Museum Spotlight: National Museum of Mexican Art
2009-06-22 21:16:00 If my profile of Nicole Gallery started the series, "Bright Colors and Uplifting Art from Countries in Conflict", then our next installment will be the Nation Mexican Museum in Pilsen. The above sentence sounds flip, but I'm fascinated by cheerful art that comes from artists who grew up in a countries mired in conflict, and contrast that against the depressing work of artists who were raised in a place of privilege. I recently read the biography of a artist who described the violence, grit and angst in her work as stemming from feeling socially alienated as an adolescent. Really? That's the best she's got? Anyway, currently on display is Miradas: Mexican Art from the Bank of American Collection, and Muralla: Sobre Lienzo,...

Hungarian National Museum
2008-03-25 19:30:00 Reportedly dating back over 200 years, the Hungarian National Museum has a grand history and a grand facade to match. The neo-classical building, designed by Mihály Pollack and built between 1837 and 1847, is a sight to behold itself, with a huge central portico and eight Corinthian columns supporting an ornamental frieze. But with seven permanent displays focusing on the history of the country from its foundation until the modern day, visitors will not want to linger outside for long.Exhibitions focus on Hungary's geography and ethnography, divided into five major sections - archaeology, middle ages, new era, numismatics and historic paintings. As one of the regions richest museums, it is also home to the Hungarian Holy Crown and coronation jewels, as well as an archaelogical library housing over 100,000 volumes.Covering over 8000 sq metres, this is the largest museum in Hungary. The building itself is a site of historical significance, as the place where the patriotic poet San...

National Museum of Decorative Arts Buenos Aires
2007-12-03 19:20:00 The National Museum of Decorative Arts is the most beautiful museum in Buenos Aires. The building itself is worth the visit. Before being donated to the National Government along with all its works of art, this was the private residence of a very wealthy Argentinean family, the Errázuriz-Alvear. The building was designed by French architect Rene Sergent, the same architect who built the Trianon Palace Hotel in Versailles and the private residence of Count Nissim de Camondo, in Paris. All the materials, like wood panelings, mirrors, moldings, were brought from Europe. The rooms in the main floor were decorated in different French styles from the XVII and XVIII century, except for the Grand Hall, inspired in the large rooms typical of XVI century England in the time of the Tudor dynasty. In the apartments of the first floor we can also see the taste for French decoration in Louis XV, Louis XVI, Directory and Imperium style. The only exception is the Art Decó room decorated by Catalon...

2007-12-02 16:51:00 For the next few days, the Philippines will host heritage experts from the International Committee of Vernacular Architecture (CIAV) of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). To open the ICOMOS-CIAV Scientific Conference 2007, the ICOMOS National Committee Philippines hosted a gathering at the National Museum. The local heritage community came in full force. Me and my tokayo Ivan ManDy had our photos taken with HCS President Gemma Cruz-Araneta (Miss International 1964) and Margie Moran (Miss Universe 1973) among many others. Of course, we took the opportunity to request for a rare private viewing of guess what? Yes, we got the very rare chance to take our photos with Juan Luna's Spoliarium and other Luna and Hidalgo paintings under the strict guidance of a conservator. The Spoliarium won the gold medal in the Exposicion General de Bellas Artes in Madrid in 1884. Another major painting on display is the Assassination of Governor Bustamante, a major and controversi...

Atari 2600 enters Strong National Museum of Play’s Hall of Fame
2007-11-12 15:34:00 Filed under: Gaming We know that the Atari 2600 doesn't really need more accolades, but it's always nice to see the system get propers from the man upstairs. In this particular case, the man upstairs happens to be the Strong National Museum of Play's Toy Hall of Fame (that's a mouthful). To date, the museum has only added 38 toys to its list, so Atari's old pixel pusher joins the ranks of luminaries such as G.I. Joe, Barbie, the Slinky, Hula Hoops, and the Kite. In addition to being the newest entry, the console also has the distinction of being the most recently invented toy in the Hall of Fame, though we understand that claim was nearly edged out by Silly Putty. Congratulations, 2600, you've come a long way.[Via Next Generation] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Songkhla National Museum
2007-08-20 08:31:00 The museum building itself is a protected national monument. Over 100 years old, unique because of its Chinese architecture, it houses a valuable collection representing various aspects of the cultural heritage of the South and of Thailand as a whole. History of the Songkhla Nationl Museum. The typically Chiness style building of the present day Songkhla National Museum was built in 1878 at the command of Phraya Sundranuraksa (Mr. Net Na Songkhla), Deputy Governor of Songkhla at that time. After being a house of his family for 16 years, the building then was used as the residence of Phraya Yommaraj (Mr. Pan Sukum), state governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat in 1894 - 1896, the state hall in 1896 - 1897, and the city hall of Songkhla Province in 1917 - 1953, respectively. Afterwards it was neglected for 20 years. On the 6th of July 1973 it was registered as a National Monument. From 1974 it was successively restored by the Fine Arts Department to house cultural material, and has served a...

National Museum
2007-08-20 07:18:00 In the former grounds of the 18th Century Wang Na Palace, The National Museum houses the largest collection of Thai art and artifacts in the country, and is definitely worth a visit, especially if visiting nearby Wat Phra Keow or the Grand Palace. Opened by King Rama V to exhibit the antiques and gifts bestowed to him by his father, it once held a reputation for being an ill-organized gathering of dusty relics. That has now changed, with exhibits now arranged into three areas consistent with Thai history and good English-language descriptions available. The front of the Sivamokhaphiman Hall is a Thai history gallery spanning the Sukothai through to the Rattanakosin periods. The Archaeological and Art History collection showcases items from Thailand's prehistory to Sukhotahai and Ayutthaya eras right through to the modern Thai Kingdom, including many ancient sculptures. Among scores of interesting collections in the decorative arts and ethnological collection are Chinese weapons, go...

This exhibition marks the first anniversary of the museum's existence and also marks the 120 years of diplomatic relations between South Korea and France. The National Museum of Korea is the largest museum in Asia. It is one of the sixth largest museums in the world. Within its first four days of opening, 116,000 visitors had visited the museum. Thalang National Museum
2006-10-24 06:43:00 The Thalang National Museum is another place we have meant to visit for a long time, having driven past many times. It's located near the Heroine's Monument, just off the main airport road, south of Thalang town in central Phuket. Now, it's not a huge museum, but the entry is only 30 Baht (and what's more they do not have a different price for foreigners), so I reckon it's worth a look. The first thing we saw outside was a pile of wreckage recovered from the tsunami, and there's a whole room full of stuff pulled from the sea in a room inside. When you see it all piled up - bags, phones, signs, cups, TV's..it does rather hit home.Outisde there is also a kind of tsunami memorial - a sculpture (already falling apart) showing a spirit leaving a body. (See photo below)Inside you start with general Thai history, there are some old artifacts, a history of the people of Thailand - good background information. Then you move onto Phuket history with sections about the different people -...
