2012 Investment Themes
2012-01-10 16:55:00
As my good friend Gary Shilling says, in leading off his piece on 2012 investment themes, which is this week’s OTB, “This year is just the first step in the long-run journey that will continue to be dominated by The Age of Deleveraging” – which also just happens to be the title of Gary’s latest book. Whether you call it that or call it the End Game, as I have, it shapes up as a profoundly different and challenging era for all of us. Gary identifies 9 causes of slow global growth in the years ahead: 1. U.S. consumers will shift from a 25-year borrowing-and-spending binge to a saving spree. This will spread abroad as American consumers curtail the . . . → Read More: 2012 Investment Themes

First, the bad news. Although Africa has vast fossil and renewable energy sources, only twenty percent of its population has direct access to electricity and in some rural areas, four out of five people are completely without power. According to the UN, over 600 million Africans currently do not have access to electric power. A depressing 70 percent of Sub-Saharan Africa’s population is living without access to clean and safe energy for their basic needs such as cooking, lighting and heating, making energy poverty among the most urgent issues facing Africa. Worldwide, more than 1.4 billion people worldwide have no access to electricity, and 1 billion more only have intermittent access. James West: It’s definitely not as objective as it was once. I’m very biased toward the companies I choose to cover because I am invested in them, my retail subscribers are invested in them and now my institutional clients are invested in them. But the caveat is that the companies are now beholden to me?not vice versa?because if they don’t deliver on what they represent, I will ensure that the whole world knows about that. Fetise.com Gets Rs. 25 Cr Seedfund Investment Through ET TV Show
2011-12-22 09:50:00
Talk about unconventional ways to raise money for your venture: how about through a Television Show? ET Now’s TV Show Super Angels, about which we had reported earlier, enabled start-up Fetise.com to raise a sizable sum through Angel Investors. Early stage investors, SeedFund will take a minority stake in Fetise, and have committed to invest $5 million. Says Harshal Shah about the show,”The format of the show is very hands-on, impromptu, and educational. It is also informative to entrepreneurs as the process of a formal or informal education in the VC space is not something that most Indian business schools are able to expose their students”. After Fetise.com’s pitch on their show,  SeedFund, which is incidentally co-founded by Mahesh Murthy, decided to invest in them. What made them stand out? Fetise.com is a 9 month old startup and they already clock half a thousand transactions a day. Says Mahesh Murthy,”What attracted us to Fetise was a clear focus on Me...

Banks are loosening up. At some banks, it is easier to short sale an investment property than it is to do a short sale on your own residence. Some commercial lenders are very lenient when it comes to letting an underwater landlord unload an apartment building. That's because commercial loans might carry different types of recourse, depending on your state laws. But even loans secured by one to four units are not impossible to short sale. 2011-12-09 13:04:00
Twitter, Facebook, Google + are arguably the 3 largest Social Networks. Twitter has seen a meteoric growth in the past few years. One reason for this was the high level of adoption among trend setters like celebrities. To counter that, Facebook introduced Pages and a Subscribe option where personalities could reach out to personalities. Twitter then bought over Tweetdeck, one of the largest 3rd Party Twitter Clients. Now, in a announcement on their official blog, Twitter has shown us its plans for an all new Twitter redesign, which includes the following: 1) Brand Pages Brand Pages, as of now, are not really different from user pages on Twitter. Some of the brands that will have dedicated brand pages from launch are American Express, Best Buy, Bing, Chevrolet, Coca-Cola, Dell, Disney, General Electric, Hewlitt-Packa...

How to Get Greater Investment Returns with Less Risk
2011-12-02 02:00:00
As a kid, I was scared to death of roller coasters. I never went on them. But in the summer of 1977, peer pressure changed that. The last day of summer camp featured a trip to Six Flags Over Georgia. After riding just about every ride in the park, my cabin — the Badger Den — had one left to conquer: the HUGE wooden roller coaster named "The Scream Machine." Every member of the Badger Den was wound up and ready to ride.  Well… just about every member. I had a dilemma: I was terrified. I was also an 11-year-old in a pack of 11-year-olds. Did I say, "That's OK guys, I'll just wait right here . . . → Read More: How to Get Greater Investment Returns with Less Risk

However, like gold, it also has a monetary component. I view silver as gold’s little brother. Small Investment In Facebook Gives Interpublic Huge Returns

In business, there’s basically no sure shot way to strike gold, some strategies click, while others don’t. Interpublic, an advertising group held one that falls on the first kind. Back in 2006 when nobody knew who Mark Zuckerberg was, Interpublic made an investment of less than $5 million into Facebook. Financial Times reports that though the exact value of the Interpublics’ stakes in the social network isn’t yet disclosed, the insiders briefed that Interpublic Group clasps a bit less than 0.5 percent of Facebook’s stocks. Investment research firms may not admire Michael Roth, CEO of Interpublic Group as the investment guru, but it turns out that he has some foresight.
