Stronger Family Medicine in 2012
2012-01-05 13:22:00
Remember the ancient days of medblogging (like in the early 2000s) when someone would write an entire blog post responding to another blog post? I know in this age of the 140 character twitter posts and "thumbs up" facebook responses, people may not be that familiar (hehe). But, this is a reaction to AAFP President, Glen Stream, MD, post entitled "Lets's Make Ourselves - And Family Medicine - Stronger in 2012."  @AAFPPrez: And I remain confident of the ability of family physicians to transform health care despite a disappointing and frustrating session of Congress in 2011. We will continue our advocacy efforts in 2012 -- in both the public and private sectors -- regarding payment and other issues vital to the future of family medicine.  It's hard to believe that just 2 weeks ago that many in the physician community, including me, were focused on the impending Medicare payment cut through talking about it and blogging about it. It's also hard to belie...

Here at Coolmristuff.com we want to see what new technological advances GE is making in the medical field today. How will MRI, CT, &  PET make differences in the way routine diagnostic exams are done? What will be next? Will there ever be one scanner that does everything? hmm?………sta-y tuned. http://www.gereports.com/fro m-the-first-x-rays-to-molecular--medicine/     Albert Einstein once noted that “imagination is more important than knowledge.” Yesterday on Capitol Hill, Michael Harsh, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at GE Healthcare, quoted Einstein’s maxim in remarks at a U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging forum on the future of healthcare called “Aging in Am...

It is perfectly reasonable to believe that in the course of a very old civilization, herbal discoveries may have been made and passed on which have a genuine therapeutic benefit. After all, to this day a large part of the pharmacopeia is of herbal origin. And there are many places where Chinese herbalists ...

2011 CAFP Family Medicine Summit: Part 2
2011-10-17 15:09:00
Just wanted to get some initial thoughts down following the Family Medicine Summit organized by the California Academy of Family Physicians. I'll have some more developed thoughts in a later post. These initial thoughts were from the plane going from that meeting to the Mayo Clinic Social Media Summit - the meeting I'm at right now. First of all, thanks again to the California Academy of Family Physicians for the invitation to speak. The audience was mainly Family Medicine Residents and medical students. From my understanding, the registration numbers exceeded expectations (I take full credit for that - Hehe). It's always energizing to me to present to residents & students. The opening keynote was from CAFP President Dr. Carol Havens. She asked the audience for words that they think of when you hear "Family Physician." And, as you can see from this twitpic, the audience came up with a huge list of Family Physician qualities. My favorites are "comprehensive care," "revolution,...

I'll also be on a panel this afternoon with my good friend Dr. Jay Lee and well be talking about Family Medicine Leadership & Advocacy in our session "Leading with Social Media." There are also great clinical topics and a residency fair to take place here tomorrow. Shout out to those of you who are checking out my website for the first time. Welcome! 2011 CAFP Family Medicine Summit
2011-10-09 23:34:00
Thanks to the California Academy of Family Physicians for the invitation to present at the 2011 Family Medicine Summit which will take place this coming weekend on October 15-16, 2011 at the Sheraton Gateway LAX. I'm going to be taking my Social Media and Family Medicine story all the way to Los Angeles from my home here in Ohio. I'll also be part of a panel talking about leading through social media. The conference schedule for this meeting looks great! The kickoff will be a keynote talk with CAFP President Carol Havens, MD entitled, "What family medicine is and what it means to us, our patients and our lives." There are other leadership and advocacy topics. In addition, there are clinical topics and even a residency fair at the conclusion of the meeting. In the video above, you'll see a video promo for the meeting. I'm bringing some equipment with me to possibly live video stream some sessions during the Family Medicine Summit. I don't know if it's going to work or if the ba...

Will Court Decision Topple A Top Sathya Sai Teacher? Male Sexual Abuse Case
2011-07-22 11:36:00
STOP PRESS! Breaking NEWS ...... This morning, Friday, I received important news, the details of which are being wrapped up in an Indian High Court today. Until I access the notes, I shall wait and examine the details, and check on what those on the spot have to report. Witnesses to the court proceedings made such comments as: "Our side had only three 'suits' (ed. i.e., lawyers or solicitors). The Sathya Sai lot had no fewer than thirteen!! Our three advocates ran rings around them. The judge removed the gag". One of the family members I spoke to, who along with other family, have long suffered the effects of Sai betrayal, was so overjoyed at the routing of a formidable accomplice of Sathya Sai Baba that he told me: "I was so happy that I leapt into my swimming pool forgetting that I had my Sat(ellite)Phone in my pocket. I have to get a new one" .... Prison Sentence - More Sentences To Come? I can attest that there is growing determination among those who have t...
What holistic medicine can do for athletes (and the rest of us)
2011-07-11 13:01:00
I recently interviewed  Dr. Diana White of Chicago Family Wellness. Right now many Chicago athletes are in training mode. That means they are more than likely experiencing fatigue, injuries and deficiencies. Some may even seek alternative medicine to improve performance. Dr. White is a board certified naturopathic physician. You are probably wondering what that is....
Head of Sai Baba Mega Dollar Hospital At Puttaparthi Resigns. Others Quitti
2011-06-26 03:34:00
I only met Dr A.N. Safaya once, when I lengthily interviewed him at the Sri Sathya Sai Superspeciality Hospital for the Puttaparthi-based magazine 'Spiritual Impressions', which is distributed internationally. My impression was of a gracious, deeply dedicated man. He is highly respected in India and abroad in the medical profession. I venture to predict that, given a probing government enquiry into the circumstances of Sathya Sai Baba's death, the circumstances of Dr Safaya's resignation, and of other medical and nursing staff at the Sai hospital, will show that forces on the Sathya Sai Central Trust, and certain of their agents, have been grossly unscrupulous. And, more widely, criminal. There are very serious allegations arising in news coverage that those around Sathya Sai Baba prior to his admission to the hospital where he died on 25 April withheld vital medical information from Dr Safaya and other medical experts in attendance. From other flows of information we are rec...

5 years ago, I was training for IM Madison, while riding my bike, I managed to crack my knee cap, tear a tendon and the cartilage in my knee tore to the point where it looked like Frosted Flakes, it wasn't good.My leg was such a mess, I had to have a specific surgery called microfracture.  This is where I met Dr. Brian Cole from Midwest Orthopedics at Rush.  Not only is Cole the surgeon for the Bulls and the White Sox, he is one of the foremost experts in micro fracture type surgery. The details of microfracture are many, but in a nut shell, they harvested my remaining cartilage and sent it off to a lab to grow me new...
Bad Medicine: The Tragic Story of Disease Rock: 1974-1988
2011-04-28 08:00:00
Every generation's music reflects the unique struggles that it faced. Slavery and sharecropping gave us the Negro Spiritual; the plight of the urban poor gave us the blues; and Vietnam gave us Freedom Rock, to name just a few examples. Overlooked until now, however, is the sub-genre of rock music that arose from the frustration of the youth of the 70s and 80s in their attempts to get access to quality health care. A new book by Dr. Saul Smeckler is aimed at changing that. In Bad Medicine: The Tragic Story of Disease Rock: 1974-1988, Smeckler argues that many rock songs of this era were literal cries for help. Rock musicians who were just starting out tended to be poor, spent a lot of time on the road, and were part of a "macho rock star culture that discouraged visiting free clinics," says Dr. Smeckler. Five chapters of Bad Medicine are devoted to the lead singer of Foreigner, Lou Gramm. In 1977, Gramm began experiencing frequent chills, as indicated by the song "Cold as Ic...

Obama Claims Power to Decide if Your Medicine is Too Expensive to be Allowe
2010-12-10 20:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston It's very easy for Obamacare supporters to scoff at the whole idea that there are "death panels" ensconced in Obama's health care power grab. But the fact of the matter is that they exist in a defacto form. One of those defacto death panels is the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB), an agency invented under Obamacare that has no congressional oversight and will be able to summarily cancel your drug prescriptions as paid for by Medicare. The IPAB is not well known by Americans, but it is a 15-member board appointed by the president and while members are confirmed by the Senate, the board is not otherwise answerable to anyone but the president. As to its...
Moss could be some nice medicine
2010-11-01 22:12:00
Nor will we and that is sad. Put aside your feelings for Moss for a minute. 6'4". Stop right there. Who is our tallest WR currently on the roster? DA at 6'2". That right there should be all the selling point you need. Our receivers need a GPS to find out which route to take. Randy just needs to go straight, jump, catch, touchdown. Crap, that would be to simple for Martz. If Chicago is not going to do anything but play musical chairs on the offensive line or bring in players that don't play (Grant) then what could hurt giving Cutler someone to go up and catch his balls while Cutler is getting his handed to him? Reality is...

Johnny Isakson Receiving Campaign Support from Socialized Medicine Champion
2010-09-17 01:56:00
Johnny Isakson Receiving Campaign Support from Socialized Medicine Champion, Mitt Romney   ATLANTA, GA – September 17, 2010 – It is interesting for the Donovan campaign to note that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will be coming to Georgia to support Johnny Isakson’s bid to be reelected as U.S. Senator.   Governor Romney pushed forward Massachusetts’ socialized medicine bill, better known as “Romney Care”.  Health care insurance premiums are now rising faster in Massachusetts than in any other state.  Following Romney Care enactment, the number of doctors and other medical providers in the state has significantly decreased.  Many Massachusetts patients hoping to make a health care provider appointment face the longest waiting periods in the Nation.  It isn’t rationing, but to people like Chuck Donovan’s parents, longtime residents in Massachusetts, it certainly feels like it.  Chuck’s parents know better than to miss ap...

Abdu?l-Baha on Diet and Medicine

I remember reading the quote below from Abdu’l-Baha many years ago and wondering exactly how in the world it would be possible to cure serious diseases with diet. Isaac Hayes for Congress: Pelosi's Blitzkrieg to Government Medicine
2010-03-16 23:38:00
From the Hays for Congress (2nd District) campaign... CHICAGO: The following statement was released today by Rev. Isaac C. Hayes, GOP nominee for Congress in IL-2, in response to Speaker Nancy Pelosi's move to use the "self-executing rule". Speaker Pelosi has yet to secure the necessary votes in the House of Representative to pass the Senate's version of health care reform. The Wall Street Journal reports the Speaker could ask the House Rules Committee to change the rules that would allow the House to vote on the reconciliation measures without voting on the actual Senate version. Hayes said, "the Speaker is not listening. America has said no for more than a year, yet she is stealthily considering the self-executing rule...

"Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you. What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson? Joltin' Joe has left and gone away." From the song, Mrs. Robinson, by Simon & Garfunkel Earlier this year, in a post entitled, China Has Health Care Too I talked about health care as one of the great opportunities for foreign businesses in China: A few months ago I was on a China panel at Northwestern's Kellogg Business School where, among other things, we were asked to list China's best opportunities. I stressed that because I am not a China business expert, I would have to answer the question based entirely on what I was seeing of my firm's clients and, based on that, I listed health care, technology, and food. If I had to pick just one of the three, I would pick hea...
Introduction to Ayurvedic Medicine
2009-08-21 00:45:00
As the world becomes more dangerous, new and more terrifying health conditions rear their ugly head at every juncture. Modern medicine often doesn?t seem to be up to the task of dealing with these diseases, which have root causes that may be nutritional, environmental, or even psychological. Many people have started turning to the ancient ways of curing diseases, with herbal, natural, and Ayurvedic medicine. In this article, I will describe the principal tenets of Ayurvedic medicine so you can decide if it is right for you. As always, consult a doctor before embarking on a course of treatment on your own.Ayurvedic medicine was first documented in the Vedas, the ancient texts that describe life in pre-colonial India. Ayurveda literally translates as ?the science of life,? and remains an influential path of treatment in much of Southeast Asia to this day. The essential concept of Ayurvedic medicine teaches that the body is composed of seven principal substances, and a healthy individua...

The complete article is available as a printable pdf file from the Munich Personal RePEc Archive (MPRA) below:http://mpra.ub.uni-muench-en.de/16515/ Cosmetic dermatology is a unique specialty where clinical medicine has a legitimate but often detested relationship with business. There are people lined up on either side of the hazy line between medicine and business, each group trying to understand the other. True clinical dermatologists consider cosmetic dermatology an imprecise and vague specialty.(1)A cosmeceutical, is conventionally defined as a cosmetic product claimed to have drug-like properties.(2) The term cosmeceutical is a portmanteau of the words "cosmetic" and "pharmaceutical” and is not recognized by Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A cosmeceutical is not subject to FDA review and approval processes.(3) Medical devices used in cosmetic dermatology range from cautery machines to lasers. Injectable enhancement products like Botox®(4) and dermal fillers ar...

Childbirth Medicine Needs Reform
2009-05-21 23:58:00
Childbirth is an example of how the intensive and expensive U.S. brand of medicine has failed to deliver better results and may be doing more harm than good. As the number one cause of hospital admissions, childbirth accounts for more than $79 billion in hospital charges alone. Pregnancy is the most expensive condition for both private insurers and Medicaid. The financial toll of maternity care on private insurers (employers) and Medicaid (taxpayers) is huge. Maternity care therefore plays a considerable role in escalating healthcare costs, which increasingly threaten the financial stability of families, employers, and federal and state budgets. Cesareans Out of Control The cesarean rate in the U.S. is higher than in most other developed nations. And in spite of a standing government goal of reducing such deliveries, the U.S. has set a new record every year for more than a decade. Once reserved for cases in which the life of the baby or mother was in danger, the cesarean is now ...
