Google Gets Its Hands Dirty In Kenya
2012-01-17 08:45:00
Google has been trying to get small and medium businesses to go online as part of its worldwide initiative. We have covered the ‘India get your business online’ initiative in the country. Well, things went awry in Kenya where Google runs a similar initiative. Mocality is a Kenyan business which collects, lists and verifies local Kenyan businesses and also gives incentives to those who list accurate data on it. This crowd-sourced approach has worked for Mocality as it has managed to accurately list 1,70,000 businesses. They started noticing some calls from customers who were apparently confused about the fact that Mocality doesn’t offer a free website like Getting Kenyan Businesses Online (GKBO). Wondering what this was all about, the Mocality team did some detective work and were astonished by what they saw. Google employees were accessing Mocality’s database and calling their customers. These calls were being made on false information like Google was working with Mocal...

So why did the West push for South Sudan's independence?
2011-07-10 14:52:00
75% of the oil reserve in Sudan, perhaps 6.5 billion barrels, is located in South Sudan (Source). Since the "second" Sudan war between the North and South started in 1983, an estimated 2 million civilians were killed, and at least 4 million were displaced at least once. During the war, aid agencies set up one of the largest, most costly and complex humanitarian relief operations ever, "Operation Lifeline Sudan", running a "relief pipeline" from Kenya (and partially Uganda) into the South.... About reforestation and conservation farming in Meru Kenya
2010-10-17 12:20:00
Today we did our last interviews in the neighbourhood of Meru, right under Mount Kenya. Every single interview reveals new material, lets us discover new angles, and stories. More over, every single moment, we meet beautiful people, with a spank in their eye and stories to tell. I have been amazed how little problem people have to stand in front of a camera team and start talking. Shows how proud they are of their work. A couple of pictures from today's trip: Edward is a retired... Full post on www.theroadtothehorizon.org
Second day of farmer interviews in Kenya
2010-10-17 12:20:00
Today, we did a second row of interviews in Emru Kenya, trying to understand how farmers cope with climate change. We interviewed Ruth, a widow who was looking after her grandchildren, trying to find inventive ways to adapt to the shorter rainy season. I told her my first girlfriend was called Ruth too. She teased me "You should have married her, why did you not?". I felt privileged to spend several hours with Celeste, with a blessed age of 88, and his wife Julia. They proudly... Mobile phones for farmers in Africa: Myth or reality?

My first trip to Africa, goes back to 1994: Angola in the midst of the civil war. I "left" the continent end 1999, moving from Uganda to Kosovo. Through my five years in Africa, I travelled extensively throughout. I was a first-hand witness of the the mobile phone networks rolling out in different countries. From the old AMPR system and 2 kg mobile phone/walkie talkie bricks in Congo (then Zaire), to the new generation MTN-types using the latest technology, huge bandwidths, and connectivity... Bharti Airtel – All Set to Lead in Kenya
2010-08-25 11:44:00
The one thing in business which is of paramount importance is – Market Leadership. And, it is of strategic sense when a company tries to do that in Africa. WATBlog was one of the first in Digital Media space to report that Bharti Airtel inked the Zain deal. With this deal through, Bharti under its group company Zain Kenya is planning to invest US $ 308 Million in the next 18 months to reach to the top of the Mobile Services provider in Kenya. To add on, another surprise is that this expected investment into Zain Kenya is approximately double of what was initially planned by Bharti. Rene Meza, Managing Director – Zain Kenya, was excited on this investment plan and shared his feelings when he told Requters, “For the first time in eight years, we have the right majority shareholders with the understanding and the mindset of what it takes for us to do in Kenya, to become market leaders“. This news has already shook their rivals Safaricom, which is the biggest te...
