The decade's 20 worst films to become box office hits
2009-12-09 23:35:00
In theory, only great movies should become box office hits. Or, at least, hits shouldn't be generally regarded as junk. If the movies stink, people wouldn't see them, right?Uh, not the case in the '00s. These 20 movies are only a sampling of the awful films that made a ton of money. If we ever get a sequel to "Norbit," we as a species have only ourselves to blame. What do you think of these flicks? What is the most shocking hit? Will you stand up and support any of them?...

Box office blog: 'Twilight' devours 'Dogs,' 'Assas
2009-11-30 19:37:00
Vampires. Werewolves. Teen hormones. There's just no stopping 'em.Over the highest-grossing Thanksgiving weekend of all time "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" continued its box office domination, taking in another $42.5 million to bring its domestic total to $231 million. Wow. Not too bad for a movie with some sulking, more sulking and then a little more sulking, with a tiny bit of obviously CGI action on top. Holding strong at No. 2 was "The Blind Side," earning $40.1 million to become Sandra Bullock's second movie this year (including "The Proposal") to reach the $100 million mark. Now if only either of those movies were funny or moving. The new, not-so-great movies released Thanksgiving didn't do a lot, thankfully. The horrible, horrible...
Bears Nation, Front Office Comfortably Numb
2009-11-24 18:48:00
So, the Bears got knocked off by Philly Sunday night. Don't you understand? They were supposed to get licked. They were three point home dogs. What does it mean for business at Soldier Field? Simple. Scalpers will still do big money on home dates with the Vikings and the Packers and the Bears will continue their endless run of sellouts through 2010 -- probably through 2020. Season ticketholders, you can expect your renewal forms sometime around the second week of March.  ...

Rate the babes in your office
2009-11-18 17:00:00
Sometimes during those quiet periods in the office, it is hard to think of something constructive to do. So what about rating the ladies that work in the office, seems like a reasonable thing to be doing doesn?t it? Obviously, this is going to get some of you into trouble, but what the hell! This is ...
2012 dominates the Box Office with $225 million so far...

Twitter users rate it at 69%, while IMDb users have given the movie a weighted average vote of 6.7 / 10. Almost identical right? Rotten Tomatoes, on the other hand, shows a 39% rating, with the following concensus: Roland Emmerich's 2012 provides plenty of visual thrills, but lacks a strong enough script to support its massive scope and inflated length. - - -- - - However, the dismal ratings did not stop the movie from amassing a box office return of $65 million (domestically) and another $160 million worldwide. Total take, so far $225 million. - - -Says the Hollywood Reporter: "2012" opened roughly similar to Emmerich's personal best debut with "The Day After Tomorrow," which rung up $68.7 million over the first three days of 2004's four-day Memorial Day weekend en route to registering $186.7 million in total domestic boxoffice. The helmer's last pic -- 2008's "10,000 B.C." -- bowed with $35.9 million and grossed $94.8 million overall domestically. Opening audienc...

Box office blog: 'Christmas' wins, sends Zemeckis the wrong messa
2009-11-09 16:00:00
Dear Robert Zemeckis,Thank you again for "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?," the "Back to the Future" series and "Forrest Gump."We do not, however, congratulate you--even though you're a Chicago native--on this weekend's box office win for your junky motion-capture animated "A Christmas Carol," which earned $31.1 million. Sure, audiences frequently embrace holiday stories around the holidays (obviously) but that doesn't mean you should continue to mess up beloved stories with your creepy attempts at using new technology. Stop. Please.Yes, we know that your movie destroyed the competition, with other new releases placing third (with $13.3 million for "The Men Who Stare At Goats"), fourth ($12.5 million for "The Fourth Kind") and sixth ($7.86 million for "The Box"). But that doesn't seem...
Delusions & madness: just another day at the office
2009-11-05 03:55:00
Let me tell you how my day started. We start work at 8:30.  Around 8:45 I got a call from a patrol sergeant.  He asked if we could meet one of his officers at the hospital and assist with a possible child abuse investigation. The call had started just before 8:00 when mom, holding her 1-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son, waved down one of our civilian community service cars and began yelling for help.  She said her husband had been shot, and there was blood everywhere.  She was standing in a parking lot about a half mile from her apartment when she said this.  She was agitated, and she also said her husband had killed himself, or was suicidal.  Or had...
Box office blog: 'Paranormal' has more activity, and 'Saw VI
2009-10-26 03:37:00
Yesssssssssssssssss!!! Woooooooooooooooo!!!That's my reaction to seeing that "Saw VI," the latest hunk of junk in an idiotic franchise that should have been one movie and done, earned just $14.8 million to place second at the box office this weekend. That's way, way down from the $30 million opening by "Saw V." Good work, America! The weekend winner was "Paranormal Activity," which enjoyed its first weekend of wide release by taking in $22 million. Not bad for a movie that cost $15,000 to make and has already earned more than $60 million. Those horror movies pretty much annihilated the rest of the week's new releases. The boring "Astro Boy" placed sixth with $7 million, "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" landed at No....
Bored In Office? Some Tips To Kill (err.. Pass) Time!
2009-10-21 06:45:00
Everyone has “wow! Boss is late to work today” moments to “if i work anymore, my head will burst” moments in their office life almost on a day to day basis. The only getaway in such moments is the internet. Lets face it, you can not watch YouTube videos or read e-newspapers whole day, sometimes you need some refreshing games/websites to freshen up your mind and start working again! So here is our list of such websites - Mystery Google In short, this website is “I am feeling lucky” button redesigned! The catch is that it will take you to the first result from the search results of the person who used the site just before you! Your search results will be shown to the person who uses it just after you. This site is best for the times when you do not precisely know what you want to look for to kill time and when you are feeling a bit adventurous. Go try it out! Stumble! Another one of my geeky favorites. You can just select the areas of your interes...

Box office blog: Let the 'Wild Things' victory party start
2009-10-19 03:46:00
A cause for a wild rumpus: The extraordinary "Where the Wild Things Are" topped the weekend box office with $32.5 million. That's not a huge tally but a good start for a movie that should, hopefully have a good word of mouth, and continue to build an audience until its regarded as the classic that it is.What definitely is not a classic--or even a less-than-terrible movie--is "Law Abiding Citizen," which took second place with $21.2 million. For anyone who didn't think the movie was a gratuitously violent and totally nonsensical waste of time, well, I disagree. At No. 3 was the highly buzzed-about "Paranormal Activity," which added another $20.2 million to its total (now more than $33 million), which is...

Box office blog: People, sadly, don't retreat from 'Couples Retre
2009-10-11 23:46:00
Maybe people just wanted to flock to a movie with a lot of beautiful scenery. They couldn't have thought "Couples Retreat" looked good, could they? Or is it just a devotion to Vince Vaughn that lingers despite a recent streak of terrible movies? Well, whatever the reason, Vaughn's latest lazy comedy topped the box office over the weekend with $35.3 million, knocking last week's winner, the awesome horror-comedy "Zombieland," to second with $15 million. And people are clearly interested in getting spooked a few weeks out from Halloween: Sliding into the top 5 this weekend was buzzworthy indie horror flick "Paranormal Activity," which placed fifth with $7.1 million. What did you think of "Couples Retreat"? How excited are you for "Where the...
Preview 'The Office' wedding of Jim and Pam
2009-10-07 16:17:00
Wedded miss? "The Office" co-workers gather for the wedding of Jim and Pam. NBC photo If you haven't heard, this Thursday Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) get married on "The Office." NBC didn't send out screeners, but they've flooded the Internet with sneak peeks of the hour-long episode that begins at 8 p.m. The clips don't reveal a whole lot about the episode, but I have read that Dwight (Rainn Wilson) and Michael (Steve Carell) do an awesome "Wedding Crashers" imitation, working the single ladies at the Niagra Falls-set wedding. And I hear that Michael--miraculously--does not do the most embarrassing thing at the event....

Gunderson Ave. As much as I love being in SF, I hate missing a big sale like that! Badass Office Worker Ignores Making New Pot of Coffee
2009-09-03 14:30:00
Photo credit: Morguefile.com In my office, there's a sign above the coffee pot that says: "Drink a Cup? Make a New Pot!" This sign is in place to make sure that people who enjoy the office coffee take the time to make a new pot for those who want to enjoy a cup later -- but without the hassle of brewing a new pot. You know what I say to those people? Suck it. That's right. Because you know what I did the other day? I walked right into the break room and saw that there was exactly enough delicious coffee left in the pot for just one more cup. I took my mug, tossed in a couple of...
Obama in Office: Liberalism Warmed Over (& Heated Up)

Roger Clegg (via Glenn) offered a slightly different take on the New York Times article I considered in my previous post.  While, like me, Clegg finds the “renewed emphasis on ['disparate impact'] lawsuits . . .  disturbing but, again, not surprising,” he found the policy was nothing new:  . . . the issues raised by the ...

Wanna buy the Old Post Office?
2009-08-24 19:55:00
Photo from ricklevin.comOne of the biggest real estate auctions in Chicago history starts Thursday, when the U.S. Postal Service will try to auction off its Old Main Post Office - the hulking, empty building that sits astride Congress Parkway, and which has been vacant for more than 10 years. Chicago Real Estate Daily has the story. In the last decade a lot of plans have been floated for the 3-million-square-foot behemoth -- casinos, auto malls and water parks have been proposed -- but nothing has come to fruition. The highest and best use of the place in that time: a cameo in the Dark Knight. Bids will start at just $300,000. It'll be interesting to see who buys it and...

Fall Office Fashions: Eco-Friendly Designs By Feral Childe
2009-08-23 05:05:00
Office wear doesn't need to be boring, most companies are embracing contemporary trends that are still conservative enough for the workplace. Well, that is unless you're my former employer who believed in the man?s style blazers andpantyhose in the non-air conditioned office in summer; completely limiting by ability of introducing anything alternative into the office. Designer Feral Childe certainly doesn?t follow the same beliefs, since not only have they introduced a new line of office appropriate wear that?s verging on contemporary, it?s also eco-friendly.

Office Assistant and MsgBox Menus
2009-08-19 16:55:00
In last week?s Article: Color and Picture in Message Box we have seen a method to use Office Assistant quickly to display a Message Box with formatted text. We are not going to discuss further on the formatting part but I have a general feeling that Readers would like to know how this simple method can be used to obtain responses from Users, out of several options presented to them, and do different things based on their selection of choices. I have already covered this topic by creating Functions like MsgOK(), MsgYN(), MsgOKCL() etc., with the use of Office Assistant. These can be called with only the Message Text Value alone or Message Text and Title Values as Parameters, from anywhere within the Application like the built-in Function MsgBox(). I made an attempt to simplify the usage of Office Assistant through the above mentioned Functions and others, which otherwise needs several property values to be passed to the Office Assistant?s Balloon Object for displaying. But, in the...
