Friday Flashback ? Making Friends Through Meditation

Of the 15,000+ photos I took on my trip, this is one of my favorites.  Maybe it’s the zen-like smiles we are all offering the camera after three days of meditation, yoga, and Buddhist teachings from our American monk.  Or the healthy effects of vegetarian meals.  Or the great friendships I formed. St Jerome and Meditation

Caravaggio, ( Michelangelo Merisi ) (b. 1571, Caravaggio, d. 1610, Porto Ercole)St Jerome in Meditation1605-06Oil on canvas, 118 x 81 cmMuseum of the Monastery of Santa Maria, Monserrat (Museo del Monasterio de Santa Maria). "In reality, to dialogue with God, with his Word, is in a certain sense a presence of Heaven, a presence of God. To draw near to the biblical texts, above all the New Testament, is essential for the believer, because "ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ". ... Truly "in love" with the Word of God, he [St Jerome] asked himself: "How could one live without the knowledge of Scripture, through which one learns to know Christ himself, who is the life of believers?" (Ep. 30, 7). The Bible, an instrument "by which God speaks every day to the faithful" (Ep. 133, 13), thus becomes a stimulus and source of Christian life for all situations and for each person. To read Scripture is to converse with God: "If you pray", he writes to a young Roman noblewoma...
Bullfrog Symphony: A Meditation Video

I want to share the mystery and beauty of the fresh-water marsh with you. If I wait until this video is fine-tuned, I may never post it! So I thought I'd do it now.You will hear the frogs and peepers singing in concert, the gentle wind blowing past, and the sound of my snapping of still shots. I'm sitting in a rocking boat, so the stability of the camera is not what it should be.But if you turn your sound all the way up and give it a listen, I think you'll find it relaxing! All video and text copyright Lynda Lehmann. UK Easter 2009 Togathering ? FISU Meditation
2009-04-10 18:21:00
The Easter Togathering in Norwich was amazing. Despite the numbers, everyone said how intimate the atmosphere felt and had a definite deep tranquillity. There were some amazing Satsangs covering subjects from the Mind to the examination of certain religious truth and prophets. Karma was also a topic with the introduction of the concept of ?providence?, a similar concept to eastern Karma but which originated in the Hebrew Bible. Many other philosophical subjects were embraced, the majority of which centred on spiritual unfoldment, meditation and the raising of our personal spiritual consciousness.

Worshipping onscreen: a megachurch meditation
2009-02-15 07:45:00
Sorry for the long silence – we’ve been in transit to Sydney all week, and I haven’t had much internet access. This morning, out of curiosity, I went along to a service at a famous Sydney megachurch. It was quite an experience. They had it all: the hustle and bustle of important people; the man with a torch and walkie-talkie who met us at the door and briskly ushered us to our seats; the dimly lit auditorium with its brightly coloured stage; the use of words like “vision” and “awesome”; the advertising segments (last week’s sermon was available on DVD for only $14.95); the slick businessmen with their Rolexes and their glamorous wives; the exuberant music performed by handsome musicians and voluptuous singers (I confessed to my wife that I had committed adultery in my heart all the way through “All I Need Is You”); the give-your-life-to-Jesus altar call; and throughout all this, the ubiquity of what Peter Berger has called “the Protestant smile.” There were n...

Stillness - Meditation and Anxiety
2009-01-21 22:42:00
I have blogged before about meditation and its beneficial effects on the treatment and control of anxiety. In these posts I have mainly concentrated on Mindfulness Meditation, which is very powerful and still the single thing I would recommend to all anxiety sufferers. Recently I came across "Stillness Meditation" which looks very interesting.  There is a book, which is sadly out of print, called "In Stillness Conquer Fear". It is about a woman's (the author) struggle to overcome agoraphobia and her eventual release (cure!) through a disciplined meditation practice. Deep Zen Meditation - Click Here This meditation practice, to which I believe the author of the aforementioned book, Pauline Mckinnon, gave the name "Stillness Meditation", is very simple. Although I should say that despite the fact that it is simple you still, paradoxically, need to practice regularly in order to achieve stillness. Like all things, you improve with practice. So...

Free Transcendental Meditation
2008-05-12 05:30:00
When I started seeking meditation and joined a yoga and meditation class, my teacher encouraged me to read books on meditation. It is in one of the books by Deepak Chopra I learned about transcendental meditation. Reading more about meditation, I came to know that this is most popular method of meditations. I naturally wanted to practice this. When I met the qualified and official teacher of this meditation, I came to know that I need to pay for learning it. Not having money I could not learn transcendental at that time but I continued my interest in it and started reading more about it. To my surprise, there is no book which actually teaches the steps of that kind of meditation. What I was looking for was to learn free transcendental meditation and there was no free course anywhere, If at all I wanted to learn then I had to pay thousands of dollars.I continued to search for a way to learn the transcendental meditation freely as I did not like the teacher whom I met years bac...

How To Relax With Meditation
2008-05-06 07:58:00
In our stressed out society, it is helpful to find effective tools to help us relax body, mind and spirit. Many individuals find that using a meditation technique can be a real lifesaver, primarily when you are in the midst of a difficult or troubling period of your life. How do I Meditate? Is Meditation Difficult? It's not as hard as you think. The idea revolves around focusing your thoughts on a particular relaxing image or experience over a specific time-even just a few minutes per day. This way, your mind is able to de-stress. Your stress is relieved so your body can recuperate and relax; toxic build ups are also decreased. You will find that while you're meditating your breathing slows, your blood pressure is reduced, the muscles relax, apprehension and irritability are reduced. Stressful thoughts and lactic acid are eliminated, clearing your mind and heart. Headaches and stress are also lessened. These are only some of the documented mental and physical advantages to meditation...
Meditation - Getting started
2008-05-05 22:03:00
It is not only me, there are thousands of people who started to meditate and one fine day gave up. When I wanted to know why I gave up on meditation, I had no valid reason. Mostly people answer 'just like that. I was not feeling anything'. I learned meditation from my father and was very curious to know how it works. I had to practice everyday at least for 15mts. I had the patience for 1 week. After that, all gone in air. When he asked why? I had no answer. I knew I gave up because I felt lazy and this lead to a point where I was frustrated and depressed with myself for not realising my inner self through meditation. No art can be mastered in a day. All of us know this, but still want to be the best overnight. Could this happen? No way. Any art comes to you only if you practice and meditation is an art. An art of realising oneself. This can be achieved if and only if you practice. The first basic thing in meditation is to find a Guru. Go in search of a Guru. There are a lot o...

Get Some Peace Of Mind With Yoga Meditation
2008-04-26 07:00:00
We live in a hectic world. The way of life in the west is spreading all across the world, and there are fewer places to find the tranquility and peace of mind we seek. The hustle and bustle, the rush and get there on time is causing humans to stress not only there bodies, but also the environment. No wonder the environment is facing problems. As humans we began by laboring, and then thought we would win life with getting faster, and having technology to help us. This has not been the case however, we have come to a time, when all this technology is making us work faster and not be able to take it easy. Where is the peace of mind gone, and can yoga meditation help humanity? People need answers, and in a world where we don’t have time to give to ask questions and find answers we have created ourselves a confinement with no freedom. The major religions in the world are having a hard time keeping up. There is one wisdom that may help humanity and provide us with that peace of mind...

Meditation Is Medication - Is It True That Meditating Is Medication For You
2008-04-24 07:00:00
Humanity has ever sped forward. In the west we have a totally different view of what medication really is. For science, the spiritual aspect is generally left to people to decide on and label. This unbiased view though is a great position has caused the continuance of many health problems. This article may have some controversial thoughts on health, and your views may differ. I suggest you read with an open mind, so you can find the truth for yourself. This is important because science does not include the spiritual. The psychologist looks at your brain, rather than the true aspects of your mind. Freedom comes from awareness. When you see a problem, you can fix it, but when you can’t see that problem, there is no way to fix it. How many thousands of people have mental health problems? Whether that be depression or schizophrenia? Science has held an impartial view. They have left the spiritual aspects to mystics and prophets. This neglect however has caused many problems. The p...
