Lexus brand to get at least two, not one, unique hybrids
2008-05-23 04:42:00 Lexus brand to get at least two, not one, unique hybrids Last month, news came of Toyota's Lexus brand getting a Prius-based hybrid vehicle when the next generation car breaks cover some time in 2010. Now, the latest reports have the automaker also mulling over at least one more hybrid vehicle that won?t look like anything else in the maker's current range, this one possibly a crossover. If true, Toyota would maintain its position as a pioneer in the hybrid vehicle industry. The Prius-based car would have unique styling inside and out, and be priced well north of its Toyota-badged donor, at above $30,000. It may also use lithium-ion batteries, unlike the current and probably next-generation Prius' nickel-metal hydride batteries, according to Inside Line, with the inline-four cylinder gasoline engines in either displacing 1.8 liters. The crossover could very well use the same powertrain, as all three cars are to be underpinned by Toyota's midsize MC platform,...

HOW HYPERMILING AND HYBRIDS SAVE MONEY
2008-05-17 01:26:00 Hypermiling is the new buzzword for folks who use some unusual driving techniques to maximize their miles per gallon. It has reached almost cult status among some groups of people. It is not new but the high cost of fuel has made hypermiling more popular. High mileage scores have become bragging points in some circles. The methods used range from the mild and safe to the wild and dangerous. Some methods that I recommend include coasting up to traffic lights. Driving the speed limit or slower, and shutting off the engine while standing still. Some folks are very competitive about this and set up a planned route that they and their friends drive on to see who can get the best mileage score. The best driver with a Hybrid car usually wins. Some special instruments are needed including a gauge that gives you real time miles per gallon and one that totals your miles and fuel use for a trip. See my post on the ScanGauge II for more on this. SAVE MONEY USING A SCANGAUGE I do NOT reco...

Hybrids Aren’t Cost Effective?
2008-05-14 13:32:00 With gasoline prices entering the $4 per gallon price point in Northwest Indiana with the alternative fuel E85 racing to catch up and keep within 10% or so of the regular unleaded price point, is it the time to run out and buy a hybrid car? With the higher cost for a hybrid, some suggest that they might not be an economical choice because it could take many years of driving the car before recapturing the high sticker price paid. Car buyers might be better off just buying a less expensive but high mileage gasoline vehicle. Video: Are Hybrids Cost Effective? The calculation that it will take 300 years to gain an advantage by driving a hybrid Lexus as compared to its regular gasoline model shows that hybrid technology and pricing at this time won’t make a difference. Wolf Hybrids & Cats
2008-05-04 16:25:00 Kayla is a such a sweet dog I often chuckle at how she came into my life, and about the wolf-hybrid horror stories that circulate. She’s a registered wolf hybrid from a breeder in Ocala, Florida. When she was abandoned in Whitehorse, I took her in with the understanding that it would be short-term until I could find a suitable home for a dog “known” to be unpredictable and potentially violent. That was in 2000. It quickly became apparent that she was nothing like the legends suggest she would be. The photo below shows her with Latimer yesterday afternoon - I never let Kayla have puppies, but Latimer happily accepts that role

British Airways orders up 100 Civic hybrids
2008-05-01 18:17:00 click to enlargeIKEA isn't the only one. One hundred Honda Civic hybrids will soon be added to the British Airways UK ground vehicle fleet. Honda announced today that it has completed a deal with BA for the hybrids, one of the largest hybrid fleet contracts in the UK and the cars will be delivered this summer. Honda's press release (available after the jump) says these hybrids will help each driver cut "CO2 emissions by one tonne per year." This number comes from the airline and Masterlease, which calculates the hybrids will reduce CO2 emissions from three tons a year to two compared to the unnamed vehicles they are replacing. The Civic hybrid is a good seller in the UK, and Honda's most recent numbers say that corporate sales are up 295 percent in 2008 vs. the same period in 2007. Thus far, Honda has sold 537 Civic hybrids - which get 61.4 mpg on the EU cycle and emit just 109 grams of CO2 per kilometer - in 2008. Hummers Have A Smaller Eco-Footprint Than Hybrids?
2008-04-22 02:15:00 A few years ago a report titled the 'Dust to Dust' report claimed that the total environmental footprint of a Hummer SUV was less than that of a Toyota Prius. If you want to read the entire 458 page report you can download the PDF here, but the synopsis of the report basically puts forth that once you take into the account the full costs associated with research, development, mining, operation and maintenance and finally the recycling of the hybrid car the total amount of energy consumed is greater than that of a Hummer over each vehicle's usable lifetime.Needless to say, the report was widely quoted in the media. However, a rebuttal has since been published by Dr. Peter Gleick of the Pacific Institute which points out some questionable methods. Two of the highlights in the Dust to Dust Report:A Hummer is expected to last 35 years, whereas a Prius is expected to last less than 12A Hummer is expected to run for almost 400,000 miles versus a Prius' 109,000 milesI only briefly skim...
Bentley wants to slash CO2 by two-thirds
2008-04-16 18:02:00 British racing green could take on a whole new meaning if Bentley is able to achieve its goal of reducing CO2 emissions by two-thirds to just 120 grams per kilometer by 2012. Nvidia CEO talks down CPU-GPU hybrids
2008-04-13 18:45:00 Yesterday at its Financial Analyst Day conference, officials from Nvidia talked for quite a while (about six hours) about the firm's position in the market. They addressed, at some length, how Nvidia plans to counter the AMD and Intel CPU-GPU hybrids and Intel's upcoming Larrabee graphics processor. Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang was quite vocal on those fronts, arguing hybrid chips that mix microprocessor and graphics processor cores will be no different from systems that include Intel or AMD integrated graphics today.According to Huang, development cycles for processors are longer, and customers will continue to find value in pairing integrated or discrete Nvidia graphics with a processor that already includes a graphics core. Besides, Huang believes Intel's promise of ten-times-greater integrated graphics performance by 2010 will yield hardware barely at the level of current mainstream Nvidia GPUs. Nvidia's vision is that consumers will need relatively powerful GPUs as raw process...

Hybrids (Still) Central to Lexus Strategy in Europe
2008-04-11 08:28:00 For whatever reason, Business Week has become particularly concerned with how Lexus is doing in other parts of the world. First there was an article a couple weeks ago about the company’s sales in Japan (which I partially refuted), and now a new story has sprung up about how hybrid technology may be the key to Lexus improving their status in Europe: Lexus sold only about 39,000 cars in Western and Eastern Europe in 2007, compared to 730,000 for the Mercedes brand and 700,000 for BMW. Already sales of Lexus’ three hybrid models?the GS 450h and LS 600h sedans, and the RX 400h sport-utility vehicle?accounted for 31% of total Lexus sales in Europe in 2007, up from 26% in 2006. Among Lexus SUVs it’s 85%. “Hybrid has been our breakthrough,” says Schlicht. The gasoline-electric powertrain helps address one of Lexus’ main problems in Europe. Because of the brand’s focus on the gasoline-oriented U.S. market, it has a much narrower range of diesel-pow...
Toyota: Plug-in hybrids can?t halve CO2
2008-04-09 20:05:00 How much CO2 do you think you would avoid emitting if you had a plug-in style hybrid? Considering my own current driving patterns, I'm pretty sure I could drop mine by 98% if I had a something like a Volt with a 40-mile all-electric range and I got those solar panels I've been craving. Now what if everybody in the U.S. had a Volt or a similar PHEV40? Taiyo Kawai (not pictured above), general manager of the fuel cell system engineering division of Toyota's fuel cell system development group was giving a keynote address last week at the NHA Annual Hydrogen Conference in Sacramento titled "Vehicle and Infrastructure" when he let this little "factoid" slip: according to Toyota, if we Americans were all driving 20 or 40 mile PHEVs, "it would only reduce energy consumption by 20 to 30 percent". It isn't stated in the article at Tech-On whether or not he proposed that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles could achieve that goal but considering his job title and who he was speaking to, I believe...

More recently some very large corporate entities have joined the chorus, Southern California Edison will be using Ford Escape vehicles and even PE&G will see power sold back from one Google test fleet vehicles. In contrast, the major automobile manufactures stumbled unintentionally into the spot light.

Chery gets approval from Chinese gov?t to start building hybrids this year
2008-04-08 04:21:00 Chery has apparently been given the go ahead from authorities in Beijing to start building a new homegrown hybrid car based on their compact A5 sedan. The A5 hybrid is expected to go into production late in 2008 at a price that should start somewhere around $18,500. That sticker would put it well under a Prius or Civic Hybrid which run about $35,000 or more. Other than a 1.3L engine nothing else is known about the Chery hybrid system. Chery will be providing fifty cars for the use of officials during this summer's Olympic games in Beijing, forty of which should be the new hybrids. [Source: China Car Times]

Toyota vs. Jim Press - Did Toyota get government help for hybrids?
2008-04-03 09:48:00 Click above for a high-resolution gallery of the 2007 Toyota Prius Touring."The Japanese government paid for 100% of the development of the battery and hybrid system that went into the Toyota Prius, " according to Jim Press. This quote was taken from an interview conducted by Business Week which also included Chrysler LLC CEO Robert Nardelli and vice chairman Tom Lasorda."I can say 100 percent that Toyota received absolutely no support - no money, no grants - from the Japanese government for the development of the Prius," answers Toyota's Tokyo-based spokesman Paul Nolasco. Irv Miller echoes this sentiment on Toyota's blog.Hmm... so Press, who worked for Toyota for 37 years, claims that Toyota received help from the government in Japan for the development of their hybrid drivetrain. Ford hybrids to turn a profit in 2008
2008-03-31 08:11:00 Filed under: Car Buying, Hybrids/Alternative, Sedans/Saloons, Green, Crossovers/CUVs, Ford, Mazda, Mercury Ford’s been cranking out hybrid CUVs on the CD2 platform for four years now, and with over 40,000 produced, it’s gotten to be old hat. Since it started in 2004, Ford’s managed to make the Escape, Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute 30-percent cheaper to build. That cost reduction, coupled with the pending introduction of the hybrid Fusion and Milan platform-mates, will allow Ford’s hybrid program to actually turn a profit for the first time in 2008. The Mariner and Escape hybrids find about 21,000 owners per year, and adding the hardware to the sedans could spur sales of Ford’s hybrid system, further reducing costs. We’re excited to try out the sedans with the hybrid system and the potential for a winner is there if Ford manages to deliver the goods at an attractive price. GM: by 2015, one-third of our US car sales will be hybrids, and the V-8 eng
2008-03-19 16:02:00 What will you be driving in 2015? If you only drive GM vehicles, there's a one in three chance it'll be a hybrid, according to a report from Bloomberg. GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said, "around 2015 we're going to have to sell a ton of hybrids whether people want them or not." Lutz added, "it's basically going to result in the quasi-disappearance of V-8 engines." Lutz explained that the increase in sales of hybrids will be due to the new CAFE standards signed into law late last year that require car companies to make cars that, on average, get 35 miles per gallon. GM is well on its way to a having third of its U.S. cars sales being hybrids, just recently introducing their second generation mild hybrid system and promising to introduce a hybrid car every three months for the next four years.[Source: Bloomberg via Detroit News]

Mayor of Seattle wants taxis to be hybrids
2008-03-13 16:38:00 Seattle is a city that seems to have it all. A great nightlife, lots of places to get coffee, amazing weather that Space Needle thing. What is doesn't have is a whole lot of hybrids in its taxi fleet. Sure, it has a few schlepping folks to and from Sea-Tac but that's about it. Mayor Greg Nickels wants to change that and he's proposing that the city help cabbies make the switch with "special cab financing," according to an article at the website of KOMO TV. So, are the taxi owners jumping for joy over this new scheme? Not exactly. Mangit Singh, a driver interviewed by KOMO, makes the case that it would be too expensive because of increased insurance expenses and the cost of buying new vehicles. He thinks they should get a "subsidized program". Perhaps Seattle's cabbies should call up their buddies at T.C. Transportation Services in Spokane (their taxi is pictured above) and ask how they managed to swing the hybrid ownership expense. Or perhaps increased gas taxes might help persu... |
