Prevent Autorun-Related Malware Infection on Your Computer with BitDefender
2012-05-04 18:53:00
One of the easiest ways to get your computer infected by malware (or malicious software) is through the USB flash drive. Thanks to the easily-exploited autorun feature, the malware can modify the AUTORUN.INF file without fuss in the USB drive and instruct your computer to automatically launch (or spread) the malware once you insert the...

S.M.A.R.T. Check Malware
2012-04-17 09:00:00
By now we’ve all seen one of those rogue antivirus programs that look like a real antivirus program telling you that you are infected and unless you buy their software you can’t get rid of it. I even wrote about one once a few years ago, and how to use Malwarebytes to clean it up.Well I found one last week that I think is just as, if not more nasty. Instead of posing as an antivirus program, it looks like some kind of hard drive failure detection software. Right before it pops up, it launches about 50 other pop-up windows saying that there was a write error due to disk failure, then this fake program calling itself S.M.A.R.T. Check pops up and starts doing a bogus scan. I took a picture of it here because the victims computer wouldn’t let me take a screen shot:One of the things this bad boy did that I thought was fairly slick was it went through all of your program and users folders and hid all the folders! Here is a screen shot I took after I went into my folder o...

Apple has since patched Java, but this was only yesterday. As of today, more than 600,000 Macs are currently infected with the Flashback Trojan, ...

Android OS Falls Prey To Malware
2011-09-13 08:05:00
Malware attacks on the Android OS have risen significantly in the past few months.According to Trend Micro, a Global Cloud security leader, there has been a 14-fold increase of malware targeting Android smartphone users in the last six months. Another report from McAfee, estimates that the malware targeted at Android based devices jumped 76 per cent since the last quarter, making it the most attacked mobile operating system. To add to this recently Vodafone was blamed for shipping out 3000 worm infected HTC phones while Samsung inadvertently distributed malware along with its new S8500 Wave smartphones. The worm attempted to infect a user’s PC when the phone was connected to it. Though all security experts believe fault lies in downloading of infected or pirated apps and majority of the attacks can be thwarted by downloading legal apps  and using “lookoutâ€. One needs to keep in mind  that Android offers no built-in, default level encryption, and instead rely on isolation an...

Microsoft Research Working On New Malware Detection Tool ‘Zozzle&rsqu
2010-12-03 11:15:00
In the last several years, we have seen a tremendous increase in JavaScript malware-based attacks owing to the memory vulnerabilities of the system. These kind of attacks are hard to locate and can be easily mounted against an unsuspecting user visiting a seemingly innocent website. While several techniques have been proposed to tackle it but none are light enough to be integrated into a commercial browser. But now, people at Microsoft Research are working on a new tool called “Zozzle” that can be deployed in the browser and can detect JavaScript-based malware at a very high effectiveness rate. Zozzle is mostly a static detector that can examine a page and determine if it contains a malicious code for an exploit (better known as heap spray object). The runtime component of Zozzle takes care of the malicious JavaScript segment. Zozzle is integrated with browser’s JavaScript engine to collect and process JavaScript code that is created at runtime. However in order t...

Malware Crystal Ball

"Love of money and nothing else will ruin Sparta"(Life of Lycurgus, Plutarch) I was sitting down to write a blog on predictions for trends in Malware (as a follow up to my Phases of Malware blog) when I saw some interesting “breaking news”: there’s a worm that targets iPhone.
The Phases of Malware: The Virus is another year older!
2009-11-10 01:00:00
Having done virus research first hand and having been involved in the industry for nearly 20 years, I am never surprised at the doom saying around viruses.  I have also seen (and presented) many different “virus” timelines (like this well-done article from Wired reporter Kim Zetter). Today, I saw another one because it’s November 10th.  Why does that day matter?  It’s the day that viruses finally got a name, and it was our own Len Adleman (the “A” in RSA) who coined it in 1983.

2008, el año del malware
2008-12-09 17:47:00

Breaking News Alerts Phishing Scam
2008-08-15 06:58:00
Updated August 15:I haven't read about this yet, but in the past week or so, I have gotten some sort of phishing scam coming from CNN Breaking News Alerts and MSNBC Breaking News Alerts. They look very professional and seem like they are coming from CNN and MSNBC themselves. But I never signed up for either, so I figured it must a phishing attempt. I went to the page to change my settings to stop getting the newsletters that I never even signed up for in the first place, and it looked just like the CNN webpage. Good job, guys!A few days later, Google started marking these CNN News Alerts for me as phishing attempts. Now it's marking these hazy MSNBC alerts the same way. It turns out that both the CNN Breaking News Alerts and the MSNBC Breaking News Alerts were indeed phishing scams!Meantime, watch out for CNN News Alerts or MSNBC News Alerts coming to your mailbox when you never signed up for either one. Neither actual site is going to sign you up for breaking news alerts without ...
