Australian mining towns 'top target for property investment'
2012-05-09 02:00:00
The cost of buying properties in Australia's mining towns is making them a popular target among investors. This is the opinion of Brett Alegre-Wood, founder of Your Property Club and an investor himself, who explained "affordability is going up" in these settlements, which has resulted in "huge" demand for homes in these areas. He added there are still viable opportunities to be found in large cities such as Melbourne and Sydney, but stressed it is important to take a long-term view when purchasing real estate in such areas. According to the Housing Industry Association (HIA) and JELD-WEN Population and Residential Building Report published last month, Victoria is the place to watch. Nine of the top 20 hotspots identified by the research were in the state, with Whittlesea North, Wyndham South and Cardinia - Pakenham taking second, third and fifth positions respectively. The HIA figures are based on the value of the building work approved in these areas, as ...

In most instances, it pays to focus your investment research on companies that are delivering great results. Rising profits, thanks to market share gains, hot new products, international expansion and other factors often lead to a surging valuation for a company. The Best Mining and Energy Stock Bargains on the Market
2012-04-18 17:30:00
There's an old saying on Wall Street that investors should look to the income statement for upside and the balance sheet for downside protection. But for mining and energy stocks, this axiom has been spun on its head. Income-statement metrics are forcing many of these stocks down, but their balance sheets point to the way to vigorous upside (while that downside protection also remains in place). You can find no greater example of this than copper and gold miner Freeport McMoran (NYSE: FCX). Copper prices have fallen from around $4.50 a pound in early 2011 to a recent $3.60, dampening the company's profit prospects. Adding insult, the company is temporarily seeing reduced output at a key Indonesian mine . . . → Read More: The Best Mining and Energy Stock Bargains on the Market

Gold Mining in West Africa Promises Growth: Mark Lackey
2012-03-19 21:00:00
The Gold Report: Mark, do you agree with Patricia Mohr, Scotiabank’s vice president of economics, that gold would need further reflation or another round of quantitative easing to rise above $2,000/ounce (oz) in the near term? Mark Lackey: Higher inflation in the Western world would certainly help push gold over $2,000/oz in the next 18 to 24 months. But inflation is not the only factor underlying the price of gold. On the demand side, you have growing demand among the middle class in India and China. On the supply side, we are seeing that companies are not always getting to production as quickly as they anticipate. Given all of these factors, gold could top $2,000/oz even without a significant . . . → Read More: Gold Mining in West Africa Promises Growth: Mark Lackey

Scott Jobin-Bevans: PDAC, under the leadership of newly appointed Executive Director Ross Gallinger, will be conducting a strategic review involving the board of directors, staff and gathering membership input. There are a number of issues facing the association and the industry, and I am sure that human resources challenges will surface as a key issue. Rare Earth Metals? Not Your Father?s Mining Biz: Byron King
2012-01-31 22:00:00
The Critical Metals Report: No year has brought higher highs and lower lows to the rare earth space than 2011. Do you expect the same volatility in 2012? Byron King: The short answer is yes. In this market, anything is possible. In 2011 we saw highs toward the beginning of the year because there was a lot of enthusiasm for the technology metals space. We experienced lows towards the end of 2011 because there was a general market selloff. It didn’t matter if you were stock-picking. The falling tide sucked everything down. The Gold Report: Fayyaz, in June 2008, using readily available economic data, you wrote that the global economy was on the verge of financial collapse. What do those sources tell you about where the global economy is headed today? Fayyaz Alimohamed: In November 2006, I predicted that the U.S. was headed into a recession. Seven months later, the Bear Stearns funds cracked, beginning the crisis. By June 2008 it was obvious to me that the crisis would escalate into a crash. Today, the U.S. cannot meet its gargantuan future unfunded liabilities. Europe and Japan face debt levels that ensure eventual sovereign debt defaults and declining standards of living. Mining Boom in Quebec: Alain-Jean Beauregard
2011-12-23 23:00:00
The Gold Report: The province of Quebec where Geologica is based offers some of the best infrastructure and mineral exploration incentives of any state or province in North America. Why has Quebec embraced mining when so many other jurisdictions are working hard to prevent mining or mineral exploration at all? Alain-Jean Beauregard: Like forestry, mining has traditionally been a region developer in the province of Quebec. Native land issues have already been settled for large parts of the province. Mining is an important job creator?one of the most important in the province. It’s good income for the province because of revenues from taxes. Rare Earth Mining Innovations: Anthony Mariano

The Critical Metals Report: Dr. Mariano, let’s discuss some potential for rare earth elements (REEs) from a geological perspective. What is catching your attention outside of China? Anthony Mariano: Beach sand and river placer monazite occurs in plentiful supply in many countries outside of China. The rare earth oxide (REO) content of monazite is approximately 70 weight percent (wt%) and the distribution has a better intermediate REE content than bastnasite. Bastnasite is the world’s source at this time, and has been historically, for the light rare earth elements (LREEs). Year-end Buying Opportunities Abound in Mining Stocks: Louis James

The Gold Report: We’re now into year-end tax-loss selling season. How do you think 2011 will compare with previous years as far as the performance of resource stocks in the next several weeks and into 2012? Louis James: This should be an interesting year for tax-loss selling. Whether the market’s up or down, there is selling pressure at the end of the year. If people have a lot of gains, they want to sell underwater positions to offset them. If they have a lot of losses, they may do the same, planning to buy back in at the lower cost basis in the new tax year. NovaGold (NG): 'Exceptional bet' in mining
2009-07-01 14:00:00
"In the 2000s, as we’ve alternated between deflationary and inflationary worries, gold has been the only major investment to rise every year," says Stephen Leeb.In his The Complete Investor, he explains, "We think that many miners are exceptional bets today. And among our favorite gold investments is one that we hold in our small cap value model portfolio: NovaGold Resources (ASE: NG).""The case for mining stocks is that the price of gold rises faster than miners’ costs, allowing margins to increase."That’s not to deny the risks, such as possible shortfalls in production, sudden price increases, environmental costs, and so on. Still a miner that can increase production and maintain or boost margins will outperform the metal over time."NovaGold -- and its relationship with Barrick (NYSE: ABX) -- illustrates particularly well the potential a superior miner can have even when gold prices are flat. "Barrick, now Nova’s...
