Transaction Ideas for Freebie-ful Walgreens Midweek Ad
2009-12-10 02:52:00 Crystal Paine just posted a couple of scenarios that could earn you $15 (not to mention net 9 free products) at Walgreens this week, based on the mid-week ad they released. They'll be doing that every week until Christmas, by the way. Here are my own deal ideas. Each transaction will be $25 before coupons, because Walgreens will give you a $5 Register Reward if you spend $25. The items I chose will mostly be going into stockings, except the Coke, of course, which is for holiday entertaining.

The AP writes: "Porn Star Tuesdays began accidentally in 2003 when a handful of entertainers, after a long day on the set, dropped by to unwind. They had so much fun they came back the next week and brought their friends. Six years later, they are still coming back, and attracting a following of fans that usually has the bar filled to capacity."So of COURSE RedEye had some fun...

CTA packs vision sessions with info, solicits ideas on future of Red, Purpl
2009-12-01 13:00:00 I admit, I was skeptical of the format for the "vision sessions" on the Red and Purple lines -- an open house rather than giving formal presentations. But it works. And I urge those of you who live north of the Addison and use the Red and/or Purple lines to attend the three other sessions scheduled for the rest of this week. Large presentation boards at session conveyed information about the history, status and challenges facing the two trains lines. The CTA used this same visioning process for the Green and Brown line rehabs. They expect this vision phase to take about six months, culminating with a report in spring 2010 based on community input....
Outbox: 4 Weekend Ideas for Chicagoans
2009-11-27 22:09:00 Boy oh boy, do I envy some of you right now. You're probably relaxing in front of the TV or shopping 'till you drop on Black Friday. (Okay, seriously, I don't envy the super shoppers. I call it Red Friday, and for good reason.) But since I am here at the Trib Tower working hard on RedEye stories and future Kyles Files material for you (Hint: Monday's track-off featuring three hot artists), I figured I might as well spend some time sharing some fun events and activities popping off this weekend. Save and review, for when you're done channel-surfing and shopping. Chi-town native Erica Watson's "Fat Bitch" show is leaving town after this weekend. Catch it if...

Kickstarter - A New Way To Fund Ideas and Endeavors
2009-11-12 14:00:00 There’s a common theme that seems to apply to more than one conversation we’re having around the office of late: community funded projects. You’ll be hearing quite a bit about this from us in the coming weeks.* Right now though, I thought I’d share a recent discovery, Kickstarter. I love the way they introduce themselves: We believe ...

The TEDIndia Experience – Ideas That Should Spread – Part &ndas
2009-11-09 06:19:00 By the 3rd day of TEDIndia I was convinced in my mind and my heart that I hadn’t experienced so many thoughts, ideas and emotions in such a short span of time ever before as the first and second day were fantastic. When I was invited to TEDIndia I had thought that I would just cover the Technology side of stuff that came up during the event but I soon realized that TEDIndia was not about a vertical, not about businesses or cultures or India alone but it was about life and its experiences. It was about the passion, perseverance and spirit of human kind and what it could achieve going forward. The last day at TED was one which started of with C.K.Prahalad sharing his thoughts on business and innovation. He stated that success is the first enemy of innovation as companies feel that they must be right and dont delve deeper to innovate or create something new. He also stated that size by no measure is a signal of a great company. He felt smaller companies could create the same prod...

The TEDIndia Experience – Ideas That Provoke – Part – 2
2009-11-09 05:26:00 We wrote about day 1 and TED and how it was a mixture of Hans Rosling’s brilliance with numbers and Pranav Mistry’s brilliance with technology. Day 2 was a different day though. I dont think anyone in the audience expected the day to be so intense but it surely was. Day 2 was kicked of by a session called Reinventing Development and there are three talks that I would like to point out. First one being that of Anil Gupta who runs the honey bee network which brings innovators from all parts of India together. He showcased 2 very interesting innovations among many. First one being a palm tree climbers created by a coconut seller and the second one was a bicycle with floaters which could be used both the road and on water. This was again created by a simple man who wanted to go across sea to meet a loved one. His talk was centered around how innovations aren’t limited to the west or to great scientists and how each and every simple person can also be innovative. My fav...

The TEDIndia Experience – Ideas That Transform – Part – I
2009-11-09 04:26:00 The last 3-4 days of mine have been spent in immersing myself into an experience called TED. As you may have noticed we had blogged about the fact that we would be at TED and shall be covering the same. So lots of people tweeted about TEDIndia and many blogged as well. The reason Ive waited till the event got over was because I didn’t want to blog about each talk individually but about TEDIndia as an event as a whole. In my last 3 years and more of blogging experience Ive attended over 50 events (atleast) and each of them have left me richer in knowledge or in insight. But none of them have ever moved me to tears or made me go in deep thought or made me proud to be Indian all in the matter of days. TED which stands of Technology, Entertainment and Design is far more than that. TEDIndia infact was more a reflection of what are the grave issues in India and the brilliance and the fallacy of India rather than being specific to Technology, Entertainment and Design. So here is my h...

Some Ideas for the Cubs
2009-11-05 07:32:00 The Cubs are starting to see the fruits of their labor to improve their farm system, as a handful of top flight prospects are nearly ready to play at the major league level. SS Starlin Castro is probably the closest position player to the big leagues, with 3B Josh Vitters not far behind, especially offensively. So with Castro on the fast track to the Cubs everyday lineup, incumbent shortstop Ryan Theriot will be moved to 2nd base when Castro arrives. If Castro is being penciled into the starting lineup for Opening Day 2011, or perhaps sooner, why not move Theriot to 2nd base now? Rather than have two middle infielders in new surroundings when the 2011 season begins, why not let...
T-Mobile service finally debuts in subway; winning ideas in Trib's CTA
2009-11-02 01:19:00 T-Mobile customers got service last Friday in the subways after waiting a couple of months since the August announcement by the CTA of a deal by the cellular carrier. The CTA will earn $3.1 AT&T customers with their iPhones have been waiting since June for service. I haven't heard that AT&T service is now available in the tunnels. If you're an AT&T customer, let me know if it is.Big ideas in Trib's CTA contest. Cheap Halloween Costume Shopping Ideas -- Even at the Last Minute
2009-10-29 03:56:00 Garage Sale Warrior has tips on where to look for a dirt-cheap secondhand costume, and I see no reason why these options shouldn't still work last-minute. Also, as I mentioned in my Wise Bread post "28 Ways to Have Cheap Halloween Fun," procrastination can be a virtue when it comes to Halloween because most of the stores now have deep discounts. All the Star Wars costumes at Target seem to be 50% off, for example.

2009-10-22 03:00:00 Well, you can at least win a T-shirt and get your idea printed if you enter the Tribune's contest on money-making ideas for the CTA.Read Melissa Harris' column for the details. I will also feature the winning ideas here....

So far there are well over 100 comments, and probably 200 ideas or more, since many folks had more than one idea.CTA management definitely reads this blog, and I intend to ask them about some of the suggestions. Many of you asked for more stations and station rehabs, and others want some stations closed. Others suggested bus-only lanes and better street-level signage. Jeanine thinks most public-facing employees need retraining on how to interact with customers.Goldminetim jumped into the fray a few times and challenged some of the ideas. Ideas for Blackhawks Promotional Nights
2009-08-13 04:16:00 Chicago Blackhawks team president John McDonough & Co. have had a rough summer in the public relations department. Will it curtail attendance this season at the United Center? Not a chance. Therefore, I suggest a few promotional ideas for the Hawks. Let's have some fun with it. Patrick Kane Half-Pint Mug Night The perfect size for the height challenged winger. It will be given away to the first 5,000 fans 20 years old and younger. The 8-ounce glass comes with Patrick Kane's mug shot on the side. A perfect reminder for the youngsters that nothing ever good happens at 5 o'clock in the morning. The sugar from too many downed juice boxes can make you do some crazy things....

NBC Too Dumb To Sell Smart Ideas?
2009-08-06 16:45:00 By: CT In the classic flick The Big Chill, Jeff Goldblum’s character, who labored for People magazine, worked under an edict to not write any article longer than the average American could read during the average crap. Apparenty, NBC is now going to be operating under orders to not try and sell the average American on anything that can’t be easily summed up in 30 seconds or less. So says, basically, Angela Bromstad, NBC’s president of primetime entertainment. Yesterday, she told the Television Critics of America that KINGS basically failed because it was “a little too high brow and too difficult to sell in a 30-second slot.” She went on to say “It doesn’t mean we’re not looking for big ideas. They have to be big ideas that the audience can grab on to.” For the record, let us fill Mr. Bromstad in on the real reason KINGS failed. While the big problem was marketing, it wasn’t the concept of the show or the inability of the audience to understand so big a con...

Garden Path Ideas
2009-07-27 08:10:00 The path in my small urban garden wasn't really planned, it grew out of necessity and convenience. Before I started my garden everyone in the family cut across our "lawn" from the front stairs to the gangway to reach the side and back of the house. Once I started putting in plants I noticed that everyone still walked through the yard the same way and this resulted in plants getting stepped on. When the rains came water puddled and eventually became mud which people stepped in and brought into the house. One day my father showed up with a bunch of large concrete pavers and I took a few to create stepping stones in the garden hoping that people...

'Food, Inc.' Will Freak You Out, Offer No New Ideas
2009-07-15 14:11:00 Photo credit: Magnolia Pictures Anyone familiar with Michael Pollan's books or the bare bones structure of our food and agricultural system will not be all that surprised by what the documentary "Food, Inc." has to say about the revolting, hyper-speed processes of the American nutritional system (or perhaps it should be called the "anti-nutritional system"). If you really don't know what I'm talking about, then you should probably go see this movie and realize that almost everything you put in your mouth is probably bad for you, the environment, and whoever grew or raised that food item. The thesis of "Food, Inc." is straight-forward: A handful of corporations now control the vast majority of our foodmaking capabilities. They mistreat...

10 ideas for home-based businesses
2009-07-07 01:44:00 When you think of ahome business, you probably think of providing daycare for children and babies, house cleaning and window washing, bookkeeping and tax preparation, and lawn care. Many people have typical businesses such as these, and they earn a decent living by doing them too. But if you're considering starting your own business, there are other ideas you can use to earn a decent living too. These are not your typical home businesses, so you'll have the advantage of being a "one of a kind" business that has little or no competition.A good place to start is to check around your city and determine what types of products or services are not provided, but are needed. Here are ten home-based business ideas to get you started:1. Construct Crossword Puzzles- If you enjoy working with words, then this might be the job for you. So much so that we kept expecting Linda Gray to walk into a scene! 2) HUMAN TARGET’S pilot revolves around our hero riding a high-speed train that left us jonesing for an episode of the wildly awful SUPERTRAIN. 3) DAY ONE might just as well be called JERICHO 2.0. In other words: Enjoy it while it lasts, kids. 4) Since PARENTHOOD is based on a movie, let’s give it a sequelesque title and call it PARENTHOOD: EIGHT IS ENOUGH. Because this sort of feels like what you’d get if we were catching up with the Bradford kids. 5) COUGAR TOWN will make anyone who loves DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES’ Susan very, very happy, ’cause it’s basically a sitcom with Courtney Cox playing Terri Hatcher’s role.

Simple Ideas ? key to creating winning PR campaigns ? thoughts from Cannes
2009-06-25 07:27:00 Ashwani has been reporting from Cannes and he has put up an interesting post on how to produce winning PR campaigns. What he said that I like the most was that any campaign has to be built around a central idea, an idea that is simple yet executed well. I also remember having a chat with Prema Sagar before she left for Cannes (she is the only Indian member to be part of the jury) that one of the core things that she look for will be a clear and simple idea and how that has been executed.
