Dog Writers? Oscars ? The 2011 DWAA Awards
2011-12-18 06:07:00 I've just received the happy news that my blog post, What You Can Do to Avoid Getting Bitten By a Dog ?10 Common Mistakes People Make Greeting Dogs is in the running for a prestigious DWAA (Dog Writers Association of America) Award. The last time I had the honor of being in the running was back in 2007, when my book Dogs of Dreamtime was a finalist in the general book category. It lost to a book about the Search and Rescue dogs that worked at the Twin Towers on 9/11 entitled Dog Heroes of September 11th by Nona Kilgore Bauer. For those of us who write about dogs, being selected as a finalist by the DWAA is our equivalant of being nominated for an Oscar. Same idea of being recognized by our peers in a big way. The competition in my category is pretty stiff again this year, so while I'll keep my fingers crossed, I won't be holding my breath. : ) Award night is in February. Wish me luck!

ALL MY CHILDREN! OSCARS! GLEE! UNDER THE DOME! The TV Addict Week in Rewind
2011-11-11 20:52:00 Most Welcome Media Blitz: The cover of Entertainment Weekly. MONDAY NIGHT RAW. Viral vids spoofing PRETTY LITTLE LIARS. Suddenly, Miss Piggy, Kermit and the rest of the Muppets are everywhere… and we couldn’t be happier. Funniest Show You’re Not Watching: Just how fantastic was Tuesday’s RAISING HOPE? Put it this way, it managed to make an otherwise disgusting subplot revolving digging through human faeces both funny and romantic.   Least Welcome Trend: Is it just us, or did November 10th seem a touch early to air the mid-season finales of GREY’S ANATOMY, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and THE SECRET CIRCLE. Smartest Move: After being slammed for stumbling during the latest GOP debate, Texas Governor Rick Perry was downright charming — if not particularly presidential — as he presented his Top 10 Excuses on THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN.  Dumbest Move: Following an ill-timed tweet, Ashton Kutcher — who helped put Twitter on the map — first announced he...

2011-11-11 00:57:00 Billy Crystal is Superman! The Oscars’ 84th Academy Awards were in turmoil, and had degenerated into a situation described by a word with that now-familar meme “gate” rehersalgate. I'm Ready for the Oscars Tonight
2011-02-27 23:00:00 I've never been a movie person. My husband was and still is shocked that I never saw The Godfather trilogy, Fletch or My Blue Heaven. My limited attention span doesn't make me a good movie watcher. As a side note I've noticed in order to succeed at yoga you must have a long attention span. That must be what attracts me to it. It is the ying of my yang.
OSCARS: My Can't-Miss 2011 Academy Awards Predictions!
2011-02-25 22:50:00 "I bloody well stammer....and win Oscars!"We've had weeks of waiting, speculating, and scheming. The 83rd Annual Academy Awards are almost here. After some thought and review of my way-too-early guesses, I've done some tweaking and have put together my rock-solid final predictions. Will Annette Bening upset Natalie Portman? Will Melissa Leo's "For Your Consideration" campaign spoil her chances against Hailee Steinfeld? Is "The King's Speech" still the one to beat? Will America be able to stomach another wild upset in the Live Action Short Film category?!My prediction in every category is in the photo gallery below. On tonight's WGN Evening News, I asked Chicagoans for their picks. The video is posted right after the gallery!PHOTO GALLERY: I predict the winners of...

Artropolis: Oscars for the Art World
2010-05-06 19:00:00 As a Leo I was very attracted to this piece of art by Christophe Roberts Last week Chicago became the mecca of the art world and I attended this grand event at the Merchandise Mart with my friend, Meryl. Overwhelmed with where to look first, faithful followers of the art world were gathered in full force. We overheard many words of praise while others complained that there was nothing new. I really believed there was something for everyone in this venue. Just trying to see and observe everything was quite a feat and yes, I did stop often to talk, schmooze, see and rest...it reminded me of trying to get through The Louvre in one day! Yes, it was...
The RedEye Geek gets beat @ the Oscars & demands a recount!
2010-03-14 16:35:00 Last week I put out a challenge to Geek To Me readers to try and beat me in picking Oscar winners. This past season was one of the most predictable Oscar seasons yet, and had I just followed Roger Ebert, I wouldn't have been beat like I was.I want a recount!Yeah, yeah, it was MY contest and I was beat fair and square. But getting beat by fellow comic-book writer Matt Kubinski was the ultimate defeat. See, the last time I was a guest on Matt's CinemaJaw movies podcast, I went head to head with him in a round of movie trivia and suffered a similar fate. And dammit if it wasn't on a question that I KNEW THE ANSWER TO!So...

Bitchin' about the Oscars

Ah, the beauty of live TV. Perhaps this is why broadcast will never die. Top Three Rude Moments from the 2010 Oscars:...

Forget the Oscars! The RAZZIES are upon us
2010-02-01 21:29:00 Did you see this movie? Neither did she. Via Aceshowbiz.comPerhaps the most underrated awards show of all time, The RAZZIE Awards exist to poke fun at those self-important celebrities barely literate enough to read from their cues at more popular Hollywood functions. Nominations were released today, and Sandra Bullock tops the ballot for Worst Actress of 2009 for her performance in "All About Steve," a film I'd never heard of until about an hour ago when the noms were released. Apparently, Bullock was all about showing her range in 2009: Bullock is also in the running to take home Oscar himself as a Best Actress nominee for her work in "The Blind Side."But enough about the Oscars. Flanking Bullock on...

First reviews of AVATAR! Is it heading for the Oscars?
2009-12-11 05:33:00 "Gone with the What?""Dances with Who?"James Cameron's mega-blockbuster "Avatar" had its big world premiere in London today, and early embargo-busting critics are posting their reviews all over the internet! The first reaction? AVATAR IS THE BEST FILM EVER MADE! EVER!!!!!Or at least the best film ever made featuring "unobtainium." The movie was screened here in Chicago and I was in attendance. Unfortunately I am under embargo, swearing a blood oath not to review the film or give any feedback until next week. So I thought I'd post a few blurbs from other critics posting their reviews today....- KTLA's Sam Rubin had his eyeballs, well, molested by Cameron's work. It's going straight to the Best Picture category at the Oscars, according...

Sean Penn, the Oscars and Gay Marriage
2009-02-23 18:45:00 As movies have the power to transcend human difference and remind us of our common humanity, I believe the Oscars should focus on those transcendent themes of film and the artistic achievements which help make them manifest on the silver screen.
