Distraction Journalism
2012-01-19 18:48:00 Some supposedly well-informed writers attempt, at the dawn of this election year, with an apparent straight face, contend that the incumbent president “as yet has not had a single significant scandal to his name.” They get away with this because our supposedly even-handed legacy media choose not to report stories which, if they had occurred ...

The role of independent journalism ? my take
2011-09-25 05:54:00 By J L Samboma The following piece is the outcome of a recent encounter I had on an internet forum. It began after I commented on the role of independent journalism in society. It was the first time I had been forced to define what independent journalism means to me. I say "forced" because it made me dig deep. Ducking out of a response was not an option. I have reproduced it here because I believe it is relevant. Secondly, because I hope to open up the debate to anyone who has a contrary view, so that the dialectice can continue on in a wider sphere. This is what I wrote:

The Future of Journalism: Casey Anthony Case Study
2011-09-14 22:50:00 Originally posted at NikkyRaney.com Written by Nikky Raney Casey Anthony is the most hated person in America and the way the news media covered her trial as well as her life in general didn't help the people in our society think highly of her. CNN, MSNBC, FOX, ABC and the rest of the televised news media tried to be objective by interviewing prosecuting attorneys as well as defense attorneys, but the look on the faces of those reporting and the tones in their voice showed that they had an opinion and the opinion was not favorable. The print media was not much better where the blogs were overtaking the online news sites and the papers and magazines didn't paint her in a favorable light either, and Newsweek even did an article after the fact that suggested that she could be placed in the same category as OJ Simpson as someone who got away with murder. There was also an article in Newsweek titled Did Casey Anthony Get Away With Murder? With a title like that it's hard to no...

DePaul journalism students hit the streets - and rails - for Red Line Proje
2011-05-26 14:00:00 The CTA's Red Line truly connects the city of Chicago from north to south -- and is fodder for great stories. After all, where would CTA Tattler be without it?A journalism instructor at DePaul University recognized those simple facts, and gave birth to a stunning class assignment, the Red Line Project.Mike Reilley, the instructor and site architect, pulls out an apt analogy to explain the idea for the Red Line Project site: "I concepted the site when studying at The Poynter Institute, a journalism think-tank, in the Summer of 2009. The idea was rooted in an analogy I had used for years to explain to students the difference between the Internet and the Web -- to think of the Internet...

Trick 'Gotcha' Journalism

Yes, I still say that the teabaggers are a bunch of heartless and more often than not, mindless racists, thinly veiled by their anger at all things 'liberal', unless it is Social Security, Medicare any other government program that takes care of their dumb asses. So Congressman Bob Etheridge, a democrat from North Cakalacky, was confronted by a peach fuzz faced 'student' asking him a baited question that among a certain group...

2009-11-17 03:35:00 An unlikely pairToday, I got the news that my mentor just died. I'm really heartbroken. I'm in pieces, actually. What is there to do or say, except to write? The medium we both loved best. David McClendon was hired at the Chi-town Daily News just a couple of weeks before I started there as an intern. We sat back to back in a small office. On my second day, David got my attention by turning around and poking me in the back of the neck. It was weird, and I remember thinking, "I don't know about this guy... How to Save Newspapers and Journalism ¦ Barry Ritholtz [del.icio.us]
2009-09-12 10:34:00 We know that the annual subscription model won?t work outside of finance. And that there will be numerous papers that won?t survive, either on or off line. Free content is going to continue to siphon off readers and ad dollars, albeit modestly. ?Revenue from newspaper classified ads is off nearly 50 percent in the past decade, a drop that comes to almost $10 billion. Only a fraction of this loss is because of Newmark?s company, but as the largest online classified site, craigslist is easy to blame,? says Wired. Total revenue (from all sources) fall last year was $7.5 billion. And this means that total (free) reader numbers will be going down in the future; Papers need to do the math to ensure the loss of advertising revenue from non-paying readers is offset by subscriber revenue.

2009-07-24 00:41:00 While it's nice to know that Chicago's very own federal judge Richard Posner is a fan of newspapers, it's interesting to hear what he thinks will help save them. Here's what he blogged today on the future of newspapers: "Expanding copyright law to bar online access to copyrighted materials without the copyright holder's consent, or to bar linking to or paraphrasing copyrighted materials without the copyright holder's consent, might be necessary to keep free riding on content financed by online newspapers from so impairing the incentive to create costly news-gathering operations that news services like Reuters and the Associated Press would become the only professional, nongovernmental sources of news and opinion."...

The redundant story: math and the future of journalism
2009-06-01 17:27:00 I have long argued the rather unoriginal position that journalism’s mission to inform has its roots in religious ‘infotainment’ both popular and intellectual - moralising editorials replaced moralising sermons, etc. But I’ve been struggling to express why that mission seems such a recurrent trope in history. The use of stories for entertaining and moral purposes is clear ...

Obama: justifying a news media bailout?

Is he merely playing to the gallery? Or is he providing the intellectual justification for future action? Or am I simply indulging my journalistic passion for over-interpretation?

Robert Fisk in Kandahar, Afghanistan
2008-11-20 11:24:00 Things don't look so good.Fisk is a great writer, and even where I disagree with his POV, his analysis is generally right on the money. He's one of our finest foreign correspondents writing in English today. The Taliban are winning, at least in Kandahar. The Afghan "Army" leaves the Kandahar streets by 4 PM every day. The Afghan Police are lethargic and barely even check passengers anymore at the Kandahar Airport.Everyone is against the occupation and the extremely corrupt and shitty Afghan government, but no one will say a word against the Taliban.Ominously, there are rumblings that indicate that forces other than the Taliban, such as the Taliban's old enemies, may also take up arms against "the foreign occupiers" soon. Free Speech via Journalism Equals Democracy
2008-07-12 19:33:00 Bill Moyers, in his speech to the audience at the National Conference on Media Reform,"Democracy without honest information creates the illusion of popular consent at the same time that it enhances the power of the state and the privileged interests that the state protects. And nothing characterizes corporate media today more than its disdain toward the fragile nature of modern life and its indifference toward the complex social debate required of a free and self-governing people."Journalism can make or break a democracy. In the swirl surrounding the events of September 11, 2001, was there any debate, or simply a lying down and a dogged acceptance of the established line, spoon-fed from the current administration? We desperately need media reform, as some outing of the truth from the perpe-traitors.For more on media reform, see StopBigMedia.com

2008-06-14 03:54:00 Updated June 18:We've just passed 1,600 visitors a day for the past week, even though I haven't posted much. Everybody local I talk to thinks this blog is some kind of a joke, but according to The Truth Laid Bear, it is in the top 1,500 blogs on the Internet. That's out of over 90 million blogs. It's true that TTLB doesn't count them all, but still...Everybody seems to think it's simple to get 1,500 visitors/day traffic. Tell you what. Go for it. Go make yourself a blog and see how long it takes you to get up to 1,500 visitors/day. It took me 3 1/2 years of hard, painstaking work.I may try to get on with BlogAds. At that kind of traffic, you might start making a little bit. You really need over 1,000/day and a tightly focused blog to get any significant ads at all. Problem with this blog is it is not that tightly focused. I had an advertiser, but he wanted $25/month and I told him to walk. At this point, I probably want something like $60/month or so, or maybe even more.Unless...
