Movie Review: Invictus
2009-12-12 20:22:00 Starring: Morgan Freeman, Matt DamonDirector: Clint EastwoodRelease Date: December 11, 2009Running Time: 87 mins.MPAA Rating: PG-13 - for brief strong languageDistributor: Warner Bros. Pictures - - - A South African newspaper’s heading read “he won the election, now can he lead a country?” This unhopeful question is referring to Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman), who in 1994 was elected the first black President of an apartheid stricken South Africa. After emerging 27 years from prison for political upheaval, Mr. Mandela had no inclinations to seek revenge on the white Afrikaners who placed the cuffs on him. Instead he disarms any such thought, and the film, entitled Invictus after an 1875 poem by British writer William Earnest Henley, is attracted to the passive stance which had, at its focal point, the sport of ruby. Rugby is a primitive sport that glorifies brutality. A character in the film refers to it as a hooligans’ game. A bunch of ferocious men never hesitate to jolt...
Movie Review: Brothers
2009-12-10 01:00:00 Starring: Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie PortmanDirector: Jim SheridanRelease Date: December 4, 2009Running Time: 110 mins.MPAA Rating: R - for language and some disturbing violent contentDistributor: Lionsgate- - - Jim Sheridan's latest film Brothers is neither a failure, nor a triumph. In fact, it's difficult to define what, exactly, it is. At times it's an interesting examination of the way war affects everyone both directly and peripherally. At other times, Brothers seem to think it's supposed to be a frightening psychological thriller. I suppose it really it is both, but is uneven on both counts. Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) have a modest, but idyllic life with their two daughters. He was the high school football player, she the cheerleader, they were high school sweethearts. Sam's brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the bright, but unmotivated fuck up who, at the beginning of the film, is just being release...
Rod Blagojevich: The Movie - one year later....
2009-12-09 20:58:00 A year ago today, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich received a knock on his door. No friends or family, it was the FBI, waiting to arrest him on corruption charges. Over the next 365 days, the Governor would appear on nearly every television talk show, his wife would strand herself in the middle of a Costa Rican rain forest on a reality program, and Rod would write a book and even perform at Second City. But the Governor also holds a place in my heart, because one year ago, "metromix on CLTV" wrote a blog entry speculating who would play the Governor in a movie based on his life. I took it one step further and made a trailer for the film,...
"Mike North: The Movie" to be on "Monsters in the Morning&qu
2009-12-08 01:39:00 My first suggestion to play Mike North - William Petersen. However, a co-worker recently brought up Joe Pesci, and others leaned toward Tom Sizemore. What do you think?About a week ago, I posted an entry about a possible Mike North movie in development, speculating who would play all of the characters in the North legacy. Read it here.Today the blog received a comment from Jen Patterson, saying that Mike may be discussing the post on tomorrow's (Tuesday) show. Monsters in the Morning airs from 6-9 a.m. on Comcast Sports Net. That's all the info I have right now....but I'll be watching!...
Movie Review: Fantastic Mr. Fox
2009-12-04 06:26:00 Starring: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill MurrayDirector: Wes AndersonRelease Date: November 25, 2009Running Time: 87 mins.MPAA Rating: R - for some violence, disturbing images and languageDistributor: 20th Century Fox- - -My relationship with the movies of Wes Anderson can best be described as strained, to say the least. I have a sympathetic ear for the dysfunction he makes his characters wallow in each movie, but aren’t they all really just singing the same song; that a family, no matter how damaged and quirky, can get through anything as long as they stick together? He has a definitive style but more and more I get the impression that he is really telling a variation of the same story and trying to hide it by out-weirding the last one. Considering it to be my loudest objection to his movies, I find it curious that one of the biggest compliments I can give Fantastic Mr. Fox is that it feels like a Wes Anderson movie. The children’s novel by Roald ...

Without having a sense of hope, no matter how delusional or faith oriented it may be, we become savages. The Road, based on the 2006 novel by Cormac McCarthy, follows the dreams of two anguished souls, a father and son, as they fight for their survival in a post-apocalyptic America. It is a bleak and systematic tale that produces poignant activity long after the film is over. The picture painted before us by director John Hillcoat, with a script by Joe Penhall, initiates a curious thought amongst us viewers of what has just passed before our eyes and to acknowledge how ambiguous it all truly is. Roland Emmerich did another epic end-of-the-world flick, starring semi-respectable actors, and boasting a huge budget! Doesn't this schtick get old Mr. Emmerich? 2012 features a paper thin plot about crazy solar flares in the few years leading up to the year 2012 that somehow turn the neutrinos in the Earth's core into microwaves that slowly, but steadily start heating up the planet. This results in earthquakes, tsunamis, sink-holes and other natural disasters. Coming soon: Mike North - the MOVIE?
2009-12-02 05:22:00 In Tuesday's Chicago Sun-Times, entertainment columnist Bill Zwecker had a quick blurb that caught my attention...MOVIE SCHMOOZE: Not surprisingly, the one-and-only Mike North is excited he will be ''shadowed'' Dec. 9 and 10 by Max Allan Collins -- author of Road to Perdition. Collins is being brought to Chicago by producer Carl Amari (''Madison'') as part of a plan for the author to script a film screenplay ''loosely'' based on North's eclectic life experiences.Mike North....THE MOVIE? My personal choice for the title..."Giardiniera on the Shoes: The Great Tasting Life of Mike North." While the script for this sure Oscar nominee enters the development stage, I thought it would be fun to get way ahead of ourselves and cast it. My...
Speaking of Babies - Babies the Movie
2009-12-02 00:17:00 You all know by now that I cannot spend every waking minute thinking about tattoos 1) because I have other jobs to do (yes plural, bitches) 2) because sooner or later I will be running out of space on my body and money in my bank to fund my habit 3) because there is a whole other world out there and I am a pop culture enthusiast who needs to enjoy it all. This leads me to the trailer for Babies, which looks to me like a must-see doc for the ages. My womb both cries and runs away swiftly after watching the trailer....
Monday Movie Quarterback 11/30: Blinded by the Twilight
2009-11-30 22:41:00 Please block Ray Rice into the end zone. Thanks. It's official - "The Blind Side" is a hit. Without an overflow of critical hype, the feel-good story of Baltimore Raven Michael Oher has crossed the $100 million threshold in just two weekends of release. People are ready to be uplifted, to have their spirits soar, and to have Sandra Bullock's southern accent lecture us all into the promised land of serenity. As predicted, "Twilight" was the repeat champ this weekend. I cannot imagine sitting through this film twice, but many superfans did. As for what I got wrong - some silly part of me had "The Road" opening wide this weekend. It played in just 111 theaters and didn't even crack the...

2009-11-23 18:31:00 And to think that "Twilight" was the only New Moon I would see this weekend! As expected, the second installment in the vampire/high school/wildebeast saga "Twilight" cleaned up over the weekend, to the tune of $140 million. It's $72 million take on Friday was the highest grossing single day in movie history.By the power of denim, UNITE!Quick sidebar - who is the jean shorts salesmen in Forks? See this movie: 'Rebuilding Hope' Friday at Portage Theater
2009-11-20 00:29:00 Tomorrow night you can see "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" and be treated to a lot of screaming fans and a pretty boring movie. Or you could head to the Portage Theater for a screening of the documentary "Rebuilding Hope," which has an awfully earnest name but certainly earns the right to be emotional. The 8 p.m. screening's $10 and features a post-film discussion with director Jen Marlowe and the film's stars, including Chicago resident Garang Mayuol. See my review below and let us know what you think of the movie."Rebuilding Hope"***1/2 (out of five)This documentary, about three "Lost Boys" returning to Sudan after fleeing 20 years ago, is a bit slow and often academic to the point of feeling...

SYTYCF entry: "Vampires: The Movie Trailer" by Long Pork
2009-11-05 21:56:00 These days it seems like all anyone can talk about is vampires. "Twilight." "True Blood." "The Vampire Diaries." It's enough to make it feel like pop culture is biting into your neck and imposing its will upon you. That's part of what makes local sketch comedy group Long Pork's entry into our "So You Think You Can Funny" contest such a hoot. (Reminder: Entries are due Nov. 11.) "In a world full of people," the voiceover says ominously, "sometimes there are vampires." Naturally, the rest of the trailer features characters disagreeing about the supposed existence of vampires, until eventually there's just a series of people saying nothing but the word "vampires." And as the voiceover reminds us, "You always think you're safe,...
(Untitled) (2009): Movie review and facts about the art
2009-11-03 20:54:00 (Untitled) "When did beautiful become so fucking ugly" (Untitled) is an interesting case in that it's in many ways a poke-fun-at-weird art movie, but it's a little more insider than that, and the satire has moments where it's close enough to real life that it stings a bit. It's like somebody making fun of a friend, and it's funny at first, and then it crosses the line and you feel a little defensive. One challenge I'd like to see films like Art School Confidential and (Untitled) take on it is help people also like it, which is supposed to be the other hand of satire (technically, in satire, you...
This decade's 16 biggest WTF movie moments
2009-10-28 01:11:00 The worst kind of movies, generally, are the ones that evoke no reaction at all. Which is why it's definitely worth celebrating the moments in this decade's movies that have made you ask, well, WTF? There are lots that could have made this list, and several you may disagree with or can't believe we left off. For me, the easiest inclusions were the terrible, terrible "White Chicks," the hilariously bad "The Wicker Man" and the highly disturbing "Hostel: Part II." But all the others are pretty wild as well.Look at our picks and let us know what you think!...
Gaard duty: Peter Sarsgaard's new movie getting some buzz
2009-10-23 22:48:00 Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard in "An Education." Sony Pictures ClassicsBy Miki TurnerFor RedEye Peter Sarsgaard joked that he was too young to be appropriately sketchy as a man who romances a 16-year-old girl."I'm not an older man!" the Illinois native laughingly insisted during a recent chat with RedEye in Beverly Hills, Calif. "She's 16, I'm 37--we're practically the same age. I don't feel like somebody who is almost 40."If industry buzz is any indication, Sarsgaard plays the older man quite well in "An Education," a coming-of-age drama set in 1960s London that hit Chicago theaters Friday. Sarsgaard, who is married to actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, developed a British accent and slipped into some retro clothes as a playboy who woos...
This movie will mess you up--and other thoughts on the week's new film
2009-10-22 18:32:00 You may have heard some people saying that Lars von Trier's "Antichrist" will shake you up and leave you both stunned and eager to discuss what you just saw. Well, whoever you've been listening to is right. The film has moments that you probably won't be able to watch, and issues about men, women, tragedy and grief that can be hard to take and unpack. But the movie's also oddly beautiful and challenging and fearless, and I dare anyone to see it and not come out with a strong reaction and a lot to say.You should also come out buzzing after "An Education," both because the film is so witty and appealing and smart and because Carey Mulligan, in a role...
Bring your little movie buff to the Chicago International Children's F
2009-10-20 04:16:00 Does your kid love movies? If so, you should take advantage of the Chicago International Children's Film Festival (CICFF) that opens October 22 and runs through November 1. This event presents a unique cultural opportunity for Chicago kids. According to the website, The impetus for the Festival came from a need to introduce new, culturally diverse films for children to American children's audiences, and to recognize excellence in children's filmmaking. In addition, the Festival sought to empower children by involving them directly in the jurying process. From its inception, the Festival has had independent juries of children and adult media professionals awarding prizes in multiple categories. This is the largest and only Academy qualifying kids fest in the U.S., screening over...
Today's Column: Bonus Monster Movie Material
2009-10-16 13:07:00 Here is today's column about three of my sure-fire scares. But at the end of this post, my beloved Kyles Filers get a bonus list of movies I find frightening. Feel free to chime in with more suggestions, as we've done in the past for our Scare Dare challenge and results.I can scarcely hear myself think above the ever increasing buzz about "Paranormal Activity," the so-called "scariest" movie of the year.I definitely disagree, but I can see why the hype is taking root. It's almost Halloween, and many are in the mood to be scared. The low-budget filming is gritty a la "Blair Witch Project."The premise is frightening: a demon menacing a young, cute couple who look like they met during an...
Movie Review: Where The Wild Things Are
2009-10-15 09:49:00 Starring: Forest Whitaker, Catherine Keener, Steve Mouzakis, Mark Ruffalo, James Gandolfini, Paul DanoDirector: Spike JonzeRelease Date: October 16, 2009Running Time: 101 minMPAA Rating: PGDistributor: Warner Bros., Golden Village PicturesLeave it to imaginative director Spike Jonze to puncture the world of innocence created by Maurice Sednak in the classic children's short story about a boy fleeing from home to an island inhabited by a race of huge, fuzzy creatures. This alternate reality is presented in both delicate and frenzied respects, the latter which is working more distinguishable in Mr. Jonze's film adaptation. Save for a couple of magical scenes subtlety is tamed and encapsulated by the overwhelming power of Jonze's mind that twirls out of control, allowing conflictions of tone to hurl upon the live-action film and consume it for the worse. Tone isn't consistent throughout the film, a major setback for a short film (90 minutes). The connection between the first fiftee...
My new favorite movie at the 2009 Chicago Film Fest
2009-10-09 19:54:00 It's great to see a film that you want to go out and recommend to everyone, immediately, and it doesn't happen often. But that's how I feel after a press screening this morning, so that's what I'm doing about "Mary and Max," the magnificent stop-motion animated story of friendship that is incredibly funny and smart and also agonizingly sad. The voice work, particularly by Philip Seymour Hoffman as lonely, middle-aged New Yorker Max, is incredible, and Adam Elliot's script is just splendid. See it at the Chicago International Film Festival 6:15 p.m. Oct. 18 and 6 p.m. Oct. 20 ($9-$12) at AMC River East....
Could "2012" be the worst movie ever made?
2009-10-06 06:47:00 Quick advice - never, never, never, never judge a movie based on its trailer. A great marketing team can make a disaster appear irresistible. Other times, the best trailers make the worst movies. After watching tonight's "Monday Night Favresicle," I ran across the latest clip from Roland Emmerich's "2012," the upcoming disaster flick from the man who brought us "Godzilla," and "Independence Day." Big thanks to Roland and the gang for getting us to cut back on our carbon footprints with "The Day After Tomorrow." Looks like it's going to make a whale of a difference in a few years.Maybe it's the horrible Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonator.
