Mississippi River Pool 2 Warm Up Tournament
2012-05-05 17:38:00 The title of this blog posts makes me chuckle a bit, because I fished this tournament as a fun tune-up for some other up coming events, but nothing about the day because of weather was warm what so ever. It was 44 degrees, raining and a stiff east wind when the tournament started and it only got colder that day.Even with the brutal conditions, it seemed there was a decent morning bite in the backwaters where we started. I had a limit by shortly after 8am casting a Big Bite Baits tube to shallow wood, rocks & weeds. I caught some small fish and some 16-17" class fish early in the day on this pattern. I stuck with it the rest of the day mixing in occasional reaction baits. I did catch a few bass on a 1/2oz Ayu Biovex Stangun spinnerbait, one fish on a D-Bomb and a couple on a jig, but I think all the fish weighed came on a tube. Not much for pictures, because it was a paper/measure tournament. I did take one quick pic of my 18-5/8" Largie! My best 5 fis...

2012-04-05 06:49:00 STARKVILLE, Mississippi (Reuters) - The Mississippi state Senate passed a bill on Wednesday to impose new regulations on facilities providing abortions that supporters of the state's only abortion clinic said could force it to close. The measure, which previously passed in the state House of Representatives, would requires physicians performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a local hospital and be board certified or eligible in obstetrics and gynecology. ...

MFBA TBF Minnesota State Championship - Mississippi River
2011-10-24 14:50:00 This past weekend I fished the TBF Minnesota State Championship out of Wabasha, MN on the Mississippi River. I only had one day to practice which was the Sunday before. During practice, I found one good group of largemouth on Lake Pepin and a couple good groups of smallmouth down in the river on main channel rock and wing dams.On day 1 of the tournament with the wind conditions I had committed to the lake, but made a couple wing dams spots on the way. I caught small keeper smallmouth on a sand drop and had some short strikes on my favorite Yellow Magic popper. Enough time wasted, I headed to the lake. My first stop produced 2 short smallies on topwater. I then headed to my largemouth area, I quickly got a chunky bass on a Red Eye Shad. I then started working the area with my jig and got a fish close to 3lbs, then another good'un on Tube Craw and another on a Phenix vibrating jig. I let that spot rest, got another keeper largie on a mo...

Mississippi River Walleye Tournament Results
2010-11-10 22:31:00 The Illinois Walleye Trail conducted its 2nd Tournament of the 2011 season on Sunday November 7, 2010 in Rapids City, Illinois on the Mississippi River. The teams found the water conditions were spotty with the river coming up 2 feet that week and a lot of grass coming down from up north. The key appeared to be finding some back eddies with cleaner water. A total of 101 fish was brought to scales with 12, six fish limits.

Mississippi River - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #2 - June 28, 200
2009-06-30 09:11:00 Yesterday was my 2nd Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament, I was able to get two days of practice in for this event. It sure would be nice to get some more time so I could expand my water and areas, but there is only so much time. Based on my practice, I had one really strong area that I felt good about and a couple back up areas, plus some stuff that I had fished in that past that I felt could produce a few bites in a pinch.I drew boat #15 and a heck of a nice co-angler named Sam. We arrived in my starting area and were the only boat there, I shut down a little short and used the trolling motor to get into position and as we approached I saw a surface swirl. All ready with my Yellow Magic Popper in hand, I started firing casts towards the area the fish were boiling and they started biting pretty fast and furious. A mixture of smallies and largemouths were biting, as well as some white bass and a walleye. Once the topwater fizzled I switched to a ...
Mississippi River - Pool 4 Practice
2009-06-25 21:08:00 This past Saturday I had a window to get some fishing in, so I decided to get down to Pool 4 to start practicing for my next Bassamaster Weekend Series tourney. Overall practice was hit and miss, found some fish in area that I practiced in for previous tournament, but its a long ways from Alma where we are launching from.Chunky bass that fell fer a Game Hawg creature bait on 3/16oz TT WeightMost of the other areas were hit and miss, but found one nice batch of fish relating to some grass, that was the bright spot of the day other then some ealry flipping and swim jig fish. Other then that, it was an awesome weather day on the river and Lake Pepin, made it easy to get around other then the boat traffic.I did catch some nice fish on a new bait that i just tried. KVD Perfect Plastics Game Hawg seems like a really nice bait, its like a Baby Brush How, but just a little bigger and some fine ribbing, very soft and scent built in. I would reccomend in trying a ...
Mississippi River Rumble Fantasy Fishing Group Winner!
2009-06-16 21:02:00 Congratulations to Rob Busse of Farmington, MN; he was the highest scoring member of my Bassin' Blog group for ESPN Fantasy Fishing at the Mississippi River Rumble event. I-t was nice to see someone new win an event. Here are Rob's comments on his winning line-up:"KVD is the obvious choice, especially when you?re not much of a bass fisherman like me and he?s the only name you recognize. The rest of the line-up is pure luck. I know a lot of people change their line-up every week to go with local guys and while that makes sense, I don?t want to be like everybody else. I also heard a number of times that it was not smart to keep Elton Luce on my team (and it certainly wasn?t for the prior tournaments), but I stuck with him. Mississippi River - Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #1 - May 31, 2009
2009-06-02 03:00:00 Based on my practice, I realized that winning this event would take some good fortune and the bass in my areas to grow, but I thought if I fished hard and fished clean I could put together a respectable finish and have chance to cash a check. My practice had not been stellar, but I had found a couple of areas holding fish both on Lake Pepin and down in the top of Wabasha backwaters; plus a few back up spots if I needed a fish near Red Wing. This tournament was a little unique, because I had never fished an event that launched out of Everts Resort on the north end of Pool 4 before. After running south through the Wisconsin channel, I started on a rocky area of Lake Pepin, my partner had one fish on that looked to be a keeper on a spinnerbait, other then that we caught several close but short fish on finesse jigs and Fork Craws. From there I went to my second spot on Pepin, my partner caught 1 on his spinnerbait and another on his jig. I ended up...
Mississippi River Pool 4 Practice Day 2
2009-05-29 21:15:00 Yesterday for the most part was a struggle for my dad & I on pool 4, our first area produced two small keeper smallies and the next 4 areas had zero action. Then on a hunch we decided to check a two other areas and we actually found some keeper largemouth & smallmouth in those areas, nothing great, but much better then nothing. Then with 5 minutes before we had to go, I caught this really nice 18.5" smallie on a White Flash 1/4oz Super K swim jig. This was probably the lone bright spot of my two days of prefishing thus far. At least its another cull in the BP Bass Derby.I will get out for a few hours on Saturday, but some of that time must be dedicated to finding Everts resort and best navigation route out of there. On a positive note, I have not burned my fish...... A strong practice does not always mean a good tournament and Vice Versa.RichLindgren.com Ric-h's Bassin' Forum Bass Fishing Tackle Blog
Mississippi River Pool 4 Practice Day 1
2009-05-29 21:15:00 Memorial Day, my dad and I got out on Pool 4 to start preparing for the upcoming Bassmasters Weekend Series tournament on May 30th. We decided to launch from Red wing and check some areas in Lake Pepin and stuff closer to the launch ramp. The first two areas we checked produced some decent bites on a Secret Weapon Lures Quickstrike spinnerbait that I custom built for the water conditions, which were fairly muddy just about every where we fished. I also picked up a few decent fish on a White Flash Super K Swim Jig. The 3rd area produced one good smallie, the next handful of areas were spotty to say the least. At the very end of the day we found two more areas where we got several bites, a few keepers but nothing over about 2lbs. Again the spinnerbait & swim jig produced, I also finally got a few fish on my trusty 3/8oz PB&J Tru-Tungsten jig. Overall, I think I got a few areas that can produce a check cashing bag, but on my next trip I plan to search ou...
Mississippi River - Pool 2 - Club Tournament #1 - May 17, 2009
2009-05-21 07:56:00 Sunday was my first club tournament of this year on Pool 2 of the Mississippi River. Because this is a special regulation continuous catch & release body of water, our tournament is a paper tournament, where we measure the length of the fish, have our partners verify the length and then convert to pounds back at the landing. My partner John Haynes and I were able to get out prefishing, so we have a pretty good idea of where we wanted to start and fish during the tournament. The first area we started was a small pocket not very far off the main river. Two other boats also started in and around this cut, John managed to catch 2 largemouth pretty quickly on a 3/8oz Sunfish Tru-Tungsten jig, and I launched a 12" bass over the boat on the hookset, which came off. After that, the bite slowed. We continued to fish this cut and fish behind other anglers and as the sun came up, we picked up a few fish, my first fish was a 12" smallmouth on 3/8oz PB&J Tru-...
Mississippi River Pool 2 Redemption - Club Tournament Practice
2009-05-06 21:08:00 A complete 180 occurred this past Saturday on Pool 2. In short, John Haynes & I were each able to bag a nice limit on the very same body of water that skunked me the weekend before. I personally believe it had to do with location, we fished many of the same lures & techniques, conditions were pretty similar but the scenery had changed. We started off fishing some rocks on the mouth of a backwater, where John quickly tempted some nice smallmouth with a 3/8oz Sunfish Tru-Tungsten Jig. Those same fish, showed no interest in my Reaction Innovations Method Crank that I was trying to make work. When John caught a nice chunky largemouth on that same jig further back in a backwater pocket, I picked up my Black Neon 3" Yum Tube and quickly caught a 12" keeper. A few pitches later I swung a 19" sow into John's lap while he was re-tying his texas rig.Nice 19" Pool 2 Bass! After proving to myself that the tube would work, I switched to a green pumpkin chatte...
Flocculated in the Mississippi
2009-01-25 00:42:00 After a few pleasant days at anchor in Venezuela and an uneventful voyage upthe Caribbean, I find myself again going up my favorite river, theMississippi. There was a possibility that I might have been heading off homefrom the vessel, and it would have been great to spend a couple of days outin New Orleans. But as it turns out, I still have a few turns of the log todo out here.As we came up the South west pass, it was dusk and the banks of theMississippi were actually steaming. I kid you not. There is a wicked coldfront out in New Orleans and the whole day a moist southerly wind wastrickling up the shore. As it came in contact with the cold waters of theriver, I could see the vapors forming on the surface. The effect was great.Sadly it was quite dark to take a good picture. Going up the Mississippi inthe night is such a pity. Dawns and dusks are brilliant out in the river andhopefully I'll catch another one going out of here. A new thing I learnt on the river today is "Floc...
Great Expectations Tables For October 9
2008-10-10 02:30:00 McCain seems to have reduced Obama's a bit, and Obama's big lead in some key states seems to be declining. Last week Obama was up by about 6.5% nationally, and this week he's up by about 5.5%. McCain's attack mode paying off a bit? Overall though, there has not been much change in this chart in the past few days. Seems to be solidifying wherever they are.Colorado is back in the McCain column as Obama is now up by 3 there. Pollster.com's average has Obama up by 2.7%. But McCain can definitely still take Colorado, so Obama should not abandon the state. McCain is losing 13% of Bush voters there.New Hampshire, very close for a long time, has pulled away for McCain in a major way. He's now up by 11 points there and it looks hopeless for McCain. New Hampshire is not nearly as conservative a state as people think it is, and a lot of people from Massachusetts have been moving to the southeast part of the state recently. McCain is losing a 11% of the Bush voters in New Hampshire. That...

Leaving the Mississippi
2008-10-04 14:09:00 I'm leaving the Mississippi river today. Though I spent quite some time on this river during this voyage, thanks to some very slow loading, I do feel bad about getting out of here. In contrast to the whole of the US gulf, the Mississippi river is a beautiful place to be in. And in this time of the year, the dawns and dusks are serene. The river gently flows by and all manners of crafts make their way on it with grim determination. Its immpossible to concieve that any type of music other then Jazz could have been born on the banks of this river.
Mississippi River
2008-10-02 05:03:00 The Mississippi is a fabulous river. There is absolutely no question about that. It has been a few years since I came this way, and I really relish the opportunity to sail on it again. These are the same waters over which distinguished people like Mark Twain actually piloted ships. It is common Knowledge that Mark Twain actually selected that pen name because in his days of piloting the Mississippi, two fathoms was the established safe depth of water. So seamen would mark two fathoms ( mark Twain) with their lead to establish safe navigation. In the picture above, you can see a tug pushing a few barges of coal down river. In the picture is the Cantilever bridge for New Orleans. and to the right of the picture, you can actually see a bit of the New Orleans city.Along with the Mississippi, Bhramaputra, Ganga and the Nile, I have sailed, boated, immersed myself or atleast seen almost all the major rivers in the world. The only one I have yet to go up is the Amazon. Maybe later. The eveni...
Sunset off Mississippi Delta
2008-10-01 02:22:00 The days are fully packed these days. The fact is that I am preparing th get off the ship and this means not only extra work to get things in shape for next guy, but also a lethargic attitude in getting to posting long blogs. So -; till the time I get off, I think I'll focus on smaller posts for the time being. This above picture was taken during a stunning sunset off the Mississippi Delta. Its rare to see ships of this vintage and with derricks such as these. &-nbsp;
MN Bass Federation Nation TOC - Mississippi River Day 2 - September 5, 2008
2008-09-11 12:33:00 Well, my partner for Day 2 was Paul Perovich and he was able to utilize a Skeeter iClass 20 footer with a 250VMAX, so we had the means to run the lake and that was the plan. Paul had weighed 2 fish the day before, so he said we could fish my fish. We had some intense fog on day 2 and did not get to take off until about 10:20am opposed to out 7:15am scheduled take off.We were in the 3rd flight and boat #45 on day 2. It took less then 20 minutes to make the same run today, as we averaged about 71.5mph in the Skeeter opposed to the 57mph in my Aries the morning prior. I started in the same area as day 1 and was able to get a similar start, as I boated a 16" largemouth on a Black Yum Tube. I also caught a short smallmouth. We went to area #2, I caught several short smallmouth on a fork craw and Paul was able to boat a keeper largemouth on a junebug swimjig.I went to area #3 where I had caught and released the one 15" smallmouth on day 1. MN Bass Federation Nation TOC - Mississippi River Day 1 - September 4, 2008
2008-09-11 12:33:00 Per the usual the pairings meeting occurred the night before day 1 of the tournament. We had a nice meeting, dinner and raffle to raise some money for the local food shelf of Wabasha. I even won two spools of 17lb Vicious Fluorocarbon, which is a line I use all the time! My day 1 partner was a young guy named Josh from the host club, Zumbro Valley Bassmasters out of Rochester. This was his first state tournament and we were boat #31 in the 2nd flight. The weather forecast looked very good wind wise to fish Lake Pepin both days, so I was pretty excited about that. When our boat number was let out, we turned the bow north and ran up the river and lake to the tune of a 25 minute run up Lake Pepin. We got to my first area all, no other boats. I caught a 16" largemouth on a 3/8ozFall Craw Tru-Tungsten jig with a green pumpkin Rage Tail Chunk and my partner got a 15" largemouth on a 7" power worm. I also caught two short fish as well.On ...
Mississippi River MNBF TOC Practice Aug 30-Sept 1, 2008
2008-09-11 12:33:00 It would take too long to break down every day of practice in to a separate entry. So I will bundle all the practice into one entry and then each tournament day will get their own entry.Day 1:I left my house in Lakeville at 5:30am and met fellow club member John Fairbanks in Lake City. I figured I would start my practice on Lake Pepin since it was on the way to Wabasha and it would save a little time & gas. We spent the early part of the day checking spots that I have had success on last September during the Weekend Series tournaments. The water was quite a bit lower and the current way slower then last fall, so I was anxious to see how that affected the fish. The first stop resulted in each of catching a nice largemouth and we pulled on a couple more bites. The next stop produced just one keeper smallmouth bite, not so great. The next smallmouth area produced a 15", 18" & 20" smallmouth, time to leave there. The next area...

Fair Skin in Mississippi
2008-07-25 15:08:00 The girls and I all have very fair skin. I have had a lot of sunburns in my life and try very hard not to burn my kids skin. We love to be outdoors and especially we love to swim. Yesterday, we forgot one of the cardinal rules of swimming and Lily and I both got sun burns. This is Lily's first sunburn. I have been doing a good job of keeping her skin safe. Everyday before swim lessons I apply her waterproof sunscreen 30 minutes before she gets in the water. I use SPF 15. When Mandy was a baby the Pediatrician recommended that we always use SPF 15. He said that using a higher number doesn't really offer that much more protection from the sun but does put a lot more chemicals into her blood stream. I only use sunscreen when we are going to be in the direct sun for more than 15 minutes between the hours of 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. Adult jokes-'Mississippi Blonde'
2008-06-06 09:02:00 Two bored casino dealers are waiting at the crap table. A very attractive blonde woman from Mississippi arrived and bet twenty thousand dollars ($20,000)on a single roll of the dice. She said, 'I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I play topless.'With that, she stripped to the waist; rolled the dice and yelled, 'Come on, Southern Girl needs new clothes!'As the dice bounced and came to a stop, she jumped up-and- down and squealed'YES! YES! I WON! I WON!'She hugged each of the dealers...and then picked up her winnings, and her clothes and quickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumfounded. Finally, one of them asked,'What did she roll?'The other answered, 'I don't know... I thought you were watching.'Moral of the story:(1) Not all Southerners are stupid.(2) Not all blondes are dumb.(3) But all men... are men

Many are urging drivers to car pool when possible, make one trip to post office-grocery store-etc., trade that gas guzzler if possible. Many are trying to trade their deisel's, big trucks, SUV's, and gas guzzling vehicles. But, are finding that nobody wants these vehicles right now and that has driven the price very low. The demand is down and so are the trade in values. You may find you owe way more than a dealer is willing to give you for the vehicle. In this case you have to figure is it worth trading or are you sp...
