Trayvon Martin case: Lawyers want all records released
2012-05-17 17:23:00
The attorney for Trayvon Martin's parents is calling for the release of all of the documents related to the death of their son, rather than continue what he says are strategic leaks of records intended to benefit the defense of George Zimmerman, who is charged with killing Martin. Attorney Benjamin Crump said on Wednesday he ...
When lawyers get scammed

This isn’t about scummy lawyers scamming clients; it’s about con-artists scamming lawyers or at least trying to. It’s not a new scam, but it’s still circulating. So I wonder if it’s actually working on some people. Here’s how it works: A lawyer gets a vague email from someone looking... Read more »

Late last week a law suit was filed in the California Superior Court (LA County). Women who have experienced serious complications in the wake of surgery intended to repair pelvic organ prolapse using surgical mesh may be able to find advice and help from transvaginal mesh lawyers. Instances of patients who suffer pain and other complications following the surgery are not rare, according to the FDA web site. For cases of surgery involving transvaginal mesh lawyers who specialize in personal injury law may be able to provide patients with information and advice on how they should proceed. A number of brands of surgical mesh have been used in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and on the subject of transvaginal mesh lawyers may point out that the complications which can follow this use of surgical mesh have not been linked with any single brand. NCAA Responds To Boatright's Lawyers Statement
2012-01-29 21:49:00
Earlier on Sunday morning, the laywer for Tanesha Boatright, the mother of UConn Huskies freshman point guard Ryan Boatright, released a statement about the NCAA's release of personal info with their statement. Now the NCAA has once again responded turning this into a case of he said, she said. Here's the lastest statement from the NCAA: Scott Tompsett?s allegations are not accurate. The NCAA statement regarding Ryan Boatright is factual and in response to numerous public misstatements and the resulting inaccurate reporting by some media. The NCAA acted appropriately to ensure the misleading accounts did not continue. The NCAA did not violate the student-athlete or family?s privacy in anyway, nor did it imply that the benefits were used to influence Ryan Boatright to attend the University of Connecticut. In fact, both UConn and Boatright should be commended for their cooperation throughout the process to gather information. The school and student-athlete?s dedication to un...
DC COMICS VS TATTOOS
2012-01-13 18:00:00
In a pursuit that's almost too incredible to believe, lawyers representing the comic book pioneers over at DC Comics are actually handing out cease and desist notices to fans with tattooed art that they deem copyrighted material. The suits, apparently on call from Warner Bros. (DC's parent company), began handing out official notices while on the floor of the C2E2 convention in Chicago last month. And here's what they had to say about it:
This is the kind of thing that happens when lawyers are mommies.

Young Male Sex Abuse: International Legal Challenge Will Confront Key Sathy
2011-07-19 11:49:00
Those Sathya Sai Baba accomplices who have so grievously outraged the innocence of boys and young men over many years had best not underestimate the sheer punching power and international outreach of law firms now being consulted. I am assured that they are able, via their experience and alliances in South Asia, to sort out the sheep and the goats in the Indian legal system. Already some of Sathya Sai Baba's officials know ? to their considerable cost ? that three strong legal actions have already succeeded against them. It was unfortunate that, hitherto, these were settled out of court with mutual non-disclosure agreements. However, they should remember that there remain legal pathways ahead that they will not rejoice in facing. Those who wish to litigate or in other ways support legal actions against those who supported the years of homosexual abuse of boys and young men, and other abuses, can, with assurance of strict confidentiality contact my close and trusted colleague Rob...
On Sathya Sai Baba: Times of India, Ex-Chief Justice Interview. What Judge
2011-05-01 14:14:00
The sort of questions I'd like to be asking ex-Chief Justice of India, P.N. Bhagwati (I'll follow the present spelling), I have put in blue highlight. In his interview just conducted by the Times of India (on which he has long been a director, by the way), Bhagwati, about to head the late Sathya Sai Baba's Central Trust, makes a number of comments which cannot but alienate him from present and former Commonwealth judges, and, indeed, judges, lawyers and citizens far beyond. He says, for example, that for long, in writing his judgements, he has been receiving guidance from Sathya Sai Baba. The account he gives sounds very like automatic writing. If it was not, he needs to have been clear about what he means. Judges are meant to be clear, are they not? He also shows some disconcerting lapses (???) of memory. He clearly say that because Sathya Sai Baba is God, there is no need for investigation of any allegations.
Indian Lawyers Challenge Sathya Sai Baba?s Central Trust On Secrecy and Fou
2011-04-18 10:45:00
In the last days, there has fast emerged a major new turning point in the Sathya Sai saga. A climate is emerging in which Sai Baba devotee appointed lawyers are seriously looking at what their clients aver is the severe unaccountability of Puttparthi officialdom. See: Downturn In Sathya Sai Baba?s Condition (April 17th 2011) Posted by Barry Pittard on April 18, 2011 and Sathya Sai Devotees Suspect Foul Play In Guru?s Health Crisis. Seek Court Order Posted by Barry Pittard on April 16, 2011 These lawyers and their clients may pause to consider that networked former devotees have long spoken out about the extreme lack of accountability and duty of care in the international Sri Sathya Sai Organization. Indeed, some of these who have spoken up at great sacrifice to themselves and families were previously prominent leaders highly respected down the many years in which they served Sathya Sai Baba and his international organization. Ill. Dem. Senate Candidate Raising $$ From Trial Lawyers in Canada
2010-07-13 23:07:00
-By Warner Todd Huston The Illinois Democrat candidate for Senate, Alexi Giannoulias, wasn't too keen of admitting it but he was in Vancouver, Canada over the weekend at a fund-raiser at a trial lawyer's convention. Along with a dozen other Democrats, the candidate was in Canada to rake in thousands in donations from trial lawyers who know what side of their bread is buttered, for sure. Chicago Sun-Times reporter Lynn Sweet has all the details at her Scoop blog. But suffice to say that the Giannoulias campaign did not report the whereabouts of their candidate until the National Republican Senatorial Committee sent out a press release urging reporters to grill the Giannoulias campaign. What was Giannoulias trying to hide, eh?...
Why lawyers don't call people back
2010-06-30 22:44:00
A reader asked what she can do to get her lawyer to return phone calls. I've never really understood why so many attorneys seem to have this problem.  It's as if they don't actually want to have clients.  And even if you are busy, it's not hard to return a phone call or e-mail within 24 hours.  In the worst case scenario you can have your clerk or secretary do it. Yet lack of return phone calls is by far the #1 complaint against attorneys in Chicago.  It creates bad feelings and can often derail a case.  So if your lawyer won't call you back, what should you do?  Here are some suggestions: 1. Keep calling.  Politely advise how...

Why Has Sathya Sai Baba Not Faced The Indian Justice System?
2010-01-13 23:12:00
A question that keeps getting asked, and never answered by pro Sai interests - other than with a superficiality and ad hominem attacks resoundingly obvious to serious and probing investigators is: Given the grave seriousness of the allegations of serial sexual abuse of boys and young men from countries around the world, why have these matter not been dealt with through the justice system? Essentially, the answer is that Sathya Sai Baba is powerfully protected by Indian governmental corruption, irrespective of which regime has the upper hand. In 2001, the celebrated Indian advocate Kamini Jaiswal (who was a lawyer for the famous ?Bandit Queen? Phoolan Devi) attempted to mount, pro bono, a case against Sai Baba on behalf of a former Sai Baba devotee, Hari Sampath. apparently a former member of Sathya Sai Baba's intelligence and security wing.
Mesothelioma Lawyers Know Exactly What is Going On
2010-01-02 16:03:00
Mesothelioma is a heartbreaking condition caused by exposure to asbestos. It is a form of cancer that develops mainly in the outer lining of the lungs or the heart, but most certainly can also form in the abdominal cavity. This cancer is often found in people who have worked with asbestos in the past, most notably when it was inhaled on the job site.In the United States, 10,000 people a year die from asbestos intake, and many people who suffer from mesothelioma have the legal ability to extract compensation from the companies that have used the asbestos that harmed them. Taking legal action for asbestos-related health issues is a touchy subject, though, and the laws are constantly changing. Different states have also adopted different laws on the subject, so depending where you live or where the incident took place, you may find yourself facing differing legal issues. In Texas, the asbestos laws change all the time. Before you should worry about that, though, you need to have been di...

Judges on journalism & lawyers on blogging...
2009-07-24 00:41:00
While it's nice to know that Chicago's very own federal judge Richard Posner is a fan of newspapers, it's interesting to hear what he thinks will help save them. Here's what he blogged today on the future of newspapers: "Expanding copyright law to bar online access to copyrighted materials without the copyright holder's consent, or to bar linking to or paraphrasing copyrighted materials without the copyright holder's consent, might be necessary to keep free riding on content financed by online newspapers from so impairing the incentive to create costly news-gathering operations that news services like Reuters and the Associated Press would become the only professional, nongovernmental sources of news and opinion."...

Working With Chinese and Korean Lawyers. The Big Four Issues With Each.
2009-04-19 08:13:00
Last year, I wrote an article for the Complete Lawyer, entitled, "Working with Korean and Chinese Lawyers." I was originally asked to write on working with Asian lawyers, in general, but convinced the magazine to allow me to focus on just China and Korea. I asked for this limitation because I did not believe myself experienced enough in working with lawyers from other Asian countries to write about working with them and, more importantly, because I did not see enough similarities to talk of Asia as a whole. I was reminded of that article today after receiving a complimentary email from a Chinese lawyer studying law here in the United States. An article like this has to generalize a bit and there are certainly exceptions to everything I say, but having worked with dozens of law firms in Korea and China, I have noticed the following four problems in dealing with lawyers from those two countries, respectively: KOREA 1. Non-responsiveness is the norm. American lawyers generall...

Lawyers trying not to sue? Getouttahere!
2009-01-16 22:30:00
Did you ever wonder what "practicing law" really means? The nitty-gritty of it, and the overall philosophy of it?A lot of lawyers, too many lawyers, think that "practicing law" means "suing people and trying cases." That is, a client comes in with a problem and the lawyer either defends a lawsuit or files a lawsuit to solve that problem. But I can tell you as a lawyer, lawsuits create as many problems as they solve, if not more.Lawyers, at their best, are problem solvers. And the best lawyers know that there's a better way to solve problems than sue everyone in sight. Take the Pennsylvania Lawyers at Cohen Seglias Pallas Greenhall & Furman PC, a full-service law firm with offices all over the mid-Atlantic seaboard. They can litigate, sure, and they've got tons of great lawyers to do just that. But what they do is MORE than simply sue-and-be-sued. Look at what they put into their philosophy:"We urge our clients to adopt proactive policies toward legal-sensitive business issue...

I almost feel sorry for her a little.  Now mind you, I'm super relieved that she is NOT the Vice-President Elect (so very, very relieved), but this bad news just keeps piling on:Sarah Palin left the national stage Wednesday, but the controversy over her role on the ticket flared as aides to John McCain disclosed new details about her expensive wardrobe purchases and revealed that a Republican Party lawyer would be dispatched to Alaska to inventory and retrieve the clothes still in her possession...For weeks, the McCain-Palin campaign has dealt with the fallout from the disclosure that the Republican National Committee was billed for $150,000 in wardrobe purchases for the Palin family -- a discovery that was widely ridiculed and undercut Palin's hockey mom appeal.Several McCain aides said they had recently discovered that Palin's traveling staff had used personal credit cards to spend as much as $20,000 to $30,000 on additional wardrobe items for Palin.[Source]
