Kevin Fowler ? ?Beer Season?
2009-09-17 19:50:00
Texas country rocker Kevin Fowler trades Bambi for Budweiser, hunting for Heineken and ammo for Amstel on his new single ?Beer Season,? a catchy, silly song that is refreshingly fun for the sake of being fun. Unlike current chart-topping ?good time? songs that are so calculated and slickly produced (think Craig Morgan?s ?Bonfire? or Brooks and ...

2007-10-19 19:06:00
Concluding our post-event coverage of the 2007 Big State Country Music Festival, here is the second half of my weekend wrap-up. Sunday: Colin Gilmore, 11:15. The son of Texas icon Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Colin played to a small but very enthusiastic crowd at the BMI stage. Admittedly, I only had chance to stick around for about ...
And The Bands Played On: Big State Festival Day Two
2007-10-17 00:59:00
Kelly Willis and The Wrights were on the brink of starting their 12:30 sets when we arrived at the festival grounds on Sunday. Writing the Saturday wrap-up kept us from showing up earlier to watch Colin Gilmore and Ashley Ray. Our famished stomachs led us straight to the nearest food while we half-heartedly listened to ...

Musician, novelist, and former Texas gubernatorial hopeful Kinky Friedman talked to Nashville Scene about…politics. Who’d a thunk it? Along with Billy Joe Shaver these two guys could crank out some pretty lofty books of quotes. Rolling Stones‘ Top 15 cheating songs as chosen by their readers. Toby Keith scored his 23rd number 1 on the country singles ...
September ?07 Album Review Wrap-Up
2007-10-01 02:02:00
Due to time constraints we don’t get to give a proper review to every album we would like to, so we decided to begin a weekly wrap-up of the albums we’ve had a chance to listen to along with our brief opinion and a rating. We’re kicking off this feature with a list of albums ...

Houston Press ranks the 10 worst songs to ever come out of Houston. Both Kenny Rogers and Clint Black make the list for “You Decorated My Life” and “I Raq and Roll” (which sounds horrible from the title alone). Both artists also make The Houston 100, a list of Houston’s top songs ever. The list ...
Help Lonestar Beer Pick A New Unofficial ?National Anthem of Texas?
2007-09-19 16:20:00
Out of all the songs he’s written, the music he’s made, and the few movies he’s performed in Lyle Lovett says his greatest joy and accomplishment is rescuing the land that his family sold to developers in the ’80s. Two police officers have been fired and may spend up to a year in jail after they ...
Lonestar Names Their New Fearless Leader?I Mean Lead Singer
2007-09-13 15:24:00
In his Nickel Creek concert review Chuck Hinton says “Assuming they avoid the many pitfalls of young stardom, the sky is the limit for these fledgling troubadours.” Has anyone come across Digital Rodeo yet? I just came across it and haven’t had a chance to properly explore, but it looks like a nicely designed social ...

In the wake of Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner says he never had the desire to go beyond what he is–a good country singer and a good country songwriter. The Wall Street Journal on Wagoner: Porter Wagoner has been, very arguably, the most significant, surprising, emotionally penetrating country music performer of the past 50 ...

The Big Rock Candy Mountain Top 100 Drinking Songs is down to the top ten drinking songs of any genre. George Jones and Loretta Lynn made the cut. Charlie Robison And Kevin Fowler Return From Iraq And Indie Labels Are Chan
2007-04-16 15:51:00
Tim McIntire directed me towards a superb article about the rise of indie labels in Nashville and how they’re changing the game. Light feet, more frugal approaches to recording, solid distribution channels, and the proliferation of Web-based marketing have all dovetailed nicely for the new Nashville indies. All of which translates to a faster return for ...
The Merle Haggard Movie And Kevin Fowler?s Rodeo Headlining Debut
2007-02-02 23:04:02
Merle Haggard has joined Willie Nelson in promoting the benefits of Biodiesel and will be performing at their National Biodiesel Conference & Expo. In an article from MySA.com Haggard also discusses his album with Jones, his tour with Willie & Ray, and a current autobiographical movie that he’s been working on with Robert Duvall. Miranda gets a less than glowing review from the New York Times, asking if her career has progressed backwards. Want to know how Kevin Fowler faired during his headlining debut at the San Antonio rodeo? John Goodspeed has you covered. After three songs, though, they settled into the saddle, and Fowler put the spurs to a memorable performance that had couples dancing in the aisles and thousands screaming lyrics to such songs as ?Loose, Loud & Crazy? and ?Beer, Bait and Ammo,? his redneck anthem most recently covered by Country Music Hall of Fame member George Jones. If you find yourself without anything better to do on Valentine̵...

One of the regulars readers of The 9513, Matt C., was at the Colgate Country Showdown yesterday and gave us the scoop on what happened: The winner of the 25th Annual Colgate Country Showdown is Shelby, NC native Megan Peeler. Megan sang Waylon Jennings’ “The Wurlitzer Prize” and an original song entitled “Damsel in Distres.” While there was a lot of talent on stage, Megan was clearly better than the rest and the judges made the right decision. The program was taped for a screening on GAC at a later date but I?ll post comments sometime tomorrow for those interested. C3 Presents, a new company in Austin born out of the merger between two companies and the former president of another, is producing Austin City Limits Music Festival and a new country music festival at Texas Motor Speedway near College Station. The country music festival will take place in October. I can’t seem to find any more information about the festival, so it’ll be interest...
