Oakland Shootout and Sideshow - a review
2009-07-30 05:50:00 More at Zennie62.com | Follow me on Twitter! | Get my widget! | Visit YouTube | Visit UShow.com On YouTube.com Yesterday I posted a blog entry which contained set of videos from the YouTube channel of "EASTOAKLAND106", and contained scenes that were shocking. One showed two young black men basically exacting an ugly form of "street" justice on a white man in East Oakland. The other videos were created during "The Sideshow", an activity featuring muscle cars revved to full-throttle by their drivers, spinning donuts in the middle of the intersection of 106th and Mac Arthur Blvd. The YouTube channel contained other videos that together gave the viewer a real picture of what was going on (or "going down") in that part of Oakland. I made the decision to create the blog to get the attention of the normally placid blog reader, tossed a steady diet of texts about celebrities, sports, and Erin Andrews. These videos showing the real life in East Oakland are there, but bloggers...
ESPN: No Oakland Raiders Bias - NFL Draft Notes
2009-04-27 16:41:00 More at Zennie62.com | Follow me on Twitter! My long-time friend Richard Lieberman is prone to hyberbole and god-love him, this is one of those moments. The San Francisco Chronicle blogger may have made some hay by charging ESPN with a "bias" against the Oakland Raiders, but where I am in New York, and where I was at Radio City Music Hall for the NFL Draft, the notion was quickly put to rest. I'm going to spend about as much time on this as ESPN did, but the bottom line is a lot of people didn't like the Raiders draft, almost from top-to-bottom. I was editing videos in the Interview Room when I overherd NFL Network's Pat Kirwan, and Clark Judge of CBS Sports doing a take for NFL Network, and both were almost laughably derisive of the Raiders decision to take Darrius Heywood-Bay, who's the third ranked receiver in the draft over Michael Crabtree who was picked in an almost regional slap-in-your-face move by the cross-bay San Francisco 49ers. The pr...
Boston Red Sox vs Oakland A's
2009-04-17 11:46:00 As luck would have it, the Red Sox were in town the two days before the awards ceremony. I had wanted to go to both games, but only managed to make it to one.Getting to the Oakland Coliseum is very convenient. The Bay Area Rapid Transit stops right in front of the stadium...and right in front of our hotel. It was only about $3 and a short 20 minute ride over.Ticket prices are also very reasonable. The most expensive seat in the house was only $55. I would have purchased one of those, but they were all sold out. I had to settle for the $40 seats, which still weren't too bad.It has been nearly four years since I've been to a Major League Baseball game (check out my post from 2005 and you'll recognize a former Saipan celebrity). The two or three games I went to at Fenway when I was a kid are some of the best memories I have from my childhood. It was great to sort of relive them at Tuesday's game. Here are some photos:Big Papi about to take a monster swing. That's team captai...

A Sad Day for Oakland
2009-03-23 19:15:00 On Saturday, 21 March 2009, Oakland saw one of the worst days in its history. Four Police officers shot, three dead, one on life support. All four officers were shot by Lovelle Mixon, 26, of Oakland, a parolee who fled after shooting the first two officers following a routine traffic stop, then shot two more ...

FOR OAKLAND: AN OPEN LETTER TO OFFICER JOHANNES MEHSERLE
2009-01-11 09:00:00 by Emily Kagan TrenchardJust a few days after, one of the wealthiest men in Germanydid it because he had lost his fortune to a con artist. There was a man in Texas who did it after Americawatched him ask a 13 year old for a blow job on television. In fact, when a naked man, crazed, standing on the roof of a buildingin Brooklyn threatened a group of police officers with a neon light bulb –the kind with the long incessant buzz and the ability to washaway your life under its glow – when this shriveled threat of a manwas tasered and fell off the roof to his death, the commanding officeron the scene did it. Oakland Raiders Stink - New England Up 42 to 20 In Rain-Soaked Game
2008-12-15 00:27:00 I've been an Oakland Raiders fan since I was little, and went to a lot of games. I've seen bad years, but this one's too much to take. For the second straight year, the Oakland Raiders are guaranteed of a high -- second pick in 2009 -- NFL Draft pick. It's not that the Raiders need the players; the Raiders need a coach and a system. Right now, they're losing 42 to 20 to the New England Patriots at the Raiders home, a windy, cold Oakland Coliseum. The main problem is the defense; good in places, the Pats no-huddle strategy got them off guard. What's the best answer? Blitz and from different angles. Make them think about what they're doing. But the Raiders didn't do that. Still, this 3 and 10 team could come back. It's 3:30 in the third quarter, and the Raiders just need to score three more touchdowns and a field goal to win. Oh, and hold the Pats to zero additional points. Let's see what happens.

Sports Business Networking? Join Women In Sports And Events
2008-09-23 01:05:00 If you're in the sports industry or in a sport management program, this video explains my experience in finding the right program to be a part of. After some good experiences and some terrible ones, I joined Women In Sports And Events (WISE). Regardless of gender, it's an excellent grassroots style program and they treat their members as welcomed guests. IF you're in a college, then you're already in a networking group, but you still can't go wrong with WISE. But there's one organization I recommend you not join and it's the National Sports Marketing Network. The National Sports Marketing Network does not have -- in my experience -- a good customer service track record. My story is personal in that I recently was sent an email to come to a member's only event, but then when i RSVPed -- after some hestiation because of the NSMN's terrible reputation in the SF Bay Area and after a friend encouraged me to do so -- I got the weird rebuff email. When I enquired and expressed...
Oakland Raiders Losing To Broncos 41 to 14; Officiating Terrible
2008-09-09 07:17:00 I'm watching this debacle of a Monday Night Football game, which finds the host Oakland Raiders getting hammered by the visiting Denver Broncos 41 to 14 at this point in the game with about a minute left. But even though the Raiders are losing, I've got to complain about how the officials just let the Broncos defensive backs plain manhandle the Raiders wide receivers -- there should have been at least three pass interference calls. Tragic. More terrible still is the overall game plan put together by head coach Lane Kiffin and his staff. They tried to rely on their running game almost exclusively in the first half and even then Kiffin does not seem to know that his prize running back Darren McFadden is an outside speed specialist and not Deuce McAllister of the Saints. It seems like it's going to be a long year for the Raiders.

Chinese Government Already Arresting Dissidents Before Olympics
2008-07-27 18:36:00 http://zennie2005.blogspot.com- - If you remember the video I made where I talked about how the Chinese Government could use IP address data from the Viacom / Google lawsuit to find dissidents and arrest or kill them -- See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1ua_XT1RJIEThen brace yourself because the Chinese have already arrested two Internet dissidents Du Daobin and Ye Guozhu and have done so before the Bejing Olympics. Both dissidents were arrested for "subversion" or writing against the actions of the Chinese Government. Such actions bring into focus the value of the "annoymous blogger" because the idea is that by being just that, one can explain and report in a dissident fashion without the kind of retribution these two gentleman are facing. But the actions of some using the term annoymous have threatened the very ability to use that term. As a momentary aside, people using that term must take care not to abuse its use for mean-sprited purposes. China is clearly concerned abou...

Deborah Edgerly v. City of Oakland | Chip Johnson's Right About Favoritism:
2008-07-01 18:54:00 I want to be the first Oakland blogger to affirm Chip Johnson's article today charging favoritism in the City of Oakland. My response is that it doesn't start or stop at the CAO's office or with Deborah Edgerly herself, and a really complete look should go back 10 years, not just 2004. Look, I was treated so terribly by the City of Oakland when I was trying to bring the Super Bowl here, that my own mother -- who's still cancer-free by the way -- observed that "Between Blacks who are jealous of you and Whites who think someone White should be doing what you're doing, you're going through a terrible place." She was right.Oakland's government has a long history of hating well-educated Black men who don't follow the normal ethnic stereotypes. I remember 1998, when all of us from Elihu Harris' office -- I was economic advisor -- were being placed in various departments of the City of Oakland after Jerry Brown won a landslide victory to become Oakland's next mayor. I wante...

Tom Gonzales - Commerce One Founder Sues East Bay Community Foundation
2008-06-22 13:04:00 (Story reposted at the request of our own Robin Belker..) Tom Gonzales, the co-founder of Commerce One, has filed a lawsuit to against East Bay Community Foundation of Oakland and to regain control of his son's charitable bequest in order to ensure that the tens of millions of dollars are spent as the younger Tom Gonzales wished. In this, the image of the East Bay Community Foundation has been damaged. The East Bay Community Foundation was originally the receiver of a bequest of $23 million from the Gonzales Foundation, and it was to be controlled by EBCF. But distribution of the money has been on hold until various tax claims involving the Gonzales estate are resolved. In a kind of fit, EBCF elected to sue the family just because EBCF has not received all of the money due to the tax matter. I guess they forgot who it belonged to. But in doing this, the reputation of the East Bay Community Foundation has been damaged because it seems like an awardee can't trust the East Bay Co...
Oakland Raiders Talking With City - City Attorney John Russo Interview
2008-06-14 00:32:00 I met with Oakland's elected City Attorney and my friend John Russo the day after election day to talk about his unopposed win for a third term, how Oakland has changed, Oakland Politics and the District Three Council race, who Senator Obama should pick as his VP, what Russo's is proudest of with the evolution of his office, and the talks between the City of Oakland and the Oakland Raiders. Russo explains that the talks are between the Raiders and the Oakland / Alameda County Joint Powers Authority and that they're going well. He also confirmed that Raiders Manager of The General Partner Al Davis is not in good health and has not attended all of the meeting. As to the possibility that the Raiders would get a new stadium, he said no, but they're in agreement on the matters of concern to the Raiders. Given what I know from trying to bring the 2005 Super Bowl to Oakland (we lost to Jacksonville), that means we should expect to see an upgraded Coliseum at some point in the future...
Giambi believes career is far from over; a return to Oakland?
2008-06-11 14:19:00 Jason Giambi is 37 now, in the final year of his New York Yankees contract. He has been through a steroids scandal and struggled through injuries and illness. Yet he arrived here as among the most productive Yankees in the lineup, with an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .945, second on the team to Alex Rodriguez. Giambi is making $21 million this season, and the Yankees hold a $22 million option on his contract for 2009, with a $5 million buyout. It seems highly unlikely he will return, especially if the Yankees pursue a younger first baseman, Mark Teixeira, on the free-agent market. Giambi's recent surge has made it clear his career is not finished. But no matter how his season had been going, Giambi said, he would have wanted to keep playing. He loves the game and lives for the lifestyle."No doubt," Giambi said. "I'd like to play until I'm 40. My body feels great, and I'm taking care of it. I'd love to play that long."Giambi's hitting style defined the A's teams of the ...

Oakland PD's Harleys have a new roar at $500 each!
2008-06-10 15:00:00 Over in Oakland they like it loud - so loud that all 45 of the Police Department's Harley-Davidson motorcycles have been equipped with shiny new tailpipes, at a cost of $500 apiece, to rev up their roar. It seems the cops just didn't feel safe on toned-down bikes. "There's an old motorcycle adage that you are heard before you are seen," said Deputy Chief Dave Kozicki, explaining the department's decision to toss the bikes' muted factory-issued mufflers in favor of the more high-volume pipes. Kozicki cited an accident three months ago in which an Oakland officer riding a toned-down cycle was struck by a motorist who said he hadn't heard the officer approaching. But some City Hall insiders, as well as motorcycle cops elsewhere, said the safety argument is a stretch. Even the folks at the national Motorcycle Industry Council, which represents all the big bike manufacturers, were unaware of any safety benefits from louder mufflers....

Super-Streaky Sox Swept Swiftly...Oakland 6 Boston 3
2008-05-26 11:14:00 The 2008 version of the Boston Red Sox has already established itself as a very streaky team. You know, win three, lose three, win five and then promptly lose five. It's getting to be frustrating! They were swept by Oakland's superior pitching Sunday afternoon as they bowed to the A's 6-3. That superior starting pitching for Oakland was plainly evident in all three games, and right now, the A's are a hot team, as they should be with that kind of rotation. Blanton bested Lester convincingly, pure and simple. Jon recently learned that his father has developed some form of cancer, what is thought to be a treatable form of the dreaded too often deadly disease. He was asked if the news of his father affected any of his mound preparations. Here's what he had to say...?It hasn?t,? Lester said when asked if his father?s condition had weighed on him. ?I?ve always been out in the open. I just haven?t told you (media). I don?t want to get questions about that. I want to get asked question...

A Duchscherer Gem For Oakland...Oakland A's 3 Boston Red Sox 0
2008-05-25 10:55:00 Justin Duchscherer joked before the game that he was going to "pull a Lester" and pitch a no hitter. And he came darn close to doing it. A Big Papi David Ortiz one out single in the seventh inning and a sixth inning hit batter ('Tek) were the only blemishes in his eight innings of stellar work. This is what Red Sox manager Terry Francona and opposing pitcher and tough-luck loser Josh Beckett had to say after the game...?He commanded every pitch he threw tonight,? Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. ?His command was phenomenal. He did not throw one pitch without a purpose. He kept us off balance. Other than David?s hit and his line drive and Youk?s line drive, we couldn?t do anything.??It was unfortunate someone had to lose it,? Beckett said. ?We don?t have many games like this, period. For what this offense does on a consistent basis, no one has a right to complain about run support.?Peter here, and I ain't complaining about ANYTHING! Josh pitched more than well enough to win mo...
Oakland Jumps Wakefield's Bones...A's 8 Red Sox 3
2008-05-24 11:48:00 For the second time in his last three starts, Tim Wakefield allowed seven runs in a game, and the Red Sox seven game winning streak is now merely a part of history. Oakland defeated Boston 8-3 and handed Timmy his third loss of the year. His record is even at 3-3, but he has only had one standout start, an eight inning beauty. It didn't take long for the A's to take command, scoring three runs in the first and four runs in the third. And with Rich Harden on the hill for the home team, there was no way to come back from such a deficit. Terry Francona had this to say..."His stuff is as good as anybody in the league," Sox manager Terry Francona said of Harden, who is 3-0. "He gets into some fastball counts and he doesn't give you a fastball. We've seen him too much. We don't need to face him every other game. I hope he's not going to come back and pitch Sunday."Peter here, and yes, Harden is THAT good, at least when he pitches against us, and NO, he will not be pitching on Sunday...
