Boehner?s Address on the Economy, Debt Limit, and American Jobs VIDEO TEXT
2012-05-16 02:11:00
Following is the full text, as prepared for delivery, of House Speaker John Boehner?s (R-OH) address to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation?s 2012 Fiscal Summit on efforts to put our nation back on a path to prosperity and economic growth by cutting government spending, preventing job-crushing tax hikes, and making long-term changes to entitlement programs. In the address, Boehner renews his commitment to the principle that any increase in the nation?s debt limit must be accompanied by spending cuts and reforms larger than the amount of the debt limit hike. Failing to again meet this standard ? dubbed the ?Boehner principle? by Stanford economist John B. Taylor ? in conjunction with the next debt limit increase means pushing American prosperity and job growth farther away. Sen. Blunt says, "[f]uel costs are on track to hit an average of $4 a gallon by summertime?that's more than double what they cost when President Obama took office, and it marks a record high for the last two months. Jobs recovery suffers setback in March
2012-04-07 10:05:00
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Employers hired far fewer workers in March than in previous months, keeping the door open for the Federal Reserve to provide more monetary support for a still sluggish economy. The report was seized upon by Republicans hoping to make the weak economy the centerpiece of their campaign for November's presidential and congressional elections. Even as the unemployment rate fell to a three-year low of 8.2 percent, job growth slowed to 120,000 last month, the Labor Department said on Friday, the smallest increase since October. ...

Yahoo cuts 2,000 jobs as radical reshaping begins

Yahoo said Wednesday that it will eliminate 2,000 employees, around 14% of its workforce, as new CEO Scott Thompson begins radically streamlining the company. The long-rumored job cuts could be the first of several rounds as Thompson pares Yahoo (YHOO, Fortune 500) down to focus on what he views as the company's core business lines. Thompson, who joined Yahoo in January, plans to provide more information about his strategy during Yahoo's first-quarter earnings announcement, scheduled for April 17. "Today's actions are an important next step toward a bold, new Yahoo -- smaller, nimbler, more profitable and better equipped to innovate," Thompson said in a written statement. "Our goal is to get back to our core purpose -- putting our users and advertisers first." Yahoo said its job cuts will save the company $375 million a year when they are completed. It expects to take a $125 million to $145 million charge this quarter for severance costs. Thompson is aiming to do something his re...
Cloud Computing May Bring 2 Million New Jobs To India
2012-04-04 11:45:00
Cloud Computing is all set to bring about a huge change in how the IT industry works in India. According to estimates, the cloud is supposed to bring 2 million new job opportunities to the IT sector. But are we prepared for the change that is coming? If an increasing amount of enterprises are going to take up cloud computing, the Indian IT industry as we know it is going to change. Adopting cloud computing will bring down costs and at the same time will put the process of installing and maintaining servers and infrastructure redundant. That will mean engineers who specialize in installation and maintenance will probably face difficulties because the demand for them will go down. Many companies who invest quite a sum of money in IT infrastructure for their offices will now just put everything on to the cloud. This is definitely a stress-free prospect for many companies. At the same time it will cost the IT industry a lot of traditional jobs. Engineers specializing in cloud applicati...

Eric Cantor Statement On House Vote To Send The JOBS Act To The President
2012-03-28 02:13:00
WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Today, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) made the following statement on sending the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act as amended by the Senate to the President.?Today, the House voted to send the bipartisan JOBS Act to the President?s desk for his signature and deliver real results for our nation?s small business owners, entrepreneurs and innovators. Both parties in Congress, the President and entrepreneurs like Steve Case came together on this bill that will increase capital formation and pave the way for more small-scale businesses to go public and create jobs. The bipartisan JOBS Act represents an increasingly rare legislative victory in Washington where both sides seized the opportunity to work together, improved the bill and passed it with strong bipartisan support. We should build on this momentum going forward, and use the opportunity provided by the Small Business Tax Cut in April, so we can continue to help small businesses and job creator...
Viom Networks To Cut Back 800 Jobs Due To Uninor’s 2G Fallout
2012-03-27 10:28:00
The Uninor 2G licence cancellation has resulted in major changes in other telecom and support companies. Tata’s Telecom tower joint venture Viom Networks has planned to restructure their business. This could result in a cut of 40% of its workforce across India. That amounts to almost 800 jobs. Consulting firm AT Kearney has recommended that Viom  cut back its costs dramatically or risk major problems in staying afloat. Besides Tata, the Kanoria Family, IDFC, SBI-Macquarie, Government of Singapore Investment Corporation and Oman Investment Fund are all shareholders in the Viom Networks. The company has not yet confirmed this development but it has been confirmed through various sources that the firm has asked 8 senior executives to resign immediately. This reduction in workforce will impact various departments in the company. The reason for all these cuts recommended by AT Kearney in anticipation of the major hit that the company may take on account of the losing its high potent...

International Monetary Fund recently warned that "The global economy is at a precarious stage and downside risks have risen sharply." There was much anticipation in advance of Friday’s Labor Department employment report for February. The report has a reputation for often coming in with a big surprise in one direction or the other that creates a dramatic market response. This time it did not. The consensus forecast was that 213,000 new jobs were created in February, and the unemployment rate would remain at 8.3%. The actual report was that 227,000 new jobs were created, and the unemployment rate remained at 8.3%.
