Virus Ruled Out as Cause of Mental Illness
2012-02-01 12:33:00 A viral disease long suspected of possibly causing mental illness has apparently been acquitted, as a blinded case-control study found no association between the Borna disease virus (BDV) and mental health disorders. Prior studies have linked the virus to mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorder and dementia. Investigators were open-minded to the possibility as genetic fragments and antibodies to this RNA virus causes behavior disorders in a range of mammals and birds. Moreover, although the results have been inconclusive, traces of the virus have been found to be prevalent in psychiatric patients.
International health experts call for a special UN session on mental health
2012-01-18 05:20:00 A group of international health experts has called for a special session of the United Nations (referred to as UNGASS - United Nations General Assembly Special Session) to focus global attention on mental, neurological, and substance use disorders as a core development issue requiring commitments to improve access to care, promote human rights, and strengthen the evidence on effective prevention and treatment. Writing in this week?s PLoS Medicine, the health experts, led by Vikram Patel from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK and Judith Bass from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, USA say: ?The time has come for recognition at the highest levels of global development, namely the UN General Assembly, of the urgent need for a global strategy to address the global burden of MNS disorders.? Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders (MNS disorders ? a relatively new acronym coined by the World Health Organization to refer to the complete range of disor...

2011-12-28 04:21:00 Photo by Michael BaronJohn Sickels of Minor league ball has posted his 2012 preliminary Mets top 20 prospect list. Overall, the assessment of the system seems pretty fair and it's nice to see the farm returning to relevancy. The system appears quite stacked in regard to pitching but still a bit thin in the hitting dept., as they say; Rome wasn't built in a day.One comment Sickels made that did surprise me was in regard to SS/2B prospect Jordan Valdespin.12) Jordan Valdespin, 2B-SS, Grade C+: Will probably rank higher on other lists. Tools and athleticism stand out, developed more power this year, but high-maintenance mercurial personality and sloppy strike zone judgment make me wary that he'll fulfill his potential. source Minor League Ball I don't recall hearing about Valdespin's mercurial personality as Sickels put it, in fact the last thing I recalled hearing was Depodesta singing his praise.“I think at the Double-A level, a lot of the guys we h...

Reducing the treatment gap for mental, neurological, and substance use diso
2011-11-16 05:35:00 In this week?s PLoS Medicine, Shekhar Saxena of the WHO in Geneva, Switzerland and colleagues summarize the recent WHO Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) intervention guide that provides evidence-based management recommendations for mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) disorders. This guide is aimed at reducing the treatment gap for MNS disorders, which is more than 75% in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Further details and background material to the guide can be accessed on the WHO website The authors recommend that: ?In the near future, further efforts should be made to introduce formal evaluations of the capability of [treatment] programs to induce relevant and persistent changes, and to generate useful insights on how implementation in [low- and middle-income countries] should be conducted to maximize benefit at sustainable costs.? ### The PLoS Medicine Mental Health in Low- and Middle-Income Countries Collection, a seven-part series of artic...

Mental health tests don?t catch all troubled troops
2011-10-05 10:41:00 Mental health assessments given to all soldiers after deployment may miss many cases of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, according to a U.S. study. The research, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, involved about 3,500 soldiers who were in Iraq in 2007 to 2008 for their third deployment in six years. Before they returned to Fort Stewart, Georgia, they completed a standard, computer-based post-deployment health assessment, which includes questions on PTSD and other mental health problems. This is not anonymous, and is meant to spot problems and help connect them with care when they get home
Reports of Mental Health Disability Increase in U.S.
2011-09-23 16:35:00 The prevalence of self-reported mental health disabilities increased in the U.S. among non-elderly adults during the last decade, according to a study by Ramin Mojtabai, MD, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. At the same time, the study found the prevalence of disability attributed to other chronic conditions decreased, while the prevalence of significant mental distress remained unchanged. The findings will appear in the November edition of the American Journal of Public Health. ?These findings highlight the need for improved access to mental health services in our communities and for better integration of these services with primary care delivery,? said Mojtabai, an associate professor in the Bloomberg School?s Department of Mental Health. ?While the trend in self-reported mental health disability is clear, the causes of this trend are not well understood.? For the study, Mojtabai reviewed data from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey covering 3...
Sathya Sai Baba?s Deterioration: Long Mental and Physical Slide Into Chaos
2011-09-18 04:22:00 How many times must a charismatic figure, like a guru, err before people's mesmerization tapers, and, hopefully, ends. Before, that is, they begin to see the trail of anomaly, broken promises, and betrayed hopes? Commonly, infantile belief systems - however they may be dressed up to look all grown up - intrudes. Devotees are lost in adulating their idealized father or mother figure. They rationalize away absurdities and often downright lies. They feel comforted by the cultic group that feeds and shelters their sense of belonging. In the case of figures like Sai Baba, they think that the guru holds the power over their chances for heaven or hell. Sathya Sai Baba's minders did all that they could to hide the dreadful physical and mental wreck that he became in his last years. But it cannot be upheld that thousands of devotees from around the world did not see at least some of the signs. Certainly, the many doctors attending darshan or his interviews could not other than have noti...

Coma through mental depression
2011-03-26 06:37:00 Could mental depression lead a person to coma ? and be in a state of comatose over 8 months. I am keen to study the factors that led to this state , treatment given and mindset of a person after the person is back to lead a normal life. I learnt about this and felt that this could be a perfect story for Readers Digest for people who go through similar grind and become vulnerable to be pushed into depression. Depression Guide website gives information about this.Sweep ? an elegant cricket stroke has now become a part of regular armoury in modern day cricket. Reverse sweep is an innovative mirror image of regular sweep and often employed against a spin bowler whenever third man fielder is brought into the circle. Graham Gooch in Reliance Cup decimated India by employing regular sweep in the semi final at Mumbai. Today, England persisted with reverse sweep against Sri Lanka spinners and perished. They could not execute the stroke, but in the process lost wickets and the confidence to r...

Adolescents with severe mental disorders have never received treatment
2011-01-18 16:51:00 A recent study by Merikangas and colleagues published in the January 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (JAACAP) shows that only half of adolescents that are affected with severely impairing mental disorders ever receive treatment for their disorders. The researchers found that approximately one third of adolescents with any mental disorder received services for their illness (36.2%). Disorder severity was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of receiving treatment, yet only half of adolescents who were identified as having severely impairing mental disorders had ever received mental health treatment for their symptoms. In the article titled ?Service Utilization for Lifetime Mental Disorders in U.S. Adolescents: Results of the National Comorbidity Survey?Adolescent Supplement (NCS-A),? Dr. Merikangas and colleagues examined the rates of treatment for specific mental disorders in the NCS-A. The NCS-A is a national...

Screening Mandate Will Be Boon to Early Mental Illness Detection
2010-12-21 14:53:00 Private insurers and many Medicaid plans will be required to cover the cost of screening beneficiaries for psychiatric illness, which is expected to decrease the number of individuals whose mental illness goes undetected. Screening for psychiatric illness in adults and children nationwide is expected to increase as coverage mandates in the new health care law for both private and public insurance programs go into effect over the next few years. And that increase could help cut the rates of untreated mental illness, said mental health advocates. Supporters of increased access to mental health care gathered for a Capitol Hill briefing in November to hail the expected benefits of the health care reform law. Those benefits came via provisions that include a requirement that all health insurance plans participating in the new state health insurance exchanges?planned for launch by 2014 - cover services recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), the Advisory Commi...
Criminal Minds in Mental Health
2010-11-10 09:49:00 Why do people go to jail? What caused them to behave this way? What makes them different from everyone else? We can continue asking questions about criminal?s mental health status, but we are never going to find an answer that suits us, simply because there are too many illnesses and few solutions to repairing the illnesses. In fact, some of the causes of criminal behaviors are seated on the criminal justice?s doorstep. At the beginning of criminal justice came forth a bunch of so-called law enforcement groups that claim to bring forth justice. The twisted theories including flogging, beating, hanging, dismembering, public humiliation, beheading, and the list goes on and on. Therefore, we can see the root of criminals start with the criminal justice system. We all influenced by someone else and if our superior examples are illustrating violence to others, what message are they sending to the world? In fact, the first-known psychopath was recorded in the early 1800s. This person fo...

Can Those with Mental Illnesses Serve in the U.S. Military?
2009-11-07 12:26:00 I don?t think anyone should be surprised the answer is no. As per the United States Army?s regulation 40-501, the Standards of Medical Fitness, mental illnesses are disqualifying. Section 2-27 Learning, Psychiatric and Behavior Disorders provides an extensive list of specific disorders and conditions. In example, here are the specific rulings regarding mood disorders such as bipolar disorder: d. Current mood disorders including, but not limited to, major depression (296.2-3), bipolar (296.4-7), affective psychoses (296.8-9), depressive not otherwise specified (311), are disqualifying. (1) History of mood disorders requiring outpatient care for longer than 6 months by a physician or other mental health professional (V65.40), or inpatient treatment in a hospital or residential facility is disqualifying.

Ohio Budget Cuts Mental Health Funding
2009-07-15 17:37:00 July 1st was a very important day at the state house in Columbus. It was the day that a balanced state budget had to be passed. As usual, politics got in the way of that and they subsequently passed a 7-day budget as negotiations continued. During week one, the impasse continued, and a second 7-day state budget passed. Negotiations continued....Since I have been in Boston for the past few days, I've been curious to see what was going to happen to the state budget. When I checked the Columbus Dispatch website yesterday, I was surprised that an agreement was reached. In reading the quotes from the politicians, it was a budget that "no one" was happy with." Then, why did you pass it? That confuses me.The big winner was not the citizens of Ohio, but the racetracks of Ohio. Yes, the racetracks - and probably the Governor (when is he up for re-election again?) According to the article "Budget Plan, Keeping Score," "The state's seven horse tracks will get up to 2,500 video lottery termin...

2009-05-12 18:11:00 My brilliant friend sent me a funny video of a smart kid who wins a spelling bee being treated by news hosts as a freakazoid. My friend admitted to being both a brilliant kid--like that boy--and having to hide his brilliance.I thought about it and realized I was always a mental show-off?I was in spelling bees and math competitions, and proud of it. Plus, I knew that no matter how smart I thought I was or anyone said I was, my sister who is two years older, is smarter still. It helps to be around those who are better, faster, and stronger than we are. Our five-year-old, as an only-child, doesn?t have that humility reinforcement and is convinced she?s a genius. Mental Conditioning for Self Defense
2009-04-27 17:00:00 The term 'Mindset' gets thrown around a lot in the self-defense and training community, and a lot of people don't really understand it or articulate it well. Many of the "Survivor Mindset" and "Warrior Mindset" proponents talk about mental attributes as if they were bolt-on parts and once fully kitted out you will be ready. I would argue that it is a little more complicated than that.
