Malaysian retail property 'attracting attention'
2012-05-10 02:00:00
Many commercial real estate investors in Malaysia are focused on the country's retail sector at present. This is the finding of a new Savills report into property investment markets in the Asia-Pacific region in the first quarter of this year. The firm predicted there will be "major shopping centre transactions" in the three months from April to June, highlighting several deals and developments in the pipeline. In addition, the hospitality sector was described as "quite bullish", with an increasing number of local businesses ploughing their money into this part of the Malaysian commercial property market. The study concluded: "The success of the retail sector is closely linked to tourism. Nearly 25 million tourists arrived in the country last year, with receipts edging close to RM60 billion (£12.1 billion)." In the latest Global Commercial Property survey published by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, sentiment among commercial r...
Bersih 3.0 turnout, crackdown resets Malaysian politics
2012-05-02 14:06:00
This is an article I completed today for Asia Times Online. The BN finds itself on the political defensive after police personnel cracked down on a largely peaceful 28 April protest held in Kuala Lumpur calling for electoral reforms. The large popular turnout and government’s perceived mishandling of the rally will likely push back general [Read more]
Positive outlook for Malaysian property market
2012-04-25 02:00:00
There are many reasons for investors to be optimistic about the prospects of Malaysia's real estate sector. Writing for The Star Online, managing director of SDB Properties Teh Lip Kim explained the country's housing market is "still relatively underpriced" in comparison to other south-east Asian nations like Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong. He added property prices in Malaysia are likely to continue to rise, despite the government discussing measures to slow growth down. One proposal is to increase the minimum amount foreigners have to spend in order to buy real estate in the country - this currently stands at RM500,000 (£101,093), but could climb to RM1 million. However, the expert pointed out this is likely to have little impact, as the majority of transactions conducted by overseas purchasers are already over the RM1 million threshold. When the suggestion of raising the minimum purchase price for foreign buyers was first made earlier this month, an anon...
Prata Man on Capstan Way, Richmond
2012-02-01 16:00:00
When we visited Pho Han, we put a long forgotten hole in the wall restaurant, Prata-Man back in the our places to visit. We had visited it when we were new to the city. That was more than 10 years ago. We over heard the server telling a customer at the table next to us that Prata-Man has been in business for more than 20 years.
Laurie Monk: Malaysian Guitaronsky Man of The Year 2011
2012-01-07 02:11:00
Shameless self publicity :) I have to thank Malaysian guitar fans for this honour: Guitaronsky Man of The Year 2011!! Going to be another busy year... NAMM is already build, lots of great tours happening in Europe. Musikmesse continues apace with another lined up for Russia this year. I hope I can live up to this honour and deliver more guitar news and videos for your delectation.  I still have many videos to post from 2011 and earlier... only if SOPA rules allow of course.  Feel free to tell me what you like and don't like about the blog and I'll see if I can add more of the things you like and less of the things that annoy. Penang Delight Cafe: "Got-got-got. Everything Also Got."
2011-01-11 09:01:00
Suanne and I don?t normally return to the ?crime scene?. Once we write about a restaurant, we hardly go back for a second visit. There are simply too many other restaurants out there for us to visit and write about. What more, all you readers out there has this insatiable appetite for more new posts on restaurants. But this time I am gonna make an exception. We re-visited Penang Delight with Ron and Nancy again to try dishes we missed the first time we were here. You see, we were very ?mm-gum-yuen? from our previous visit (see post here). We were there on the first day of business and the restaurant was completely overwhelmed with the reception they had. Almost everything we wanted to order on their menu, they ran out of it. Assam Laksa ?> sorry! Pan Mee ?> sorry! Penang Char Koay Teow ?> sorry! Bah Kut Teh ?> sorry! Loh Mein ?> sorry! So yeah, our heart is so ?mm-song? already. You know the feeling right? It is like unrequited love. Something like that. Oh ...
Bo Laksa King?s on Joyce and Wellington, Vancouver
2009-12-18 17:39:00
I just gotta see for myself what this hype was all about. When a group of pro chowhounds goes crazy in the forum over something, it has to count for something. After tasting something that costs about $5, they are yearning for more. They are even talking about throwing in $50 each to the chef to give them more. From the way I read it, everything that the chef creates, will definitely turn out to be a winner. They had been surprised by the chef already weekend after weekend when the chef concocts something new. So, I just gotta see for myself what this hype is all about. And all these is happening in the most unlikeliest of places. All these is happening starting from one dish -- Laksa. Unless you live in the neighborhood, you will never walk into the Joyce-Way Food Market to pick a your grocery. Even if you do, you will not even think they have an eatery in it. This convenience shop is located on Joyce in Vancouver. It is just a short walk just north of the Joyce Skytrain st...

Malaysian Court Says MCCURRY Does Not Infringe MCDONALD'S
2009-09-09 07:11:00
McCurry’s owners get a happy result in victory against McDonald’s.Photo credit: AP/Mark Baker On Sept. 8, a 3-judge panel of Malaysia’s federal court found a restaurant’s use of MCCURRY does not infringe McDonald’s Corp.’s rights in its well-known trademark. It’s apparently the end of the line for McDonald’s in its 8-year fight. The AP cites McCurry’s attorney as saying the ruling means McDonald’s does not have a monopoly over “MC” trademarks in connection with restaurants. “This is a precedent to follow,” he said. McCurry’s sells its curry fare in connection with white-and-grey lettering, a red background, and logo featuring a smiling chicken giving two thumbs up. McDonald’s, of course, sells its western-style fare in connection with its familiar golden arches. The court found these differences supported McCurry’s claim it isn’t passing itself off as ...

Chilli Padi on Fraser St, Vancouver
2008-12-02 06:12:00
We met up with Angie (of Sea Salt With Food) again for a Sunday lunch. We wanted to go for Indonesian and choose the Sweet Chili Cafe but it was closed on Sunday. Being already hungry and all set for hot and spicy South East Asian food, we went to the next place we can think of. A short drive to 41st and Fraser brought us to Chilli Padi. Chilli Padi is a Malay restaurant and located in the old location of Kedah House (another Malaysian restaurant). I describe Chilli Padi as a Malay restaurant as opposed to a Malaysian restaurant because it serves Malay food. Malaysian food encompasses a wider cuisine that includes Chinese and Indian cuisine.
Tamarind Hill Malaysian Cuisine in New Westminster

Suanne and I consider Ed and Christina from Doesn't Tazte Like Chicken as people with sharp mouth. No, I am not saying that they talks a lot. That is a literal translation from the Cantonese expression "Tsim Tsui". They know food very well alright. We had been meeting over dinners once every few weeks. It was our turn to select the location and this time, Suanne and I picked the Tamarind Hill Malaysian Cuisine located in New Westminster. The choice was a hands down choice for us as we know Malaysian food very well.

Nyonya Rice Dumplings
2008-06-06 08:50:00
I like anything with glutinous rice except when it is teamed with coconut. By itself, the rice is very fragrant and full of flavor and seem to soak up all the tastes of any ingredient it is cooked with.Mom bought some glutinous rice dumplings the other day. Nyonya rice dumplings to be precise. It's filling is sweet minced pork with mushrooms and doesn't have the traditional ingredients of the zong zi like salted duck egg yolk, chestnuts or mung beans.I have no idea why the one she bought has a tinge of blue but I think it's the same bunga telang coloring used for nasi kerabu. It doesn't really add to the taste. I guess it's just for decoration? Not all Nyonya rice dumplings are so colored.I'm still not quite sick of the zong zi yet although I've had it for lunch for the past 2 days! The only not so nice thing about eating too much glutinous rice is that it is bad for my digestion :(

Malaysian Petrol at RM2.70 per litre!? Get ready for the worst-case scenari

What the fuck!? All of a sudden, every Malaysian is caught with their pants down and balls or pussies hanging! You know what would happen in the next few months!?Let me just give you a few likely scenarios:More and more Malaysians will be declared bankrupts for failing to cope with their existing debts; credit cards, home loans, car loans and even personal loans.More and more Malaysians will lose their cars or homes to repo men (reposessers)More and more Malaysians will have marital problems; expect the divorce rates to go up next year.Crime rates will definitely go spiking up! We might even have our very own Robin Hoods next year.More and more Malaysians will go for motorcycles and the rate of road deaths and road accidents will go up even more.More and more materialistic Malaysian women (useless women, you don?t need them) will opt for bachelorhood or virginhood (if they are really virgins!).Welcome to the living Hell! In the mean time, let me express my feelings to the incompetent...

Gift ideas for Malaysian cat lovers & owners
2008-05-21 20:47:00
There are a lot of great gifts that you can give to Malaysian cat lovers, although photo frames are among the most popular. Photo frames are very affordable, and make a great gift for anyone who owns a cat or other pet. Those who own more than one cat will truly appreciate photo frames – as it gives them a chance to show off their pet. Malaysian cat lovers can also frame pictures of their pet for memories as well – and keep them forever and ever. Before you give a Malaysian cat lover a gift, you should take into consideration what type of cat the person owns. There are several breeds out there, including tabby, pure breeds, calico, Persian, and of course the infamous Siamese breeds. Someone may own several cats as well, which is why you should know a little bit about the breed or breeds someone owns before you get them a gift. You should take into consideration whether or not the Malaysian cat lover has an outdoor or indoor cat. Cats, unlike dogs, are more than happy t...

LaLa Chong Seafood Village
2008-05-11 15:21:00
David and I had an opportunity to go out for dinner yesterday night after being housebound ever since Micah was born. My sister asked her helper to stay home to look after Micah for a few hours while we went together with them for dinner nearby.'Dinner nearby' for my sister's family means LaLa Chong, the nearest seafood restaurant and also where they pack fried noodles when they don't cook.I was pretty happy to be out of the house and looking forward to having dinner at a restaurant. For the past 2 weeks, I've eaten at home and this outing, though nearby and just for dinner was the highlight. The wait for the food was long but not unexpected since it was a Sunday night and also Mother's Day. The kids got a bit restless but there were enough of us to entertain them.I wonder if it was the eating out experience that made the food taste so much better or that the food was just good. I did the ordering with the help of the elderly waiter or boss, who was not very patient and a tad s...

Raja Petra Kamaruddin, Malaysian Blogger Charged
2008-05-07 14:27:00
A Malaysian blogger was charged on Tuesday with sedition over an article he wrote linking a top government leader and his wife to the gruesome killing of a Mongolian woman. Raja Petra Kamaruddin, founder and editor of the popular Malaysia Today site, had posted an article which allegedly implicated Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, in the October 2006 murder. The 57-year-old Raja Petra pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out to him over the article, which prosecutors say contained “sentences deemed seditious.” “We bloggers have declared war on the government. Our final objective is to change the government,” Raja Petra declared before he was charged. Supporters, including opposition lawmakers and other bloggers, thronged the court in a show of support. Represented by seven lawyers, a defiant Raja Petra declined to post the 5,000 ringgit bail ($1,600) set by judge Nurmala Salim, preferring to be jailed until his October 6 trial date. “I...

2008-05-03 16:30:00
Yea the finale took place @ 1U The Oval on 29th of April 2008. It featured all he finalists @ the Grand Finale where the winner was revealed. Shocking thousands, when the winner - Cindy was announced. It looks like this Tey is the one that would be driving the Nissan Latio in pride & glee. Honestly speaking, this is the only photo of her that was the best throughout the competition. The others suck. Except for the lingerie. But that shoot, almost everyone did a good job. Based on the video, her photoshoot for this took so long. Why is that? Because she needed more guidance to work her angle & eye contact...Do I need to say anymore about her? Hate her look. The same from the beginning till the end. She was first runner up. *double shocker to me*And the fav one - Hanis the Manis. Was disappointed that she not only did not win but she got 2nd runner up!! Malaysian Thomas Cup Lineup Announced

FairuzizuanEverything is pretty much expected, except for the 4th Singles position of Arif Latif. He was selected above veteran Lee Tsuen Seng for the Thomas Cup tie. I believe this is a very bad decision. As I commented before:I can NOT imagine Arif playing as the 4th Singles for the Malaysian team, and managing to pull off a win against the more formidable opponents. Lee Tsuen Seng has experience playing (and upsetting) in the Thomas Cup, and other than his stamina, is a superb player. The 4th singles is supposed to be a reserved player, hence, Tsuen Seng most probably will be only used for perhaps 1 game when any one of the players want to rest. Hence, he is the perfect player in Malaysia for that position - good skills, but low stamina is a perfect 4th singles player.Skill wise, Arif is a good player, but Tsuen Seng is the obvious...
Malaysian Dreamgirl Finale : Top 3

Feelings Show by Colbie CaillatStolen by Dashboard Confessional*As I sit here; fingers typing with my freshly painted nails, MDG are probably preparing for the finale as our top 3 has been revealed. Shock?? Not really. Just a little. I think that Jay deserved to be on the top 3. And I wasn't looking forward to Adeline. Since there were only 6 of them left, only Jay & Hanis were really shining & should be on the top 3 in my opinion. *sigh* When Fiqa was voted out, I was pretty disappointed cz she is one of my favs. When I found out she got eliminated, my interest dropped. I was like OMG why Fiqa???? *To be honest, I don't think that Cindy & Adeline deserve it till now. Lack of facial expressions, Lack of the X-factor. Lack the model factor.
