Sen. Joe Lieberman Retires Today - YIPPEE!
2011-01-20 02:06:00
Sen. Joe Lieberman announced his retirement today, and after a long career of public service as Connecticut's senior Senator. All this blogger can say is "YIPPEE!" Look, Senator Lieberman will not be forgotten for endorsing Senator John McCain over Senator Barack Obama for President in 2008. Just thinking about that again brings up bad memories for many Democrats. In 2008, Lieberman took Obama to task for his words putting the blame for the rise of Iran on America's fighting the Iraq War, which Obama has long said was the wrong war. Rather than siding with Obama, Lieberman went against him even though he was warned not to do so. In one of the dumbest political moves since Nixon and Watergate, Joe was so sure Obama was going to lose, and probably because he thought America would not vote for a black person for President, he openly went against him. Today, Joe smartly looked around and figured he would have a hard time getting money and help, especially from Dems. Now...

2008-05-28 00:24:00
Controversial Pastor John Hagee And Joe Lieberman Apparently Share Enough Common Ground With Each Other To Hang Out At July Event… Joseph Lieberman’s self-proclaimed “man of God” in the “likeness of Moses” (YouTube video here), “Pastor”, John Hagee, is hosting a huge, Nazi-ish, Catholic-bashing, gay-bashing “revival” on July 22nd, and thus far, it appears ole’ Jumpin’ Joe will be one of the headlining keynote speakers. It should be quite a par-tay, in which we can expect the Panamanian-born U.S. Senator by the name of SeÅ„or John McCain, who eventually migrated to the Great State of Arizona, to be absent due to the fact he recently threw the controversial “man of God” and self-described “spiritual adviser” under the bus to appease the mainstream media and to boost his appeal to the masses. “Jumpin’ Joe” Lieberman Jumps Yet Again — This Time On The “Appeasement” Bandwagon” In “Jumpin’ Joe’s” Op-Ed piece in today’s Wall Street Journal today (H/T again goes to MemeOrandum), one will find much of what one would expect to find; all pretty much self-explanatory if, by no other means, the title and sub-title of my own post. Some of Mr. Lieberman’s points, I could not agree more with. He blasts the Democratic (so-called) “Leaders” in Congress for bending over backwards to accomodate the far, FAR Left amongst them. AMEN to that one, Joe. I would consider sending money to the Democratic Party and promoting the Democratic Party if only they would stop letting eighteen year college students with blogs dictate their talking points. Hillary Clinton - The New Joe Lieberman?
2008-04-15 22:34:00
Now Hillary may not be openly supporting John McCain like Joe Lieberman but she is certainly doing McCain's campaigning for him. While the polls from PA are mixed there is reason to believe it may be hurting Clinton more than Obama. Robert Creamer attempts to give us an explanation. Why Hillary Clinton's Slash-and-Burn Politics May Hurt Her More Than Obama First, a negative attack has to ring true to the people you are attempting to persuade. Initial polls seem to indicate that most of the people who are receptive to the "Obama-is-a-condescending-'elit-ist'-argument" already supported Hillary in the primary before the attacks began. Clinton's attacks may rally some of her troops, but the argument doesn't seem to be that persuasive to actual undecided voters.Of course one reason may have to do with the credibility of the messenger. It's tough to attack someone else for "elitism" if you've spent the last 16 years in Washington as First Lady and Senator, and your family brought i...

The Endorsement Game Continues
2007-12-20 20:33:00
Des Moines Register Backs Clinton, McCainThe Des Moines Register endorsed Hillary Clinton last weekend, effectively endorsing her campaign's idea that her experience trumps any rhetoric for change. The newspaper, Iowa's largest, wrote, "The job requires a president who not only understands the changes needed to move the country forward but also possesses the discipline and skill to navigate the reality of the resistant Washington power structure to get things done. That candidate is New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton." Clinton has already begun referencing the endorsement in not one, but two new advertisements.Losing out on the endorsement is certainly a blow to Clinton's chief rivals in the state, Barack Obama and John Edwards, who won their support in 2004. In the past, the paper has typically gone with the fresh-faced or change candidate, leading many to believe that Obama would likely garner the endorsement. Indeed, the paper has had glowing words for Obama (which he...
Joe Lieberman Endorses John McCain
2007-12-20 10:28:00
Senator Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) further drove himself out of the graces of the Democratic Party when he endorsed Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Tuesday. Perhaps Lieberman was pushing them farther away in spite. Images of an irate, half-mad, Zeil Miller endorsing President Bush at the 2004 Republican National Convention come rushing back to me. The rarity of cross party endorsements in presidential elections is what makes this especially backstabbing. Lieberman has enraged Democrats over the past few years by refusing to go against the president on the Iraq war and a possible war with Iran. Lieberman has been a strong Bush supporter when it comes to the war in Iraq which cost him the Democratic nomination in Connecticut for U.S. Senate when he ran for re-election. Ned Lamont, who defeated Lieberman in the Democratic primary but lost to him when he ran as an Independent, criticized him for saying in 2006 that he wanted to elect a Democrat...

Whither Third Party?
2007-11-18 23:33:00
Independents are a rapidly growing block of voters--nearly one-third of today's electorate identify themselves as independents--yet of the 535 voting members of Congress, just two--Connecticut's Joe Lieberman and Vermont's Bernie Sanders--are independents. No third party candidate has won the presidency since Abraham Lincoln in 1860--the party had only recently formed following the collapse of the Whigs. No third party candidate has won a single electoral vote since George Wallace in 1968. Ross Perot was a polling leader for parts of the 1992 campaign and though he finished with nearly 19% of the vote--more votes than any independent candidate in US history--he failed to garner a single electoral vote. In recent elections, third party candidates have been reduced to a spoiler's role without any serious chance of victory. So why haven't independent candidates been more successful and what obstacles do they face in 2008? Let's find out.More than ever before, the 2008 cycle...
The alternate universe of Bill Kristol
2007-11-13 05:59:00
Just how strange is the alternate universe of Bill Kristol? He thinks that Joe Lieberman as the Vice Presidential Candidate would save the Republicans is 2008. Eunomia explains just how idiotic this is. What Kristol proposes is that nominating Lieberman would create the conditions for such a massive victory for the Republicans, when the woes of the latter are closely tied to the foreign policy decisions that constitute the chief reason why Kristol admires Lieberman and thinks he should be a VP nominee. In short, the very things that make Lieberman attractive to interventionists in the GOP are the things that make the rest of us want to run screaming from the room. Adding Lieberman to a ticket that already included a candidate who blathers about ?Islamofascism? or takes an ueber-hawkish line on Iran would be the closest thing to a deliberate act of self-destruction by a party that we would have ever seen.
Joe Lieberman: The torrent has begun
2007-11-13 02:25:00
The pro-victory trio Joe Lieberman has been against the war from the beginning, but this is still a very damning statement against his former party: No Democratic presidential primary candidate today speaks of America's moral or strategic responsibility to stand with the Iraqi people against the totalitarian forces of radical Islam, or of the consequences of handing a victory in Iraq to Al Qaeda and Iran. ... Democrats have remained emotionally invested in a narrative of defeat and retreat in Iraq, reluctant to acknowledge the progress we are now achieving, or even that progress has enabled us to begin drawing down our troops there. Columnists George Will and William Buckley, conservative opponents of the war, have moved on to other subjects. Hillary Clinton has taken a sextagonal approach to the war (it varies from Michael Moore to Norman Podhoretz, depending on the audience). Finally, candidates, blogs, and congress have been quiet or unenthusiastic in their attacks on Bush'...

Connecticut? A new poll shows that independent Senator Joe Lieberman would lose a rematch of his 2006 race were the voting held today. Ned Lamont, the anti-war candidate who upset Lieberman in the Democratic primary, would beat Lieberman 48%-40%. Lieberman left the party after losing the primary and ran in the general election as an independent. In the Senate, he caucuses with the Democrats, but typically sides with Republicans on foreign policy votes. The news probably pleases anti-war Democrats, but the results have little significance since Lieberman's term will not expire until 2012.Idaho? I had heard this on Thom Hartmann this morning and I did pay much attention to it.Lieberman as next Attorney General? That's what Marjorie Cohn is saying on The Thom Hartmann Show. The talk started a few hours ago, from what they're saying. (not that it didn't occur to any of us earlier, but it's going around now) Per Cohn: It would stop the Senate investigations dead in their tracks. It would guarantee a Senate confirmation. It would change the balance of power in the Senate, in favor of the Republicans. And it smells of Karl Rove.I didn't really pay that much attention to it because while it would be a plus for the Bush administration I really can't see Lieberman giving up another five and half years in the Senate for 16 months as AG.GOTTALAFF has another rumor I have heard before that while it's crazier might make more sense. ? The US Senate is moving to reform the primary system used to select nominees for the two major parties. A bill introduced by Senators Joe Lieberman, Amy Klobuchar, and Lamar Alexander would create a rotating regional primary system. The country would be divided into four regions and each region would vote one month apart beginning in March. The order of the regions would be determined by lottery. Iowa and New Hampshire would maintain their spots as the first caucus and primary states before the regional primary voting would occur.? A ballot proposal could disrupt Democratic control over California's 55 electoral votes by awarding electoral votes to the winner of each Congressional district. President Bush would have gained 22 electoral votes in 2004 under such a system. If adopted, the measure would significantly hamper the chances of any Democratic nominee. Currently, only Maine and Nebraska award electoral votes based on the winner of each Congressional district.? Marc A...

Senate Watch: 1st Tier Races
2007-07-30 23:47:00
After picking up six seats in 2006, Democrats seized control of the Senate with a razor-thin majority. With Senator Joe Lieberman declaring himself an "Independent Democrat" and Senator Tim Johnson remains absent while recovering from brain surgery, Democrats have found it difficult to move their agenda forward. The 2008 Senate races have become all the more significant for Democrats, seeking to build a more workable majority, and for Republicans, hoping to take back control. In 2008, 34 seats will be up for grabs--22 Republican-held seats and 12 Democrat-held will face voters. Those numbers along with the current political environment--low approval for President Bush and increasing dissatisfaction over Iraq--create a landscape that will be challenging for Republicans. Democrats were able to defeat six Republican incumbents in 2006 and it seems likely that they could increase their majority in 2008.We have ranked the following contests as 1st tier races--meaning that we believe t...

Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-Connecticut)Lieberman will never break. He hopes the cots will "wake up Senators and Americans?""Mandated Defeat"...new tag phraseJoe, let's back up, was Al-Qaeda there before? No. The fact they even exist in Iraq is a defeat for us.He's seatbelted down on this Iran bandwagon...it's scary. Most Republicans aren't even this hawkish with Iran. How many Senators tonight are going to try to drive their point by quoting some soldier who is either supportive or unsupportive of the war? My guess is all of them.Until "early next year." We don't have the stomach to wait.Does this guy really think generals are going to call for a withdrawal?"Are you staying?" "How can we help?" Really? I'm sure that minority of Iraqis exist and are quickly being murdered or sent to Canada or Michigan for asylum.I'm so damn pissed this guy won reelection...he serves as a propaganda tool for the warhawks. He should be recalled.
