Dubai's Meem Gallery is currently hosting an exhibit (May 15th-July 5th) by Kanoo titled Fun With Fen--a series of digital prints that depicts famous American celebrities like Clint Eastwood, Angelina Jolie, Amy Winehouse, Will Smith and others in traditional Muslim garb. Something to really think about, especially regarding the current state of Middle Eastern diplomacy and tolerance.

BAD GIRLS BEHIND THE SCENES
2012-03-22 17:21:00
Sri Lankan recording artist M.I.A. recently dropped a video for her latest single "Bad Girls." It's probably an understatement to say that it made creative jaws drop. Not only was it beautifully shot in the open deserts of Saudia Arabia, the video also contains some hi-octane footage of the Middle Eastern car drifting scene, something that had yet to be captured so dramatically for Western eyes. Working with quite the talented team, including director Romain Gavras, M.I.A. now releases the behind-the-scenes to this epic project. You get the sense that all the styling, iconography, death defiance, and pure art behind the songstress' "alternatively political" music really shines through. Grab some popcorn and kick back for this one. So freakin' awesome!

Four New Dangers in the Middle East
2012-02-28 15:13:00
Ever since I was born in 1946, the Middle East has been at the core of the most enduring, most vexing, and most economically impactful conflicts on Earth. The region has generated eight major wars, scores of lesser skirmishes, plus a cascade of political assassinations, acts of terror and revolutions. It has triggered at least four global economic upheavals. It has repeatedly caused chaos in the world’s most advanced industrial nations. And now, despite one of the most concerted — and frustrating — multinational peace initiatives ever mounted by the global powers, it is about to do it AGAIN! Israel and Iran are on the brink of an all-out war. Syria is . . . → Read More: Four New Dangers in the Middle East
ROLLS-ROYCE RECORD YEAR
2012-01-09 15:47:00
Not sure about everyone else, but when we hear the phrase "global recession" we pretty much assume that all world markets are taking some kind of hit, no? Well, according to Rolls-Royce sales in 2011, such isn't necessarily the case for luxury car sales, in fact, the company reported its most successful year to date! The infamous makers of the Phantom sold a whopping 3,538 vehicles last year, 391 more vehicles than their last record year in 1978. It's also highly relevant to note that sales growth in worldwide markets had much to do with the feat. The company reports a 47-percent increase in the Asian Pacific region, 17 in North America, 23 in the Middle East, and a 30-percent growth at home in the UK. Astonishing. Further proof that while things may be globally awry, upper class spending's got more than a healthy pulse!

Syria, Iran, and the Balance of Power in the Middle East
2011-11-28 19:12:00
Let’s peel our eyes away from the eurozone disaster momentarily and take a look at another crisis – one with just as much potential to impact our global financial system. As we’ve discussed in Outside the Box before, Iran’s trump card is not its nuclear capability but rather its opportune location next to the very narrow, very important Strait of Hormuz … through which no less than 40% of the world’s seaborne oil passes. As the US leaves Iraq, Iran is ready and waiting to fill the void and extend its regional influence. So where’s the next turf war? A shaky Syria, where the Iranian-Saudi-US balance of power will continue to play out. If you haven’t been following the . . . → Read More: Syria, Iran, and the Balance of Power in the Middle East
