2009-12-12 02:25:00

Good afternoon, Lincoln Park Now readers, and has our neighborhood been busy in the headlines today! With a missing teen, a woman pulled from a lagoon, and a serious stabbing, Lincoln Park has seen its share of emergencies the past two days. Photo by flikr user Chris.VioletteNews bulletins, alerts, and tweets galore flew around the internet earlier this morning when police asked for the public's help in locating 14-year-old Leslie Sinclair of Lincoln Park.According to a Chicago Sun-Times article, Sinclair was last seen yesterday at 2:30 p.m. in her apartment on the 2200 block of N. Lincoln Ave., with a friend identified only as "Chris." Her mother came home and asked Chris to leave, only to discover shortly there after that...

Defamed? Lincoln Park business files suit over puppy mill protests
2009-12-05 08:13:00
As Chicago gasped at its first snow sighting of this season Thursday, Pawsh Puppies of 2120 N. Halsted is feeling the chill a little more than the rest of us.  A defamation lawsuit just filed by Pawsh Puppies against the stream of protesters campaigning against their Northbrook and Lincoln Park stores over the last month is asking:    Shut up, Save A Pet, INC., and pay up!!!   Fellow ChicagoNow legal blog Chicago Bar-Tender details the lawsuit accusing @PuppyMilProject, the not for profit Save-A-Pet, of defaming activism that could irreparably harm the business. Concern flurries throughout the filing that the holiday sales this season could suffer after online and on-the-street demonstrations of the activists "adopt-only" campaign.     The suit claims that Pawsh has been indefinitely stalled in plans to expand the operation...

"Trixies and Chads": Is the Lincoln Park neighborhood a playgroun
2009-11-27 22:15:00
At the risk of presenting myself as a blogger who does all my research on Twitter, I'd like to share with Lincoln Park Now readers yet another interesting controversy I discovered as a result of a curious tweet.A Twitter user with only 4 followers, @TrixieSociety tweeted yesterday morning about a free Starbucks gingerbread cinnamon latte giveaway for all "Trixies" or members of the Lincoln Park Trixie Society in the Lincoln Park area stores. That's interesting, I thought, and obviously untrue. But what is the Lincoln Park Trixie Society?(c)2009 Lincoln Park Trixie Society and respective Copyright Holders...
Lincoln Park favorite bars offer Blackout Wednesday specials
2009-11-24 23:45:00
By now, most people have probably secured their Thanksgiving plans and are daydreaming about all the delicious food to come. What's not to love about Thanksgiving? It's a day devoted to lounging, eating, and reminiscing with relatives. But there's another holiday on the horizon that celebrates a different kind of binging--Blackout Wednesday!I recently learned that the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is one of the biggest party nights of the year. I am not sure why this never occurred to me previously, since it makes a lot of sense. People are home (or soon to be headed home) for the holiday and won't have to work the next day. That means that they are free to party hard the whole night before Thanksgiving...
Puppy mill protesters target Lincoln Park's Pawsh Puppies
2009-11-22 04:00:00
You know those teeny-tiny, adorable little puppies that are all the rage in Lincoln Park? Well, they've worked some Chicagoans into a rage of their own.Today at about 1:30 p.m., Twitter user @Davie_St posted two tweets about a big protest he discovered outside of Pawsh Puppies at 2120 N. Halsted in Lincoln Park:@Davie_St: Passed a lively, homegrown protest outside a Lincoln Park froo-froo doggies-for-sale boutique. Looked like fun!@Davie_St: Sign: "Here $1500 buys one sick dog. At animal shelters, $1500 adopts 150 dogs." Ah, good point.A group of protesters from the Puppy Mill Project picketed outside Pawsh Puppies in Lincoln Park for 3 hours today, according to Pawsh Puppies store manager Alex Gershbeyn. Concert review: Mike Doughty at Lincoln Hall
2009-10-18 15:59:00
Mike Doughty's "Question Jar Show" is a great, casual concept for a concert. The former Soul Coughing singer showcases his solo work (plus a few covers and, inevitably, his former band's "Circles") with just himself and his guitar, with an assist from Andrew "Scrap" Livingston on cello. Every few songs, one of the guys pulls questions, submitted by the audience, out of a jar and Doughty answers them, with either seriousness or snark, depending on the question. (Inquiries frequently involve requests to bring someone up on stage or amusingly absurd hypotheticals, such as who would win a fight between the mascots of Lucky Charms and Count Chocula.)The concert was a safe, sturdy pick for Friday night's musical opening of Lincoln...
1854 N. Lincoln: Open House of the week
2009-10-17 21:41:00
Jennifer Vogel of Sudler-Sotheby's showed me around the one-bedroom, one-bath unit at 1854 N. Lincoln Ave. this afternoon. The unit is only about 850 square feet, but with its open floorplan it has room for surprisingly large furniture and a cozy feel.   The unit was gut rehabbed about 2 years ago and includes very high end kitchen finishes, like a stove imported from Italy and a Bosch dishwasher. The kitchen space is small, but efficient.   The bedroom has enough space for a queen bed plus an interested above-closet storage area near the 11 foot ceiling. The bathroom is small but also well finished, still keeping with the historic character. Other amenties include a shared outdoor deck and a...

Showings of the Week: Lincoln Park
2009-08-23 20:10:00
Realtor of the Week Kevin Tatum showed me four properties in the Lincoln Park community area on Friday, each with their own unique style. The first was Kevin's own listing, a one bedroom for $249,000 in Americana Towers, 1636 N. Wells. The 830 square foot one-bedroom seems ideal for a first time buyer, with a good amount of space, recently rehabbed kitchen and large walk in closet. The floor to ceiling windows also offer a great city view. The association fees are relativley low considered the amenties that are included (a doorman, pool and exercise room at just $368 a month). The space is efficient, with enough room for a dining table and full-sized couch. The bedroom had a queen-sized...

Lincoln Park muggings call for carrying a gun
2009-08-19 20:06:00
When you live in a bubble, expect a few cracks in the glass. I'm not surprised by the Lincoln Park crimes. I have empathy - but no surprise. Ruthless reptiles would think twice if we had conceal carry. If a victim fired back after being clocked by thieves, we probably would see far less wallets and cell phones taken on the north side. Lincoln Park ain't walkable, no mo' unless you lift the gun ban. Police officers are doing their best, but if these assault robberies are random, related, or gang angled, we all need to be more careful, forming a cautionary strategy, also known as a 9mm. Is this a news story on the south side or west side? Is this news...
Neighborhood of the Week: Lincoln Park
2009-08-17 04:59:00
This week, I'm exploring my neighor to the south, Lincoln Park. Non-Chicagoans might know the neighborhood for its park and zoo, as well as its fashionable reputation, but Chicagoans know it for difficult street parking and interesting independent shops. The City of Chicago Community area map defines the area as being bordered by the Lake on the east, Diversey on the north and North Avenue on the south. The western border jogs west from Racine on the south to just past Damen on the north. So far this year 407 attached units have sold for an average price of $461,862 in Lincoln Park. This is down from the same time period  last year, when 637 sold for an average price...

Obama Visit Screws Up Parking, Traffic In Lincoln Park
2009-07-24 00:50:00
Nothing will screw up traffic and parking more than a visit from a President.Limos, cops, secret service, and a convoy of vehicles. It just screws things up.This truism strikes close to home over in toney Lincoln Park, where this evening President Obama is allegedly dining at his friend Penny Pritzker's home. The entire 1800 block of north Orchard (at Armitage) is blocked off with blue Chicago police barricades. All cars have been moved (or towed) off both Orchard and Armitage and neighboring streets are being restricted by the cops to residents only. The way I see it, President Obama's visit is just screwing up traffic and parking, much like his plans for health care and the economy....
Michelle Obama's father is buried in Lincoln Cemetery
2009-07-15 00:10:00
I blogged earlier that Michelle Obama's father was buried in Burr Oak Cemetery - see earlier blog. First Lady Obama's communications director, Camille Johnston, has notified the press that Fraser Robinson III, is buried in nearby Lincoln Cemetery in Alsip. Camille Johnston: Special Assistant to First Lady Michelle Obama Although the mis-speak saturated the web, Johnston quickly retracted the statement, and we're notifying everyone on ChicagoNow.com. We appreciate your patience with Garrard McClendon Live. I also forgive Camille Johnston for an honest mistake. The cemeteries are in proximity to one another.    ...

Lincoln MKS EcoBoost - another reason why Lincoln should have kept the LS
2009-05-14 20:36:00
The 2010 Lincoln MKS with the EcoBoost engine option is the big brother to the SHO, sharing engine (without the extra 10 HP), chassis, strengthened transmission, and other components. And if you think the Taurus SHO is too heavy at >4360 pounds, the Lincoln - with even more options - will be even worse. With an engine that, according to Lincoln, makes as much HP as a 4.6 liter V-8 (it actually makes a LOT more), and an unexceptional EPA rating of 17/24, the net mileage won't be any better than a V-8 powered car. Given the weight of this porker, this engine won't be able to do much to improve the "fuel economy leadership" that Ford wants to promote. What's needed is a much lighter and smaller Lincoln. Then the EcoBoost V-6 would show it's potential. So, unfortunately, the Lincoln MKS and SHO both suffer from the same problem: weight and plenty of it. And while we've harped on this topic many times over all these past years, we'll say it again: Linco...
Ed Lincoln - Seu Piano e Seu Orgao Espetacular (1961)
2009-04-15 06:14:00
This disc is here for a quite a long time, but never had my attention. I thought it was already available here, or perhaps it was only a reissue among the many released throughout Ed Lincoln's discography. Now I'm happy to be wrong, wrong twice. This album is the first issue of the second album released by Ed Lincoln (although Musidisc's ST XPL-12 serial number is big and visible at the front cover) and is also an album never released before at Loronix. There are also other relevant things to say about this one. Let's see. This is Ed Lincoln - Seu Piano e Seu Orgao Espetacular (1961), for Musidisc, featuring Pedrinho Rodrigues voice for the first time on recordings. The back cover says Ed Lincoln had the accompaniment of the same that recorded his first album for Helium Label, Ed Lincoln =Ao Seu Ouvido, but all my searches failed, although I'm really convinced I saw this personnel listing available somewhere, not a long time ago. Mr. President, You are No Abraham Lincoln
2009-02-12 21:06:00
Ben Feller and Christopher Wills, Associated Press: WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama called on Americans Thursday to follow Abraham Lincoln’s example of showing generosity to political opponents and valuing national unity - above all else.  AFAIK, Abraham Lincoln never attempted to resolve and argument by saying “I won“, nor did Lincoln ever vote “present.”  In short and in the words of Lloyd Bentsen, “Mr President, I know Abraham Lincoln, and you sir are no Lincoln.”: BitsBlog Tags: generosity, Mr. President, AFAIK, political opponents, lloyd bensen Related posts BO’s Economics Really Stinks (0) Obama Giving Up on Virginia? Abraham Lincoln?s Bicentennial & His Legacy:?The Moral Ground of Freedom?

George McGovern: Barack Obama Is a ‘Second Lincoln’
2008-12-23 22:16:00
Few people come as quickly to the defense of George McGovern as McGovern himself. For McGovern, though—along with many Democrats who followed him—the damage ...
Muralist Lola Poston and the Lincoln Theatre
2008-12-03 13:00:00
Her paintings were shown at the 1939 World’s Fair, and she helped decorate the White House during the Roosevelt Administration. But the artistic highlight of Lola Poston’s painting career was surely the six 15x20 ft. murals she created in 1929 for the auditorium of the newly built Lincoln Theatre, a talking picture palace and vaudeville stage in Marion, VA. Billed as "the finest playhouse between Roanoke and Knoxville," the theater opened on July 1 that year playing Close Harmony to a standing room only crowd. Lincoln Theatre served as the flagship of a chain of movie houses throughout SW Virginia. Today it’s one of only three remaining American movie houses built in Mayan Revival style.Lincoln Theatre’s interior resembles an ancient temple with exotic representations of mythological gods and creatures painted on the ceilings and walls. Poston’s murals live amidst this décor, housed in pyramid frames. Poston used cotton panels with water-based paints to depict scenes in...
