2012-01-13 17:03:00
This is the headline that I imagine while contemplating the various uses for my children’s baby teeth and saved first hair-cut remnants: Mom Frightens Fellow Jewel Shoppers with Necklace of Human Hair and Children’s Teeth. I guess the reasonable solution for each lock of baby hair is to tape it into a baby book like my mother did for me... Read more »
A Candid Conversation with THE L.A. COMPLEX Star Jewel Staite
2012-01-10 20:08:00
Forget everything you thought you knew about Jewel Staite. No, really. Take every ounce of adorkableness that you once associated with her (Fun Fact: With apologies to NEW GIRL Zooey Deschanel, Staite was there first!) and put it out of your mind because starting tonight, the former FIREFLY actress will be stepping into the stilettos of a character that’s light years away from Kaylee Frye. Manipulative, duplicitous and willing to do virtually anything — not to mention anyone — for a second shot at stardom, Staite shines as the L.A. COMPLEX’s resident bad girl Raquel in this sexy new series chronicling the salacious and sordid lives of a a group of twenty-somethings living in the same apartment complex trying to make it in Hollywood. And for good reason, the actress is relishing every minute of it. Or at least that was the distinct impression we were left with during a recent set visit that afforded theTVaddict.com with a one-on-one that touches on everything from St...

South Loop Jewel-Osco: Find Your Baby!
2011-04-12 04:25:00
If you find yourself searching for a lost love, I suggest you try finding him at Jewel-Osco on Roosevelt Road.Strangely enough, the most likely spot to "reconnect" with anyone who lives between Harrison and 68th is "The Jewel." I've lived in Chicago's South Loop (SoLo) neighborhood for about four years and I promise you, I've bumped into as many acquaintances at Jewel as I have on Facebook.
In or Out: Jewel Tones for Spring
2011-03-23 15:00:00
Meryl Streep said it best in The Devil Wears Prada "Florals? For spring? Ground breaking." She of course was acting as a sarcastic editor-in-chief of a high end fashion magazine, and she was right. This spring season designers are shaking things up with lots of bold jewel-toned colors. Gucci's whole spring 2011 line was deep golds with magentas, emeralds and ceruleans. I love the rich bold colors of the spring lines, they are extremely different then the pale pastels usually seen for spring in the past.  Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox and Beyonce are taking note on the red carpet and flaunting the deep flattering tones. What do you think, are bold bright colors for spring in...
Jewel-Osco Catalina Deal: The Reckoning
2010-10-21 04:12:00
Here's all the stuff I got in the General Mills Catalina deal at Jewel-Osco this week:I THINK that's 14 brownie mixes, 18 boxes frozen vegetables, 13 boxes Simply Gogurt, 12 tubes Pillsbury rolls, four tubes Pillsbury cinnamon rolls, five boxes Cheerios, three boxes Reece's cereal (oh, one got eaten already so it's not in the picture), 5 boxes Golden Grahams, four boxes Totino's pizza rolls and 17 cans Progresso soup. I forgot to get all the soup out of the cupboard to put it in the picture. Here's what it cost me: $70.37 minus the $50 in Catalina coupons I have left over = $10.37.Twenty bucks for 95 grocery items. See why I go out of my way to shop these...
Jewel-Osco Deals Week of Oct. 21
2010-10-21 00:10:00
The first thing I want to note in the Jewel-Osco flyer is that there are price changes in here on items included in the ConAgra Catalina deal. If your Jewel tends to get prices up ahead of time, like mine does, this could affect your deal, for better or for worse. For instance, Betty Crocker fruit snacks, which were $2 card price, will now be $1.67. The store I visited this morning still had the old price, so I couldn't check to see what the new pre-card price was. If it's still $2.50, you can do a little better buying these now, since the card price is lower. But I would bet that once the card price changes, there will be...
More Jewel Catalina Transactions and a New Moneymaker Idea
2010-10-20 22:46:00
I think I'm done shopping the Jewel-Osco Catalina deal, which ends today. But today I did notice a tempting new item to buy: Pillsbury sweet rolls priced at $4.45 pre-card, $2.50 card price. These are the fancier sweet rolls, some co-branded Cinnabon, and look like so:Transaction ideas and my transactions today beyond the break....
Jewel-Osco Creates Gluten-Free Program

General Mills Catalina Deal at Jewel: It's Working Today, Double Dips
2010-10-14 00:07:00
I just read up on the very knowledgeable Couponers Wanted forum about the new Jewel-Osco Catalina deal for General Mills products, and here's what I learned:(This is the "spend $25, get a $10 coupon" I posted about already. If you're new, see this explanation of why Catalina deals are great.)It's already working! Several of the expert couponers in the forum tried it today and got their Catalina coupons. But keep in mind that your store may or may not already have tomorrow's sale prices tagged and working.DOUBLE DIPS: There are small Catalina offers for the Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks and frosting and Nature Valley granola bars, leading to a double dip situation. Buy 5 fruit snacks, get a $3 Cat....

Jewel-Osco Catalina Deal Perfect for Food Bank Donations
2010-10-07 17:44:00
Saturday the Girl Scouts will be roaming my area (Oak Park/River Forest), picking up food bank donations from porches. Even if your local troop won't be picking up, right now is a great time to shop at Jewel for your local food bank, because that Catalina deal is making food ... FREE. See Mashup Mom for a new scenario where you can make money buying 9 cans of Healthy Choice soup ... even if you don't have coupons. With coupons, you make even more. If you have a little time, you can do this over and over and deliver oh, maybe 90 cans of soup to your local food bank? Or if the Scouts are coming to your neighborhood, better...

Here are the best sales and deals at the Chicago grocery store Jewel-Osco for the week of Oct. 7. Jewel-Osco New Catalina Deal for Free or Very Cheap Food
2010-10-06 22:40:00
I'll post the regular deals for this week at Jewel-Osco next. But first, finally, a big fat Catalina deal has come back to Jewel-Osco. Like it or loathe it, this is big agriculture food at its cheapest.(See my explanation of how Catalina deals get you cheap or free groceries if you're new to this.)This week's Catalina deal is already active, and it runs through next Wednesday, 10/13/10. Check Out Mashup Mom's Great Jewel-Osco Scenarios
2010-09-28 21:09:00
I almost stopped at Jewel today to do the P&G Catalina deal, but I held off because I have several $X/$XX coupons -- $4/$40, $5/$50 -- and I wanted to make sure I could spend enough at one time to use one. I'm so glad I did, because check out Mashup Mom's scearios for Starbucks at under $5 a bag, and free Mr. Clean. P.S. I want to buy more of those Mrs. T's Pierogies at 75 cents a box, but I don't know if I'll be toasting more in the oven anytime soon; I ran the "clean" function on my oven for the first time yesterday, and I can't get it unlocked now. I think the oven got so...
Print Coupons at New Jewel-Osco Web Site
2010-09-23 20:34:00
Not content to let Dominick's hog the spotlight with its new Just for U savings program, Jewel-Osco redesigned its Web site and now has printable coupons up there. They're RedPlum coupons, so printing them may eliminate the ability to print two of each coupon at the RedPlum site. Or, maybe not. I haven't tried printing from the new Jewel site, have you? Avenu, Jewel's personalized savings program, still looks the same. And speaking of Avenu, I'm seeing $1 off Mitchum antipersperant on mine. So if you have a Mitchum man like I do, you might want to clip the $.75/1 from the 9/12 SmartSource and check the shelf price to see if the combined $1.75 savings brings it down to...
Jewel-Osco Deals and Coupon Matchups, Week of 9/23
2010-09-22 22:18:00
Stuff to buy at Jewel today because it will be more expensive tomorrow: Campbell's tomato soup is 39 cents today (moneymaker after printable coupon), will be 67 cents tomorrow. 5 lb. bags of Gold Medal flour are 99 cents today if you buy 6 -- I don't know what the price iwll be tomorrow but the ad shows Jewel flour for $1.99 for the same size bag. Here are the best of this week's grocery deals at Chicago grocery store Jewel-Osco: the best grocery sales, all the buy one get one free deals, the best special offers and the manufacturer's coupons. And guess what? There aren't many special anything, yet again -- no Catalina deal, few BOGOs which is apparently a...
What Tiger Woods considers The Crowning Jewel of All of Asian Golf
2010-09-15 20:34:00
It took just one staging of the WGC-HSBC Champions to dispel all doubts as to whether a World Golf Championships event could succeed in Asia. Tim Maitland reports on how the Shanghai tournament has spearheaded another step up the ladder for tournament golf in Asia. At some stage between the inception of the HSBC Champions in 2005 and Tiger Woods last year calling it ?the crowning jewel of all of Asian golf", golf in Asia made a transition. Not that the autumn swing to the East was ever just a bit of fun - the big names that did travel certainly lived up to their billing ? but now there is little question that Asia has taken its place at the top table of top-class tournament play. The who, what, why, when, where of Asia?s coming of age? The ?where?? is a no-brainer. The venue: the Nelson & Haworth design Sheshan International Golf Club. The ?who?? or ?what?? is just as easy: the HSBC Champions - whether through its winners-only fields, the champions it produce...

Shopping Trip: Free Cheese at Jewel, 60% Savings at Dominick's
2010-09-03 06:08:00
Tonight I went to Jewel-Osco and did the Kraft Catalina deal for the second time and confirmed that, despite the wording in the ad, you can use the $5 Catalina coupon you get to pay for it and still get another one printed out. That is to say, it rolls. So if you have a few of the $5/5 printable coupons, you can invest $5 on your first purchase of 5 packs of cheese, then use the $5 Catalina coupon that spits out, plus a $5/5 coupon, to get more packs of cheese without paying anything but the tax. Besides the five cheeses, I got a rain check at Jewel for Super Chill Seltzer @ $1.79 (I guess it's a...
Jewel-Osco Coupon Policy for Download
2010-08-27 02:53:00
I just figured out how to post the Jewel-Osco official coupon policy as a document you can download. This way, it has the company logo and all the other official things that Jewel put in, so it looks like the official document it is if you need to show it to your local cashier or manager. JEWEL-OSCO--Coupon_PolicyI.doc- Here is the post version of Jewel-Osco's coupon policy, and here is my commentary on Jewel's coupon policy, which is a good place for you to comment as well. (And in case you're wondering, a Jewel spokesperson was nice enough to email the document to me. It's not yet available on their Web site, but it's not a leaked document or anything.)...
Jewel-Osco Deals and Coupon Matchups - Week of August 26: Free Ken's S
2010-08-25 19:07:00
This week the big Jewel-Osco deals I see are free Ken's salad dressing after coupon, cheap 12-packs pop when you buy 4 and $1 Goldfish crackers. Unfortunately I think all the Goldfish coupons are now expired. There's a "10 for $10" sale, but you Frugalistas know that this just means a bunch of items are on sale for $1 each -- you don't have to buy 10. So I just listed the best deals of those in the regular all-week sales. It seems that some changes at Jewel-Osco are becoming permanent, from the looks of this flyer. Still only a couple buy-one-get-one-fre-e items and no Catalina deal, only an "instant savings" offer that takes 50 cents off per item. Hmph. Buy...

Free Shopping at Jewel-Osco (Plus a Few Items That Cost Money)
2010-07-31 21:23:00
Some people have gotten guff at their Jewel-Osco for using the BOGO Athenos Hummus coupon on the BOGO sale to get two containers free. But I had no problem. Now I'm just bummed that although both our computers say we have used up all our prints, I could only find one non-expired copy. Disorganized! Oh well, can't much complain when I got all this free today: two hummus and two boxes baby wipes. For the Pampers I used the $2/1 coupon from the 6/6 P&G insert, which, which expires today, and for the Huggies a $2/1 from Coupons.com. Both brands were on sale for $1.99. Also picked up those insulated sippy cups on clearance* for $3.99, the fly swatter...

My Free Bread, Almost-Free Produce at Jewel-Osco
2010-07-16 03:53:00
I printed out about 10 each of those produce and bread coupons (Mashup Mom reports the bread one is no longer available) from Jewel-Osco, which expire in a week. Now if only I had time to stop in constantly I could feed my family for free every day! Today I found time for one trip, with all 3 kids. We got:   1 pint blueberries, $1.28 + 2 green peppers, 58 cents each produce total: $2.26 produce cost after $2 produce coupon: 26 cents!   1 bakery focaccia, $2.79 cost after free bread coupon: free! 2 Wonderful Pistachios, BOGO @ $4.99 cost after two $1/1 printable coupons: $2.99 With tax, I paid $3.55 for this bag of groceries. Jewel-Osco Deals and Coupon Matchups - Fourth of July Week
2010-06-30 23:09:00
Can I just tell you that since I can hardly eat anything right now due to my dental problem, typing these ads is making me so freakin' hungry? On the upside, I guess having an abscessed tooth is turning out to be a great summer weight loss plan. On Thursday July 1 there's a one-day sale: Tyson boneless, skinless frozen chicken breasts $6.99 for the 3-lb. box, 8-ct. Bounty paper towels or 12-ct Charmin toilet paper for $4.99 (regular $10.99, use $.25/1 from the 6/6 P&G and load a UPromise coupon as well), Frito-Lay multi-pack $4.49; Corona 12-pk. $9.99 For your Fourth of July weekend, Jewel-Osco has a THURS-MONDAY sale: sweet corn 19 cents, sweet cherries $1.99/lb., whole watermelon $2.99, Lay's potato...
Levin to auction "jewel of an opportunity" on Michigan Avenue in
2010-06-18 21:54:00
In the years prior to the housing downturn, developers looked a the 251' x 134' parcel at 1000 S Michigan Ave in the South Loop and envisioned a soaring condominium tower with wide, unobstructed views onto Grant Park and Lake Michigan. On July 27, someone may take the first steps toward realizing the lot's potential by buying the parcel during a court-ordered auction managed by Rick Levin & Associates. "This parcel is for an investor or developer who has the insight and resources to capitalize on a "jewel" of an opportunity," Levin says in his auction promotions. "A tremendous place to park cash and be uniquely positioned for the next up cycle!" According to Levin, the property was appraised at $24...
Wow: Jewel-Osco Parent Secretly Funded "Grass Roots" Opposition t
2010-06-08 03:22:00
Check out this Wall Street Journal story about how Jewel-Osco paid gazillions to fund a citizen's opposition to Wal-Mart in Mundelein. Holy Cats. Usually we think of Wal-Mart as the sneaky, calculating bad guys. They move in and force local companies out of business, bring down local wages, etc., right? But here is a story about other companies doing things so sneaky Wal-Mart almost looks saintly. Well. Finding out that Jewel-Osco did something this creepy doesn't make Wal-Mart de facto good. But wow, what a shock to find out that this has been going on all over America -- in fact the article describes a consulting firm that specializes in leading citizen opposition to projects, mainly Wal-Mart projects. Obviously, these...
Jewel-Osco Deals and Coupon Matchups for the Week of May 12
2010-05-12 18:50:00
Here are the best deals I see this week at Jewel-Osco. I probably won't shop there this week, but if I did the only things I'd get are the blackberries for $1.49 or the organic strawberries at $3.99/lb., and the cage-free eggs at $2.50. CATALINA OFFER: Spend $20 on participating General Mills products, get $5 and 50 Bonus Box Tops (worth 10 cents each to your school, so this is like a $5 bonus for your school). Products include cereals @ $1.99, fruit snacks, canned vegetables, Progresso soup, but I don't see any truly exciting deals here. Any of you? THURS-SAT ONLY: blackberries or blueberries 4.4-6 oz. $1.48 (limit 3) Smirnoff Vodka, Captain Morgan or Parrot Bay Rum or Seagram's...
ANOTHER ConAgra Catalina Deal Coming at Jewel-Osco
2010-05-12 05:53:00
Got this warning about the next big ConAgra Catalina deal at out of the coupon printer at Jewel-Osco today: "SAVE BIG on brands for the quick meals you squeeze in between everything else. Purchase $25.00 in participating items from ConAgra between 5/20/10 and 5/26/10 and receive a $10 coupon to use on your next shopping trip." Notice the 2.5:1 ratio -- this is a good Catalina deal, assuming there is also a good spread between with card sale prices and regular prices. (See my explanation of how Catalinas work  and how they can get you free food, if that sentence baffled you.) Many of the Catalina deals we've seen lately only offer $5 if you spend $20 or even $25 -- ratios...

3 Catalina Deals for Jewel-Osco This Week, Including Plenty of Ice Cream
2010-05-06 00:02:00
There are three new Catalina offers this week at Jewel-Osco: Unilever, a Dr Pepper/ConAgra/Hershey's (or maybe just a bunch of random products), and a Nestle Ice Cream Catalina! The Unilever deal also includes ice cream so it must be almost summer, no? This is good because all that ice cream we bought on Halloween is almost gone. (If you don't know what Catalina deals are, read my Catalina primer that explains how to work these deals at Jewel to get the freebies and the extremely cheapies.)  ...

Jewel-Osco Deals and Coupon Matchups, Week of April 29
2010-04-28 16:27:00
There is a P&G Catalina offer this week -- spend $20, get a $5 coupon -- but I'm not too excited about it because they all look like Osco items and those items typically are not very advantageous to buy in a Catalina deal. (Don't know what the heck I'm talking about? Read up on Catalina deals here.) Better, there is the chance to double-dip on Kellogg's cereals Saturday only. The current offer is Buy 4 boxes Kellogg's cereals at $2.99, get $4 coupon at the register. (This is supposed to end 5/1, although it doesn't say so in the ad) See Mashup Mom's heads-up on the new Catalina offer that starts Saturday -- which will pay you a $3 Catalina coupon...

Jewel-Osco Grocery Deals Week of March 25
2010-03-25 03:22:00
All the sales and special offers at Jewel-Osco for the week of March 25.
Shopping Notes: Jewel-Osco and CVS
2010-03-16 04:05:00
My Jewel-Osco today had no trace of free Jose Ole chimichangas (probably sold out everywhere but I couldn't even find a spot in the freezer for them at the Oak Park Madison Street store). But they did have a clearance cart full of Asian foods including Wanchai Ferry meals for around $3. If only I'd had some of these $1.50/1 printables on me, I'd have bought them (also in the 3/7 SmartSource). And the 1 Liter bottles of Chill seltzer water are on sale for just 25 cents (normally 89 cents). We go through a lot of these, so I was bummed that there were only four on the shelf. Other varieties (like the flavored waters) were more. On our...
