Everything I know about journalism, I learned from David
2009-11-17 03:35:00 An unlikely pairToday, I got the news that my mentor just died. I'm really heartbroken. I'm in pieces, actually. What is there to do or say, except to write? The medium we both loved best. David McClendon was hired at the Chi-town Daily News just a couple of weeks before I started there as an intern. We sat back to back in a small office. On my second day, David got my attention by turning around and poking me in the back of the neck. It was weird, and I remember thinking, "I don't know about this guy... Who pokes their new co-worker in the back of the neck?" Yeah, I'm terrible with first impressions....

How to Save Newspapers and Journalism ¦ Barry Ritholtz [del.icio.us]
2009-09-12 10:34:00 We know that the annual subscription model won?t work outside of finance. And that there will be numerous papers that won?t survive, either on or off line. Free content is going to continue to siphon off readers and ad dollars, albeit modestly. ?Revenue from newspaper classified ads is off nearly 50 percent in the past decade, a drop that comes to almost $10 billion. Only a fraction of this loss is because of Newmark?s company, but as the largest online classified site, craigslist is easy to blame,? says Wired. Total revenue (from all sources) fall last year was $7.5 billion. And this means that total (free) reader numbers will be going down in the future; Papers need to do the math to ensure the loss of advertising revenue from non-paying readers is offset by subscriber revenue.

Judges on journalism & lawyers on blogging...
2009-07-24 00:41:00 While it's nice to know that Chicago's very own federal judge Richard Posner is a fan of newspapers, it's interesting to hear what he thinks will help save them. Here's what he blogged today on the future of newspapers: "Expanding copyright law to bar online access to copyrighted materials without the copyright holder's consent, or to bar linking to or paraphrasing copyrighted materials without the copyright holder's consent, might be necessary to keep free riding on content financed by online newspapers from so impairing the incentive to create costly news-gathering operations that news services like Reuters and the Associated Press would become the only professional, nongovernmental sources of news and opinion."...

Punkcoder reported good stuff that CTA Tweet retweeted immediately: "RT @punkcoder: @ctared Sbound trains redirected above ground due to an equipment failure. No word yet from #CTA: http://bit.ly/17eXi5"Just three minutes later we had details on the real reason why the Red Line subway was closed for more than two hours on a busy Saturday afternooon:"Confirmed: all @ctared trains rerouted to El tracks between Fullerton and Cermak-Chinatown due to a fire. Mobile phones vs. Telegrams: Journalism Morality Down the Ages
2009-07-09 14:31:00 Given Nick Davies’ story alleging mass mobile phone-hacking by journalists, it might perhaps be instructive to look back at the journalistic morals of another age. Here, by way of example, is ‘Journalism and Morality’ by Silas Bent, published in 1926 in The Atlantic (and quoted in Can You Trust The Media?). Note especially - towards the ...

The redundant story: math and the future of journalism
2009-06-01 17:27:00 I have long argued the rather unoriginal position that journalism’s mission to inform has its roots in religious ‘infotainment’ both popular and intellectual - moralising editorials replaced moralising sermons, etc. But I’ve been struggling to express why that mission seems such a recurrent trope in history. The use of stories for entertaining and moral purposes is clear ...

Obama: justifying a news media bailout?
2009-05-11 11:23:00 If you wondered about the US government and the news media, and the possibility - the hint, flicker, barest glimmer - of some kind of bailout, then listen to the last few humourless minutes of Barack Obama's speech to the White House press corps (it's from 2'50" in on the clip below). Is he merely playing to the gallery? Or is he providing the intellectual justification for future action? Or am I simply indulging my journalistic passion for over-interpretation?

2008-11-20 11:24:00 Things don't look so good.Fisk is a great writer, and even where I disagree with his POV, his analysis is generally right on the money. He's one of our finest foreign correspondents writing in English today. The Taliban are winning, at least in Kandahar. The Afghan "Army" leaves the Kandahar streets by 4 PM every day. The Afghan Police are lethargic and barely even check passengers anymore at the Kandahar Airport.Everyone is against the occupation and the extremely corrupt and shitty Afghan government, but no one will say a word against the Taliban.Ominously, there are rumblings that indicate that forces other than the Taliban, such as the Taliban's old enemies, may also take up arms against "the foreign occupiers" soon. Fighting the foreign infidel occupiers. Free Speech via Journalism Equals Democracy
2008-07-12 19:33:00 Bill Moyers, in his speech to the audience at the National Conference on Media Reform,"Democracy without honest information creates the illusion of popular consent at the same time that it enhances the power of the state and the privileged interests that the state protects. And nothing characterizes corporate media today more than its disdain toward the fragile nature of modern life and its indifference toward the complex social debate required of a free and self-governing people."Journalism can make or break a democracy. In the swirl surrounding the events of September 11, 2001, was there any debate, or simply a lying down and a dogged acceptance of the established line, spoon-fed from the current administration? We desperately need media reform, as some outing of the truth from the perpe-traitors.For more on media reform, see StopBigMedia.com

2008-06-14 03:54:00 Updated June 18:We've just passed 1,600 visitors a day for the past week, even though I haven't posted much. Everybody local I talk to thinks this blog is some kind of a joke, but according to The Truth Laid Bear, it is in the top 1,500 blogs on the Internet. That's out of over 90 million blogs. It's true that TTLB doesn't count them all, but still...Everybody seems to think it's simple to get 1,500 visitors/day traffic. Tell you what. Go for it. Go make yourself a blog and see how long it takes you to get up to 1,500 visitors/day. It took me 3 1/2 years of hard, painstaking work.I may try to get on with BlogAds. At that kind of traffic, you might start making a little bit. You really need over 1,000/day and a tightly focused blog to get any significant ads at all. Problem with this blog is it is not that tightly focused. I had an advertiser, but he wanted $25/month and I told him to walk. At this point, I probably want something like $60/month or so, or maybe even more.Unless...

Problems of Democracy Under Capitalism
2008-06-11 07:13:00 Updated June 18:I've always been opposed to public dishonesty, which is one of my problems with Communist states. They lied about so many things that now even when they tell the truth, people figure that "All Communists lie," so they are unlikely to be believed even when they are honest. You get a "boy who cried wolf" syndrome.Well, capitalists are pretty much the same. Almost all capitalists will always lie to defend their own interests. That is why whenever a businessman or business interest is quoted in the paper on some controversial issue, they are almost always lying. So it seems that in order to be a businessman in capitalist society, one must lie continuously. There are cultures, such as Arab, Japanese, Thai and Filipino culture, where lying is definitely a state of art. American society proscribes all lying as evil, and your average American will tell you that he never lies. The Japanese mindset, which I subscribe to, is, "Only an idiot never tells a lie."So there is a time...

More Evidence of Poor Journalism At The Morning Call
2008-05-29 21:18:00 The caption of a photograph (pictured left) featured on MCall.com that was released by the Whitehall Township Police Department reads, "Surveillance camera image of suspect allegedly using a stolen credit card on May 15 at Best Buy on MacArthur Road in Whitehall Township." The reporting was done by Tracy Jordan of The Morning Call.Sorry TMC, but that picture is not from Best Buy, it's from The Sports Authority. The pitiful efforts continued in the report with the misspelling of Whitehall, which was spelled "Whitewall."I am by no means a master of grammar or spelling, but I'm not a dominating news source either. This is just another example of poor journalism from the crew at The Morning Call. Don't be surprised if the errors are corrected without being noted.UPDATE: At 11:25 PM, the report is still erroneous. I doubt it will be changed.

The death of journalism, part 2
2008-05-29 19:47:00 I remarked yesterday here about the supposed death of journalism and how I’m not all wrapped up in it. I decided that perhaps a personal perspective is required to exaplin myself; Me at OTB yesterday: -1- You may or may not know I used to work in radio, from the early 70’s to about 1987. Certainly, there was a mystique, an aura of ‘public service’ etc to the profession. And on air folks used to get huge amounts of money for their services. When I was growing up, and getting my chops together, there was a bunch of people I later on in life got to work with, who I greatly respected; they were the local greats around these parts. I was honored to work along side these people who I grew up listening to. I won’t bother mentioning their names, you wouldn’t know most of them, and this thing’s going to get too long as it is. One of them even got to be one of the best freinds I ever had in the world, and I miss him terribly today. They all told the s...

Journalism ?
2008-05-28 12:18:00 Every time I see stories like this I begin to wonder whether or not the author is still Sane. Admittedly those thoughts, disappear a little more quickly when James Joyner is involved, but I have to tell you that I’m getting really, really tired of .the whining about the supposed demise of journalism. Nobody making any of these arguments seems to understand what Matt Drudge understood so very clearly when he started his website, back in the day; Here’s the thing; Journalism, as such, is merely a way to sell printed pages, regardless of what they’re printed on, including photons, hopefully being a way to attract attention to advertisers within the pages, so that the owners of the printing press can make some money. That’s it. Period, end of story. Any higher aspirations for journalism is naught but pretense. anyone who thinks otherwise will doubtless respond to me here with a long diatribe about journalistic ethics, which I have always considered to be a cont...

The Morning Call Continues With Poor Journalism
2008-05-20 06:02:00 After a week full of crime and murder, Allentwon Mayor Ed Pawlowski gave a ridiculous presentation to some members of the Kiwanis Club (not all of whom are Allentown residents) at a Denny's Restaurant. I hope he at least left a tip this time... The Mayor claims that the city is headed in the right direction, but that's not what this blog is about. I'm writing to further point out the piece of shit article by Paul Muschick of The Morning Call. The Morning Call teamed up with Muhlenberg College and conducted a poll of just 405 people, which is about the minimum needed for it to be deemed "credible." It's no secret that The Morning Call wrote an article favoring Pawlowski and once again failed to report the complete truth. The poll was poorly conducted and shouldn't be held "credible" by any means whatsoever. Pawlowski is in a world of his own and The Morning Call loves to make it appear as reality.Dottie, Michael, and Bernie have all already voiced their opinions and now I'm goi...

Blogging and Journalism, Like Art and Porn
2008-05-16 23:39:00 People often ask me what I do and when I tell them, they say “oh, you’re a blogger.” Ahem. Let me say that again. I write for a company that publishes several ebusiness publications, but mainly for just the flagship. But don’t confuse me with what is typically thought of as a blogger. I use the shift key and punctuation. Generally, I write with complete sentences unless I can justify it artistically. My grammar–on the first go ’round–is often impeccable, as is my spelling. I have standards, a background, degrees, certifications. I am a writer, and I am stuck-up about it. And sometimes I blog, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Yes, I did begin a sentence with a conjunction. Want to make something of it? But I don’t consider myself, not full time anyway, a blogger. Anyone can blog; not everybody has something to say. What’s the difference between being a writer and a blogger? That’s a tough question. Seem...

You call that journalism?
2008-05-13 01:26:00 Tim Eberly of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution really needs to learn some journalism basics: A 24-year-old man shot and killed a teenage intruder Friday after the youth and some other juveniles tried to break into the his northwest Atlanta home, police said. The shooting occurred around 1:15 p.m. at 1426 Hawkins St., off Chappell Road, police said. The victim was 16 years old, said Lt. Keith Meadows, commander of the Atlanta Police Department homicide unit. His name was not made public Friday afternoon. Let’s do a little basic editing.  The victim of the crime was the home owner.  The decedent, was not the victim. He was the perp, now a dead perp. The age of the decedent, perp, is simply not relevant. The home owner, defender, had neither the time nor the obligation to check the perp’s age before defending his property. CNN's John King Uses Journalism To Express Racial Opinion
2008-04-28 04:58:00 CNN's John King is a normally steady hand at reporting, but this night he took a wrong turn into a discussion for which he could not be objective, but uses the cover of reporting objectivity to make an emotional and disagreeable point. He did this in the AC/360 Blog post he wrote, and I've linked to here. This is the response I wrote there: I think the main problem is that the "process" of hearing what Rev. Wright says has been so distorted that some people -- not all -- tune out what he's saying after the original sound-bites have been aired. I think both John King and Merle Black are very guilty of this "myopic hearing" if you will. John, for actively seeking out someone who's Black to do John's talking for him, and Mr. Black, who's the willing participant in that process. This covers up the real need to hear not just what Rev. Wright has said, but who also said it. Let's take 9-11: anyone who looks at our history without blinders knows that Somalia was the birthplac...
