WiFi Networks In India Are Weak. Could Fall Prey To Attack Warns CERT-In
2012-01-19 09:15:00
The Computer Emergency Response Team for India (CERT-In) has issued  a warning saying, “WiFi Networks in India are weak in defense against brute-force attacks by hackers”. Computer analyst at CERT-In have zeroed-in on possible attacks via WPS or WiFi Protected Setup mechanism. WPS is routinely used in Indian homes to securely & easily setup wireless networking within homes & small offices. However, “WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) contains a design error that could allow a weaker-than-expected defense against brute-force attacks, which could allow an attacker to gain unauthorized access to the affected system,” warned CERT-In. CERT-In is a national agency that keeps a tab on computer security incidents & works directly under the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. How does the Attack take place? An unauthenticated, remote attacker within range of the Wireless Point i.e. your router, can use the PIN to gain unauthorized access to the dev...

Airtel Networks Down In Mumbai As Data Centre Catches Fire
2011-12-27 13:46:00
The service provider with the largest number of subscribers in India, Airtel,  is facing major disruptions in the commercial capital of India, Mumbai. Various reports saying that networks have been down since early Tuesday morning. People are unable to send and receive calls and SMS. Further, both GPRS and 3G services are unavailable. The cause of the disruption is a fire having taken place at an Airtel Data Center in Malad. Airtel, really needs to learn about fire-proofing. This is not the first case of their networks being down due to a fire. In 2008, a fire at their Lower Parel offices caused network disruptions. In 2010, their networks were majorly disrupted in Bangalore. As usual, everyone came to know about the network disruption through Twitter. Consumers started complaining about network disruptions along with the area they were located in. Airtel’s Official Twitter handle @Airtel_Presence was tagged in the tweets. Airtel officially responded through Twitter by sayi...

Social networks a total Spy Grid (video) and US Mercury/Pluto
2011-12-09 13:35:00
Sometimes it's difficult to ignore America's natal Mercury/Pluto opposition in modern times when you consider the great technological strides made toward total surveillance by way of Smartphones and social networking sites such as FaceBook, Twitter, and Google+.That iPhone or Blackberry you depend on is your willing acquiescence to having everything you do, choose, read, hear, purchase, travel to, or think fully known by Big Brother who keeps tabs in order to predict your--and thus, 'his'--next move. Blogs and websites are regular targets, of course, especially ones infested with Politics--and dissent that disagrees with the globalist Washington consensus! If our lack of privacy and governmental high-handedness sound 1984-ish a la George Orwell, there's a good reason--they are. Here's Alex Jones recently interviewed on these draconian topics and tactics:~:~Mercury opposite Pluto is an aspect replete with deep anxieties! It makes people (and government) feel that all is in a stat...

Social Networks Has arrived in India
2011-10-25 13:18:00
I was surprised today to find out that the recently elected Chennai Mayor has a facebook profile(https://www.facebook.co-m/saidaiduraisamy) and updates it regularly. But the real surprise was that he also has a Google Plus Profile - https://plus.google.com/-101033117702722643248 You will know that social networks are in the advanced technology cycle when a TN politician started- using the social network. Google Buys Zave Networks In An Acquisition Spree
2011-09-06 11:23:00
It seems Google is in an acquisition hangover as it takes over Zave Networks (platform for digital coupons and incentives). Lately, Google also bought Motorola. Zave Network’s is the 19th buy for Google this 2011 and shows how cash rich they are. This spree will continue as companies are more than willing to join the Googlesphere. The official website for Zave Networks exclaims, “We are delighted to share that Zave Networks has been acquired by Google. When we had the opportunity to join Google, we felt it was the perfect fit for our company and the perfect opportunity to rapidly drive the deployment and use of our platform to the next level”. Google has been trying its hands on discount and coupons domain lately. In 2010 Google tried to acquire Groupon at $6 billion dollars, but Groupon had declined the offer outright. So Google started its own Google Offers. This deal with Zave is another shot to hit the e-commerce space. Google spokesperson says, “We’re thrilled to we...

3G Is Passe As 4G Networks Are On Their Way
2011-08-22 09:46:00
While India may just be warming up to 3G Networks and services, the Telecom Regulation Authority is already getting ready for 4th Generation Mobile Telephony, or 4G.  Some operators in the country had already been carrying out trials of 4G services, with little headway. However things have sped up after the TRAI recently released a consultation paper to help bring in the next generation of Mobile Networks. Operators can submit written comments and suggestions to the consultation paper for another month, up till September 20th. They also have up till September 27th to submit counter-comments. In the paper, the TRAI said, “As third generation (3G) systems are being deployed in India, many operators in developed countries are focusing on deploying further advanced system networks called IMT-Advanced to cater to the growing requirement of data, speed and content delivery.” In Feb 2010, a pre-consultation paper was issued by the TRAI seeking stakeholder comments on this s...

Facebook Dominates The World Map Of Social Networks
2010-12-10 14:50:00
Today it is indeed the age of Facebook. TechCrunch terms it as an unstoppable juggernaut with $35 billion valuations, 600 million users and 25% of all US internet traffic. An even more awe inspiring proposition here is that all of these feats have been accomplished with fewer employees than Google’s job openings. The latest edition of Italian writer, blogger and photographer Vincenzo Cosenza’s World Map Of Social Work reveals that we do live in its age. Prepared based upon the Alexa and Google Trends for this month, He points out that the social networking giant has overtaken other leading social networks in the past few months, especially in Europe. The analysis also reveals that Facebook is now market leader in as many as 115 out of 132 countries. And those following suit include the professionals’ networking site LinkedIn and micro blogging site Twitter. According to TechCrunch, Facebook did fare well when the map was started last year. The first edition in June 2009 showe...

Wireless network refers to any type of computer network that is wireless, and is commonly associated with a telecommunications network whose interconnections between nodes are implemented without the use of wires. Bye-bye 'Lone Star,' 'My Generation': Networks need to
2010-10-05 08:48:00
I'm distressed by the quick cancellation of ABC's "My Generation" and Fox's "Lone Star" after each show aired only two episodes. Sure, they were low-rated outings, but I don't think any show can attract an audience, let alone a fan base, after two episodes. Both shows were up against stiff competition. Their networks could have tested them in different time periods. In a perfect TV world--and we definitely don't have one at the moment--networks would stay loyal to their shows for at least half a season so they could find that audience. I think that may have worked for "Lone Star," which made it onto several critics' lists of the best new shows, including my own. Fox premiered the...

Social Networks Adversely Impacting Online Ad Prices : ComScore Study
2010-07-15 08:20:00
The recent ComScore study has opened a can of worms for online advertising, in general, as it details the causes for declining online ad prices. ComScore study says the increasing ad inventory of social networks is the prime reason for nearly 18 percent decline in Online Ad prices (in CPM terms) during last year . The study is not without any detail stats as it shows that just two big social networks, Facebook and MySpace, alone account for 1/5th of total US ad impressions leaving enough scope for other social networks, micro-blogs per se to uplift the gap. It also pegs CPM prices of social networks at paltry 56 cents compared to an average CPM of $ 2.43 garnered across the web. Social Networks commands just 5% of online ad revenues despite owning 20% of display advertising inventory – Adage & ComScore (Source). Social networks has witnessed a stupendous rise ever since the evolution of Facebook-Orkut days. The social phenomena has grappled the world with big social play...

Tata DoCoMo Provides Free Access to Major Social Networks On Buddynet Plan

Tata DoCoMo is indeed following on its industry breaking moves by giving away completely free access to Major social Networks like – Facebook, Twitter, Orkut & LinkedIn through its Buddynet Plan. The plan will also offer free usage of Nimbuzz chatting app on its network by Buddynet subscribers. Buddynet Plan was unveiled a month ago which allows mobile subscribers to call other buddynet users at preferably low rates of just 1 paisa/6 seconds for Local calls and 1 paisa/2 seconds for STD calls. The plan entails weekly rent of Rs.7 and seems to be banking on youth to grow its subscriber base. The pricing is pretty intelligent in a way it requires other invitees (during cheap calls) to also be a subscriber to buddynet services . The free access to Social networks and chatting will provide it enough buzz for its youth-oriented service plan as majority of youth are now glued to social networks through mobile Web. The access will however be restricted to stated social networks o...

Facebook To Tighten Privacy By Removing Regional Networks
2009-12-03 05:57:00
In an open letter by Mark Zuckerberg a new privacy announcement has been made by Facebook. Given that recently Facebook crossed yet another number centric milestone of 350 million users this is probably the most apt time to make this announcement. Facebook has announced that it would be doing away with the regional networks. This means that if you chose the ‘India’ network while joining facebook then you would have to revise your setting soon. This is being done as a measure to create a simpler model for privacy control where you can set content to be available to only your friends, friends of your friends, or everyone. Earlier as part of the India network anyone from India could source and see your profile and send you a message. The move to the simpler model will give users the ability to control who sees each individual piece of content you create or upload. So while twitter still remains very much an open network with little or no privacy settings by default. Facebo...

Should our social networks be distinct?
2009-11-12 16:38:00
Whenever I get asked about the “future of social media,” one answer I often give is about the real emergence of tools that let you update once, and then you can communicate through all of your networks. That would be a real time-saver so you don’t have to go to Facebook, to Myspace, to Twitter, to your blog, to your __________ and post or update your $0.02. A one-stop, social media aggregator. Those aggregation or integration tools are growing. Tweetdeck let’s you do the update Twitter, Facebook and Myspace, for example. And, this week, LinkedIn and Twitter announced an integration so you can post status updates on both networks. After mulling that over in my head for a day or two, I thought: One tweet doesn’t always fit all. How you use one network doesn’t mean you use another network the same way. I view LinkedIn different from Twitter different from Myspace and even a bit different from Facebook, as well as other networks I belong to. LinkedIn ...
Ning Launches Apps’ Services For Its Array Of Social Networks –
2009-09-14 13:08:00
The app fever refuses to die down and so is the buzzword in Web 2.0 scenario, even Ning. The white label social networking giant has launched apps service for its networking portal. Ning had earlier launched the App service for Admin profiles and also notified the expansion of apps one month earlier. The new app platform would allow network administrator to implement the apps on their networking sites and thus harness the true potential for their social networks. The app platform is based upon OpenSocial, supported by Google and thus could see a flurry of other apps introduced on the portal. In the beginning Ning would have only 90 apps but expect the numbers to ramp up seriously. Ning in recent times has been building up on features to fight competition from similar services like multiply. The company recently received another $15 million at a valuation of more than 750 million. The introduction of application would provide it a big boost as in recent times launching a ...

We Need Strong Blog Networks for Reasons Beyond Money
2009-08-25 20:19:00
The intellectual value that blogs and bloggers bring as info-media is immense in India. They present thought leadership not only with regards to their own niches but of blogging as a powerful medium as a whole. At a certain point of time the Indian blogosphere was the new measure of intelligentsia of the country.  However for reasons that vary from exhaustion to newer tools to a general lack of ideas blogs haven’t gone beyond the mainstream peak they seemed to have reached back in early 2000 s. The number of bloggers in India have gone up for sure, which perhaps is the reason many popular bloggers began to shift to newer media like Twitter for self expression and continue their early adopter aura. So while the numbers improved the influence to a certain extent decreased. This however is a debatable point, and anyway doesn’t hold considerable value in the actual topic of this post. What does hold a lot of value though is the stagnation that blogs are stuck in since quite...

By The Numbers, Facebook Trumps All Social Networks?
2009-06-28 16:21:00
Statistics often color our perceptions, and in the sphere of social networking this is most certainly true. We like to make assumptions based on the numbers. However, most often when 'pacing' is omitted from the equation, we lose our perspective as to what the numbers are really telling us. Is Facebook the dominant player in social networking or does its growth numbers tell us something more about where it will be a year from now?
An Open Letter to the Big Five Networks, Re: Summer TV

Dear ABC CBS, FOX, NBC and the CW, Yesterday, the NY Times Media Decoder Blog revealed that “the four major broadcast network are performing abysmally across the board in viewers between the ages of 18 and 49, posting the lowest combined ratings in that category ever for the four networks.” Translation: Audience levels for network summer fare are sinking faster than this TV Addict’s confidence in HEROES since Bryan Fuller’s surprise announcement on Monday. Which naturally begs the slightly awkward albeit painfully obvious question: If television is habitual (see: the success of CBS’ entire roster of aging procedurals) why are you spending all summer long doing your best to inexplicably break said habit courtesy of a painfully uninteresting mix of reruns (see: last night’s sked which included repeats of THE MENTALIST, HOUSE, NCIS and 48 HOURS) and reality TV (see: I’M A CELEBRITY… GET ME OUT OF HERE, THE SUPERSTARS and AMERICA’S GOT ...

With a launch date of June 9, 2009, nobody knows yet whether that description is an illusion, bravado, grand self-promotion or truly the next big shiny thing. To date there are no blogs written, no product announcements, and no press releases to alert the media. In USA Users Spend Double the Time on Social Networks Now
2009-06-05 06:18:00
Facebook leads the pack here not in only in terms of number of users active but also with regards to the number of hours spent on the site. The total number of minutes spent on Facebook surged 700 percent year-on-year to 13.9 bn in April this year from 1.7 bn. However, it is Twitter who took the cake home really, the time spent on the popular microblog rose by as much as 3700 percent compared to last year. This firmly places the reason why many think Twitter will change the way live, for it is actually gaining momentum in terms of usage, but that’s on a different tangent to this post and so we will talk about it later. These numbers were presented in a Nielsen Report that came out some while back. Some other points to note and social networks mentioned include Blogger, Tagged.com and Myspace. Together these sites formed the 5 most active social networking platforms on the web (though not really in that order).  MySpace came second with 4.71 bn minutes which is a sharp 31 perc...

Social Networks: Getting Lost In Features?
2009-05-25 08:07:00
A very interesting fact pointed out by Mr Kalyan Manyam of Indyarocks during the SiliconIndia Digital Media Conference which was moderated by Rajiv Dingra was how tones of apps on a social network actually degrade user experience by making things too complicated. I may not be a social media expert but as a consumer I can relate to this very well. The reason why many still stick to Orkut (at least in my circle) is a) they have grown up with it over the years seeing features being added one by one (including apps) b) switching to Facebook gets confusing for more than one reason and one of them being the flood of applications that one sees there. It becomes hard relating to it in the beginning. I would like to share something that I faced just last week (how apps can make things complicated). One of my Facebook friends has a very nice integration of his Flickr updates on Facebook. Inspired by him I decided to do the same. While trying to integrate my Flickr account with Facebook I sta...
