My counterargument: Principal Steve Perry wants Obama kids to go to public
2009-11-01 06:20:00 CNN featured Principal Steve Perry on "Black in America" Part 2 President Barack H. Obama voluntarily ran for the President of the United States of America, but I don't see one piece of documentation stating that Sasha and Malia Obama had to be the guinea pigs for public school education. However, tonight on CNN's "Black Men in the Age of President Obama," Dr. Steve Perry discussed Obama's decision to not send his daughters to a public school with CNN news anchor Don Lemon. And while I respect Principal Steve Perry, of Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut, for what he's done for his students, I disagree. Principal Perry was featured on CNN's "Black in America" Part 2, and his...
My Kids and the H1N1 Vaccination
2009-10-22 02:17:00 The CDC is now calling H1N1 a disease of children. This information combined with what I already know about H1N1 caused me to call that 24 hour health department line to make appointments for my kids to get the nasal vaccine. Since only the nasal spray is currently being offered at the health departments and since H1N1 has already infiltrated, and it will take about two weeks for the vaccine to take effect, I'm moving ahead......

Indian Kids Turn The iPhone Into A Joystick – Impress The Judges At T
2009-09-23 06:14:00 Being pretty young myself Ive been a firm believer that technology innovation is going to be driven by the youth in India. I have this statement that I make to VC’s often. I say the Mark Zuckerberg of India is 14 years old right now. What I mean is that he is right now playing with Xbox and fooling around with the iPhone and by the time he is 18 or 19 years old he would be kicking ass when it comes to building products on these platforms. Dont believe me? Check the video below: The video above shows a two people startup which applied to Techcrunch 50 and also won the best presentation award. Himanshu Baweja who earlier worked with minekey as a software engineer is a Delhi based boy. His company details can be found on their website. As the video above shows iMO has used software both on the iPhone and on the PC side to convert the iPhone into a joystick for PC games. This is just the start as the opportunity for this kind of application of touch devices is endless and they c...

2009-09-21 15:02:00 Letās all face it. Halloween is one event that the kids look forward to for all the fun and excitement it brings. This year (2009), you can do even more by giving the little ones Halloween coloring pages for kids! The delights Halloween brings to kids are boundless. With this new addition, you not only bring the event more color, you let your kids color. Creating Super Human Kids
2009-09-21 12:30:00 As our toddler is approaching the 2nd year of life (terrible twos?), we have been contemplating various school systems and activities. We have thought about educational day cares, Montessori schools, ballet, Karate, piano, French immersion, swimming, soccer and the list goes on. Stepping back and looking at the big picture, I have to think about what is the purpose of all these extra curricular activities. Iād like to think that we doing what is best for our children. However, if you look a bit closer, are we simply training a super human kid? Are we, as parents, compensating for what we didnāt have as children? Perhaps we want our offspring to look better than the next kid? In addition to the purpose of over stimulating our kids, these extra curricular activities are big business and can cost a lot of money. For example, I just found out that our area is about to get its first Montessori school which is a new age way for toddlers to learn. Iām all for optimal learning...

Why Do The Girls Always Get The Crappy End Of The Deal?
2009-09-17 12:17:00 I was helping R. get ready for school the other day. She was tired and not very motivated. I grabbed her clothes and told her I would help her get dressed."Why are you getting me dressed?" She asked."Well, you seem to need a little help this morning."She began to wiggle and be less than cooperative as I tried to put her dress over her head."C'mon R.! Mommy's getting too old for this!"She giggled."That's funny?" I giggled back. "Will you let me come live with you when I'm really old?""Yes, mommy!!""You might have to help ME get dressed." I said."I will!"Suddenly I heard T. shout from his bedroom, "Mom, you can come live with me!""Awwwww!" I thought to myself. My boy loves his mama!"Really, T.? I can? You'll take care of me? Make me dinner? Take me to doctor's appointments? Help me find my teeth?"He laughed and said, "YES!!""You'll even change my diaper?"Silence."You know what? You can go live with R."

Geodesic has recently announced the launch of Chanamama in Kannada, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi languages. Family Grounds Cafe: At the Intersection of Kids and Coffee
2009-09-13 21:30:00 Wouldn't it be great if there were a place where you could get a hazelnut latte and a cranberry-orange scone and actually sit down in a chair and enjoy it while your toddler or preschooler got to play dress up, build a block tower or just run around screaming like the crazy kid that he is?Well, there is such a place. It is called Family Grounds Cafe. This Lakeview kids-meets-coffee establishment was recently opened by a local family with three children of their own. This family saw the need for a place that gave both parents and kids what they were looking for. It is like a cross between Starbucks and the play area at McDonald's -- except that it...

Studying Woes
2009-09-10 15:43:00 It's only one week into the new school year and I'm frazzled. W. has now entered the 6th grade. He's playing with the big kids now.W. is naturally smart. He received 4 A's and 1 B as his average grades, in his primary subjects, last year. He didn't put in a whole lot of effort. I did...but he, unfortunately isn't one to go above and beyond. If it's not fun, he doesn't want to do it.Studying and homework can be a battle. It's frustrating because with even the slightest bit of elbow grease, he'd really do exceptionally well. But his philosophy has been, "Why bother? I do well enough this way."And yes, he does. I'm not a stickler for grades. I, of course, want my children to do well. This world requires that if you want to live comfortably in adulthood. But I am not one to insist on straight A's or face my wrath. I just want you to do the best that you can.And I know he CAN do better. He CAN break a sweat once in a while. Because everything comes to him so easily, he's gott...
Tricks aren't just for Kids at Vale Craft Gallery
2009-09-10 04:38:00 Review by Claire Haasl Steve Rebora's Magic Show inserts a bit of humor into the gallery scene this Friday, so if you're looking for a not-so-serious exhibition make sure to stop in at the Vale Craft Gallery in River North. There you will be greeted by multiple hat-box-sized wooden sculptures of a "magic" rabbit who pops out of a magician's hat all on his own. The rabbit, Rebora states, "represents such a twist" because he is no longer the subject of the trick and has become the magician. These light-hearted sculptures may also represent Rebora's own joy in becoming the artist...
Canadian Bank Accounts for Kids
2009-09-09 12:30:00 A few years ago we took the kids down to our local RBC and signed them up for a Leo Account. I did some online research to find out which Canadian bank offered the best bank accounts for kids. They were all so similar that no single bank was a clear winner. The only incentive at the time was with Royal Bank who offered a bank tour which ended in the vault. There each child would find 5 loonies in a safety deposit box to start out their accounts. I was really impressed with the level of service we received. The kids were treated like VIPs through the whole process and they came out feeling valued and excited to start their financial journey. When I began doing the research for this post, I was disappointed to find Royal Bank had discontinued this incentive. I even called them directly to confirm that they no longer offered it. If I were choosing again today, I would choose one of the banks that offered unlimited debits. Debit use isnāt a huge issue yet for my kids but Iāve...
Say 'Ello to My Little Friend
2009-09-07 06:24:00 R. can NOT keep a secret. This comes in quite handy for me, as I can't always be the fly on the wall, watching all that my children do.I can always count on my daughter to spill the beans because she likes to talk and talk and talk. Our best friends have a set of twins that are six years old. The boy, L. and my T. are the closest of buddies. And the girl, S., and R. are BFFL.Recently, out of the blue, R. said to me, "Mom, did you know that L.'s best friend is his weinis?""WHAT?!""Yes, his best friend is his weinis! S. told me so!"Oh boy."What made S. say that?""Yesterday she asked L. to show me and T. his best friend......."OH.GOD.HERE.IT.CO-MES"....and he pulled down his zipper and showed us his weinis!"She then giggled.Fantastic.So, I had the privacy talk with T. and R. again. I tried not to make a big deal out of it because I know kids are just being kids. They thought it was funny. They were kind of right. But now I had to tell my best friend."E. now don't get upset, I don't wa...

Your kids are invited to Oprah's 24th season kickoff party in Chicago
2009-09-07 03:25:00 Usually Oprah isn't for kids. For typical show tapings, audience members must be at least 16 years-old. And sometimes the subject matter on Oprah shows isn't so kid-friendly either. But the usual adults-only rules don't apply for Oprah's big season 24 kickoff party taking place on Michigan Avenue on Tuesday, September 8. Everyone is invited -- even your kids. The show itself promises to be "all ages" as well. Let the kids have 15 minutes
2009-09-03 14:56:00 It's a sunny and just flat out beautiful Wednesday afternoon in early September, and here I am stuck in a high school auditorium, awaiting for a 17 year old kid to "announce" his college verbal decision. Now I know many of you are thinking. Why? Why do 17 year old athletes get to call press conferences and why do all of us media types flock to these events?I'm not sure about the other media types, but covering recruiting is my job. Whether right or wrong, good or bad, I work in an industry and for a company that takes this recruiting stuff very seriously. So at times I need to go sit and cover these media events, like it or not....

Kids Sue Mom for Emotional Distress
2009-08-27 22:42:00 Two adult children are suing their biological mother for intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress that they say occurred over a period of more than 14 years. Steven A. Miner II is 21 years old and Kathryn R. Miner is 18. Together, they are suing their mother Kimberly A. Garrity in a complaint that details years of alleged mistreatment, including the following: - Garrity will invite one child to an event without inviting the other. - Garrity would purchase things for Kathryn without purchasing anything for Steven. - Garrity offered to provide college financial assistence to Steven and not Kathryn. - Garrity did not provide Christmas or birthday gifts to Steven from 1996 through 2005 or Kathryn in 2007. - When...
Kids should not drive cars
2009-08-24 23:04:00 Children under the age of eighteen should not get behind the wheel of a car without adult supervision. A new law currently in committee will establish minimum federal requirements for state laws regarding Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) and encourage all states to adopt such laws that meet those minimum requirements within 3 years. Why is this necessary? Car crashes are the leading cause of death among American teenagers. By the summer of my senior year in high school, I’d lost three friends to car accidents. As a high school teacher, I lost many more. * From 1994 to 2003, a total of 57,142 teenagers were killed in motor vehicle crashes. * Teenage drivers account for only 6.4 percent (12.5 million) of the total drivers in the United States, but account for 14 percent of all drivers involved in fatal crashes and 18 percent involved in police-reported crashes. * No other kind of hazard comes close to claiming as many teenage lives, including teenage homicides (14 percent) and ...

Take your kids to a "preview" of the Air and Water Show
2009-08-14 01:08:00 Photograph used via Creative Commons license. The Chicago Air and Water Show takes place this weekend. Kids love this stuff -- F-15's, Apache helicopters, Coast Guard boats, and of course the Thunderbirds. Unfortunately, logistical limitations make this event less than kid-friendly. The reality is that most families won't even get anywhere near the action at North Avenue Beach because of traffic and crowds....

Lolla '09 review: Cold War Kids
2009-08-10 01:59:00 5:30 p.m. Vitamin Water stageHow can you tell if a crowd is having a good time? By the body surfing! At least that's according to Cold War Kids' singer Nathan Willett, who mused it must be "1993" when, like, Jane's Addiction was headlining. Good one. The four piece indie rockers from California kept the crowd clap-happy, especially with an energetic set that included faves such as "Hospital Beds" and "Hang Me Up To Dry," as well as a new song titled "Santa Ana Winds." This is the third time around at Lolla for the band, and it doesn't seem as if the fans are getting tired. "I wouldve paid $200 just for that," one fan said after the set.-- Dorothy...

2009-08-07 00:48:00 I keep reading about the health benefits of omega-3 essential fatty acids, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). In other words, fish. These omega-3's found in fish and fish oils are being said to help the developing brains of children. There are also claims that they help in behavior issues, such as; ADHD and OCD. In adults, cold-water species of fish, such as salmon, halibut and tuna can help prevent neurodegenerative diseases. It's also great for the heart! We don't eat a lot of fish. For one reason, right now, it's extremely expensive. The second? I'm not a huge lover of it and neither are my kids.We enjoy the occasional flounder. We've even tried wild turbot. But frankly, that's about it.But who doesn't want a smart kid? And I would definitely like a hand in the ADHD tendencies that my oldest exhibits. Also, I ain't getting any younger...so keeping the old ticker beating is really a priority for me.Plus, I sometimes fall for the current hype or tren...
