What will Olympic status do for golf in Brazil?
2011-06-23 15:56:00
August 5th 2011 marks five years to go before Rio de Janeiro hosts South America?s first Olympics and golf returns to sports? biggest stage for the first time since 1904. Tim Maitland looks at how the sport is evolving in Brazil as 2016 inches nearer. From Rio de Janeiro?s perspective, the final piece of the Olympic jigsaw was put into place in June when, during the IOC Coordination Commission?s visit, the decision to build a new course in Barra da Tijuca, rather than to refashion the nearby Itanhanga Golf Club, was made. For the Rio 2016 Organising Committee it meant that the venue master plan was complete. With the five-years-to-go point upon us, it gives golf fans a clearer picture of what golf in the Olympics will be like, with the International Golf Federation still working on the qualification premise it presented to the Olympic family when it successfully made its bid for inclusion in 2009: the top 15 men and women in the world rankings (with a limit of four p...
Golf and Brazil's International Olympic Growth Potential (part 2)
2011-06-23 15:53:00
August 5th 2011 marks five years to go before Rio de Janeiro hosts South America?s first Olympics and golf returns to sports? biggest stage for the first time since 1904. Tim Maitland looks at how the sport is evolving in Brazil as 2016 inches nearer, from building awareness in the sport to golf as an international business. Read the first segment here, What Will Olympic Status do for Golf in Brazil? Building Awareness Typically, tournament golf is one of the biggest drivers of awareness in any emerging golf market, but the days when Gary Player, Ray Floyd, Jerry Pate and Hale Irwin etched their names on the Aberto do Brasil or Brazil Open trophy in the 70s and 80s are a distant memory. And the European Tour?s Brazil Rio de Janeiro 500 Years Open and Brazil Sao Paolo 500 Years Open as part of the celebrations of Pedro Alvaras Cabral?s ?discovery? of the country in 1500 did no more than mark the anniversary and quickly disappeared. For the moment, it?s left t...
HSBC LPGA Golf Stars Issue Olympic Rallying Call
2011-05-30 17:54:00
Two of the world?s leading golfers landed in Rio for the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup with a simple message for the sport: ?Next Stop: Olympics - Let?s grab this opportunity with both hands?, Tim Maitland reports. World number two Suzann Pettersen and number four Cristie Kerr believe Rio 2016 represents a once in a lifetime chance for the sport to establish itself in a country where less than one in every eight thousand people currently play the game. Less than a week after battling it out in the final of the Sybase Match Play Championship in New Jersey, Pettersen and Kerr sat on lounge chairs sipping glasses of fruit juice on Botafogo Beach, hoping it would be the last occasion they will have time to enjoy Rio de Janeiro?s sun-kissed sand. ?We?ve got five years before we return for the Olympics in Rio and the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup is the one foundation stone our sport has to build on,? said Pettersen, in the build up to this weekend?s two-day, limited-field event at the Itanhanga Golf Cl...
Golf opportunity of Olympic proportions
2011-03-28 18:54:00
The LPGA is preparing for the most-important unofficial, small-field, two-round golf tournament anywhere in the world. The HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup is just one ingredient in the recipe that can make the sport’s return to the Olympics a success. Tim Maitland reports.   Angela Stanford at 2010 LPGA Brasil Cup   A 27-player, two-day tournament is not normally associated with the start of something big in the wide world of golf, but the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup could be the veritable small acorn from which a giant oak tree grows.   Prize money of just US $720,000 might not seem much, but the event is the closest thing to a fully-fledged global tournament in the nation that will provide the stage for golf’s re-entry into the Olympics in 2016. As America’s leading female golfer Cristie Kerr put it when she committed to making her first trip into South America, the Olympics is “the biggest single opportunity that women’s golf has...
LPGA Ambassadors on Olympic Golf Mission to Brazil
2011-03-01 19:32:00
Three top golfers on the LPGA Tour have decided to become golf ambassadors in order to gain more interest in the sport and to insure future Olympic success. Cristie Kerr, Suzann Pettersen and Meghan Francella are "on a mission" to Brazil to spread the word about the great golf the LPGA has to offer. The three ladies have committed to play in the HSBC LPGA Brazil Cup at the Itanhanga Golf Club in Rio De Janeiro on May 28/29 partly because golf will be featured in the 2016 Rio Games. The field will be made up of thirty golfers and event purse will be $720,000. Another reason for Suzann's call to action is because Pettersen was part of the official delegation that successfully presented golf?s "case" to the IOC in Copenhagen sixteen months ago. She believes the HSBC LPGA Brazil Cup has a vital role in growing the popularity of golf in South America before it returns to the Olympic family for the first time since 1904. Pettersen further said she wanted, "sports fans in Brazil t...

Elite / Professional / Olympic Athletes And Steroids Go Back A Ways
2010-08-30 14:00:00
All the current news devoted to MLB players Roger Clemens and Alex Rodriquez, Tour de France riders Floyd Landis and (alleged drug user) Lance Armstrong, and rookie NFL player Brian Cushing, would seem to indicate that steroid and performance-enhancing drug usage is a more recent phenomena. At least that is what one might think based on the media attention given to these stories, especially when comparing it to what was readily available about high profile athletes of many decades past.

For those of you not familiar with Justin Gatlin, he was the 100-meter gold medalist in the 2004 Olympics, and former World Champion, who received a four-year ban from track after testing positive for steroid use in 2006. Considered to be one of the fastest men on earth, at one time, his ban is set to expire this summer on July 24th. Time served.

Olympic Gold: A Win for Earth!
2010-03-16 14:00:00
The Vancouver Winter Olympics has ended, but it is an interesting piece of trivia to know that when the world-class athletes bagged the Gold (or Silver, or Bronze), they proudly wore more than just a symbol for victory: it was also a win for Mother Earth. According to an article on Audubon magazine, some of ...

Vancouver's U.S. Olympic athletes utilizing Twitter, Facebook
2010-02-28 06:22:00
According to short track speedskating bronze medalist Allison Baver (Sinking Spring, Pa.) there is an amped camaraderie among the athlete at this year's Olympic Games. Compared to the 2006 Games in Torino, the American athletes in Vancouver feel more at home. "When we were in Torino, there was a little bit of a disconnect. The two villages seemed further apart," Baver said. "[This year] I've seen a lot of the athletes that are competing in Whistler...we've been following each other, watching each other and supporting each other." Partly responsible for this is the cyberspace support from Twitter and Facebook. "Now with Facebook fan pages, we're fans of everybody's," Baver said.A brief web-surf confirmed that.  ...

Olympic Ice Hockey Won't Fix NHL's Overall Problem.....
2010-02-25 23:32:00
The biggest question to come out of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics is if the public will latch onto any of these sports after the games in British Columbia is over.  Millions upon millions of people have been glued to their televisions over the past two weeks where the Olympics viewership number is up by over 14% compared to the 2006 games.  Everything from downhill skiing to skeleton competition, droves of   Americans have seemed to find a new destination to go to every night for entertainment.  However when talking about the aftermath of these games, what sticks in the collective minds of the American television audience?  Since most of these events aren't broadcast on television anyway, the main sport that has...

Welcome to the jungle of Vancouver Olympic venue music
2010-02-25 05:45:00
It might get you standing. It might get you dancing. It might get you screaming. Or it mightCrowd attempts the wave at Pacific Coliseum during short-track speedskating. not. It might just keep you interested--mellow and focused. No matter what mood it provokes, the music played at Vancouver Olympic venues during breaks and timeouts, as well as during the runs of several events, comes from thought and analysis by venue staffers. Pacific Coliseum hosts the figure skating and short track speedskating events. According to the arena's venue manager, Jake Benson, the music played during breaks in the action of each sport differs. "Our sport production team selects the music played at the venue based on music trends and event demographics," Benson said....
Olympic Update: Plus Athletes Rock the Bobsled

World-class athletes are often cut from one mold - very low body fat, incredible endurance, speed, or strength, and low weight. So what's a girl to do with the realization that Plus Athletes have found a home in the Vancouver Olympics? Well, cheer, of course. USA Beats Canada....The Olympic Ratings Are In
2010-02-23 02:01:00
I won't keep this long, but last night was one of the best hockey games I've seen in a long time.  It's not just because of the "upset" in a preliminary round match up, but the energy drew me in.  A combo of USA and Canada fans matching chants for their respective teams while watching what is basically an NHL all star game that matters more than just home field. It was about national pride and not playoff positioning.  Both teams showed that this was the game both of them respectively circled on their calenders.  This was the game that mattered and there was no tomorrow (even if there is).  It was fun, but the bigger debate was who was watching...

Olympic curling: please don't let it be misunderstood
2010-02-17 07:37:00
Team USA skip John Shuster delivers a stone in the 6th end Tuesday night as teammates Jeff Issacson (left) and John Benton (right) await his directions. Photo by John KristoffNext to the biathlon, curling is probably the most obscure sport at the Winter Olympics. But after watching the US men's team take on Norway Tuesday night, albeit in a losing effort, I've decided that watching it live is pretty sweet. But before I go any further, here's how curling works in a nutshell. Each game has ten "ends," which are like innings in baseball. The goal is to have as many stones as close to the center of the circle at the end of each end. There are four players on...
Kane, Toews open Olympic play in Vancouver
2010-02-17 05:50:00
Did you miss the action on Day 1 of the Men's Olympic Hockey Tournament?  Yeah, me too.  Well, most of it anyway. As was expected, USA defeated Switzerland 3-1 in an afternoon tilt while Canada trounced Norway 8-0.  All games are played in Canada Hockey Place (known as General Motors Place during the NHL season). Apart from the fact that all are still healthy, none of the four Blackhawks players participating in today's games achieved any noteworthy accomplishments. Patrick Kane will need to be a factor for Team USA to be in medal contention, but the winger was held off the scoresheet against Jonas Hiller and the Swiss.  Kaner did lead the Americans in shots on goal with four. ...

Olympic Snowboardcross provides first glimpse of Cypress
2010-02-16 07:06:00
I'm proud to announce that Monday I became the first of our seven group members to venture beyond the roofed Olympic events of Vancouver proper and into the mountains. It was Cypress Mountain, in fact, that was site of the fast and furious Snowboardcross tournament. There I learned that the event's collection of four-man heats that brackets its way to three medalists can be wildly complicated by the slightest of margins and smallest of slip-ups.U.S. hopeful Graham Watanabe came across the finish line in his quarterfinal heat inches, perhaps centimeters, behind the second-place racer--a disappointing finish for the Pegasus-talking wordsmith that John brought to light. Then in the final, U.S. rider Seth Wescott came back big on Canadian Mike Robertson after what...
Blackhawks have many personal highs in sight after Olympic break
2010-02-15 21:00:00
Already it's been a season like none other for most Blackhawks. There are 21 games remaining in the regular season and 21 is our lucky number. We have two 21-year-olds in Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, who have us believing this will be a year for the ages, young and old and eternal. Patrick Kane has 25 goals in 61 games, same as he had last season in 80 games. He owns the club high of 67 points, three short of his 2008-09. History will be made immediately after the Olympic break and Kane will move onward and upward in writing his legend. He needs 33 points for a 100-point season, and while that's likely out of reach, Kane...
Winter Olympic Hottie of the Day: Ted Ligety

Q & A with five-time Olympic gold medalist Eric Heiden
2010-02-13 23:58:00
While Joe was lucky enough to chat with Illinois' Olympian Bonnie Blair, I had the opportunity to talk on the phone with former U.S. long track speedskater Eric Heiden, who won an unprecedented five gold medals at the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid.Heiden's success at the 1980 Games has been drawing recent attention because U.S. short track speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno has a chance to eclipse Heiden's five-medal total and top the list for most medals won by an American man at the Winter Games.I talked with Heiden about his relationship with Ohno, how athletes view medal counts and these Vancouver Games....

McDonalds and the Olympic Games
2010-02-11 03:45:00
There are a lot of good stories to tell at the Olympics and today I went on the hunt to find one of them.My start? The McDonalds located in the Main Press Center, where a handful of McDonalds employees serve the press.Yesterday when I ate there along with another volunteer these eager, young employees started singing a song about good service and high standards. They were all so cheery that a question came up: How does one become a McDonalds employee at the Olympic Games? My hunt led me to Cassandra Macrae from Revstoke, British Columbia. As she served Brooke DeStefani, who is working with me to fill media requests, I felt the need to ask this twenty-something about her employment...
Mayor Daley sued for not providing info about Olympic bid

The non-profit organization Judicial Watch is suing Mayor Daley and his office for failing to respond to their Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.Judicial Watch, which describes itself as a non-profit organization seeking to promote integrity, transparency and accountability in government, says that on September 25, 2009, it served a FOIA request on the Mayor's Office seeking access to public records regarding Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.Among the request was all correspondence between the Mayor's Office and President Obama, Michelle Obama and White House Staff regarding the bid.The Mayor's Office acknowledged receipt of the request on October 1, 2009, the complaint states, and granted itself an additional seven days.  When time ran out, Judicial Watch appealed to the Mayor as head of...
2016 Olympic hosts have a murder problem

What to do with the Olympic Village site...
2009-10-14 00:06:00
The speculation is building on what might happen to the site that was going to be deveoped into Olympic Village for the 2016 games now that Chicago has lost the bid. Having worked in commercial real estate journalism for the last three years, I've heard a number of proposals for the site and many of them are resurfacing now. While it's sad to see the possibility for more affordable housing go by the wayside, I'm intrigued by some of the other options, summed up in this Clout Street arcticle Here's what I think of some of these options: -Casino: This is an old debate: tax dollars vs. neighborhood atmosphere. I think the assertation that a casino would help McCormick Place...

Olympic Businesses Everywhere: Sports Illustrated Nails the USOC's "Comic O
2009-09-22 07:21:00
A reporter put me onto an excellent Sports Illustrated article written during the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul. Author Leigh Montville writes about being “On the Trail of the O-Word,” in which he concludes that ”[d]espite official efforts to curb unsanctioned use of the word ‘Olympic,’” it is “here, there and everywhere.” To illustrate his point, he riffs on “Olympic” names he comes across in everyday life: Olympic Burger and Burrito. Olympic Fish and Meat Market. Olympic Fruit and Vegetable. Olympic Bar B Que. Olympic Pawn Shop. Olympic Van Lines. His list goes on and on. “Is there any fair-sized town that does not have an Olympic Diner somewhere on its outskirts?” he asks. “One Olympic Diner leads into two Olympic Realty offices, which lead into three Olympic Laundromats. There seem to be no boundaries. These Olympics are everywhere. Around the country. Around the world. The Olympic Di...
Daley's Olympic insurance leaves city exposed to billions
2009-09-21 16:34:00
Mayor Richard M. Daley and Patrick Ryan assure Chicago taxpayers that a safety net of insurance would insulate them from the financial risks of hosting the 2016 Olympics. But the insurance policies Mr. Ryan says he'll secure would cover only about $1.1 billion of the $3.8-billion operating budget that the mayor's Olympic point man has drawn up for the games. In many key areas, no insurer stands between taxpayers and the risk of revenue shortfalls or cost overruns.Read more about the shortfalls as we peel back the promised insurance coverage. ...

Olympic messages irk some CTA riders

Chicago's Olympic weak spots give IOC pause: analysis
2009-09-02 20:50:00
When it comes to Chicago, the International Olympic Committee is worried about money, political commitment and transportation. The one ace in the hole for Chicago could be President Barack Obama. In an evaluation of the four finalists to host the 2016 Summer Games, the IOC praised Chicago's plan to site the Olympics on the lakefront. But the committee pointed to risks with the athletes' village, namely that there is no financing in place for the $1-billion development, the most expensive component in the city's $4.8-billion Olympic plan.Find out where we stand heading into next month's vote in Copenhagen, and what role Pres.
