4 Most Common Psychological Traps in Investing
2012-05-28 15:33:00
It’s been said of life that we are our own worst enemies, for the mindless decisions we make, as well as our frequent inability to learn from them. Nowhere is this more evident than on Wall Street, where this enemy from within has a way of making us too confident, too timid, too impulsive, and ...

How A Penny Stock Index Can Affect Your Investment Decisions
2012-05-11 18:44:00
Anyone who tells you that there is only one penny stock index is either intentionally misleading you or is misinformed. In fact, penny stocks are listed on almost every major index in existence. By definition, a penny stock is simply any stock that sells for less than five dollars per share. If you want to find a penny stock, take a quick scan through the NASDAQ or the New York Stock Exchange.

Australian mining towns 'top target for property investment'
2012-05-09 02:00:00
The cost of buying properties in Australia's mining towns is making them a popular target among investors. This is the opinion of Brett Alegre-Wood, founder of Your Property Club and an investor himself, who explained "affordability is going up" in these settlements, which has resulted in "huge" demand for homes in these areas. He added there are still viable opportunities to be found in large cities such as Melbourne and Sydney, but stressed it is important to take a long-term view when purchasing real estate in such areas. According to the Housing Industry Association (HIA) and JELD-WEN Population and Residential Building Report published last month, Victoria is the place to watch. Nine of the top 20 hotspots identified by the research were in the state, with Whittlesea North, Wyndham South and Cardinia - Pakenham taking second, third and fifth positions respectively. The HIA figures are based on the value of the building work approved in these areas, as ...
Romania tipped as property investment hotspot
2012-05-09 02:00:00
Investors are expected to turn their attention away from markets such as Ireland and Spain to focus instead on Romania and Bulgaria. Speaking at the IPD/Property Investor Europe (PIE) Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) Conference, partner at Schoenherr Lawyers Denise Hamer explained many of the banks in Romania have large property portfolios they now need to sell off. As a result, the value of real estate in Romania will fall and investors will be attracted to the opportunities in the country's market. "It's going to be very dynamic and volatile, a very exciting investor atmosphere," Ms Hamer predicted. Board member of S IMMO - an Austrian firm - Holger Schmidtmayr highlighted office properties in Romania's capital Bucharest as another area to watch over the coming months at the CEE-focused event. There are also signs international companies have faith in the Romanian retail market, after last month's announcement a new shopping centre due to open in Ploisesti in No...
Marrakech 'a popular location' for Moroccan property investment
2012-05-04 02:00:00
Many investors in the Moroccan real estate market have been focusing their attention on Marrakech. According to Nik Kapur, senior consultant at M2Morocco, the city's popularity as a tourist destination and its continued growth have made it a target for those with money to spend on overseas property. He highlighted improvements being made to transport links - including a new train station and airport terminal - noting there has been a "steady increase" in the number of travellers arriving in Marrakech. Approximately three million passengers pass through the city's airport every year, with airlines such as easyJet, British Airways and Iberia servicing the destination. Mr Kapur pointed out the holiday market is a lucrative one for real estate investors who have homes in Marrakech. "The lack of hotel rooms in the city centre means that there is strong demand for short-term rentals and our investors are achieving healthy yields, as well as expected future capital gr...
Investment in Brazilian land 'an affordable option'
2012-05-02 02:00:00
Buying land in an up and coming area of Brazil may prove to be a sensible investment for those keen to enter an overseas real estate market. Managing director of DLT property Dean Thomas explained purchasing a plot of land offers a "low entry, affordable way" into the sector. He highlighted the prospects for Brazilian property in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, where the tourism industry is developing and investment from businesses is flowing in. Mr Thomas added this north-eastern region of the country is not as established as other locations - such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo - providing potential opportunities for investors. Last month, Money Week cited data from Capital Economics, which showed property prices in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have climbed by 140 per cent since 2008. The organisation's figures also revealed the value of real estate in the country's top seven districts increased by 25 per cent in 2011.
Buying Silver vs. Gold as an Investment ? What?s Better?

When I started trading commodities in the fall of 1990, the price of gold was $400 an ounce. From September of 1990 to September of 2005, the price of gold ranged from around $280 to $450 an ounce: a difference of $170 over 15 years. Climate and investment 'most important factors in overseas property purchas
2012-04-25 02:00:00
The main reasons why Brits buy property in Spain or other nations overseas is due to the warmer climate and investment opportunities on offer. This is the opinion of James Price, head of international residential development at Knight Frank, who explained the ideal of owning a home in the sun has "become a reality for so many rather than the dream it once was for all but a few". He added purchasing real estate abroad is something many people aspire to, with the climate and culture more important in their decision making than whether the country is more stable than the UK economically. It is not only British buyers who are drawn to Spain, with sales and marketing director of Taylor Wimpey de Espana Marc Pritchard revealing earlier this month there have been an increasing number of Scandinavian, Dutch, Belgian and Danish investors targeting property in the country. He noted the Costa Blanca is particularly popular among buyers from these nations.
Spain 'popular due to being established investment destination'
2012-04-23 02:00:00
Buyers seeking out real estate in Spain are doing so because it is among the most established and therefore reliable markets, an expert has suggested. Liz Rowlinson, editor at A Place in the Sun Magazine, said a few years ago there was a tendency to look to invest in the next "hot, new emerging place" as buyers sought new frontiers. However, she noted, this caused problems for investors - who spent money where property bubbles existed and often lost out. Ms Rowlinson added: "They are steering very clear of those and are looking at the solid, established, well-tested markets like Spain, France and Italy." One reason many buyers could look to established European locations like Spain is because of the improving exchange rate between the pound and the euro. Managing director of Mallorca Sotheby's International Realty Stephen Dight noted this week that sterling is at a 19-month high against the multi-nation currency as it appears "attractively stable"...
Miami 'offering exciting investment opportunities'
2012-04-18 02:00:00
The city of Miami offers some outstanding tenanted prospects that could interest those seeking property in the US, in contrast with the general state of affairs in Florida. While the southern state was among those hit hard by the foreclosure crisis in 2008-09, Colordarcy.com has noted the situation has shifted in the city. The firm's managing director Loxley McKenzie said: "People would be surprised to hear that property prices have been rising in this Florida city for the past 12 months and buyer activity too has been heating up." He identified apartments and condos as being the hottest properties in the city, with the Miami Association of Realtors and Southeast Florida Multiple Listing Service noting sales of these (including single family homes) were 46 per cent higher than in 2010. People seeking foreclosed property at a low price in Florida should find an increase in the supply of it this year, managing director of Feltrim International Adam Cornwell recently pre...
The ONE Thing that Could Ruin a Great Investment
2012-04-13 19:00:00
It's always intriguing to look at the list of the most heavily-shorted stocks. Many investors like to see which companies are expected to tumble by various short-interest gauges. Owning these stocks long-term can give pause, and perhaps a reason to sell if short sellers' arguments appear to be on the mark. Other investors use the list of the most heavily-shorted stocks to find short candidates themselves. And that's a huge mistake. That's because the most-heavily shorted stocks are often the biggest gainers when major events come to pass. We've seen this phenomenon again in recent days. On Tuesday morning, April 10, distressed grocery chain Supervalu (NYSE: SVU) weighed-in with quarterly results. They were pretty bad, but perhaps . . . → Read More: The ONE Thing that Could Ruin a Great Investment

Dominican Republic 'a top choice for property investment'
2012-04-03 02:00:00
The Las Terrenas region of the Dominican Republic has been singled out as one of the best places in the world in which to buy a property. According to the Global Real Estate Index compiled by Ronan McMahon for International Living magazine, the area in the country's Samana Peninsula is a good location in which to purchase Dominican Republic property. Ranking fourth out of 27, numerous factors are expected to boost the value of real estate assets in the area, according to Mr McMahon, including a new road linking Las Terrenas to the capital city of Santa Domingo in less than two hours. He added the town performs well in terms of value for money, as well as the predicted rental income derived from any beachfront property. Describing it as "a little piece of paradise", Mr McMahon stated: "I can't think of a nicer place to have a beach home." Earlier this month, Colleen Valerio, the co-owner of Dominican Republic Properties based in Alberta, Canada, told the Cal...
Foreign Investment in Chinese Movie Theaters
2012-04-02 20:29:00
By: Mathew Alderson China now has the second biggest box office market in the world and the third biggest film production industry in the world. As you would expect, here in China we are seeing an upsurge in foreign interest in the domestic business of movie theaters or cinemas. This interest is driven by the sheer rate of growth in screen numbers, combined with the lingering expectation that the market is about to “open up.”  Increasing interest in cinemas complements and encourages the corresponding jump in interest in Sino-foreign film co-productions. But until such time, if any, as the entertainment industry in China truly does open up, we need a sober assessment of the regulatory environment. This post is part of a series aiming to assist with such an assessment. Let’s start with how China looks at foreign investment in general. The industries in which China will accept foreign investment or foreign business operations are limited.  Foreign involvement in Chines...

Morocco 'a good choice' for property investment
2012-03-29 02:00:00
Buying real estate in Morocco is a good option for anyone who is keen to invest in property markets outside Europe. According to Nik Kapur, director of M2Morocco, the country is the most attractive destination for investors in north Africa, as it has not witnessed any political upheaval, unlike Egypt and Tunisia. He noted the nation is appealing because of its proximity to Europe and its economic strength. "The economy there is still showing year-on-year growth and the safe buying process also makes it a good destination for investment," Mr Kapur asserted. Properties at the bottom and middle end of the market are the most popular at present, while there is an oversupply of high-end assets, he added. The most recent Knight Frank Global House Price Index revealed the value of homes in Morocco increased by 2.9 per cent between the final quarter of 2011 and the same period a year earlier.

Cape Verde 'offers property investment potential'
2012-03-23 01:00:00
Cape Verde may attract more interest from property investors due to the rising numbers of tourists visiting the nation. Figures published by HomeAway revealed the country entered its list of the top ten most popular holiday destinations for the first time in 2011. According to the firm, an increase in the number of charter flights to Cape Verde, as well as a growing market for package holidays, have helped boost its tourism industry. Regional director for HomeAway UK Andy Cockburn explained these factors could all result in more investors buying real estate in Cape Verde, as well as other hotspots like Dubai and Florida. "For those looking for an alternative to Europe for property investment, these mid to long-haul markets provide good opportunities. Not only can properties at attractive prices still be found, but they have strong rental potential too," he stated. Speaking to Todmorden News earlier this month, Victoria Rigg, of Whitesands Travel, commented that Cape V...
Property investment opportunities 'exist in Italy'
2012-03-22 01:00:00
Investors who know where to look will still be able to find favourable opportunities to put their money into Italian real estate. Speaking to Financial News, head of property fund management at Schroders Neil Turner highlighted retail assets in the north of the country as one area to watch, adding his firm is "very happy" to consider investing in Italy's property sector at present. "I think there has been a little bit of re-pricing of real estate, perhaps not as much as everyone on the buyside would have liked, but Italy is a really interesting one," he told the publication. Mr Turner and his colleague at Schroders Mark Callendar recently came up with some advice for those considering investing in European property markets. The experts acknowledged caution is necessary when putting money into peripheral economies, like Italy, but the pair stressed certain sectors - like northern Italy's retail industry - are worth looking into due to their "fundamental...
Spanish property 'still a popular investment'
2012-03-22 01:00:00
Buying real estate in Spain continues to be a popular option among Brits looking for property abroad. According to director of International Property Success Jon Ainge, this is because investors generally prefer to stick to something familiar. He commented potential buyers "prefer the well-trodden path rather than anything beyond their comfort zone, even though capital growth is likely to be much higher in some countries beyond Europe". Mr Ainge advised investors to carefully consider the quality of the resort in which they buy a property, as well as its accessibility and nearby facilities. He explained that taking this approach, even though such assets may be more expensive than others on the market, is more likely to result in returns in the long term. Earlier this month, editor of A Place in the Sun magazine Liz Rowlinson stated many people still consider holiday homes to be "a good investment", largely because property is outperforming other asset classes...

Holiday homes 'still considered a good investment'
2012-03-20 01:00:00
Despite the economic difficulties in the eurozone, many people still consider owning a holiday home in Spain or elsewhere on the continent to be a "good investment". This is the assertion of Liz Rowlinson, editor of A Place in the Sun magazine, who explained buying a property in Spain or another popular destination can often be a more attractive option than other kinds of investment. "It just shows that in this climate you have to be very hard-nosed about returns and the bottom line with costs," she stated. She acknowledged there is an increasing number of holiday homeowners who are considering selling up, after Home Away revealed 65 per cent of respondents to a survey it conducted are thinking about putting their overseas property on the market. However, Ms Rowlinson pointed out it is not uncommon for second homeowners to look into selling their asset, adding this attitude is "symptomatic of the climate that we are in at the moment" due to the cont...
Natal 'a top Brazilian location for property investment'
2012-03-15 01:00:00
Investors seeking real estate assets in Brazil would be wise to consider some of the developments in the north-eastern coastal city of Natal. This is the opinion of Dean Thomas, managing director of developers DLT Property, who explained the settlement is popular among domestic and international tourists who flock to the region for its excellent weather and stunning coastline. "For investors seeking stability and progressive growth coupled with endless access to scenic beauty and dazzling beaches, Natal is the ideal destination," he asserted. Mr Thomas added the economy in and around the city is growing, while the second homes market in the area is also improving. According to research published earlier this month by Knight Frank, Natal isn't the only Brazilian real estate sector on the up. The firm revealed residential property values in the nation climbed by 26 per cent over the course of 2011, putting it at the top of its Global House Price Index for the final quar...
Is a House Ever a Good Investment?
2012-03-11 14:26:00
By Vedran Vuk, Casey Research Recently, my parents were considering purchasing some real estate. As the financial professional in the family, they asked me, “What do you think? Will it go up in value? You know? not now, but eventually?” I’ve heard the same thing over and over again. In response, I shared my opinion: “Would you pay the current market price to live there even if its value never increased?” If the answer is yes, buy the property.” Essentially, is the house worth it as a home, not as an investment? In the past few decades, the concept of home ownership has been completely turned on its head. Previously, homes were considered a very long-term consumption good. This Incredibly Rare Investment Pays 10% Dividend Yields

I first uncovered this asset class years ago, when I started my High-Yield Investing advisory in 2004. In October of that year, I added one of these securities to my portfolio at $41.33. I sold it for $64.51 about two years later. Along with $9.93 in distributions, my total returns were a little more than 80%. Another one of these rare investments has also done well for current High-Yield Investing subscribers. I added it to my portfolio in late October 2010. I've received $4.28 per unit in distributions and the price has soared. So far, total returns are more than 50% in just 16 months. Get the Best "Forever Stocks" on the Market in one Single Investment
2012-02-29 02:30:00
If you think the main impediment to solid long-term investment returns is lousy stock picking, then think again. Yes, there are many factors that can hinder investment returns — missing out on fast-growing IPOs, having an advisor who steers you wrong, high fund expenses or taxes, an uncertain economy — but in my experience, the biggest threat to solid long-term returns is volatility.   Extreme fluctuations and instability in the market are so dangerous because they weaken investors' resolve, causing many to panic and "sell low." In such cases, they tend to pull out of stocks completely and refuse to get back in until they're absolutely sure the market is recovering, which could take weeks, months or even . . . → Read More: Get the Best "Forever Stocks" on the Market in one Single Investment

Infectious Disease Technologies Could Open Investment Opportunities in 2012
2012-02-17 03:00:00
The Life Sciences Report: Why is there such a disproportionate amount of effort and resources targeting oncology versus infectious disease? Stephen Dunn: Most people don’t realize that globally more people die from infectious diseases than from cancer. We currently think of cancer as a terminal disease of the developed world while we believe infectious diseases are a third-world problem and are treatable if only they had proper access to medical care. The fact of the matter is that increasing human population density combined with cheaper global travel between poor and developed regions has magnified the risk of infectious disease outbreaks in the developed world. Even now, our community and healthcare facilities are seeing all sorts of new strains of . . . → Read More: Infectious Disease Technologies Could Open Investment Opportunities in 2012: Stephen Dunn

China's New Foreign Investment Catalog. The Scope Of FDI.
2012-01-09 19:48:00
By:  Steve DickinsonAt the end of December, the NDRC issued its long awaited 2011 revision to the Catalog for Guidance for Foreign Investment 外商投资产业指导目录-2011年修订). It is a central policy of the Chinese government that foreign investment must be made in a manner that is consistent with Chinese policy and in a way that will promote China's development.
