Microsoft Wants To Incubate Indian Startups Who Want To Use Its Azure Platf
2012-05-23 14:30:00
Microsoft will soon open a parallel incubator program in India. The first one was in Israel. This is how the Israeli Incubator looks, courtesy: TheNextWeb Why? Microsoft’s cloud computing program Azure, needs startups that are focused on working with cloud computing. Hence Microsoft is willing to offer office space, mentorship, and $60,000 in credits to use Microsoft’s Azure platform. Attempts to set a firm foot in the cloud computing space were amply evident when Microsoft bagged its biggest Indian project from AICTE. Soon, even schools from Mumbai & Delhi were found to avail the services & that too at no extra cost! This commitment seems to have been extended in order to compete with the growing clout of Google & imminent threat from Amazon too! While Amazon has started to offer its super-computing for people who are willing to pay, Microsoft seems to have taken the higher ground in offering nurturing environment for fledgling startups. However, it will only extend...

High End Tablets Rule Indian Markets, No Place For Ultra-Affordable?
2012-05-21 13:57:00
Despite companies continually launching low priced tablets, it’s the high-end ones that are ruling the roost. Indian consumers have demonstrated their hunger for performance oriented & premium priced tablets with Apple’s iPad gaining a very healthy 51% market share last year. The latest iPad launched recently may show a healthy adoption rate too. After defeating its close rival Nokia, Samsung has proven itself in the tablet market with 24% via its Galaxy line of tablets. A recent survey by an US Based ABI Research brought forward such interesting insights in the hereto niche market. Will the ultra-affordable stand a chance? India as a market for tablets is yet to take off. Last year, only 0.39 Million Tablets were shipped in India as compared to 65 Million shipped globally. Experts estimate the market to grow 71% annually & by 2017, around 10 Million tablets could be sold here. Hence, it is too early to relegate the low-cost tablets to the history books. While the high...

Unfortunately, what his cabinet did not have is one Dorothy. And that happened to be the root of all economic ...

We all know how Internet Connectivity in India is abysmal in comparison to other countries like South Korea, Japan and the USA. A recent study by Akamai Technologies, the world’s biggest content delivery platform, has shown just how bad the state of Internet connectivity is in India. Akamai was able to get the data for these studies through its Akamai Intelligent Platform for the State of the Internet report for Q4 2011. The report goes into details about tracking, mobile connectivity, broadband speeds and proportional Internet users. According to the report, India have an average connection speed of 0.9 mbps! Besides being a very low figure, it also puts our country in the league of countries like Egypt and Venezuela. The report goes into further detail with analysis on data downloaded per user and peak connection stats. The attack traffic recorded in India for the fourth quarter was around 3%, which was surprisingly lower than the previous quarter’s result (3.7%). The averag...

Trains To Get High Speed Internet Via Satellites, Courtesy Indian Space Res
2012-05-02 08:40:00
It is newly reported that  Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has allowed  the use of satellites to beam high speed internet directly onto moving trains. According to the news, Indian Railways will use the KU Band to make availability of broadband speed in trains like the Rajdhani. Exactly a year ago, the Railways had finally received the financial backing of Rs. 6.3 Crores (US$ 1.2 Million) to introduce WiFi Connectivity on trains. How will the system work? As this is a pilot project only 3 coaches of the Howrah Rajdhani will have such connectivity. This will establish a direct link up with the satellite. Once the link is good, the coaches will have internet connectivity through WiFi. Interestingly, passengers are not being charged for this service, yet. Railway stations are already being connected to such services.  A while ago, they had initiated a project to link their trains with GPS for accurate position information. Indian railways are by far the most ...

ESPN Digital Caters To Indian Football Fans With A New Online Platform
2012-04-30 14:23:00
ESPN Digital has introduced ESPN Football Club (ESPNFC) to Indian Football fans. This football centric application should be available across mobile platforms & is being developed to push targeted advertisement by offering quality content to the masses. Why the sudden development of interest? ESPN already owns & operates a cricket centric website cricinfo.com. This website has already witnessed record number of visitors during peak game season. It seems only logical that another game that has captured the hearts of Indians be exploited for commercial gains. ESPNFC will have geo-location enabled smart engine that will bundle advertisement & serve it by sensing the location of the user. How is a geo-location enabled recommendation engine going to work with a football app is best left to the designers. Garnering quality content is now the simple mantra that companies have adopted in order to make money from advertisement. The mobile centric application will be vital in acc...

Starting At Rs. 30,500 Apple’s New iPad Hits Indian Market
2012-04-30 07:41:00
A whole month after the international release Apple has finally allowed Indians to purchase their latest iPad. Though it’s a third generation iPad, Apple has refrained from calling it iPad 3. However, specifications wise, there has been significant upgradation. What does the new iPad have? Any tablet’s most important aspect is its screen. Apple simply leaves other tablet makers far behind with 2048×1536 resolution Retina Display. The screen size is same as before i.e. 9.7 inch but it has 44% more color saturation. At 3.1 Million pixels, it’s 4X the amount as compared to older iPad2. Under the hood is Apple’s proprietary A5 Quad-Core chip, which is supposed to have market-leading processing capabilities. Furthermore the older version had just 3G, the newer has the faster 4G module built into it. However, no Indian mobile telecom operator has so far endorsed the faster standard of internet built into the iPad. Hence it will wise to wait till some Telco confirms that the...

We Reviewed Zync Z-990 – The First Indian Tablet To Have Android 4.0
2012-04-26 08:23:00
Sometime back, Apple Group of Companies (no relation to Apple!) launched the Zync Z-990. This is the first Indian tablet to have Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich and made quite a splash when it was launched. We managed to get our hands on the Zync Z-990 and here is what we found. Design and Looks This 7 inch tablet is compact and very easy to hold. We loved how it was light in comparison to other tablets out there. The downside is that the make of the tablet is very poor. It is cheap and plasticky and doesn’t feel like a polished product. The design is simple and it looks like the company did not put enough thought to it since there is considerable room for improvement in terms of finish of the product. Product Specs: The tablet sports a resolution of 800*480 pixels, which is not very good for content display. We ran quite a few apps and it was our opinion that we could not read stuff on it very clearly. It does have a capacitive touch-screen and that is the good thing. Th...

Walmart To Hire 100 More Indian Developers: What Is Walmart Upto?

Walmart Stores has chosen Indian developers to work on its retailing technologies. The physical & online store giant has hired 20 Indian developers over the last few months & plans to have about 100 within few days. The company has set a target of 200 People by the end of the current year. Walmart appears to be gearing up for the onslaught of Amazon. The web-only company has been steadily eating into Walmart’s customer & revenue base. Hence the company has set-up @WalmartLabs, a unit of Walmart Global e-commerce. This project is the company’s hub for creating platforms and products around Social and Mobile Commerce. Walmart has realized the challenges that need to be overcome if it needs to maintain its position in the world which is increasingly reliant on online shopping. However, the company does have a very strong asset of physical stores where customers can get a feel of the product. In order to bolster the offline-online linkages, Walmart is hirin...

Revolution By The Indian Music Industry Reap Results As Banned Websites Beg
2012-04-17 09:30:00
The Indian Music Industry (IMI) association has been working hard to curb piracy. It’s efforts have slowly started to bear fruit with banned website like www.smashits.com buying- a license to legally sell music. The website, which was earlier part of the large list of websites that were banned, has chosen to take the legal route of music distribution  & has accordingly bought a license from IMI. Though the amount paid for license is not disclosed, it is said to vary depending on the quantum of downloads and streams of music. A while ago IMI had drawn out big guns in order to secure injunction orders against 104 websites that were directly responsible to distribute Indian Music without paying any royalty to the makers. This entitled an estimated annual loss of about US$ 4 Billion. Though the organization was successful in getting Songs.pk banned, the site owners simply chose to open a new portal named SongsPk.pk & continued pirating music. And this is the majo...

Walmart Eyes Indian Online Retail: Fact Or Fiction?
2012-04-12 08:00:00
American retail giant Walmart appears to be eyeing the lucrative online retail in India. Though the news could not be corroborated, the company was apparently in talks with e-commerce companies in India for partnership possibilities. However, upon confrontation Walmart reverted that information was “completely speculative”. Why is Walmart keen in a partnership? With a global revenue of US$ 400 Billion, one would think Walmart could easily open a chain of stores just like in the US. However, our Indian foreign investment restrictions in domestic trading are applicable to e-commerce, too. Accordingly, such companies can only conduct Business to Business (B2B) e-commerce and no direct retail trading is permitted. In case Walmart opens a physical store it does get a 100% trading permit but for wholesale B2B. Additionally Walmart does not do single-brand trading which too has 100% investment permission. The Union cabinet had cleared FDI in multi-brand retail in 2011 but then withd...

Indian Art And Culture Will Go Online: Google Partners With National Museum
2012-04-11 13:59:00
Google has agreed in a partnership with the National Museum and National Gallery of Modern Art under the Ministry of Culture to shape and extend its new Art Project in India. Google wants to design an online podium for museums across the world to exhibit their art works and allow art lovers to explore more from the art archives of India as well as other international artists. Just imagine how lovely it would be to visually see a gigapixel image of the Radha and Krishna in the “boat of love” from the National Museum and “Santiniketan Triptych”. The intriguing part is the super high resolutions revealed in these art works which is otherwise not conjectured by the naked eye. Art loving users can also use the Google Street View technology to surf through the galleries and add them to their very own online collection. This idea was sown in the presence of Smt. Kumari Selja, Hon’ble Minister of Culture and Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Dr. Vijay Madan...

Indian Music Industry Wins Battle Against Music Piracy: But Will It Win The
2012-04-11 12:21:00
Music Piracy took a beating today when the Indian Government issues a mandate that asks all ISPs to ‘protect and preserve’ copyright ownership of music artists and companies over the Internet. We had reported earlier that the Calcutta High Court had made it mandatory for 384 ISPs to block around 104 offending websites and services, especially Songs.pk. This was finally achieved by extensive lobbying by the Indian Music Industry (IMI) which is a group of all the major players in Indian Music. Some of the prominent ISPs who were named were Bharti Airtel Ltd., Vodafone India Ltd., Hughes Communications India Ltd., Tata Teleservices Ltd., Reliance Communications Infrastructure Ltd., Wipro Ltd., Sify Technologies Ltd. and others. Vijay Lazarus, IMI, said in a statement, ” Recent estimates suggest that India’s digital music market is in the range of Rs. 5,000 crore, but only 7 percent of it is legitimate. We hope that such a move will help curb piracy and go a long way in sup...

The survey reports that an average Indian spends roughly 9.7 hours a week on multiple social networking services like Facebook and Twitter and other applications that enable chatting with friends. Email on the other hand are showing a usage statistic of 6.1 hours a week. 8 out of 10 people quizzed by the survey claimed that they cannot live without the Internet for more than 24 hours. We can vouch for this statistic because now that more and more people are smartphones or Internet enabled feature phone, the web has become some sort of a life-line to the world in general and the withdrawal effects can be severe. Overall, Indians spend 8.4 hours a day or up to 58 hours a week online. A proper breakdown of the hours spe...

Indian Railways To Launch GPS Train Location Tracking Service
2012-03-28 08:38:00
Indian Railways is looking at launching a service which will help passengers track its trains in real-time using Google Maps, a functionality very similar to GPS navigation. This will make it easy for travelers to access and track track their trains from their computers and mobile devices. Economic Times reports that the Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has partnered with the prestigious Indian Space Research Organization to develop a GPS-based solution. This technology can provide the location of a train accurately down to 10 meters and at a maximum time latency of 2 minutes which makes it almost real-time by practical standards. Besides helping travelers, this new GPS device is mainly being installed to avert collision between trains and prevent any loss of life. CRIS has integrated this GPS device in Google Maps and ISRO’s INSAT-3C will help in tracking the trains. This project is large scale and hence CRIS plans to allocate Rs. 70 crore to the project. A pilot pr...
