OHSU researchers detect brain injury in preterm infants using high-field 12
2011-12-18 17:19:00
Will 1.5 T become the new Low field MRI? These new Ultra High field systems continue to amaze me. I saw this 12T system a few years ago being installed and really was amazed at how far we have come. The 7T scanner is actually more impressive because it is closer to being a production model. I can see it on the shelves in the next couple years. There will be a demand. I wouldn’t too be surprised to see it combined with a PET scanner. WOW!! that is where we are headed folks………Bi-ograph 7T     High-field MRI reveals previously undetectable injuries in developing brain       Brain scans using the high-field (12-Tesla) MRI on the right are more effective at finding brain injuries, but they are not widely available for clinical use.   High-field MRI at 12 Tesla (12T) is markedly more sensitive in detecting early white-matter injury — broad dark black area (arrow) — than is lower field MRI at 3 Tesla (3T) (credit: ...

Was Soldier Field's surface to blame for Cutler's injury?
2011-11-21 15:11:00
What would’ve happened if Johnny Knox didn’t slip on that slant route? Does Jay Cutler still throw an interception? Probably not. Phil Simms pointed out that Knox was leaning which could have caused him to lose his footing. I’m not a wide receivers coach so I’m not going to dissect Knox’s technique. Did Knox slip... Read more »

Danks injury leads to bizarrely excellent relief...almost makes me forget a
2011-06-26 05:31:00
Thanks to the 6-man rotation, Jake Peavy was able to step in Saturday at a moment of need for the bullpen, and toss 4 excellent shutout innings (7 Ks!) while earning the win in a 3-0 White Sox triumph over the Nationals. Hooraaay! Unfortunately, the reason Peavy was in the game was because John Danks strained his oblique, thus rendering the 6-man rotation dead. Whoops. Part of the reason for the 6-man was to guard against injury...but that was supposed to be Peavy's injury. Now the White Sox are in the position to have to trust Jake Peavy to pitch every fifth day. This isn't an absurd concept, and is something people use to do all the time with great success. But it's more precarious than the beginning of the season when the fifth guy holding the staff together was Philip Humber. Jake Peavy is less reliable than Philip Humber. Welcome to 2011.

5 years ago, I was training for IM Madison, while riding my bike, I managed to crack my knee cap, tear a tendon and the cartilage in my knee tore to the point where it looked like Frosted Flakes, it wasn't good.My leg was such a mess, I had to have a specific surgery called microfracture.  This is where I met Dr. Brian Cole from Midwest Orthopedics at Rush.  Not only is Cole the surgeon for the Bulls and the White Sox, he is one of the foremost experts in micro fracture type surgery. The details of microfracture are many, but in a nut shell, they harvested my remaining cartilage and sent it off to a lab to grow me new...

Peavy's injury diagnosis is apparently the best-case scenario
2011-04-20 09:49:00
Perhaps the White Sox offense is a dead alligator felled by a fanboat in a shallow swamp in the Everglades at the moment. Still, there's a positive side to everything; the bullen has stayed out of the press (did you SEE Jesse Crain's 8th? BOSS!), Ramon Castro threw a basestealer out on Monday, and that alligator--while dead--is still in Florida. Keeping up with the theme of finding the silver lining in the knife portruding from your arm, the initially dire opening reports from Jake Peavy's outing Monday night (Only 15 pitches--shellacked by AA-hitters--left mound in discomfort--might have to move back in with parents), seem to not be as disastrous and harmful to the most helium-filled, pie-in-the-sky projections for the White Sox (read: mine) as initially thought.

Chicago Bulls forward Carlos Boozer sprained his left ankle yesterday (Saturday, January 15) in the fourth quarter against the Miami Heat.  Boozer did not travel with the team to Memphis and is listed as out for tomorrow's game. The Chicago Bears: Injury Free and Defying the Odds
2010-11-13 17:13:00
The Chicago Bears are 5-3 midway through the season. And boy has it been a long one. While the Bears' defense has played excellent football, the offense hasn't done them any favors by being one of the worst teams in the NFL in time-of-possession. Typically, any veteran defense who must consistently play extra minutes will begin to break down as the season progresses. And maybe we just haven't seen that yet. But, despite what happens moving forward, the Bears, right now, are one of the healthiest teams in the NFL. The Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs are the only two teams in the NFL with four players or less listed on their injury report, who also have zero...
Injury And Illness Struck Man United Take On Man City Tonight
2010-11-10 08:00:00
This evening there is a very important derby match between Manchester City and Manchester United at the City of Manchester Stadium. City have lost four out of five of their last games in all competitions, United have won five out of their last five. Form won?t matter; games between the two teams are unpredictable and nerve-racking. Sir Alex Ferguson celebrated his 24th anniversary as Manchester United manager at the weekend. Manchester City have had 14 permanent managers at Man City since Sir Alex was appointed on the 6th November 1986. None of them have been as successful with the City failing to win a trophy in 34 years. The clubs played each other four times last season, twice in the league and twice in the League Cup semi-finals. In three of those games Man United scored three very late goals, which insured United took all six points in the league and a late Wayne Rooney goal made sure that United would be in the Carling Cup final, which United went on to win. Manchester Un...
Is Dave Bolland the Latest Injury Concern for the Struggling Blackhawks?
2010-10-30 17:03:00
Lost in the hot pile of garbage that was presented to the viewing audience at the United Center and through the television screen on Friday night was a greater concern than getting blown out by a mediocre Edmonton Oilers team for the Chicago Blackhawks. Just a couple days after losing Marian Hossa for a couple weeks, the Blackhawks may be searching for a center to replace Dave Bolland as well....

Bulls looking into Boozer injury?
2010-10-10 14:42:00
Per the NY Daily News:The Bulls are looking into whether Boozer really suffered the injury to his shooting hand - as he said he did - after tripping over a bag at his home as he went to answer the door on Oct 2. "It was just dark, my doorbell rang and I tripped over a gym bag, tried to brace myself and it popped," Boozer said the next day, when it was announced that he needed surgery. "I jumped back up, opened the door and my hand was still a little numb." Immediately after Boozer provided an explanation, red flags went up around the NBA. After investing $80 million guaranteed in Boozer last summer, the Bulls want to make...
DWTS News: The injury curse strikes again!
2010-10-04 21:41:00
I love this curse. Not that I wish people hurt, but because I love curses and D-list celebrities. They go together like Peanut Butter and Chocolate and make me laugh. And it's not like a light fell from the ceiling and killed someone, it's usually a broken toe or a twisted ankle. Wienie injuries. Skate on a broken ankle for 6 weeks, have reconstructive surgery and skate with the staples still in. Now, that's hardcore. (pssst. That was ME in 1996. I'm badass.)Anyway, enough about me being awesome, poor lil' Audrina Patridge sprained her ankle at Dancing With The Stars practice. She's gonna live, y'all. Just has to push through the pain, and make sure Brandy gets eliminated. So we'll...

Double Injury Blow For Man United
2010-09-28 19:47:00
During his pre-match press conference, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will be out for 2/3 weeks and that Paul Scholes faces a 10 day lay-off. Rooney picked up an ankle injury during the 2-2 draw against Bolton at the weekend. The striker is now set to miss the Premier League game against Sunderland and England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro. "It will be two to three weeks. But it depends because Wayne has done quite well with his recovery from injury in the past." Sir Alex also confirmed that Scholes will be out for a short time with a slight calf problem. The good news is that Rio Ferdinand is set to return to the defence alongside Nemanja Vidic, for the first time this season. In six Premier League games without Ferdinand, the defence has conceded nine goals.

Frustrating Performance Overshadowed By Injury To Valencia
2010-09-15 00:02:00
A disappointing draw with Scottish Champions Rangers has been overshadowed by an awful injury picked up by Antonio Valencia. Sir Alex Ferguson has said that it looks like Valencia has suffered both a dislocation and a fracture. Sir Alex made 10 changes to the team who started against Everton at the weekend. Tomasz Kuszczak, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Fabio da Silva, Ji-Sung Park, Darron Gibson, Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney were all brought in. Darren Fletcher was the only player to keep his place. The visiting were happy to continue with the tactics they used which got them to the 2008 Uefa Cup final- ?parking the bus? in front of the goal. With a huge Premier League game against Liverpool at the weekend, the team selection was a gamble but the players should have had enough to score against an average side. There were very little chances for either side throughout the game, the first of which fell in the 11th minute to Hernandez, whose hea...

2010-09-01 19:47:00
Ivanovic: Injury Knock for Chelsea Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has confirmed he is set to be sidelined for two to six weeks with a back injury. Ivanovic, 26, had been struggling with the knock and missed Saturday's 2-0 Premier League victory against Stoke City. After sitting out that match, the centre-back was immediately withdrawn from the Serbia squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Slovenia. Speaking to skysports.com, Ivanovic revealed he had travelled to Belgrade but would not be able to join his team-mates on the training pitch.He said: "I came to Belgrade to see my team-mates, but the back injury is such that I cannot train or play." nuffnang_bid = "548ba4dd8d1be68d37928fe81595da-f2";
Michigan's star DB Woolfolk suffers Serious Injury
2010-08-18 02:27:00
Just this past week I had an extensive profile of star Michigan Wolverines defensive back Troy Woolfolk. It was an exclusive look at the mental/psychological battle that takes place between wide receiver and DB before every snap. Today, Woolfolk suffered an unfortunate turn of events. Details are sketchy but here's what was just released minutes ago:...
A.J. Pierzynski leaves game with injury
2010-08-08 03:15:00
A.J. Pierzynski just hit a ground ball RBI scoring the tying run in the top of the 7th inning. Going in to 3rd, AJ overshot the base, did a half slide, tried to plant his legs off-balance and had everything fail. He at least turned an ankle on the way down, swore loudly and obviously on the way off, and was taken out. He at least appeared to limp off under his own power....

White Sox could still be getting stronger in spite of Peavy injury
2010-07-08 08:58:00
Alright, so here's a little recapping. The White Sox seem to be running absolutely roughshod through what was supposed to be a very difficult 7-game stretch of their schedule. Joe Saunders doesn't really impress anyone, but still add him to the slew of recent pitchers the Sox offense reeled in and took advantage of in the right moment. His inability to get out of the 6th with two outs was clearly the difference in a game that from a defensive standpoint the Sox deserved to lose (5 errors, and a few other drops and misplay that didn't even count as such). Freddy labored and was repeatedly hit fairly soundly, but still went 6 innings without an earned run. Save for maybe Buehrle, you have to worry about pitchers on the Sox staff when you see them allowing hard contact; not Freddy. After 7 quality starts in his last 8 outings, and wins in his last six decisions, I think it can be concluded that this is just Freddy's way. The start marked an absurd 24th quality start in the l...
Jake Peavy's injury provides White Sox with first real gut-check momen
2010-07-07 07:32:00
Just about three weeks ago, Jake Peavy's potential for injury was at the forefront of the White Sox world. He was doing extremely troubling things like not throwing side-sessions, pushing his starts back, or casually tossing out quotes like "the shoulder won't push out", that all seemed designed to make the average fan think that Jake Peavy, the $15 million-dollar man, was going to wind up, reel back, and have his right arm fly off live on Fox. But then Jake proceeded to run off his best stretch of pitching of the season, and I will be the first to admit that going into Tuesday night's start, I had forgotten all about it. So when Jake staggered off the mound in obvious pain, momentarily giving me flashbacks of the horrifying Joel Zumaya injury of the previous week, it almost seemed like we deserved it, because we had taken Jake's stability for granted.
