Exploitation & abuse of Indonesian women domestic workers
2008-12-10 02:01:00
We all know that poverty are the basic problem that leads to bigger problems, a social problem. Poor people are trying hard to survive by doing anything they can think of. As Indonesia has been one of "third countries" that facing these problems, many Indonesian women had also face to reality to work as domestic workers for more family income. But not all of them are lucky enough to get descent job. Indonesian women domestic workers, either who work as a migrant or local employment are often become the victim of human rights abuses. Although, Indonesian government have set legal remedies to protect them, but the violence has been happening still and the effect is remotely limited. In many cases, several of them are reported dead by serious violence, received beatings, tortured everyday in several years and because they choose to die or try to run by jumping from the top of building. They are forced to work beyond the limit only for $100 salary per month, and sometimes without pay fo...

Indonesian central bank may suffer 8.02 trillion rupiah deficit
2008-06-10 09:35:00
The Indonesian central bank may suffer this year a much bigger deficit than last year due to a costly interest payout to holders of its key certificates, local press said Tuesday. Bank Indonesia, the central bank, is expected to suffer a total deficit of 8.02 trillion rupiah (about 861 million U.S. dollars) by the end of 2008, as it has to pay the interest of its certificates. Last year, the bank suffered a deficit of 1.4 trillion rupiah (150 million dollars), reported major newspaper The Jakarta Post, citing central bank chief Boediono. The bank announced that foreign exchange reserves in the first quarter of this year stood at 59 billion dollars due to a rise in exports, but the figure fell to 57.46 billion in May.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
Indonesian Muslims rally to demand ban on 'deviant' sect
2008-06-09 12:10:00
Thousands of white-clad Muslims have taken to the streets of the Indonesian capital to demand the government ban a minority Islamic sect branded "deviant" by top clerics.Around 5,000 protesters wearing white skullcaps and Islamic headscarves blocked the street in front of Jakarta's presidential palace to demand the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ban the Ahmadiyah sect.Protesters held up posters bearing pictures of Rizieq Shihab, who was arrested last week after members of his radical Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) attacked religious freedom activists not far from the palace, injuring 19.The protesters marched five kilometres to the police headquarters to demand Shihab and seven other FPI members be released.Calls to ban Ahmadiyah have been mounting in Indonesia after a government board recommended in April the sect be disbanded over its "deviant" beliefs.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Indonesian couples told to plant trees before marrying
2008-06-04 14:00:00
PROSPECTIVE newlyweds in an Indonesian province are being given one more promise to honour: planting trees to help slow the rapid deterioration of the country's forests. As Indonesia marks World Environment Day on Thursday, husbands- and brides-to-be in Gorontalo, a rugged mountainous province on Sulawesi island, are being required to plant 10 seedlings supplied by the local government, said Mr Hasyim Alidrus, head of the religious affairs office. It is part of a nationwide 're-greening' initiative launched by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Bali Conference in Bali last November when million of trees were planted across the vast archipelago. The program, critics say, is largely symbolic in a nation that is losing its forests at one of the fastest rates in the world due to illegal logging, mining, new oil palm plantations and slash-and-burn land clearing. Indonesian govt under strong pressure to act against extremists
2008-06-03 09:59:00
The Indonesian government is under strong pressure to act against Islamist extremists after fanatics threatened war against a minority sect and attacked a rally for religious tolerance.Police have failed to make a single arrest following Sunday's violence, when hundreds of stick-wielding Islamists stormed the peaceful rally in central Jakarta and severely beat dozens of people.Victims of the unprovoked attack joined with rights activists and the media on Tuesday in condemning the government for allowing a tiny minority of extremists to threaten basic rights in the world's most populous Muslim state. The US embassy also urged the government to "continue to uphold freedom of religion for all its citizens as enshrined in the Indonesian constitution"."This type of violent behaviour has serious repercussions for freedom of religion and association in Indonesia, and raises security concerns," the embassy said in a statement.A little-known extremist group affiliated to the hardline Islami...

"It's getting back out that we're concerned about."Indonesia, which is home to the largest Muslim population in the world, has no official ties with Israel, and contact between the two countries, while not completely unheard of, is certainly rare. But that didn't stop Yifrach and MDA coordinator to the Red Cross and Red Crescent David Abadi from traveling to the country's capital, Jakarta, last month to finalize plans for 23 Indonesian doctors to take part in a two-week-long seminar in Israel on the "management of multi-casualty incidents" - something for which the two countries sadly share a need."It's easier to order a pizza in Indonesia than an ambulance," Prof. Aryono D. Indonesian energy minister can't rule out more fuel price increases
2008-06-02 09:09:00
Indonesia cannot rule out further increases in fuel prices before the 2009 presidential elections, Energy Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said on Sunday, because of the impact of fuel subsidies on the budget. The government raised fuel prices by almost 30 percent last month, sparking protests in a country where millions are already suffering from rising energy and food costs. While Indonesia still has some of the lowest fuel prices in Asia, the issue of fuel subsidies is politically sensitive given Indonesia is due to hold parliamentary and presidential elections next year."The increase is about fairness. Subsidized fuels have been enjoyed by the haves," rather than the have-nots, Yusgiantoro said on the sidelines of the Coaltrans Asia Conference on the resort island of Bali.Asked whether the government could guarantee there would be no more increases in fuel prices before the next presidential election due by mid-2009, Yusgiantoro said that was not possible."We cannot guarantee, we neve...

Indonesian economy more resilient than expected, says IMF
2008-05-26 09:07:00
The International Monetary Fund says Indonesia's economy has performed above expectations in weathering pressure from soaring global oil prices and a weakening U.S. economy. The government held an annual consultation meeting with IMF lead economist Milan Brahmbhatt and country director Stephen Schwartz in Jakarta on Friday, to discuss recent developments with the country's economy and future challenges."The IMF was a bit surprised by the fact that Indonesia was able to secure 6.3 percent year-on-year growth in March, higher than its estimate of 6.1 percent," Syahrial Loetan, secretary to the state minister for national development planning, said Sunday.Citing the IMF's assessment of the economy, Syahrial said the country's economy would continue to benefit from soaring commodity prices and that macroeconomic fundamentals would remain healthy as long as the government maintained fiscal sustainability."They said the decision to raise fuel prices was a bold move, considering its sen...
Indonesian president defends fuel price hike
2008-05-26 09:06:00
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday defended his unpopular fuel price hike as necessary to avoid an economic meltdown similar to the 1997 financial crisis.Yudhoyono told a forum of regional investors the government had to act to save the budget from collapsing under the weight of runaway subsidy bills linked to soaring global oil prices."The decision on Friday to further reduce oil subsidies was the best, necessary and most responsible solution to save our national economy from crumbling and protect our people from harm," he said."The alternative would be a possible financial and economic crash similar to that of 1997 and the real loser here would be our own people."Analysts applauded the price rise, saying it was vital to prevent a deficit blowout and demonstrated the government's fiscal responsibility despite the threat of protests leading up to general elections in April.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
