Five Reasons Not To Go To Law School
2011-03-29 15:44:00
Yesterday, I shared some good reasons to spend the time, energy and money on a law school education. But it's not worth it for everyone. Here are five reasons to consider a different career. 1.     -;  It's going to be hard to find a job. This is true for the majority of people graduating from law school these days. Some people - the top students - will probably get job offers. For many, it's not going to come easy. The bad economy affects lawyers, too. Not many firms are hiring, and there are experienced lawyers out there applying for the same jobs. 2.     -;  It's not going to make you rich. I don't have any statistics on what the "average" lawyer...
An "American" Law School In China. Explanations Sought.
2009-08-16 18:34:00
My tiny firm must receive at least ten resumes every day. About a third of these come from students who, even in the best of of times, would likely never be hired as a law firm associate. Go ahead and get mad at me if you want, but those who are in the bottom half of the class from fourth tier ranked or unaccredited law schools are just not going to get hired by a law firm without exceptional circumstances. The United States is producing way more lawyers than jobs. I do not have the numbers on this, but I KNOW this to be true. Just ask Loyola 2L. And yet (usually with self-generated fanfare) new law schools just keep on coming. Why? I could talk about college presidents wanting to extend their fiefdom (and that would be true), but what it really comes down to is that law schools tend to be very profitable. I thought of all this today when I read an excellent article on the USC US-China Institute's website, entitled, "China Legal." The article is on Peking University's new...

Quitting Law School

I’m not actually quitting law school but the idea is somewhat tempting. I can’t say I’m enjoying law school at all. At this point I feel like I have too much time and money invested to quit though. I’m hoping that once I do some actual legal work this summer that I will like it. ...

What Law School Rankings Don't Say ......
2008-04-16 13:20:00
This is a very interesting article from Law.com discussing what law school rankings don't say about this life altering and very expensive decision.During the last three decades, the size and geographic dispersion of the global economy has dramatically increased the demand for sophisticated corporate legal services. In contrast, the demand for personal-services legal work -- wills and estates, personal injury, family law, simple business contracts, etc. -- has grown at roughly the rate of population growth. These dynamics have resulted in a "bimodal" income distribution, in which there is a heavy concentration of salaries in two distinct ranges, based on salary figures provided by NALP. At the high end are the large corporate firm starting salaries that so interest the media. In 2006, salaries in the largest firms in major markets jumped from $125,000 to $135,000 to $145,000. Thus out of 22,684 starting salaries reported for 2006, 4,809, or 21.2 percent, were in the $125...

Coming To A Law School Near You: The Upcoming Merger of Counterterrorism a
2008-04-08 05:46:00
Doug Farah’s recent post about our complacency in dealing with the problem that is Saudi Arabia dovetails well with one of my pet causes: showing that counterterrorism and human rights go hand in hand. That our most reliable social critics (and multilateralists) are refusing to condemn the deplorable human rights record of much of the Arab world, I have argued, is a symptom of partisan politics and an eagerness to find fault with what we are doing in counterterrorism. The same thing is happening...(read more)

Tuition-Free Law School for Activists? Am I Dreaming? No. It's Real.
2008-01-16 06:02:00
It's not a dream.  It's not a fantasy.  At first blush this may be no different then full boat scholarships at other law schools, but this one really does smell different.  Scholarship at the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law in Washington, D.C. is based upon your commitment to advocacy and justice and has a highly diverse student body including ethnicity, age, and real-world experience.  It is clinic-centered and filled with practicing attorneys. As most of you likely know well, many would-be public interest legal careers founder on the sharp rocks of law school debt. Pressed to pay back huge loans, many talented law graduates opt for the highest available paycheck. And, seeing this dynamic, many other talented POTENTIAL law students, who are committed to the fight for justice, are deterred from even seeking a legal education. To address this dilemna, the UDC David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC-DCSL) has embarked upon an ambitious plan to raise sufficient funds t...

A Law School Career Counseling Office Making Housecalls?
2008-01-05 15:02:00
This initiative really impressed me.  Imagine if your law school career counseling officer came to visit you after graduation to see how you were doing and to see how they may be of further assistance in your efforts to find employment?  Wouldn't that be impressive? Well, in Iowa that is just what they are doing.  Hat tip to Ed Wiest for alerting me to this article.University of Iowa College of Law alumni who can't quite figure out what to do next with their careers should sit tight because UI officials will come to them. The law school has a fairly new program where an official from the college travels across Iowa and around the country to meet face-to-face with graduates to help them re-assess their careers. "This is part of a bigger picture of what we are trying to develop, thinking about the admission process all the way through alumni life about how students think about and act on career choices," said Steve Langerud, the college's associate dean ...
Do You Really Know Why Your Law School Ranks Where It Does?
2007-12-07 06:02:00
Law School Groupie, a soon-to-be law student blogging about the process, resurrects a New York Times archival piece exposing the real truth about law school rankings and how law schools can distort the rankings through tricks and maneuverings which mislead students.  Groupie analyzed the NYT piece so well I will give him or her the honors.  You can read the blog post here. Or if you want to go right to the New York Times piece it is called The $8.78 Million Dollar Maneuver. Some highlights:I had no idea that U.S. News & World Reports' (USNWR) rankings had anything to do with the school's expenditure per student, but this NYT article breaks it down for us.These student expenditures affect only 1.5 percent of a school's U.S. News ranking, but this is a competition where fractions of a point matter. The University of Illinois College of Law provides students with access to Westlaw and LexisNexis, paying $75,000 to $100,000 for those services. No Practical Training at Your Law School? Blame the ABA. Guest Blogger -
2007-12-07 06:02:00
Long time Build A Solo Practice reader, Edward Weist, is a solo in Massachussetts and a Harvard Law School graduate. He wrote such a terrific comment to my frequent challenges to law schools not offering practical training, I asked him if I could use his commentary as a guest post and he graciously agreed. It’s one thing to point out—as this blawg and others have done—that the U.S. News ranking system doesn’t tell prospective law students much about whether any law school will actually prepare them to practice, rather than merely learn, law.  I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for prospective customers to drive real change in law school curricula.  There are huge institutional constraints limiting the ability of the legal academy to provide any real introduction to the world their students—whether bound for BigLaw or a home office upon graduation—will enter upon graduation.  It will take more than agitation from applicants to drive real change.  A...

What is the Harvard Law School?
2007-11-15 15:35:00
Harvard Law School is one of the most high-status, if not the most prestigious, law schools in the United States. Thousands upon thousands of citizens apply to this school yearly only to get denied and sent a reply to try back next year. Lots of the most winning judges, politicians, and many more public figures have graduated from Harvard Law School. While Harvard Law School Admissions seems next to not possible to get into, that is not forever the case.  Getting into Harvard on the whole starts with High School. Grades have to be ideal. Other things like additional activities are very significant. At the same time as Harvard appreciates football and basketball, those are not the type of extracurricular activities they are looking for. They are looking for extracurricular activities such as a discuss team that wins conferences, a verbal communication club, and things that exercise the mind rather than the body.  Interviewing well is also another enormous thing for Harvard Law Scho...

Ave Maria Law School sued!
2007-10-19 16:59:00
Naughty little Catholic 1Ls. Ooops, wrong fetish. Naughty little law priests.Ave Maria Law School and its founder Tom Monaghan (who you probably know from Domino's Pizza), have been sued by their own faculty members. The press release reads like a thriller novel, complete with child porn, obstruction of justice, gay priests, and all the great things that make a little Jewish law student like me so happy. Three professors from Tom Monaghan's Ave Maria School of Law filed a multi-part complaint against Thomas Monaghan, Bernard Dobranski and associated entities in Washtenaw County Circuit Court on Oct. 17. Monaghan serves as Chair of the Board of Governors and Dobranski is the President and Dean. The three professors claim that they were removed from their positions in retaliation for their having reported illegal conduct by Monaghan and Dobranski to law enforcement and other governmental agencies, and for refusing to go along with Monaghan's attempts to improperly control the Board...

Study: Affirmative Action does NOT work in Law School
2007-10-16 19:46:00
Thanks to Fox News via AboveTheLaw.com. A recent study published by Stanford Law Review, authored by UCLA Law Professor Richard Sander says no, and demands that the California Bar release its data related to student test scores, law school admissions, and bar passage rates.According to the article: Currently only about one in three African-Americans who goes to an American law school passes the bar on the first attempt and a majority never become lawyers at all," says UCLA law professor Richard Sander. In an article published in the Stanford Law Review, Sander and his research team concluded several thousand would-be black lawyers either dropped out of law school or failed to pass the bar because of affirmative action.Sander's claim, the so-called "mismatch effect", is that students who are unprepared and whose academic credentials are below the median, under affirmative action, are admitted to law schools they are unqualified to attend. They then do poorly and do not graduate or pa...

Law School Essay
2007-10-02 13:09:00
There are hundreds of law schools throughout the USA and the UK. Each of them requires three years of a diligent study from the one struggling for a professional degree. Along with numerous examinations which law school students take, one form of checking their knowledge remains the same, we speak about law school essay.   Law school essay writing is characterized by impartial views of the writers and the students’ logic in presenting them. Moreover, law school essays are not a mere demonstration of one’s legal knowledge, but giving some profound and grounded evidence supporting it.   What should you do to write a successful law school essay? Attention: Law School is NOT for you
2007-09-30 23:02:00
Law school simply isn't for some people. For instance, if you feel the need to lecture a law professor who has been teaching and litigating for 30 years, in her own subject matter area when she's already announced that what you're talking about is not important, law school isn't for you. If you feel the need to start off almost ANY sentence in class with "In my experience...." or "When I did/was/worked at....", law school is not for you.If you feel that you don't need to stop your car when you are driving down Mass. Ave for the array of law students obviously crossing the road....law school and driving are not for you, and I keyed your car you disgusting bitch. If you work at Wagshals, and continue to repeatedly attempt to charge me higher than the listed price for my bagel and lox, law school is not for you, and neither is the english language or basic math. Law School Not A Ticket To Printing Money
2007-09-24 04:05:00
Here is a very sobering article from the Wall Street Journal's Emir Efrati which finally exposes through real numbers that law school graduates are not getting the promised jobs, the six-figure incomes or the professional prestige once associated with law school.  Law school is a low cost, high-return money maker for universities and they are luring students in with promises and not delivering the goods..except for the top few at the top tier schools.  On the supply end, more lawyers are entering the work force, thanks in part to the accreditation of new law schools and an influx of applicants after the dot-com implosion earlier this decade. In the 2005-06 academic year, 43,883 Juris Doctor degrees were awarded, up from 37,909 for 2001-02, according to the American Bar Association. Universities are starting up more law schools in part for prestige but also because they are money makers. Costs are low compared with other graduate schools and classrooms can be large. Since ...

Law School Ain't So Bad Nowadays
2007-09-07 19:23:00
The fangirls at 24 Headquarters have just reported that Georgetown Law will be offering a class called "The Law of '24'" in the spring of 2008. The course catalog elaborates:This course provides a detailed understanding of a very wide-range of U.S. domestic and international legal issues concerning counterterrorism in the context of the utilitarian and sometimes desperate responses to terrorism raised by the plot of 24. Course requirements include active classroom discussion and a paper of approximately 25 pages.I know people who have compared the law school experience to the Salem witch trials, but, with more classes like this, students will pretty soon be skating their way towards their law degrees. While we contemplate 24 at law school, I want to use this opportunity to remind you how absurd the Japanese can sometimes be. Just look at the above photo of a made-in-Japan 24 toy?Jack Bauer and...a metallic 24 bear!Um...what the fuck?!

Ways to maximize your law school experience - LAP Day 6 A.M.
2007-08-08 16:10:00
Today we are having a panel discussion on ways to improve in law school.--Points raised--It's a marathon. Don't burn yourself out. Don't overstudy or be paralyzed by fear into understudying.Don't pick one person in the class that's brilliant and constantly compare yourself to that person. Everyone is on their own track. Ask for help from your classmates. A lot of times they will help you approach things from an angle you didn't see before.Force yourself to be able to talk to your professors. Don't be intimidated by them. This is law school: they have a vested interest in you not failing. MOST law schools have extremely approachable professors.Don't take it personally if they don't have time to see you. That means they don't have time. Find out when they do have time and bring it up then.If you are going to litigate, get used to approaching authoritative figures like professors. In a few years, you'll be the lawyer and be approaching judges who are having bad days, but you...
