Rural Tech – Irrigation Systems Controlled By Mobile Phones
2011-06-09 06:23:00 The best part about technology isn’t how it makes the already hassle free urban life easier but how it impacts the rural sector. Technological advancements have been very slow in trickling down to the rural population. There are a lot of problems in rural areas which if solved through technology, would make lives in villages much easier. Agriculture has been the principle occupation in Indian villages from ancient times. Since there haven’t been a lot of advancements in the agricultural sector, a simple task like switching off the irrigation systems also has a lot of danger associated with it. In many villages, night is only the time when uninterrupted power supple is available. So when a farmer has to either switch on or switch off the irrigation system at this time, he has to walk all the way to the fields and at times encounter snakes as well. M.P. Rajkumar, a 45 year old engineer from Tamil Nadu chose to tackle this problem and automate the whole process of switc...

CATRA: Cataract Maps with Snap-on Eyepiece for Mobile Phones
2011-04-11 04:12:00 Can we create a device that makes people aware of their early cataract condition? Using a light-field display, the researchers' method projects time-dependent patterns onto the fovea. Interactive software measures the visibility and point spread function across subapertures of the crystallin lens. By repeating this procedure for several light-paths, the cataracts size, position, density, and scattering profile are estimated.Created by the MIT Media Lab, Camera Culture's research group with Vitor Pamplona, Erick Passos, Jan Zizka, Manuel M. Oliveira, Everett Lawson, Esteban Clua and Ramesh Raskar, CATRA utilizes a forward scattering technique, which allows the user to respond to what they visually experience.Their device scans the lens section by section. The user sees their projected patterns and presses a few buttons to map the light attenuation in each section of the eye. This information is collected by the device creating an attenuation map of the entire lens. This allows in...

RockeTalk beats Facebook, Twitter and Orkut on Mobile Phones
2010-10-27 07:39:00 Mobile Analytics company Informate has released a report on Indian mobile usage and Mobile social networking. What they found, may come as a surprise to many. I may have killed the suspense with the title of this post. Nevertheless, the numbers are interesting. Using data over a period of six months, the study finds that RockeTalk is the most used mobile social networking application. Orkut comes in at a respectable second. Followed by Qeep, Facebook and Twitter. Airtel reported recently that almost 80% of data usage happens in non metros. If this pattern of usage is similar on other networks, the findings are not too surprising given that the popularity of Facebook and Twitter is mainly restricted to Metros as of now. But yes, It certainly did surprise me! That the application is designed specifically for mobile usage perhaps explains its popularity. With over 350 million page views per month, 3.2 million Indian users and over 100,000 communities the network draws its main tract...

2010-08-17 09:20:00 Mobile Revolution – the more we talk about, it the less it seems. From talks of mobiles leading digital revolution in India, to the increase in mobile social networking, to mobile internet users increasing exponentially each month, we have spoken about it all. Considering almost everything that could have been done via mobiles has been done and written about, is there scope for more? Of course there is. And University of Washington (UW) emphasizes that point with MobileASL, a mobile tool that they are testing that uses motion detection to identify American Sign Language and transmit those images over U.S. networks. The intention behind conducting such a study is that many-a-times the tone or message send via text are misinterpreted and as a result the next few texts are spent in explaining the initial message. To avoid such confusion, the University started testing MobileASL with a group of 11 students to examine how deaf or hearing-impaired people in the U.S. use mobile vide...
