India’s Mobile Internet Usage Surpasses Even USA: Google
2012-05-03 08:20:00
A recent survey from Google tends to highlight that Indians accessing Internet from their smartphones outnumber their US counterparts. “Mainstream Indians are technology curious” says Google’s Country Head for Products, Lalitesh Katragadda. Mobile technology is bringing the same revolution that once telephony did. More so as  Internet takes a shift from wired to wireless, “hundreds of millions of Indians will go online on their mobile devices” he adds. Source: micgadget.com The survey revealed that 56% of Indian smartphone users accessed Internet multiple times in a day as compared to 53% in the US. The tiny difference in percentage is accentuated by the fact that there are 245 million smartphone users in the USA & not even half of that are in India! What has driven this usage? 75% of the users regularly visit Social Networking sites (54% in the USA), while 81% of Indians check their email. In comparison only 73% of the US residents do so. Indians have always been...

Special Feature: Google India is betting big on Mobile Internet. Here&rsquo
2012-04-16 09:45:00
Mobile Internet is growing heavily in India due to the proliferation of smartphones and Internet enabled feature phones. You can say that most of the web access, people have in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities is via their phones. The Medium of Usage for accessing the Internet has undergone a sudden change over the last few years. We have almost 850 million mobile subscribers in India but we still do put much faith in mobile as a potential avenue for advertisers to reach out to their audiences as opposed to the normal web. Rajan Anandan, MD of Google India spoke recently at the IAMAI’s 8th Marketing Conclave, 2012, where he shared some key insights regarding Mobile users and the ecosystem with the attendees. Here are some of the points he focused upon. 1. Smartphone Growth: This particular thing has puzzled quite a few Industry analysts. Global shipments of smartphones were supposed to overtake the PCs in 2015 but they already passed that milestone in 2011! Twenty one million sma...

Airtel Ushers In New Era Of Mobile Internet With 4G Technology
2012-04-11 10:04:00
With successful launch of 4th Generation or 4G technology in Kolkata, Bharti Airtel has become the first company to do so in India. Market leader Bharti has chosen Kolkata to launch its 4G technology, perhaps to test the efficacy in comparatively smaller region before moving on to larger metros like Mumbai & Delhi. The company had paid Rs. 33.14 Billion (US$ 646 Million) way back in 2010. The Government had accordingly allowed Airtel to offer wireless broadband in Karnataka, Punjab, Maharashtra and Kolkata. Many companies are already contemplating the launch of their own 4G Services. We had earlier reported about the upcoming launch, but apparently Airtel could not meet its self-set deadline. The 4G Mobile Broadband wireless technology is 5 times faster than any prevalent 3G technology. Though 4G is fairly common in developed nations, in some areas it is also referred to as LTE. However, there are some minor differences in application protocols. The current 3G Technolo...

2011-12-30 07:23:00
More than 300 Million or almost 40% of Facebook’s users are accessing the site using Mobile Apps. If the data from a recent report of Benedict Evans prepared for Enders Analysis is anything to go by, users of largest Social Networking site Facebook are increasingly accessing the portal through Apps on various mobile platforms. This trend is primarily being attributed to increasing use of iOS & Android apps. Earlier in September, Facebook had confirmed the number of monthly active mobile users to be 350 Million, thereby making Facebook one of the most mobile-optimized online service. However, this number includes mobile web users as well as users of its mobile apps. Mobile Web users are those who access Facebook through browsers on their mobiles. In this case, a mobile-optimized version of Facebook is displayed or accessible. Breaking down the numbers,  Evans reports that over 100 Million from the iOS & Android community, from the total of 225 Million, have installed the ...

Search & Social Networking The Top Two Uses Of Mobile Internet, Reports
2011-12-21 14:16:00
India is the fastest growing market for mobile devices and poised to become the largest market. Internet penetration is also increasing rapidly and the number of people accessing internet on their phones is at an all time high. Smartphone prices are dropping and that promises to make mobile internet more lucrative in the days to come. We have earlier spoken a lot about mobile advertising and how a data usage on phone is fast outstripping the traditional usages, like calling and SMS. Now we will look at what ‘we the people’ actually do when we are connected to the internet through our phones. Opera Software, the company behind the popular Opera Mini mobile web browser, conducts an annual survey to determine the most visited and popular websites which people visit from the mobile web browser. As was expected search and social networking were two top verticals. User-generated content is another vertical which gained a lot of momentum in 2011. Wikipedia, Spaces and Blogger (the blo...

2011-11-29 15:18:00
A while ago Google quoted that Indian mobile internet is a golden hen as more and more cheap smartphones became common and accessing internet on them was not a big thing. Few days ago,  Google India said that Information technology sector (India) could be lead by e- commerce & internet on mobile phones. Trends such as mobile internet, social networking, e-commerce and internet video as being one of the most important trends for any technology company to take advantage of. These trends were identified by Google India MD Rajan Anandan @ the 13th annual Confluence at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A). As more smartphones and tablets are being shipped in India than desktops and laptops. Mobile phones are estimated as the future. Interestingly, about 40% of search queries for Google India comes from mobile phones as against US (14 per cent), UK (6 per cent) and Russia (11 per cent). India’s Mobile Internet Is A Golden Hen, Says Google
2011-11-04 09:21:00
A while ago we had done two articles; one on the dizzying speeds at which internet, especially on the move, is growing & second, the growing demand for Mobiles. Looks like Google read both! Hence the search-giant has predicted that Internet usage in India will grow manifold as more and more cheap smartphones become common. India’s present population of 870 Million Mobile subscribers, of which only 10 million use a smart-phone capable of mobile Internet. According to International Data Corporation, Smartphone sales accounted for a little over 5% of total Indian mobile handset sold in the 2nd Quarter, but the segment grew 68% from last year. Anandam, who heads Google’s India operation reveals that “to see India become a 100-150 million smartphone market, we’ve got to have USD 100 smartphones”. And Google’s very own Android OS based phones, have achieved just that with a ridiculously low starting price-point of INR 4300 (Andro A60 from Micromax), while the price ra...

Are Indian Youth Behind Their World Counterparts In Mobile Internet Use?
2011-01-17 06:45:00
Quite contrary to the revelation by Tata Consultancy Services that Internet is the favorite pastime, the global market research company Nielson finds that majority of the youth in India are not tech-savvy and they lag behind their counterparts in other countries when it comes to mobile internet use. In its new research on mobile phones usage among the youth, the company found out that less than 10% of them used their mobile phones or smartphones to access the internet in December last as against their Chinese counterparts, which constituted about 73% in the same month. The Independent, UK reported of Nielson saying, “Usage patterns vary greatly among youth throughout the world, demonstrating how culture, economy and age can all play a large part in mobile behavior. These factors affect device selection, payment and usage.” It also added, “Indian males aged 15-24 are twice as likely as their female counterparts to use text messaging and four times more likely to use picture mes...

Mobile, Internet Help Increase Electronic Payments In India – RBI Rep
2010-08-26 09:52:00
Mobile technology, coupled with increasing internet penetration, either through computers or mobile phones, has helped increase the percentage of electronic payments as compared to paper payments as per a recent report by the Reserve Bank Of India. Though in terms of volume Electronic payments still lag their paper counterparts with electronic payments only accounting for 35.3% in 2009-10, the country has definitely seen a rise in that percentage from 27.1% in 2007-08. Volume Value From the above charts, we can clearly see a gradual increase in the volume of electronic payments on a yearly basis for the last three years. Though the volume is still low compared to paper transactions, the value of electronic transactions has gone up to 88.3%. In the 3rd Financial Inclusion & Digital Payment Conference held earlier this month in Mumbai, speakers stressed on the fact that mobiles were an important device in making the transaction from a cash to a cashless society. Mobile Internet Users Double In India: Qwerty Blackberry Clone Effect?
2010-08-16 07:37:00
Mobile subscribers are increasing by tens of millions each month and that is no secret but what everyone is keeping an eye on is how much of this subscription is actually translating into mobile internet users? As per a recent JuxtConsult report India has about 11 million (1.1 crore) mobile internet users which means Indian mobile internet market has doubled since last year when it was pegged at 5 million. Compare that to the total internet access via PCs which is still pegged at around 51 million. Now the reason that I feel for this growth has been because of the rise of the Qwerty blackberry clones be it Micromax, Lava or the recently introduced MVL G81. All these phones come bundled with facebook, twitter and internet enabled browsers as well. As per the India Mobile Report 2010 check the active mobile market share in India: As you can see from above – Low end phones like Micromax, Maxx and chinese phones have made some inroads into the market. This seems to be the reaso...

260 Million Indian Mobile Internet Users By 2015? Dream Or Reality?
2010-03-29 11:15:00
Mobile penetration in India is above 500 million and thats not a new story. Its been oft repeated that in India a large mass would access the internet via mobiles but still the serious active mobile internet population was recently pegged at just 2 million! So while all this might look murky the future according to a latest report by mobileSquared looks very bright. As per this report mobile internet users in Asia are likely to boom big time by 2015. So much so that the total mobile internet users in India is likely to cross 260 million! (thats half of the current mobile penetration!). The report states that the uptake of 3G would be responsible for this meteoric rise for mobile internet users in India. So India may have 260 million mobile internet users but it would be trailing China with millions of users as China alone will contribute 58% of all mobile Internet users across Asia by 2015, with over 800 million users. Why these statistics seem lofty? Mobile internet in my book nee...

The next 4 years is set to be the golden period for Internet growth the world over and as expected th access to internet via mobile is set to be the driving force for the growth. As of this year there are 450 million mobile Internet users worldwide but this number is expected to touch 1 billion by the  end of 2013 according to a report by IDC. Sms Could Be the Driver Of Data & Mobile Internet Growth! Unbelievable?
2009-12-07 06:55:00
Its funny how two businesses which may look like competitors to you and me in a growing industry might actually be complementary businesses in the long run. What Im talking about are the businesses of SMS and Data on the mobile front. Lots of people believe that once data i.e. GPRS, 3G etc is ubiquitous then SMS would be dead. Now when this question was posed to Abhijit Saxena who is the CEO of Netcore at the IAMAI Digital Summit he had an interesting answer. He said “We are looking forward to the growth and usage of GPRS and the introduction of 3G this is because then we can add a link in a message which can make the experience of a consumer even better on the phone!” He went on the give an example on how during a cricket match when Sehwag gets out prior to making a triple ton a link could be sent along with the match score update to actually view the video how he got out. This would make the sms itself more valuable as well. Our Take Well come to think of it Sms could...

72% Mobile Internet Users Engage With Ads. Do These Stats Convey The True P
2009-09-14 14:30:00
Can advertisers expect a better engagement level with their target audience on the mobile phones than the wired internet? Possibly so, if a recent study by InMobi, a mobile advertising network is anything to go by. According to this new report, nearly three-fourth of the mobile internet users in India positively engage with the brands that advertise on the mobile phones! But be forewarned, this report is nowhere close to a scientific study. The advertising network surveyed 205 students from Mumbai IIT School of Management. 57% of the respondents had accessed Internet from their mobile phones. Of this 57%,  72.5% agreed to have engaged with the ads in some way or the other. 10% of them had called the advertiser for more info while 17.5% had gone ahead and made a purchase. I cannot digest these numbers for the simple reason that neither are they a diverse sample set nor is the sample set large enough. But it is worth discussing if engagement levels on the mobile phones are in fact b...

Mobile Internet Ad Spend To Boost By 2014 – Majorly From India &
2009-08-26 11:21:00
The way the mobile story in India (and in the rest of the emerging world) is panning out makes for a good case study on how great businesses happen over a period of time, and people of the present generation are lucky to witness the same. The first step in any business is to offer value to users without looking for returns. This is exactly what the network operators provided all through this decade when mobile phones first started taking common place. The biggest names are those that have taken the most subscribers. The revenue per user was poor, but that did not matter as the operators went on customer acquisition by offering ridiculously low prices (Indian call charges are among the lowest in the world) and sometimes even freebies like free SMS and free call to specific phone numbers. We are well en route to the next stage in business – that of making real money. Earlier, WATblog had reported that the mobile VAS is predicted to skyrocket to reach over Rs.16500 crore by 2010....

The imminent rise of 3G technology in the UK over the last few years has been a sudden burst of fresh energy, but has also generated quite a flurry of activity! The rapid rise in 3G followers is nevertheless intriguing, and... Please Click the Title for the Full Story

This compares to an overall (worldwide) figure of 28% ('06) up from 25% in late 2004 and interestingly the access in Germany or France is not much higher at 18%. Main growth came from the sector of 35-54 year old males.
