Why Nepal?
2010-03-29 17:50:00 This past weekend, in search of a birthday gift for my father, I browsed the amazing collection of antiques, artifacts and furniture from around the world at Primitive's annual warehouse sale (www.beprimitive.com). I chatted with the owner, Glen Joffe, about his truly unbelievable gallery, the fact that I had to get my father, who has an impressive collection of Pre-Colombian art, down to his gallery and that I was adopting a child from Nepal. He asked "Why Nepal?" I quickly told him that Nepal is one of a few countries that allows singles to adopt, and programs like China (which people automatically think of) have up to a 7 year wait. The reality is Nepal came to...

Experiencing old-world Nepal
2008-11-21 03:47:00 ... at Dwarika Hotel.Okay, I didn't actually stay there but I did dine there on one occasion with my colleagues. After a 30-min ride from Hotel Yak and Yeti, where we were staying, we were dropped off in the street amidst the hustle-bustle of the evening rush hour. It felt odd that we were standing out there in the biting cold of the night and in front of a nondescript doorway. We reluctantly stepped in, not knowing whether we were in the right place at all. Once inside, we were all surprised at what we saw! It felt like I was in a different world. Dwarika is a beautiful product of a restoration effort spanning 25-30 years. Built of brick and having ornate architectural bits and pieces added (hand-carved windows, door frames, pillars, etc.), all of which were obtained when old traditional buildings were torn down long ago. Additional wood carvings on the windows, the ceramic sculptures, as well as the pottery were all made in a workshop inside the premises. The result is a gorgeous...
Maoists Are Ruling Nepal
2008-11-02 09:59:00 The news has been pretty confusing for a long time coming out of Nepal. The Nepalese Maoists laid down their guns and gave up armed struggle for a variety of reasons, after a brutal civil war in which 13,000 people were killed, 10,000 of them by the security forces. The Maoists decided to try to seek power by peaceful means. They seem to have won about 1/3 of the vote in the nation's first real democratic elections. They got into power, apparently in a coalition with some other parties. They are now part of a ruling coalition in Nepal. One of the first things this new government did was to get rid of the Nepalese monarchy. The next agenda was to call for a Constituent Assembly, apparently in order to rewrite the Constitution. This was their program toward the end of the war - an end to monarchy, a constituent assembly, a true multiparty democracy with the right to dissent.I've been reading quite a few interview with these guys, especially with their leader, Prachandra. He has taken ...

Photo Hunt #28 and 29: Wrinkled/Beauty
2008-08-30 05:28:00 I am re-posting the image below, same one I used in last week's PH. For some reason, I couldn't leave my comment and link at the PH home. Anyways, I used the photo again because I think last week and this week's theme can be found in the said photo. Her face may be marred by age and years of hard work , yet, I find her beautiful. Who says being wrinkled and old can't be beautiful? The picture above portrays both.
Fuel Lines Kilometers Long in Nepal
2008-08-25 03:41:00 Imagine if this happens in Amerika: How to get hold of petrol is one of the hottest topics in Nepal ever since its sole supplier, India, began refusing to sell fuel on credit a year ago to Nepal’s state-run fuel monopoly, which owes it millions of dollars. Litratong Pinoy #009 : Mithi (Wish)
Iyan...
