Indian Users Not Active Enough: Facebook’s Dilemma In India
2012-02-07 08:05:00
Though Facebook is gaining rapid entry into Indians’ lives, it daily usage is still in lowly numbers. As the IPO filling before the US Securities and Exchange Commission continues to be scrutinized, new information will continue to trickle down. We had recently reported how Facebook still considers the ageing Orkut to be its adversary. In Orkut’s case Facebook had validated it saying the locally active Social Networking sites were eating into its User base. Without these, Facebook would have garnered some more users. Whereas in this case, Facebook is worried that owing to the 2G scam & 3G fiasco, mobile internet is still not wide-spread as it should have been. The lack of easily accessible high speed internet has resulted in people being tethered to a Physical Desktop to access internet & eventually FaceBook. Thus, it may boast of high number of Monthly Active Users, but its Daily Active Users are very low. What’s the difference? Daily Active User or a DAU is...

Indian Telecom bodies slowly getting ready to auction 700 Mhz soon.
2012-02-06 14:19:00
After years of lamentable broadband speeds and assorted other challenges in setting up a data transmission infrastructure in India, relief may just be around the corner for us! The Government may soon initiate the process of auctioning the 700 Mhz spectrum band for broadband use. Yes, you heard that right! We may have 4G very soon (The auction may start by May or later, so it depends) The Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked various internal units like the Policy Group and the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) wing to help and evaluate the proposal for sale of the spectrum band. TRAI will also be involved as an advisory on the new policy and will recommend the auction parameters. DoT will also be looking at some additional spectrum which will be vacated by the Defence Department and Department of Space. Everything looks good to go except for a small problem. The Information & Broadcasting Ministry is opposed to this. They are saying that the band is currently required ...

Indian Shoppers Go Crazy Over Junglee.com: But Will The High Last?
2012-02-06 10:33:00
It is interesting to note that Junglee.com which marked the entry of Amazon in India, has been pulling in flocks on Indian shoppers. In fact it has accumulated one sixth of Flipkart users. The footprints of Indian shopper on Junglee.com is growing healthily and Alexa information analytics shows that there are nine pages per visit and users are staying on the site for approximately seven minutes. This is incredibly good as users on Ebay have a record of spending ten minutes or more. Mahesh Murthy, CEO and founder of Pinstorm says, “It’s very interesting to note how Amazon’s Junglee.com has been able to draw visitors to its site within a few days of launch and without spending any rupee on marketing or traffic building.” The best part of the story is that Junglee.com has users from Amazon and this has boosted the traffic figures by nearly 70%. Junglee.com plays a fair game and has molded itself into a marketplace for all e-commerce needs. It has alliances with on...

Indian Brands Cozy Up To Facebook For Air Time: Better Late Than Never?
2012-01-25 08:30:00
Indian Companies are catching up to their global brethren on Facebook, albeit in the form of promoted stories that appear in your timeline. These sponsored stories, though, have yet to be adopted widely in India since globally it is a grey area that is currently being frowned upon. However, companies who already have a Social Media presence are keenly interested to see who jumps the gun & promotes their brands & products on Facebook . Guess, being a copy-cat in the advertising world extends well beyond the traditional advertising media. Some of the early adopters like Jet Airways, have crossed the 30,000 Fans milestone on their Facebook page & are anxiously awaiting this added opportunity to further their brand as “Over 80 per cent of Jet Airways’ marketing spends are in the digital space and social media share is substantial,” revealed a company spokesperson. Incidentally, the airline is active on Twitter YouTube & others since 2010. However, merely g...

Europe Recession Helps Indian Tech Giants Grow: Good News For Us?
2012-01-23 11:30:00
The European Economic crisis is proving to be a boon for Indian Tech Giants who are reporting robust growth. Until recently, Europe was very stingy when handing their work offshore. However, the growing concern of a meltdown has forced the companies to revaluate their strategies concerning cost reduction through outsourcing. In 2011, top-tier Indian Companies posted a growth between 23% to 40% from their Europe focused operations. In the last quarter alone, Infosys reported a jump of 17% while TCS garnered 17% more revenue. The good news does not end there. The scope of work to come too has shot up with European companies signing more multi-million dollar contracts than the US for the first time. European operations usually account for about 25% or 1/4th of Indian IT Companies total revenues. However, UK is the sole country which hands over the lions-share. Rest untapped markets involve Spain, Italy and the Nordic regions. But things improved in 2011 when Infosys added 14 new clien...

2012-01-16 07:50:00
In a radical move aimed at farmers, the Indian Government will soon launch Speech-driven web service to address weather & farming related queries. Tech giant IBM, has been roped in by the Govt. to develop & deploy this first-of-its-kind interactive technology for farmers. In 2009 an SMS & IVR based system was launched to initially serve 5000 farmers & now currently caters to @ 2.8 Million. The SMSs are in regional languages, IVR provides verbal updates. However, these services are limited to just that, updates. The unique queries raised by farmers cannot be answered. Still, the ministry has records that show the short and timely alerts to farmers about the weather have led to economic benefits worth a whopping Rs.50,000 Crores annually! This could rise to 211,000 Crores if the entire farming community adopts the system judiciously. The project christened AgroMet (Agriculture Meteorological) service for farmers is a delayed-response model. That means, the questions a...

Otherwise, the age-old struggle with Karnataka for Cauvery waters would have started again.  None of these issues have easy answers or solutions.  Successful 'Past' Protests: Protests like Siliguri & Lokpal has given enormous confidence to other protesters that continuous & sustained protests by a minority will bring desired results in today's media covered India. Sony Forays Into Indian Tablet Space With S & P Wallet Shaped Tablets
2011-12-15 10:27:00
Tablets and their sales are generally an uncertain affair. People buy tablets and they are quite popular but they still lack wider adoption for the masses, but this is slowly changing. More and more players are getting into the tablet market and this competition might stir people’s interest in buying a tablet. There are already many tablets in the Indian market like the iPad 2, Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom and Acer Iconia. The Indian Government has also jumped onto the tablet bandwagon with their Aakash initiative. Sony has joined the fray with their release of their 2 tablets titled S and P (unique designs and run the Android 2.3 (Honeycomb) OS). With the release of Android 4.0 (ICS), Sony will have to update the OS soon other wise it will be in danger of being overlooked. The interesting factor about these tablets is that they are Playstation certified devices which means that you can play all the latest Playstation and PSP titles now also on the tablets. The National Electronics Policy 2011: Big Boost For Indian Mobile Devices M
2011-12-12 10:59:00
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology had opened a dialogue in October 2011 regarding the National Electronics Policy 2011. The suggestions provided by various stakeholders have been taken into consideration and changes have been incorporated in the policy with a view to improve it. The primary aim of this policy was to boost the revenue and share in the global market of products developed by Indian manufacturers. The policy not only plans to provide fiscal incentives to bridge the infrastructure gaps but also hopes to ease the pressure created on manufacturers by the high cost of finance. Experts have expressed certain concerns about the viability of the policy. There are concerns that some of the stipulations in the policy may not be in accordance with the Direct Taxes Code Bill, 2010 and the General Agreement on Tariff and Trade, which dictates India’s international commitments. I won’t get into the nitty-gritties of these concerns and rather concentrate ...

Amazon entering Indian Markets??
2011-11-30 16:34:00
It does not take much to guess that Amazon would soon enter into Indian e-commerce. But my prediction is that it might be sooner (soon as in middle of 2012) than later.  How I am making this guess? Because of the recent FREE Super Saver Delivery from www.amazon.co.uk. Though the super saver is currently applicable only to purchase more than 25 USD (Approximate Rs. 1250/-) and only books, music and DVDs are eligible, it surely shows the current interest from Amazon management team on India. The offer is available until January 15, 2012.

Are You Ready For Local Indian Language Domain Names?

India, being the 2nd largest pocket of people in the world has immense potential. While it already has one of the largest populations of netizens in the world, there is still a lot of scope for growth. One barrier to people using the internet has been their inability or discomfort with using the English Language. Yahoo already offers its content in 6 Local Indian Languages. A lot of Apps too have recognized the need to reach out to Vernacular users. According to the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), who recently held a workshop on IDNs or International Domain Names in an effort to spread awareness, Internet Domain Names may soon be in Indian Languages. The Indian Government and the ICANN have both taken it upon themselves to push for local language domain names on the worldwide web. They are the biggest professional network in the world with some 135 million members worldwide and they recently opened a R&D section in Bangalore. They have done a survey of 12000 professionals worldwide and arrived at a conclusion that 63 % of the people are very satisfied with their current jobs. This unpredictability is making people find solace in the fact that they have job in the first place. That is simple psychology. Nicole Williams, LinkedIn’s Connection Director concurs with me on this point. She says, “A tough economy can make professionals appreciate facets of their job they might otherwise overlook when business is booming”. Professionals are currently being optimistic about the fact that if they work hard enough they will become invaluable assets to the company. Some 67% of Indian ...
