Is Office Email Going the Way of Snail Mail?
2011-12-06 19:52:00
I ran across this article predicting the end of office email. I find email, as clogged as it is with junk, a nice way to get into the work mode and find out what is going on. As I sip my coffee, I browse through the inbox and get a sense of satisfaction as I delete the junk mail. Is this the way

MAIL-ORDER ART
2011-10-03 15:00:00
A Boston-based start-up by the name of Turning Art is snagging a page out of Netflix's rent-by-mail model and delivering fresh, rotating visuals right to its customer's doorsteps! After wading through the time-consuming ordeal of selecting the right piece for his own space, founder, Jason Gracilieri, was inspired to create something that would make it easier for others--a mail-order service that allows customers to select art from a library of replica prints and "try it out" in their homes for a monthly fee of $10/month for a standard frame and $30/month for a larger frame. There's even an accumulating ArtCredit feature that can be applied to the purchase of original pieces. Check out the following video to see how it all works:

Yahoo Dragged To Court For Not Providing Govt Requested E-mail Details
2011-09-15 10:34:00
In a landmark judgment which might set a precedent for cyber security, The Delhi High Court has stayed an order by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), which asked Yahoo India to pay Rs 11 lakh as penalty. According to the CCA, the penalty is for the failure to provide personal email details to protect “national interestsâ€. The government sought these confidential details from CCA about some individuals, who in turn asked Yahoo India to furnish the same. Yahoo India however did not provide the information and was fined under Section 28 of the Information Technology (IT) Act. No Wrongdoing on our part, says Yahoo On behalf of Yahoo India, former solicitor general Gopal Subramanium was adamant that the firm had complied with the provision of Section 69 of the IT Act and had provided the information. “CCA is not authorized to impose a fine or penalty,†said Yahoo India. This was further opposed by the CCA saying that it had asked for collection of information, but S...

Snail Mail Being Overtaken By E-mail And SMS
2011-08-30 08:44:00
Post offices are part and parcel of India’s culture but due to our increasing population and the time taken to deliver mails, the volume of snail mail and telegrams has been steadily dropping. Even when majority of the population depends on the postal mechanism to deliver their communications. But a digital revolution is slowly taking place in our country. Everyone owns a smartphone/feature phone which has a default email client, Twitter and Facebook apps which help them to be in touch with all their contacts. With the prices of smartphones dropping due to the efforts of manufacturers like Micromax, Karbonn, Spice, Samsung and Nokia, the smartphone is finally within  the reach of the common man. Telecom operators have also slashed the rates of calls and data usage. This has resulted in people adopting emails, SMS and IM as a primary mode of communication and this new trend has caused a considerable drop in volume of mails handled by the Post Offices. During 2009-10 the traffic ...

4 Years Later And Chicago Mail Delivery STILL Worst In Nation
2011-03-07 14:07:00
This has nothing to do with real estate and originally it was going to be a small part of another blog post I'm working on but as I dug into the subject I decided this deserves top billing. Ever since I moved back to Chicago 12 years ago (time flies) I have lamented at the deplorable mail service in this city. Originally I lived in Lake View (60657, infamous for lousy postal service) and I noticed that every afternoon the neighbors would meet in the street to exchange all the mis-delivered mail (OK, I'm exaggerating a bit). We requested our mail held while we were on vacation 3 times over the course of 3 years and it was NEVER...

2011-02-13 21:23:00
Dazzling sunshine bathes the terrace where the guests take breakfast in one of Andalucia's most luxurious hotels. The mountains of Africa shimmer on the horizon across a postcard-blue Mediterranean. The well heeled clientèle of the five-star Kempinski resort on the Costa del Sol are enjoying the luxury of dining al fresco in the second week of February. But one guest seems utterly at odds with the picture of leisurely indolence. Petra Nioduschewski sits alone. Her head is bowed, as she clutches a mobile phone to her ear, her face pallid and her eyes red-raw. The statuesque blonde never walks the nearby beach or uses the hotel spa or its three outdoor swimming pools... Despite having an estimated ?23million income from his two London-based companies, Moore was only giving himself a yearly wage of ?44,000 at the time of his death - ?15,800 from Bonuswise and ?28,200 from Orionstar, from a combined annual turnover of ?1.76million. Loop Announces Free Email Service For A Year – Loop Mail
2011-02-07 14:30:00
Earlier today, Loop Mobile announced on its website a new service called Loop Mail. It will be SMS based, so it doesn’t even require a GPRS connection. And the type of handset wouldn’t matter either. Your email ID will <yournumber>@loopmobile.i-n. And to receive emails from your regular accounts, all you have to do it set them to autoforward your emails to your Loop Mail address. Of course, SMS isn’t the most convenient way to receive emails, but something is better than nothing – more so, given that the feature will be free for an introductory period of one year. To activate the service you need to text LMAIL to 50303. After this, Loop will send you a message with your email id and password – along with a WAP link to to reset your password or change the nickname for your email id – i.e. something other than your phone number. And that’s it. Operating it required using short codes from the table below. And if you receive an attachment...

The Art of Text, E-Mail Finesse
2010-11-04 23:10:00
Though it's not good to make assumptions, I'm going to make one. In eras past when people had to get a message out, I'm thinking it was for something important. No one sent a carrier pigeon, a telegram by stagecoach or used a Morse code machine just to rant.I just spent the morning talking to a client who now lives in Michigan. She is an attractive, educated and petite blonde. She has been on several dates with a 40-year-old shy engineering executive. Here are some excerpts from e-mails she has been receiving from him (used with her permission):I have been working in my yard the last two nights. I've been pulling out some overgrown shrubbery. Unfortunately, I have been getting home...
Gmail and Yahoo!Mail Now In Your Hotmail Inbox
2010-11-03 04:30:00
Hotmail has rolled out a new feature that allows its users to use Hotmail with any existing email address, even from domains belonging to competitors such as Gmail and Yahoo. This can be compared to the functionality provided by Microsoft Outlook, but on the web. The feature thus allows the non-Hotmail users to continue with their existing e-mail while also taking advantage of Hotmail features like Sweep, or the ability to send 10GB worth of photos at once. To use this feature, users just have to sign-in using Windows Live ID to register and validate their email address. For those users who don’t have a Windows Live Id, they can sign up for a new Hotmail account and use their email address while registering. Once the registration is complete, Hotmail will help the users to connect to the old service and import the existing email using POP. After the outside account is setup within Hotmail, the users can read and search through their emails and respond to them from that address...

Yahoo! Mail Beta – Faster, Easier and More Social?
2010-10-27 15:43:00
Gmail maybe India’s most used email service since Oct’09, but Yahoo! is still the most ‘popular’ worldwide(273-million users). Today, it has announced a new opt-in Beta version which, in its own words, will be ‘Faster, Easier, and More Social.’ The idea behind the UI revamp is to give it a consistent look across all platforms – desktop, mobile, and tablet devices. The new Beta claims to be more than 2 times faster than the previous version. It also offers a new and improved spam protection filter. The search feature has been tweaked and is capable of more refined searches. Video content and slideshows from Picasa/Flickr can now be played within an email and storage is unlimited. Those were the under-the-hood changes. Now let’s look at the visible ones. The new Interface has been heavily inspired by Yahoo! Mail on the iPad and Android. When you log into your account, it first takes you to a ‘What’s New’ tab which repre...

Postal Workers Union Election on Hold Over Ballots Lost in the Mail
2010-10-07 21:42:00
-By Warner Todd Huston The incompetence of public employee unions strikes again. The American Postal Workers Union has been forced to extend its election because too many mail-in ballots have yet to get to their final destination. That's right, the postal workers election is on hold because the post office lost the ballots in the mail. The union's election committee was supposed to be counting those ballots this week in downtown Washington, D.C., following a tradition mail-in election. But the union announced that only about 39,000 ballots were turned in -- and that "a large number of union members had not received their ballots." Government workers doing their normal substandard work, eh? And these are the same people that want...

Prairie Stater: Debbie Makes it Three, Another Taxpayer-Funded Direct Mail
2010-08-07 17:05:00
From the Prairie Stater's John Reynolds We previously reported here and here about the taxpayer funded direct mail pieces being send out at your expense by Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson (D-11). Well, today, she made it three: that's three taxpayer-funded direct mail pieces in as many weeks. Today's mail piece was about veterans' issues. We again note the irony in the fact that her first mail piece was about "reining in spending" and her efforts to be fiscally responsible. Is sending out three self-promotional direct mail pieces at taxpayer expense while our country faces a $1.47 trillion deficit really fiscally responsible? Again, we must ask: how much of our money is Debbie spending to send out these mailers?...

Google takes another step towards turning into Microsoft - Mail & Guardian Online: The smart news sourcehttp://www.mg.co.za/artic-le/2010-02-14-google-takes-anot-her-step-towards-turning-into-m-icrosoftThere are occasions when the true colors of corporate arrogance show themselves and it's not pretty. Google has done well to steer clear of being tarnished with the image as an uncaring 'corporate giant' that has hit so many other large corporations that only do things for money. That's why I found this article so interesting to read. Google isn't a charitable organization and its willingness to try to cut off smaller players at the ankles by using its market penetration shows what happens when youthful exuberance turns into a cruel corporate game. Fortunately, cloud computing is opening the doors to European and Asian innovators and it is in these far flung parts of the planet that innovation is taking hold.Perhaps we should all think a little more about the negative consequenc...
