A Taste of Yellow: Mango and Blueberry Fool

I had something totally different planned but something that Barbara said on Twitter stuck to my head. See, she recently bought her first mango of the season - that in itself is not... Mango Mastani (It's seriously addictive)
2009-05-19 13:11:00
My memories of enjoying a Mango Mastani go back a long long way, right to the time when I was about 10 years old. I mean today Pune has some fabulous Mastani places where the Mastani is sold in many different flavours but back then my dad used to take us to a small place , a stall actually, located at Saras Baug (readers from Pune will know the location ) . It was called Vasant Cold Drink House . It belonged to a friend of my dad's and he and sold the most awesome Mango Mastani made from fresh Alphonso mangoes and made in a hand turned ice cream maker. Eating this Mastani was a luxury and at a price as low as Rs.10.00 per glass it was practically free considering today's prices. A Mastani today costs around Rs.60.00 to 70.00 at Sujata Mastani in Pune .So every time I think of Mastani I always remember that small place which gave me my first taste of this beautiful beautiful dessert. No wonder it's also got this royal name . Mastani was a danseuse and wife to Bajirao Peshwa . She ...
Five Star Dal Fry
2009-05-13 11:31:00
See guys I have kept my word and am posting every few days now. In fact I keep rushing to take pics every time I have a dish ready to serve. I just hope I can keep it up. So this is a dal that I have for you today . I make this quite frequently for dinner as it is a good change from the regular Amti (a maharashtrian dal preparation) that we make practically everyday . I call it 5 star dal fry not because I first ate it at any 5 star restaurant or something but because it is a combination of 5 different dals, which makes it a powerhouse of protein. The special touch comes from cooking it in pure ghee rather than everyday sunflower oil. The ghee even when used in small quantities imparts a delicious taste and aroma to the dal which has everyone helping themselves to seconds and thirds. I very often cook this dal when I am out of fresh veggies . As there are 5 lentils in here it more than provides all the nutrition to make a balanced meal and as it is thick in consistency it is also ve...
Chocolate Mango And Coconut Cream Cake
2009-04-16 07:42:00
When others were painting eggs for Easter last week, I was busy painting a cake. Well, applying brush strokes to a birthday cake would be a more accurate description. Carol and Fifi paint, very well I might add. I just fiddle with a pastry brush because I am short on time to come up with other things to decorate this delicious Chocolate Mango And Coconut Entremet Cake.I know, I know, being short on time and making a multi layer cake does not seem right in the same sentence. Well, welcome to my logic! It's true I am not the most logical person for "real life" things although I am improving with each year that passes. The only domain for which I am extremely logical is in the kitchen and with food. Do not ask why. And just in case you needed proof let me tell you a little story...I was about 10 or 11 and learning maths and how to solve logical problems starting such as "if train A leaves the station at 11.35 and train B..." and this was about as far as my brain would register. Two tr...
Mango & Vanilla Bean Buttermilk Panna Cottas
2009-03-31 06:57:00
Interesting how even past 30 years old I still want mommy when I spike a fever and walk around with a box of tissues. Wondering why I never catch a 24 hour bug or never lose my appetite when sick. Sad to see my parents leave after such good times. Amusing to see the dogs go back and forth between both bedrooms looking for them. Funny how little mishaps can turn into creamy deliciousness like these Mango And Vanilla Bean Buttermilk Panna Cottas. The morning of my parents' departure, my father and I were up before anyone else as usual. We were reminiscing about the last few weeks spent together. We like to talk food while preparing meals. Surprise, surprise! When we were kids, my father taught us how to crack and juice a coconut, introduced us to the wonders of papaya simply sprinkled with lime juice, cooked the most fabulous Osso Bucco or rice pilaf. I guess he will be my other guest blogger when they come back! This past Sunday morning, the conversation fell on the wonderful meal my ...
Raw Green Mango Chow (recipe)
2009-02-06 05:44:00
Green mango chow is a wonderful accompaniment to most meals. Light and yet spicy, it adds a tart sweetness when used as a condiment. Chows like these are best used by slightly under-ripe fruits. In this case I have used a green mango, however pineapples are sometimes used, and even though I’ve never seen it done locally, my recent readings on Vietnamese cuisine cos me to believe it should also work brilliantly with green papaya. Assembly is quite simple. The recipe below is really quite loose and forgiving. Feel free ... Related posts:Mango Lassi (recipe)Green Olive Tapenade (recipe)Fresh Green Bean Salad (recipe)

Frozen Yogurt at Red Mango. To me, the taste is just like any other frozen yogurt. I can't tell the difference of frozen yogurt. Fresh Mango Yellow (Click: Yellow for Bri)
2008-06-23 05:40:00
My entry to Click:June 2008 {Yellow for Bri} is this delicious fresh and very tantalising Alphonso Mango. I clicked it with my Sony DSC-P73. This is an appeal on behalf of a group of food bloggers who are friends of Briana Brownlow @ Figs With Bri.Bri was diagnosed with breast cancer two and half years ago. A mastectomy, chemotherapy and two years of relatively good health later, the cancer is back. It has metastasized to other parts of her body. At the age of 15, Bri lost her 41-year old mother to the disease. Now, she?s waging her own war against breast cancer. More about it here. She is going through intensive chemo and other treatments and needs to focus single-mindedly on healing and finding what treatment works best for her. Her health insurance, unfortunately, does not cover holistic alternatives which she would like to try. Delicious Summer Mango-Strawberry Trifle
2008-06-10 20:00:00
The Mango Mania in Maharashtra is something that words simply cannot describe . Alphonso or Haapus: The King of Mangoes is the one that grabs all the limelight and quite rightly so.There is a palpable excitement in the air at the arrival of the Alphonso which makes an appearance in the markets in small numbers at the start of the season (which is from end March to May) . On it's arrival it is quite expensive. But by the time the harvest peaks it is all over the place and can be bought in large quantities though I would say the price is never really as low as that of other other ordinary fruit like apples and bananas. It?s sweetness and flavour go way beyond the word ?delicious? and is truly a ?Slice of Heaven on Earth?.The Alphonso takes it?s name from Afonso De Albuquerque : a Portuguese sailor who brought this exquisite and expensive variety of mango to Goa. The locals took to calling it Aphoos in Konkani and in Maharashtra the pronunciation further changed to Hapoos. At my mom's...

Barbie on the other hand will never drink MNG stores in July! ... [Original Post on MyItThings.com]

Mango Cake with Streusel Topping
2008-05-30 15:12:00
One of the best ways to flavor cakes is by using seasonal fruits, and when you are thinking about fruits and cakes in this warm summer, you cannot dare to ignore a delicious Mango Cake! They are not called the king of fruits for no reason; with a lovely shape and smell, a juicy and fibrous interior, mangoes lend a wonderful texture, sweetness and softness to cakes. So intending to use my indian mangoes, I had been planning to bake a Mango Streusel Cake for quite some time now. Trying to choose... Please Click the Title for the Full Post

But this dish made the decision easier. It's a great side or starter with a casual evening meal with friends.Toss together cooked chana (chick peas), boiled and cubed potato, chaat masala, slices of raw mango, salt ,chilly powder, lemon juice and plenty of fresh chopped coriander. Instant Mango Shrikhand stuffed in Chapathi (Burrito style)

THE MAGICAL MILLIONWhile I was waiting for the magic one millionth hit to happen, it came and went without my knowledge and now it is a million plus some 7000, but thank you my dear readers, friends, family for encouraging me and keeping me going at this blog. Here's to a million more :)(My posts don't seem to be appearing on the Taste of India feed list, so please subscribe to the feed on your favourite reader or by email)I'm back home, after spending two weeks with my parents. They live in the same city as me, an hour's drive at most times. But I have rarely stayed this long. One week's stay got extended by another week thanks to a nasty cold which they didn't want me to nurse myself as DH was out traveling. Needless to say, I hardly cooked in the last two weeks, had hogged a lot of traditional lunches, and just lazed and lazed. Since I was getting back to an empty house last afternoon, I had planned for two of my friends to come over and spend the night. No cooking involved,...

MANGOLICIOUS MORNINGS with FRUITY BEGINNINGS!!

?Marriages are all happy; its having breakfast together that causes all the trouble.?Irish Proverb Mango Fruit Salad with Apricots, Melon, Cherries & basilIt's the month of May, & MANGO, the king of fruits, rules the roost here in India. As far as the eye can see, it's mangoes all the way. In the midst of this, Arundati @Escapades is hosting this month's Weekend Breakfast Blogging (WBB) #22; it's has been aptly christened 'May Mango Madness'. As she dramatically states, "Melting moments of May have turned up the heat a notch higher?WBB, the event started by the lovely doctor at Saffron trail, stops by at Escapades this month." With mangoes going for less than a dollar a kilo here, it is complete madness. To add to it, the Escapades lady has been on my case to send her an entry & soon. SMSing, googling, calling...I am now stressed enough to post this immediately! Oh, the pressures of modern day existence & blogging are enough to give me sleepless nights; throw i...

Mango Memories: Spicy Mango Chuteny/Pickle
2008-05-15 09:57:00
Mangoes here, mangoes there, and mangoes every where! There they are swinging along on a laden tree; Here they are tightly packed in a wooden cartoon. There they are neatly sliced and piled on a plate, Here they are pickled and brined to perfection. It?s a season of Mango Mania. - By Yours Truly Sia Wordsworth ;)It is and it will always be mangoes that rule my world and my childhood memories. Forget all exotic fruits- pineapple, peach, kiwi, plum, berries; nothing can ever come quite close to magnificent Mangifera Indica in flavour, taste or aroma. It?s a same story every year. Just one look at them and I start reminiscing about the Mango Season, the season of the king of fruits, back home in India.Come summer and it meant only one thing for me and my sister, long vacation at Paternal Granny?s home. The memories of those sunny, glorious summer days of endless fun, pranks and digging our teeth into succulent mangoes warm my heart even today. Granny?s house was just like many other be...

Kairicha Panha (Raw Mango Juice Drink)
2008-05-12 15:05:00
I am currently experiencing a Mango Mania. I think ,talk ,eat ,breathe Mangoes. And this is the case inspite of the fact that I am in UK not in India. So you can imagine the level of my Mania when I am in India. Why only me , I think everybody in India and particularly from Maharashtra (that's the state I come from) is happily in the clutches of this Mango Mania in the months of April and May. The Alphonso Mango or Haapus Aamba ,which is rightfully called the King of Mangoes makes a very royal entry in the markets at this time of the year and it is THE fruit to be enjoyed. Forget the bananas, apples and all other ordinary fruit. Enjoy Haapus while it is available in tonnes. It is the Pride of Maharashtra. It's this Haapus that makes even the hottest of summer days bearable. In my parents house and at my in-laws too Haapus is always bought in huge boxes. This box is called a Peti and one peti contains approx 5 dozen mangoes . One peti is followed by the next in quick succession and t...

Tandoori Paneer Tikka with Mango Dressing

I've said it before and I'll say it again; if there's one thing you'd want to make and serve to your guests without thinking twice, its Paneer! No matter how you serve it, there's hardly a chance you'd go wrong. One such crowd favorite is the Tandoori Paneer Tikka, succulent cubes of paneer marinated and grilled or baked in a "tandoori oven", then served with grilled vegetables. Celebrate! Its Cinco de Mango! (Round Up)
2008-05-05 12:08:00
anima della festa/life of the party Let?s celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Cinco de Mango! When I launched this event I mentioned that, after being contacted by Fleishman-Hillard, on behalf the National Mango Board about trying some mango recipes, I thought it would be fun to promote their Cinco de Mango party with a blog event with the same name. I admit?.I was a little worried for a little while, thinking Smita?s contribution would be the only dish next to mine. While that would have been fine, especially since it looks like such a delicious Parfait, more contributions finally arrived. This has been a fun event to host with wonderful Mango recipes. Thanks to everyone who participated.I think the non-National Mango Board would be perfect additions to their website. What do you think? Let us know if they contact you to put your recipe on the website! Not that by Fleishman-Hillard said that would happen, but how cool would that be? I mean, seriously? I didn?t see any Tofu or Stuffed Chi...

MANGO YOGURT PANNA COTTA...A TANGO WITH MANGO!

??a big part of cooking is choosing the ingredients. And a big part of serving is doing it with pride? Ruth Reichl Mango Yogurt Panna Cotta...light & deliciousWith the mango season finally upon us, it's difficult to stay away from this sensuous fruit. It is enticing, it is mesmerising, & it is bursting with juicy sweetness. The season will last the next 3-4 months & I intend to use this luscious fruit as much as I can! I guess you will see quite a few mango posts, some healthy & others not entirely so, popping outta my blog this summer (it's already 42 degrees C here; small mercies that mangoes don't melt!!!) Looks & tastes good...both in the bowl & upside down! This is one such fruity adventure to herald the beginning of the mango season here, & is a healthy dessert...a satisfying fresh panna cotta; almost harbouring on the creamier edge of a flavoured yogurt but more indulgent! Royal Foodie Joust - Mango Pastry Puffs
2008-04-29 15:07:00
Mango Pastry PuffsThis was probably not one of my finest hours. This whole month has been a real challenge for me. I have messed up so many recipes and meals that I was starting to wonder if it was all going to fall back in place! One thing that I have learned from this past month is that everything that I cook or bake has a bit of me in it. If I am not feeling good (too much stress, distracted, busy, worried etc...) nothing I make will turn out right. But on the other hand if I am feeling good (which honestly is my normal state!!!) my food is great. I have never really noticed before the impact that this had on all of our food. Maybe that is because normally I don't let too much get to me but when it does boy is it an avalanche and I have felt the pure weight of it this month. Things are so much better now but that brings me to my Royal Foodie Joust entry for this month...The Royal Foodie Joust is a monthly event that is normally hosted by Jenn the Left Over Queen but see...
How to Make Mango Body Butter

I had one beautiful mango at home and wanted to eat something sweet, so I prepared mango ice cream served in a filo basket with white chocolate bottom.Ingredients:1 mangojuice of 1 lime1 tabelspoon sugar100 ml heavy cream1 egg yolkfilo doughbutter, meltedwhite chocolateCut mango in chunks and puree with lime juice. Add heavy cream, egg yolk, sugar and let the ice cream maker do the rest of the job. Butter a muffin form, add one sheet filo, butter it and add two more. Bake for 40-50 seconds on 200°C. While they are still hot add chopped chocolate. After they are cool add mango ice cream and some choco chunks on top.
