Microsoft Ventures Into Indian Language Transliteration Tools
2009-11-26 12:20:00
Only 1.2 crore homes that have PCs versus 45 crore mobile phones in India – Microsoft seems to have a solution to that large difference. Lack of English language literacy prevents that difference to descend, which Microsoft India are looking to figure out. Recently in news, Microsoft Corporation announced release of transliteration tools for six Indian languages – Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada and Malayalam. At WATBlog, we covered Google’s invention of the all new Google Translate which is known for its instantaneous translation skils of 51 languages including Hindi. But their work on Indian languages wasn’t that great as expected. Google’s Text-to-Speech support for other scripts also being in the pipeline, Microsoft’s transliteration tool emerges for as a rescue for desktops. Necessity being the mother of invention, this new tool shall be available in both web and desktop versions. This tool will enable users to type a language in phonetic ...

Average Indian Spends Less Than 1 lakh A Year Via E-Commerce – Visa S
2009-11-26 08:40:00
In the first WATBlog panel discussion that we held in IIT last year a point was made about how the fortunes of online advertising in India is connected with the growth of ecommerce. The same point was reiterated again in the WATBlog panel at IIM Bangalore as well a few months ago. Now if we consider this a fair assumption then what Visa has found via its consumer survey study can be at best termed as disappointing when it comes to online ecommerce in India. Visa in its Consumer Monitor study for Q2 2009 have come up with the following findings: Confidence in ecommerce: One in three respondents polled reported that they were very confident when using their payment cards online. Driver of online shopping: “Freedom to shop anytime” is main driver for online shopping Top three reasons for shopping online: ‘the freedom to shop anytime’ (75 percent), ‘the ability to compare prices and save money’ (74 percent) and ’save time’ (74 percent). ...

Iraqi Government On YouTube – It’s 26/11, Where Is The Indian G
2009-11-26 08:07:00
After the American invasion of Iraq, there have been talks about the attacks on Baghdad being illegal. ‘The Independent’, UK revealed the discussion between the British and US officials two years before the invasion with an idea to remove their dictator. Then after Saddam Hussein was captured, the whole drama about his life sentence kept Iraq in the limelight for quite sometime. Here’s what they do from here. They choose the online medium to reach their people and others across the globe to make their point or rather “to present their message”. The Iraqi Government announced their presence online and using technology, their National Center for Information created a YouTube Channel for the Iraqi Government. This channel will be used as new and advanced mode of communication. The Iraqi Government will be hereby committed to this technology to connect with various International communities and those who follow the issues of Iraq. This being one of those d...

New Google Translate With Instant Results: Not That Great With Indian Langu
2009-11-18 08:01:00
After informing you about the grand announcements made by Google last week, here comes another product from the Google factory, only this time its an improvement over its previous edition. Google recently launched a new look Google Translate with a few additional features. But again I guess Google has still not been able to decipher the Indian Grammatical Code and hence even the new improvised version has not much of a support for Hindi to English translation or Vice-Versa. Google Translate is available in 51 languages which according to Google covers 98% of all internet users. This implies Google Translate can process 2550 permutations (each language being paired with each one of other 50 languages as Original and Translated). Though the program is great for individual short sentences or words, there is still a lot to be developed in order to have even 70% accurate (by accuracy I mean grammatical) text as compared to its original. Nonetheless, the program is more or less one of a ...

Basava Premanand Long Challenged Indian Governments To Come Clean On Sathya
2009-11-18 00:13:00
Among many attempts to awaken India to the great danger posed by chronic addiction to swamis, gurus and the like, the formost Indian rationalist B.Premanand tried to arouse government and public accountability. The odds he faced were utterly formidable. See my in memoriam tribute to Premanand, with whom I kept in touch over the years: Basava Premanand. Vale. A fighter for truth who lived what others preach One might have thought that the religious organizations, were they to have nothing to hide, would, in effect, have said something like this: Yes, we agree that horrible oppressions in the name of religion exist. We disagree with Premanand in regard to deism and disbelief. However, we are at one with him in wishing to stop exploitation, and we too will speak out very clearly, and do our best to ensure that you are not a voice crying in the wilderness.

SMS Based IM, Social networking – The Next Killer App For Indian Mobi
2009-11-13 11:56:00
Couple of years ago I stumbled on an idea of SMS based IM and social networking, though the idea gave me goose bumps with the extent of potential market, I was eventually convinced that mobile internet will be the thing, partly because I was already working on a mobile internet based idea and left only repenting now. Nokia Research and other’s (including a San Deigo based startup called ShorthandMobile) are reportedly working on text based IM and Social networking applications. This is a smart move on part of Nokia, because India which is the second largest market for the company has a great penetration of SMS services and SMS based IM/Social networking might just be the next killer application for this market. “We Meet”, the first product of this kind to be rolled out by Nokia reportedly could be used by families, groups of friends or small businesses. Users can create chat groups from their contact lists and communicate by sending text messages. The software &ld...

Indian Army Nails The Internet, While Websites Become Mandatory For Educati
2009-11-11 13:20:00
It all started with things appearing at lightning fast speed and then it helped rumors to broadcast from one end of the world to another. Now, advances in computer technology and the internet have changed the way people work, learn, and communicate.  The Internet has become an integral part of almost everyone’s economic, political, and social life. The Internet is just a world passing around notes in a classroom – Jon Stewart. For me soldiers always come first, so to start with the recent advancement in the cyberspace lets talk about where the Indian Army is headed. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) have recently launched a web portal for the Indian Army called indianarmy.nic.in. The main purpose to start this for various options like search, user interactivity, latest events, feedback, secured login, decentralized data update, space for all the arms/services of the Indian Army, etc. We get to know about the latest weapons with the Indian Army and their strengths a...

… And Thus Deflates The Great Indian Telecom Bubble!
2009-11-10 14:23:00
Two years ago, in 2007, I remember, it were the happier times of the Indian Telecom Industry. Everyone wanted to be a part of this. This sector rose as the flag bearer of the rising Indian economy which had so much in it. IT for the first time in years started taking a back seat. The whole sector offered opportunities like never before, and every ship was hoping to rise once it came in contact with this tide. This provided opportunities for the new comers, they saw this as the best time to dip their fingers. Everyone who got involved, or got entry, thought he had the license to become the next Sunil Bharti Mittal. Two years down the line, everyone is bleeding, and bleeding bad. The Incumbents, the newcomers, The incapable regulator, all having their own issues to resolve. The bubble is finally broken after the ruthless policies of the policy makers. And I’m sure, even as I’m writing, there’s something really worth noticing going on in this sector, to make headline...

ScamVille, Facebook And The Poor Little Indian Farmer
2009-11-10 06:42:00
(By Prateek Waghmare) Over the last 10 days the internet is abuzz with stories of Scam Ads found in popular games from companies like Zynga (Farmville ring a bell?) For those that are unaware of how such games are monetized. Users are allowed to spend real world money to buy in game currency to level up and have a better gaming experience that someone who wouldn’t. This is where Plan B for pulling in those dollars comes in. A little bit of genius and some knavery is responsible for an estimated 1/3rd of Zynga’s revenue through what are known as ‘lead gen scams.’ How these ‘scams’ work is deceptively simple. Using one of the oldest tricks in the book, a lie of omission. A user takes a simple quiz which promises them in game currency. After completion however, the user is asked for a valid cellular phone number and a PIN (which is texted to the given number). What the user does not know is that he/she may have been slapped a 10$ per month recurring subscription to ...

Indian Telecoms Expanding Fibre Optic Cable Network – Is The Competit
2009-10-26 10:54:00
Some of the major Indian Telecom companies are finally seeing some action on the expansion of their fibre optic cable network. Idea Cellular, Aircel and Powertel (The telecom focused BU of PoweGrid) have rolled out massive expansion plans. The currents stats of fibre optic network for these 3 are - S.no. Company Existing Network Proposed expansion to 1. Aditya Birla Group (Idea Cellular) 38,000kms 45,000kms 2. Aircel (Maxis) 10,000kms 25,000kms 3. Powergrid (Powertel) 20,000kms 31,000kms The companies hope that besides satisfying their own communication needs they would also be able to cater to overseas telecom operators such as British Telecom and SingTel who provide enterprise telephony services to corporate customers by offering connectivity between India and other countries through undersea cable networks. However the intercity network is dominated by the biggies such as BSNL, Reliance Communications, Bharti Airtel and PowerGrid. The foreign companies ha...

The Anatomy Of The Indian Online User – WATView
2009-10-21 06:32:00
As per TRAI, India has 8 Crore (80 Million) Online users who uses internet once per month which may be statistically correct but has some serious flaws in it (I will not go much into that though). For example, 1. How many of the “atleast once per month” crowd are browsing from Internet cafes ? it is very hard to judge as it can be anywhere between 25% to 50% 2. I don’t consider mobile net users as online users, they don’t click on ads intentionally and they don’t make purchases from mobile. Most of the mobile browsing is limited to information search or checking email and that too for very short time. From my experience and whatever I have seen on the Indian web space, we can break the Indian online users into 3 segments - 1. Premium Users – the top 1% (around 10 lakh living mostly in metros) who make online purchases from ebay.in, buy online tickets from OTA sites and reserve movie tickets online. They are the real thing and most of the VC funded online startups ar...

Google Chrome Targets Indian Users Via Facebook
2009-10-20 10:35:00
I have always believed the Google Chrome browser to be the future of Google’s web services package. The future of computing is not in the OS; rather it’s in the browser. And Google has been doing whatever it can to find a strong foothold for Chrome in the internet users around the world. This would mean targeting two different sets of people. Foremost, loyal IE/Firefox users who wouldn’t want to change their browser because the current one offers everything they want. Secondly, new users on the internet who don’t even know what a browser is. Google has already dabbled in print and TV ads for Google chrome. It has also successfully used YouTube video ads and Google Adwords. And now it looks as if it’s going into Facebook advertising. A lot of blogs have recently picked up the story and screenshots of these Facebook ads running for Indian users. You can check out a screenshot below: The ad claims that it is the fastest growing web browser in India. Though there have been no...

Cyber Crime Rising – Indian Companies Most Vulnerable
2009-09-23 11:28:00
It’s no news that Cyber Crime is on the rise in India. From privacy issues to identity theft, to insecure hack and phish attacks, the list is endless. Though cyber law is improving and steps are taken to stop it from proliferating, (check out our coverage of India’s first cyber court, and the awareness initiatives by the AP Government) the threat is quite huge. A recent newspaper article in the Hindu highlighted the seriousness of cyber crime. “Online crime is getting bigger by the day. Cyber criminals make more money than thieves and underworld dons,” says Websense Regional Director for India and SAARC, Mr Surendra Singh. He stated that 2009 alone saw in increase in the number of malicious Web sites by 233% (and that in the first half of the year). Overall, the increase in 671% over the last one year. Some theorize that the recession has had a major impact. With so many people desperate for jobs and quick earnings, the scope of luring them into cons becomes esaier....

Indian Kids Turn The iPhone Into A Joystick – Impress The Judges At T
2009-09-23 06:14:00
Being pretty young myself Ive been a firm believer that technology innovation is going to be driven by the youth in India. I have this statement that I make to VC’s often. I say the Mark Zuckerberg of India is 14 years old right now. What I mean is that he is right now playing with Xbox and fooling around with the iPhone and by the time he is 18 or 19 years old he would be kicking ass when it comes to building products on these platforms. Dont believe me? Check the video below: The video above shows a two people startup which applied to Techcrunch 50 and also won the best presentation award. Himanshu Baweja who earlier worked with minekey as a software engineer is a Delhi based boy. His company details can be found on their website. As the video above shows iMO has used software both on the iPhone and on the PC side to convert the iPhone into a joystick for PC games. This is just the start as the opportunity for this kind of application of touch devices is endless and they c...

Hills at Prestonwood and Indian Creek Real Estate Market Conditions
2009-09-19 18:28:00
Hills at Prestonwood - Indian Creek Real Estate Update These days you need to know the numbers before you buy or sell and it's good to take a look at the current trends by neighborhood.  You can see the Hills at Prestonwood and Indian Creek sales are better than the spring season 9 vs 11.  The median sales price has come down considerably due to the lower end market being much more active, under 500K due to scarcity of jumbo loan financing.  417K is the threshed before you jump into jumbo lending.  The sale to list price is 94.68% which indicates some properties might be priced too high in the beginning because sellers are making concessions.  As far as inventory goes almost 70% of the homes are selling within 90 days. You can bet the other 30% are high end properties over 600K. Pending properties has picked up (waiting to close).  If you have an opening price point home, chances are you have a great chance of selling it within 30 days and it looks li...

Daring Cooks: Indian Dosas (recipe)

Finally! I have completed (and posted) a Daring Cooks Challenge on time! I have been cooking along with this most recent adjunct to the Daring Bakers community but have always ended up missing the deadlines for one reason or another. No more! This time around the challenge was Indian Dosas. I’ve made dosas before but this was my first time doing so with gluten-free flour. Two suggested accompaniments were also given; a curried chickpea filling and a coconut curry gravy. I decided to use the recommended filling but broke away ... Indian Government Launches Website To File Copyrights Online
2009-09-12 08:10:00
Filing copyrights can be sometimes very cumbersome and a lot of the clichéd pillar-to-post running is required. The Indian Government has recently tried making the process a tad simpler by launching a new website for the Copyrights office. So, how does the new website make the job simpler? Traditionally, one must visit the Copyrights office to purchase Form-IV, as it is called and after filing the required details, one has to submit it with relevant documents at the Copyrights office and then wait for a mandatory minimum period of one month before the processes move to the next step. It becomes simpler now. With the new e-filing, you may do most of this online. People looking to file copyrights have to register online at the Government’s Copyrights Office website, fill in the details required on the online form and submit online. All relevant documents may be couriered. The fee that is paid can also be sent through DD/Cheque and you need upload the scanned copy for verifica...

Indian Government Sites Not Yet Fully Disabled-friendly – Now Who Wil
2009-09-11 09:43:00
The Indian Government passed the Disability Act in 1995, which among other things mandates that public information should also be provided in a disabled-friendly format to those Indian citizens who might have a need for it. With increasing proliferation of the Internet, electronic accessibility of information has become extremely crucial. In February this year, the government finally ensured that 50 of its websites shall be made disabled-friendly in order to make accessibility easy. The guidelines to ensure that a website is disabled-friendly is not a long list. Just a few important factors need to be ensured, like: Including the ‘ALT’ attribute for all images so that visitors who have problem viewing the image can easily listen to the ALT text using speech synthesizers Ability to know where the link is pointed at, without having to read the surrounding text Use of a consistent style to identify hyperlinks which is not solely based on color Use of frames to be avoided ...
