2009-12-10 14:05:00
The mobile space is buzzing with activity as more tie ups, innovations and new launches come to the fore. SBI’s mini savings account is expected to be available via mobile through its tie up with Eko. They plan to roll out the project across Mumbai and Punjab within two months. The pilot project was first launched at Uttam Nagar in Delhi in February and thereafter it was taken to four districts of Bihar. Mobile seems to be the saviour of rural areas be it banking, farming or even fishing. And we don’t even have the entire rural population in India using mobile just yet. I guess more is to follow. Sms Could Be the Driver Of Data & Mobile Internet Growth! Unbelievable?
2009-12-07 06:55:00
Its funny how two businesses which may look like competitors to you and me in a growing industry might actually be complementary businesses in the long run. What Im talking about are the businesses of SMS and Data on the mobile front. Lots of people believe that once data i.e. GPRS, 3G etc is ubiquitous then SMS would be dead. Now when this question was posed to Abhijit Saxena who is the CEO of Netcore at the IAMAI Digital Summit he had an interesting answer. He said “We are looking forward to the growth and usage of GPRS and the introduction of 3G this is because then we can add a link in a message which can make the experience of a consumer even better on the phone!” He went on the give an example on how during a cricket match when Sehwag gets out prior to making a triple ton a link could be sent along with the match score update to actually view the video how he got out. This would make the sms itself more valuable as well. Our Take Well come to think of it Sms could...

New DoT Directive Plans To Prefix An Additional 9 To Mobile Numbers
2009-12-04 05:08:00
If the Department of Telecommunications has its way, you could be spending the New Year’s day editing the contacts in your phonebook rather than actually calling your friends to wish them. A new DoT proposal plans to introduce an additional ‘9′ prefix to the existing ten digits of mobile numbers. The reason behind the introduction is said to be two-fold. Until recently, all mobile numbers in the country had a uniform format starting with the digit 9. However, in recent times that has changed partly because of the paucity of sufficient codes. Moving the mobile phone numbering system to eleven digits by prefixing an additional ‘9′ will not only bring back the uniformity, but also ensure sufficient capacity to cater to the massively growing wireless subscribers population in the country. While the intention behind the move cannot be questioned, the immediacy of the same has taken even mobile operators by surprise. Times Of India reports that many mobile n...

2009-11-19 11:42:00
The news of discontinuing services from Yahoo’s fold is no surprise as the company gears up to cut its cost and drive all its energy in its core segment i.e. Portal. This time Yahoo has decided to pull the plug from ‘Yahoo Go’ its mobile application. Yahoo has notified its users that ‘Yahoo Go’ will be discontinued from Jan,2010. Mobile Social Networking – It’s Not a Fad!
2009-11-18 05:32:00
Taking the benefit of hind-sight, a survey was published 18 months back which clearly stated that Netizens would use the mobile to not just alert friends or family, but more. And this activity, which was unclear and termed more at that time is slowly becoming clear and has become one of the basic drivers for telecom growth in our country. I have no hesitations in admitting now that Mobile Based Social Networking is not a Fad. And, to know a fact, Mr. Jean Laurent Poitou, MD for Accenture’s Electronics & High-Tech Industry Group seconded my thought when he said, “The next wave of technology will be driven by connected devices. Mobile connectivity has reached people the fastest of all technologies and the wave of mobile internet will be driven by social networking.” If you are a close follower of what’s going on in the web arena nowadays, you would have come across many such reports in the recent past which have audaciously reported that ‘Mobile Soci...

T-Mobile flubs sweet marketing effort on subway service
2009-11-18 01:32:00
On my way home tonight, I was handed a small bag of M&Ms by a nice young lady outside the Grand/State subway station. The bag said:Now arriving on the "L" Service available on thered and blue linesThe treat's on usThat's it. Seems rather cryptic. Except, since I'm the CTA Tattler, I know right away T-Mobile was trying to hype the new availability of phone and data service in the subway tunnels. Except it didn't say "subway" or "tunnel" anywhere on the little bag. Now, that's just bad marketing. So I've taken the liberty of editing the copy for T-Mobile. And hey T-Mobile, you don't even have to give me credit....

Finally! Wordpress has launched two mobile themes that will be automatically rendered when someone accesses the Wordpress blogs with a “compatible mobile phone“. These themes will be independent of the themes rendered on web browsers. It will only depend on the type of mobile phone used. According to the Official Wordpress blog, mobile devices account for over 60 million page views per month on Wordpress.com blogs. The main reason for the launch of these mobile themes is said to be the inability of the older phones to render the widget and theme heavy blogs on their browsers using ancient technology. For the advanced phones (iPhone and Android) having latest browsers, they have launched the modified version of WPtouch theme. For all other phones they have launched the advanced version of their stripped down WordPress Mobile Edition theme. Both these themes do not have a huge difference between the design and quality. The main focus is on displaying the main content as...

Airtel Follows Tata Docomo – Launches Mobile Comics Service
2009-10-20 06:08:00
We reported on how Tata Docomo is bringing Manga comics to Indian mobiles. Now it seems Airtel plans to follow suit with the launch of its comics service on via Airtel live. This service would be GPRS enabled and will provide access to more than 300 Indian and international comic characters — from Popeye to the local Nagaraj. The pricing is also very competitive as customers will be charged Rs.10 per week for 10 comic strips (when compared to Tata docomo’s 20 rupees for one comic), which is inclusive of data charges. This move comes right after Airtel’s alliance with twitter to provide Tweetsms.
