Chris Chelios to Montreal? Rumor #1
2009-11-08 15:10:00
We all have been waiting for the rumors to start on what will ultimately happen with Chris Chelios and the Chicago Wolves. This one seems more credible than most, that Chris Chelois may be brushing up on his French and looking toward Montreal. What do we KNOW: -Chelios has signed a 25 game contract with the Wolves that can be renewed for a total of 50 games this season. -Chelios has made no secret of his intentions of returning to the NHL. -As a player he has been playing hard and fast and looks in great shape. Let the speculation begin! http://translate.google.com/tra-nslate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.corus-sports.com%2Fhockey%2Fnouvelles-%2Fchris-chelios-et-bob-gainey--se-sont-parles-1819491.html&-;sl=fr&tl=en&hl=en&-ie=UTF-8...

Visited the Home of GSP on My Trip to Montreal
2009-09-09 03:17:00
I went to Montreal for the first time this past weekend.  The purpose of the trip was to explore a new city, take in culture, look at art, sit at wonderful restaurants and of course see how the Canadians train up close.  I had the pleasure of visiting Adrenline Performance , owned by Jonathan Chaimberg who trains most of the Jackson MMA Team out of New Mexico, not to mention all of Canada's best in the fighting sports: George St. Pierre, Denis Kang, Jerome Le Banner, Shane Carwin, David Loiseau, Nate Marquart.Jonathan was nice enough to let me watch one of the fighter training sessions.  At the moment I arrived,  Jerome Le Banner, the K1 Champion ( 74-14-1 / MMA...

Lolla '09 review: Of Montreal
2009-08-08 06:03:00
7 p.m. Vitamin Water stage"Kevin you're a f***ng genius," screamed one of the many fanboys and girls (but mostly boys) during the colorful theatrics of this Anthens, Georgia-based act. Frontman Kevin Barnes (and his flamboyant alter ego Georgie Fruit) lead the soggy-yet-willing crowd through a funked out, psychedelic disco trip, complete with stage priests and demons, glitter, flying feathers and inflatable rafts. The music was pretty good too. Aside from a weak Barnes duet session with singer Jannelle Monae, including a David Bowie cover that could have been cool but fell flat, the band was spot on, ending the set in dancefloor favories "Heimdalsgate Like a Promethian Curse" and "She's a Rejecter". (Oh, and despite his penchant for nudity, Barnes...

Arguably the breakout band of Athens, Georgia’s “Elephant 6″ collective, Of Montreal is essentially Floridian songwriter Kevin Barnes plus an assorted collection of backing artists. Mining the melodic, mildly psychedelic vein of the White Album-era Beatles, Barnes composes striking short-form tone poems that, despite some rather downcast lyrics, manage to be catchy, upbeat, and utterly ...

Schneider Traded To Montreal
2009-02-16 23:10:00
The Montreal Canadiens traded for Mathieu Schneider today. What impact will he have if any with the Habs? TSN is reporting that the trade consists of Schneider and a conditional draft pick to Montreal, to the Atalanta Thrashers goes a 2nd round pick this year and a 3rd round pick in 2010. This trade is a mystery. Yes it will help the power-play as Shneider does have a cannon from the blue-line, and he may provide some comfort on the back end, but, Schneider is an unrestricted free agent also at the end of the year. This trade is a little baffling as forward Alex Tanguay is slated to come back next week, which will mean cap trouble for the Habs. Is there something else in the works? Time will tell. For now at least the Habs only gave draft picks for Schneider, which means that technically he makes the team better as there isn’t a comparision to be made with the player that left for him. Schneider will help on the power-play and will help a little on the back end, but how much ...
Go Habs Go
2009-01-22 17:49:00
Before leaving for this year?s hockey road trip, I contacted the folks at the All Habs blog to learn more about Montreal and the Canadiens. To thank them for their suggestions, I agreed to write about my experiences and give my perspective of the Habs and the Bell Centre as someone visiting the arena for the first time. I?ll start by writing this: the Bell Centre has the greatest hockey atmosphere I have ever seen in person. It starts when you first walk into the arena. Almost everyone wears a Canadiens jersey or T-shirt. When you enter the seating area, you are amazed by the dozens of banners commemorating the Stanley Cup titles and retired players. This has to be intimating or perhaps inspiring for the Habs? opponents. At the very least, it is significantly more impressive than the WBNA Attendance Leader banners hanging from the Verizon Center in Washington. The introduction prior to the game is terrific. About 15 minutes before the opening face-off, the scoreboard shows ...
The Return
2009-01-21 16:26:00
Hi there. I?m back from my week-long hockey road trip which took me to games in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto with stops in Rochester and Buffalo to see friends. While I was away, I heard that there was some type of celebration in DC and a sporting event in Pittsburgh. I was without television or internet throughout much of the trip, so I?m not sure if these are just rumors by a Canadian conspiracy group.Anyway, I?ll write a lot more about this year's hockey road trip and the Steelers going to the Super Bowl over the next few days. In the meantime, here are some questions that I hope you can answer (let?s call this trivia Wednesday):1. What is the status of Hines Ward?2. Did anyone go to the inauguration? If so, how was it? (You are not allowed to say that it was cold. The temperature yesterday afternoon in DC was at least 30 degrees warmer than Montreal.)3. How was the Bloggeration Ball?4. Did you know that Jock Callander is on the Stanley Cup?5. What can I do with $3.50 in ...

Greetings From Montreal
2009-01-16 23:48:00
Bonjour! I am live from north of the United States border where it is freaking freezing. I don't believe that the temperature got above 0 either Thursday or Friday and the low last night was supposed to be about -15. My legs got numb after only walking outside for about 7 minutes yesterday. When I return to the DC area, I don't want to hear anyone complain about how cold it is.Anyway, I attended the Canadiens game last night and am having a nice time touring around Montreal today. I went to an art museum that had a very cool Andy Warhol exhibit. Yes, I could go to the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, but I had to come all the way up to Canada to see some of his works. Off to Ottawa tomorrow, where I hope to be Prime Minister for the day. I promise not to do anything that will get me on the world news or cause an international incident. Then on Sunday, I'm looking forward to going to Rochester and Buffalo for the warmer temperature. Read that line again as I am being completely seriou...

Monday Morning Thoughts
2009-01-12 15:25:00
While I must mention yesterday's Steelers game, I also have some thoughts on other topics below. After seeing every road team win during this playoff weekend, the Steelers looked really good Sunday afternoon in comparison. Willie Parker had his best game of the season running for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 181 yards and a touchdown, but more importantly, had no interceptions or fumbles and was only sacked once. Santonio Holmes had a huge punt return for a touchdown, and the Steelers defense did a great job shutting down Darren Sproles who was held to 15 yards rushing and 91 yards receiving, 62 of which came on a late touchdown when the game was out of reach.Next up is the Baltimore Ravens: Round 3. Remember how Baltimore Ravens fans complained after Santonio Holmes? catch was ruled a touchdown on December 14? Well, they?re still bitter. Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun wrote the following after Saturday's Ravens win, "These Ravens won with...
Canadian Road Trip
2009-01-09 15:39:00
Let?s say that you are taking a road trip to Canada with stops in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Where would you go in each of these cities? The reason for this post is because I am taking a road trip to Canada with stops in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. What a coincidence! I attended a wedding in Montreal almost 10 years ago, but don?t remember much about the city besides taking a river cruise and visiting the William Shatner Center at McGill University. I?ve never been to Ottawa, and figure that since I?m there, maybe I can be Prime Minister for the day. Toronto is one of my favorite places, and I plan on visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame on this trip since I?ve never been there before. I?m heading to these cities as part of my third annual hockey road trip and will be attending NHL games in each place. Besides the hockey games, I?m looking for suggestions of things to do. Therefore, please feel free to add any suggestions about things to do and see in the comments section be...
Montreal Canadiens on a win streak.
2008-12-05 15:32:00
The New York Rangers were at the Bell centre yesterday and faced a solid Montreal Canadiens team. All in all, it was one of the best showing of the season for the Habs in this 6-2 victory. The team coached by Guy Carbonneau notched a third win in a row and despite a troubled month of November, the team is holding it's ground along the top teams of the Eastern conference.Yesterday, goals scored by Andrei Kostitsyn, Alex Tanguay, Maxim Lapierre and Robert Lang sent the Rangers packing early. The Rangers at one point were down 4-0 into the second period and never really got a chance. Even Georges Laraque contributed offensively (with two assists). The Canadiens were wearing a vintage jersey yesterday. The logo of the team during that portion in time was quite different to the one we usually see. As we can see on this picture, the white ''H'' in the middle of the logo becoming a red ''A''.The New Jersey Devils without their star netminder Martin Brodeur will try to stop the strea...

Montreal get a point despite Halak's play.
2008-11-08 05:06:00
The Montreal Canadiens can say that they at least sent their game with the Columbus Blue Jackets to overtime. Sergei Kostitsyn caught a great feed from his brother Andrei with 32 seconds left in the third period to tie the matchup at 3 all.Canadiens' goaltender, Jaroslav Halak, had a very difficult night. He gave way too many rebounds and looked handcuffed on every shot coming towards him. Halak gave a goal early to R.J. Umberger who is still red hot against the Canadiens. Alex Tanguay tied the game up at 1 when he pounced on a loose puck standing at the goal mouth.Later on into the game, a quick two goal strike from the Jackets almost resulted in a win during regulation. Marc Methot and Frederik Modin pushed Columbus ahead by a goal before the Kostitsyn brothers connected to allow Montreal to fly away with one point. The shootout session was short and sweet, the first two Jackets to go at Jaroslav Halak scored. Derek Brassard ended the game when he undressed the young goaltender wi...

Montreal and Buffalo opens their season in a total boredom.
2008-10-11 03:56:00
The Montreal Canadiens opened their 2008-2009 season tonight at the HSBC centre in Buffalo. After waiting for months since the last hockey game played in June, hockey is finally back.Tonight's match between the Habs and the Sabres lacked rhythm all evening long. There was a few moments here and there but in general, the excitement of the new season wasn't there.I really pity those who bought season tickets for this 2008-2009 Buffalo Sabres season. The team will be a total bore this year and we had a very good sample of it tonight. On the other hand, there was one good news for the Buffalo Sabres tonight: they managed to drag down the Montreal Canadiens to their level of play. The scoring for tonight is very easy to elaborate. First, the newest member of the Canadiens, Robert Lang, opened the score during the first period with the first goal of the season for Montreal. Lang recuperated a loose puck in front of goaltender Ryan Miller and sent it over the goalie.Tomas Vanek tied the g...

Montreal loses the Formula One Grand Prix.
2008-10-09 16:59:00
As we were remembering and celebrating the first Formula One victory of Gilles Villeneuve thirty years ago this week, a bombshell hitted the organization led by Normand Legault.Bernie Ecclestone unveiled a version of the 2009 calendar this week and the Canadian Grand Prix is not on the list. The 2009 calendar was supposed to contain a total of 19 races but is now only showing 18. The Canadian Grand Prix is nowhere to be found on the list.In reaction to this fact yesterday, Normand Legault, the only remaining private Formula One race promoter, announced that he and his company (Grand Prix du Canada) are retiring themselves and will not negotiate for any future Formula One Grand Prix to be held in Montreal. The amount of money asked by Bernie Ecclestone to run again in Montreal is too much for Legault and his company. In a word, the Canadian Grand Prix is officially dead. The only way that another Formula One race could be held on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit is through a negotiation ...

The Montreal Impact strikes again.
2008-10-02 16:05:00
For their third group phase match of the CONCACAF Champions League yesterday, the Montreal Impact were visiting the CD Olympia in Honduras. After a quick goal from the head of Roberto Brown during the second minute of the match, the local team started to pick up the pace. A well played free kick allowed the CD Olympia to tie up the score at 1.Then late into the second half, a penalty was awarded to Montreal at the 79th minute. Roberto Brown converted this glorious chance and gave Montreal a 2-1 lead. A lead that the team did not waste. With this victory, the Montreal Impact improoves their record to 2-0-1 (+3) and occupy the first place of Group C. The FC Atlante can tie up Montreal's record with a win over Joe Public FC.The next group phase match for Montreal will take place on October 8th in Trinidad & Tobago.(Picture: Roberto Brown, Canadian Press.)

Montreal holds FC Atlante in check.
2008-09-25 15:12:00
The second match of the group phase of the CONCACAF Champions League for the Montreal Impact was presented at the Saputo stadium yesterday. The FC Atlante from Mexico were the visitors. The weather was surprizingly warm for this time of the year and the stadium was almost to it's capacity as 12 187 fans were gathered for this match. After a slow start, the Montreal Impact took control of the match and had a few glorious chances to score. FC Atlante's goaltender, Federico Villar, kept his team in the game on a few occasions with spectacular saves to keep the game scoreless. When the final whistle blew, the score was still tied at 0-0 and both teams gathered a point in the standings. Both teams are tied in first place of Group C and both teams have a record of a win and a tie after two games. The next match for the Montreal Impact in this Champions League will take place Honduras as the CD Olimpio will host the Montreal squad.(Picture: The Montreal Impact.)

Montreal defeats Joe Public FC 2-0.
2008-09-18 20:06:00
The group phase of the CONCACAF Champions League begun for the Montreal Impact yesterday with a 2-0 victory over Joe Public FC from Trinidad & Tobago.Stefano Pesoli opened the score early into the first quarter on a well played corner while the timely saves of goaltender Matt Jordan kept his team ahead. Tony Donatelli doubled the score at the second minute of the second half. The Saputo Stadium was almost half empty for this important match in the history of the club. The breeze kept some people at home as summer is now over in Canada. Some players from Trinidad & Tobago suffered the discomfort of playing with a mercury below the 10 degrees celsius mark.Montreal, now at 1-0 (+2) in his group, will host FC Atlante from Mexico on September 24th.(Picture: Stefano Pesoli, Canadian Press.)

First international match for the Montreal Impact.
2008-08-29 15:16:00
The Montreal Impact has qualified themselves to represent Canada at the very first CONCACAF champions league tournament a month ago and were playing their first preliminary round match this week.Their first opponent, the Real Esteli FC from Nicaragua, was at the Saputo stadium in the first of two legs to advance to the next round. Nobody in Canada knew what to expect from this club as they play in an unknown league in Nicaragua.Even if Montreal dominated the game, the result was a 1-0 victory on a goal by Joey Gjertsen at the 42nd minute. Gjertsen struck a missed clearing by a defensemen in the left corner of the goal. The second leg between the two teams will be played on September 2nd in the Honduras because Nicaragua doesn't have a stadium good enough for the FIFA rules. The winner of the aggregate will be qualified in a group of four teams that will compete during the second part of September.(Picture: Joey Gjertsen, Canadian Press.)

Monday, August 25th, 2008: Helsingborg to Glasgow to Montreal to London

What I think:I just got back last Thursday night after a two-week trip. The main purpose of the journey was to attend a 26th-year high school reunion in Montreal, but I had been incessantly nagged by a friend to visit her in Glasgow for the past few years so, since I had to fly via London anyway (no direct flights to Montreal from Copenhagen), I thought I'd take the opportunity to make a detour up to Glasgow, as I had never been, and was pretty much passing by, and boy-oh-boy this was a long sentence (*stops for breath*).My girlfriend and I got on the ferry from Helsingborg to Helsingör (that's Elsinore, home of Hamlet's castle, for all you Shakespeare buffs) with our backpacks, went up to the sun deck, sat down and started eating the sandwiches we'd bought. So far so good. Then there was this bloody wasp buzzing around. I waited for it to land on the table and swatted it with a napkin. Got him. Or did I? Nope. Marisa Miller hosted a party with Puff Daddy in Montreal this past weekend and I didn’t go because I wasn’t invited, tickets were $250 dollars and if you wanted a place to sit down, it was $5000 because Puff Daddy isn’t rich enough and feels that he should charge outrageous prices so the everyday 9 to 5 millionaire can pretend they partied with him, giving them stories to tell their friends and family about how they spent 1000 dollars to be under the same roof as the motherfucker while listening to the same tunes as the motherfucker as club slut girls shook their asses for them in hopes of getting free drinks.

Historically, the Canadian Grand Prix is the theatre of exceptional performances and has a lot of surprises in store. Today's edition was no different. The 30th Canadian Grand Prix was the occasion for the BMW-Sauber to shine. Not only Robert Kubica finished in first place for the first time in his career but Nick Heidfeld who was starting from the eight spot finished in second place. 2008-06-08 01:09:00
Today at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit of Ile Notre-Dame, the qualifying session of the Canadian Grand Prix was presented. The vast majority of the pilots were deceived by the track conditions as the asphalt was peeling off the track at three different locations. Lewis Hamilton did manage to work with the poor track conditions to qualify his McLaren-Mercedes on pole position.
