out with you would end when I got married.)Sweetie wants to see "Watchmen," I expect, because of all the hype -- ads are touting it, people are talking it up on the Internet, comic book geeks are marching across the country by candelight to pay homage to the visionary director who... blah blah blah.I hope it's good. I hope it lives up to all the hype. I won't know until I see it, because it hasn't been released yet and so the usual site where I go to find out about Movies and other pop culture things hasn't yet talked about it.I've learned that I can't trust ...
Hopes on Foreclosure Plan
2009-03-02 14:24:00
After the federal government took over the lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac last year, the two enacted a sweeping plan to stave off foreclosures which included setting up a moratorium on them till 2009 and finding out ways to cut payments. Despite all these efforts, many ended up back in front of James Frazier to be sold. And Frazier, the master commissioner of the Fayette Circuit Court, said suspects that stimulus package by President Barack Obama announced last week might have just the same results. Many large banks have committed to a moratorium on foreclosures until the plan can be enacted. James Frazier like many in Central Kentucky appreciated the president’s effort but is skeptical that the plan will do any better than those that preceded it. That notion has not been lost on homeowners in danger of being foreclosed upon. The day after Obama’s plan was unveiled, Community Ventures Corp., which provides assistance to distressed mortgage bearers, had receiv...
