Is On the Waterfront the only movie. . .
2012-02-02 06:16:00
. . . where union bosses are the bad guys? Just saw Super 8. Now, to be sure, I enjoyed the flick, was a fun, very well-made popcorn movie, but once again, the villains come from the armed forces. It’s not just the military; it seems that all too often businessmen, particularly oil tycoons, are ...

Red Tails: This is why they make movies
2012-01-25 09:09:00
I did not watch the State of the Union last night.  Instead of hearing a speech by a man of little accomplishment and great acclaim, I went to see a movie about men of great accomplishment and little acclaim, Red Tails, about the Tuskegee Airmen and their valor in World War II. All I can ...

Lessons from ?The Waiting Place? of LA Traffic
2012-01-20 21:36:00
Perhaps the main reason I posted my rant yesterday on my travails of LA traffic was because they had so drained me of the creative that had nourished me previously in the day. After dashing out my Iron Lady post, I just couldn’t focus.  And that lack of focus caused me to wonder about the ...
Falling Down in Los Angeles Traffic
2012-01-20 00:57:00
Yesterday, while pumping gas, I saw a woman melt down when unable to fill her Lexus SUV with gas. I silently mocked her. Today, I sympathized with her. Maybe she had had the kind of traffic I did today and the challenge of self-serve gasoline was the straw which broke the proverbial camel’s back. Driving ...
The Iron Lady: Great acting, flawed storytelling
2012-01-20 00:28:00
Just got back from seeing an early show of The Iron Lady with a conservative friend.  Both of us agreed that the film lacked a political agenda and indeed largely put Margaret Thatcher’s conservatism in a positive light. The problem of the film was not its politics, but its storytelling.  It seemed more an exercise ...

Creating Games Based On Movies Is The Current Flavor Of The Season In Bolly
2012-01-06 09:54:00
2011 was not the first year that digital games were developed based on Bollywood movies. It has been done earlier as well, but sporadically. In the past year we saw quite a few big name films launch games (PC, mobile and console games) to further the brand and also as a marketing ploy. Salman Khan’s film Bodyguard was the biggest grosser of 2011, raking in more than Rs. 100 crores. A mobile game based on the film is also on top of the download list on Djuzz, which is a games download portal part of Buzzcity. The game had been downloaded more than 30,000 times in just over a month, by the end of December 2011. The game was developed by Jump Games, which is owned by Reliance Entertainment and it was launched on multiple platforms including Java, Android and Blackberry. The game was priced at Rs. 50. Another film which had a successful game avatar was Delhi Belly, the dark comedy starring Imran Khan. The game was released in July 2011 and more than six months after its release the g...

Best Paris movies, books and music of 2011
2011-12-26 15:26:00
By Theadora Brack in Paris— According to my movie producer pal, George, the world boils down to two basic categories: the best and the worst. Anything in between isn’t worth talking about. Mediocrity is a crime, he often quips. As you can well imagine, his dinner parties in Paris are always quite lively, dramatic and informative. So as a nod to my opinionated crony, I’ve decided to round out 2011 with a list of my favorite Paris-related music, movies and books. By George, this one is for you, Cheapos. Without further adieu, here’s my Ab Fab, crème de la crème raves. Envelope, please! Best Music Video “Someone Like You” by Adele Adele pont-ificates on Pont Alexandre III. Click to watch the video. In her column yesterday, Peggy Noonan demonstrated the qualities that have caused me to dub her the Athena of punditry:  she offers a particular feminine insight into recent cultural moments, a woman’s wisdom. Just read her reflection on the death of Steve Jobs and wonder. Although she is slightly critical of the soon-to-be-released movie about ...

LA Times coos over Occupy version of Christmas Carol
2011-12-19 00:54:00
To see just one reason why fewer and fewer right-of-center Angelenos subscribe to the Los Angeles Times, take a gander at this front page puff piece on a left-wing playwright’s revisioning of Charles Dickens’s Christmas Carol. The story is not even about a play that has been produced, but merely about a script a man has ...

2011-11-25 08:23:00
YouTube has just rolled out some full-length Disney movies from the archives. These movies are available for a nominal rent. How do the two upcoming 'Snow White' movies compare?
2011-11-16 15:30:00
Once again Hollywood has run out of ideas and will release two different versions of the classic fairy-tale Snow White in 2012.  While Mirror Mirror was directed by Tarsem Singh, Huntsman was directed by deviantART. Mirror stars Julia Roberts with a dodgy accent while Huntsman stars Charlize Theron with a dodgy accent. Notice any themes here? Mirror is apparently a sort of action-comedy while Huntsman is, who... The Chicago Park District presents Movies in the Parks

I've written about my love for the (mostly) fabulous Park District programming in the past. During the summer months, The CPD offers Chicago families everything from summer camps to sports programs and local watering holes. But I think that my favorite summer offering is the Movies in the Parks Program. I just like everything about this idea. Grab a picnic blanket, some snacks and drinks and head out to your local park to enjoy a movie under the stars with other neighborhood families. What's not to like about this great family experience?
